Do not start with the label “AI chip stock.” Start by identifying what the company actually does, then test its AI demand against audited revenue, margins, cash flow, customers, capacity, competition, regulation and valuation. A fabless designer, a contract foundry and a semiconductor-equipment maker can all benefit from AI spending while carrying very different risks.
This is a filing-based due-diligence framework, not a personalized buy or sell recommendation. Company disclosures cited below are dated 2025 or 2026, and export rules, results and share prices can change quickly.
1. Identify the company’s place in the semiconductor chain
Your first task is to map the business model. AI revenue is not economically identical across the supply chain, so comparing companies without this context can produce misleading conclusions.

A fabless designer creates processors, accelerators, networking silicon or other chips but relies on outside manufacturers for wafer production. Its economics can include high gross margins and relatively lower factory capital spending, but it remains dependent on foundry capacity, advanced packaging, memory, substrates and equipment. Product roadmaps, software support and access to leading process nodes often determine whether demand converts into durable revenue.

Integrated manufacturers
An integrated manufacturer designs and produces some or all of its own silicon. It carries heavier capital commitments, depreciation and utilization risk than a purely fabless company. Intel’s FY2025 filing illustrates why investors must read the actual terms of government agreements and related share issuance rather than relying on headlines: grants, escrowed shares and a conditional warrant can affect both funding and ownership.
Contract foundries
A foundry manufactures chips designed by other companies. Its results depend on utilization, process technology, customer mix and the timing of customers’ capacity commitments. TSMC’s 2025 Annual Report states that a significant portion of operating costs is fixed; when demand or capacity utilization falls, margins can decline sharply because those costs do not fall in proportion to revenue.
Semiconductor-equipment suppliers
Equipment companies sell the tools used to make and inspect wafers. Their AI exposure is indirect: customers expand or upgrade factories, and equipment orders follow. KLA’s FY2026 Form 10-K identifies component and material availability as a risk. A strong AI build-out can therefore raise equipment demand, but orders can be delayed even when chip demand remains healthy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Build a dependency map
For each company, write down dependencies on third-party manufacturing, advanced packaging, high-bandwidth memory, networking, substrates, power and a small group of customers. Then mark which dependencies are contractual, which are constrained, and which could be replaced. The map helps distinguish a company that owns a scarce capability from one that is exposed to someone else’s bottleneck.
| Supply-chain role | Primary economic driver | Risks to examine first |
|---|---|---|
| Fabless designer | Product adoption, pricing and software-enabled demand | Foundry, packaging and memory access; product transitions; customer concentration |
| Integrated manufacturer | Product sales plus factory utilization | Large fixed costs, execution, capital needs and ownership effects from financing |
| Foundry | Wafer volume, process leadership and utilization | Underutilized capacity, customer concentration and long-lived capital commitments |
| Equipment supplier | Customer factory investment and tool intensity | Order timing, component availability and cyclical capital spending |
2. Read the filings in a repeatable order
Use the latest annual report and quarterly report together. The annual filing gives the business model and long-term risks; the quarterly filing shows whether the latest trend is confirming or weakening that story.
- Start with Management’s Discussion and Analysis. Record revenue by segment, year-over-year growth, gross margin, operating income and operating cash flow. Note management’s explanation for each material change.
- Read segment and geographic disclosures. Determine whether AI-related sales are reported separately or embedded in a broader data-center, networking or computing category. Do not treat a broad segment as pure AI revenue.
- Read the risk factors. Look for explicit references to delayed orders, customer spending reductions, capacity limits, export controls, competition, inventory and component shortages.
- Inspect the financial statements and notes. Compare accounts receivable, inventory, purchase commitments, capital expenditures, debt, stock-based compensation and cash from operations with the prior period.
- Separate facts from expectations. Label each statement as reported revenue, booked order, management guidance, customer plan or analyst forecast. Only the first category is realized performance.
- Check subsequent events and the next earnings release. A filing is a dated snapshot. New licensing rules, product launches, capacity changes or customer announcements may alter the risk assessment.
Create a one-page worksheet with the period covered, the source filing date and the exact metric definition. This prevents a quarterly figure, a one-time allowance or a promotional statement from being presented as a recurring annual result.
3. Test whether the AI demand story appears in reported results
AI narratives become investable only when they show up in financial statements and observable customer behavior. A company can describe a large opportunity while revenue, margins or cash generation remain vulnerable.

Compare reported growth with the company’s guidance and with the prior-year base. Ask whether growth comes from unit volume, price increases, a new product, an acquisition or a temporary shipment surge. If management discusses AI demand but does not disclose a separate AI line, use the broader segment results and state that the AI portion is not isolated.

Margins and operating leverage
Track gross margin and operating margin over several periods. Rising revenue with falling gross margin may indicate an unfavorable mix, expedited freight, start-up costs, pricing pressure or higher component costs. For a foundry or integrated manufacturer, utilization can be decisive because fixed factory expenses are spread over fewer wafers when demand weakens.
Cash conversion
Compare operating cash flow with net income and capital expenditure. Strong accounting earnings accompanied by weak cash generation deserve an explanation. Possible causes include receivables that have not been collected, inventory purchased ahead of demand, customer financing or unusually high capital spending.
Working-capital signals
- Receivables: growth materially faster than revenue can indicate longer payment terms, customer concentration or shipments near period end.
- Inventory: a build can support a product launch, but it can also precede a demand slowdown or a rapid product transition.
- Purchase commitments: binding wafer, packaging, equipment or component commitments can create cash obligations if customers delay orders.
- Capacity additions: new facilities and tools may support future AI demand but increase depreciation and execution risk before revenue arrives.
Broadcom’s FY2025 Form 10-K describes the semiconductor industry as highly cyclical and warns that lower AI customer spending or delayed orders could materially hurt results. Treat that disclosure as a scenario to model, not as proof that a downturn is imminent.
4. Measure customer concentration and bargaining power
Concentration can make excellent reported growth fragile. Read both direct-customer disclosures and language about distributors, contract manufacturers and end customers. A company may not name the ultimate buyer even when sales are economically dependent on it.
Use the disclosed percentages precisely
Broadcom reported that sales through all channels to its top five end customers were approximately 40% of fiscal 2025 net revenue. That is a Broadcom-specific disclosure, not a statistic for the semiconductor sector. Record the fiscal year, the “all channels” definition and whether the percentage refers to end customers or direct accounts.
Assess switching power
For each major customer, ask whether it can switch suppliers, dual-source, design an internal alternative or delay a deployment. A sole-source product with software integration may have stronger pricing power than a component that can be substituted quickly. Also examine whether a large buyer can demand rebates, longer payment terms or custom financing.
Look beyond the top-customer table
- Read distributor concentration and rights of return.
- Check payment terms and customer deposits.
- Look for customers requesting leasing or alternative financing.
- Identify exposure to one cloud provider, device maker, systems integrator or government program.
- Compare concentration with the company’s ability to replace lost volume.
Broadcom also discusses customers asking for alternative financing or leasing arrangements. Such arrangements can change the timing of cash collection and increase credit exposure even when the shipment is recorded as revenue.
5. Evaluate capacity, suppliers and fixed costs
AI chips require more than a design win. The company must secure wafers, advanced packaging, memory, substrates, testing, networking components and reliable power for the customer’s data center.

Foundry and packaging access
For a fabless company, identify the manufacturing partners and process nodes used for leading products. Check whether capacity is reserved, whether commitments are take-or-pay, and whether advanced packaging is a bottleneck. A design that cannot be packaged or supplied at the required volume cannot convert its addressable market into sales.
Utilization and capital intensity
TSMC’s 2025 Annual Report emphasizes substantial fixed operating costs and the risk that lower utilization will significantly reduce margins. Apply that logic to any manufacturer: estimate how much revenue would need to fall before fixed costs materially compress operating profit. Do not assume that a new factory reaches efficient utilization immediately.
Supplier and component availability
Equipment makers can be constrained by optics, components, materials or specialized subassemblies. KLA’s FY2026 filing identifies component and material availability among its risks. For every supplier dependency, determine the lead time, number of qualified alternatives and effect of a shortage on shipments.

Power and data-center buildout
AI deployments require data-center construction, electricity, cooling and networking. If customer projects are delayed by power or infrastructure limits, chip orders can move out even when long-term demand remains intact. Treat customer capacity announcements as plans until they are reflected in orders and revenue.
6. Check competition and product execution
AI markets can grow while individual products lose share. Compare the company’s roadmap with alternatives on performance, energy efficiency, memory bandwidth, networking, software compatibility and total system cost.
Roadmap credibility
Look for a history of shipping products on the promised schedule and for evidence that customers are deploying them at scale. Rapid transitions can leave older inventory, require costly redesigns or cause customers to delay purchases while waiting for the next generation.
Software and ecosystem dependence
For accelerators, software tools, libraries, developer support and compatibility can be as important as raw chip specifications. Determine whether customers can move workloads to another architecture without rewriting applications. A strong ecosystem may improve retention, but it also creates execution obligations and raises expectations for backward compatibility.
Customer-built alternatives
Cloud providers and large systems companies may design internal chips or use multiple suppliers. Read filings for references to internal development, alternative architectures and pricing pressure. Intel’s FY2025 filing warns that expected demand for AI-capable products may not materialize and that product competition and timing matter.

Inventory through a transition
When a new generation launches, ask who owns the old inventory and whether the company has reserves for potential obsolescence. A sudden product transition can reduce orders for an older chip before the replacement reaches volume production.
7. Examine export controls, geography and legal exposure
Map where products are designed, manufactured, sold and installed. Then identify export restrictions, license requirements, tariffs and government incentives that could alter which customers the company may serve.
Read dated disclosures as snapshots
NVIDIA’s FY2026 Form 10-K described uncertainty after the U.S. government announced in May 2025 that it would rescind the AI Diffusion Interim Final Rule and prepare a replacement. The filing said the replacement’s scope, timing and requirements remained uncertain. It also said a February 2026 license permitted limited H200 shipments to specified China-based customers, while NVIDIA had generated no revenue under that program as of the filing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThose statements describe the company’s position at the filing date, not the current legal status. Before making an investment decision, verify the latest official rules and the company’s newest filing.
Model several policy outcomes
- Base case: current products remain saleable in the company’s principal markets.
- Restriction case: a license is delayed, denied or narrowed, reducing addressable customers.
- Adaptation case: the company redesigns products for compliant markets, incurring engineering and inventory costs.
- Retaliation or localization case: customers accelerate domestic alternatives or restrict access to components.
AMD’s FY2025 filing and KLA’s FY2026 filing also discuss export and geographic risks. Compare the specific products and destinations affected rather than applying a single sector-wide assumption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Assess financial resilience and capital structure
AI opportunities often require spending before revenue arrives. Review the balance sheet as carefully as the income statement.
Liquidity and debt
Record cash, short-term investments, debt maturities, interest expense and committed capital expenditures. A company with large fixed manufacturing commitments needs more liquidity through a downturn than a fabless company with flexible outsourcing.

Capital expenditure and financing needs
For foundries and integrated manufacturers, examine multi-year factory and equipment plans, expected funding sources and the consequences of a delayed ramp. For equipment suppliers and designers, determine whether growth requires inventory financing, acquisitions or new facilities.

Dilution and government agreements
Review basic and diluted share counts, stock-based compensation, employee equity plans and warrants. Intel’s FY2025 report describes a U.S. government agreement involving grant disbursements, issued shares, escrowed shares and a conditional warrant. Read the filing’s terms and subsequent disclosures to understand vesting, conditions, dilution and ownership effects.
Cash-flow stress test
Run a downside case in which revenue growth slows, receivables take longer to collect, inventory turns deteriorate and capital spending remains committed. The question is not whether the company can report an attractive long-term opportunity; it is whether it can finance the path to that opportunity without issuing stock on unfavorable terms or taking on excessive debt.
9. Value the shares using current data and explicit assumptions
A strong business can still be a poor purchase if the price assumes flawless execution. The cited filings do not establish a current valuation or a correct multiple, so calculate valuation from current market data at the time of publication or purchase.
Choose a measure that fits the business
- Earnings multiple: useful when profits are mature and representative, but misleading when margins are temporarily elevated or depressed.
- Sales multiple: useful for comparing high-growth businesses with different depreciation policies, but it ignores the cost of converting sales into profit.
- Free-cash-flow yield: highlights cash generation after capital expenditure, but can be distorted by unusually low or high investment in a single year.
- Enterprise-value measures: help compare companies with different debt and cash balances, provided you use consistent forecasts.
Make the assumptions visible
State the revenue growth period, terminal growth or exit multiple, gross-margin path, operating expenses, tax rate, capital expenditure and share count used in your model. Then ask what performance the current price already discounts. A valuation that works only if growth, margins and utilization all reach optimistic levels has little room for error.
Do not confuse market growth with shareholder return
AI spending can expand while a company’s returns disappoint because competitors capture the growth, customers negotiate lower prices, capacity becomes excessive or the stock price already reflects the opportunity. Valuation is a separate decision from business quality.
10. Compare companies on like-for-like axes
When evaluating more than one issuer, use a scorecard that respects each company’s role. A fabless designer and a foundry should not receive identical operating-risk questions.
| Comparison axis | Questions for a fabless designer | Questions for a foundry or equipment supplier |
|---|---|---|
| AI revenue evidence | Is AI revenue separately disclosed, and is growth supported by shipments and customer deployments? | Are AI-related orders visible in wafer demand, tool bookings, utilization or customer capital plans? |
| Capital intensity | How much cash is tied up in inventory, packaging commitments and development? | How much fixed-cost capacity or specialized equipment must be funded before demand arrives? |
| Supply dependencies | Can the company secure leading-edge wafers, packaging, memory and substrates? | Are components, materials and process tools available from qualified suppliers? |
| Customer power | Can major buyers switch architectures, negotiate price or build internally? | Can customers delay factory expansion or qualify competing suppliers? |
| Product execution | Are roadmap timing, software support, efficiency and system integration competitive? | Are process yields, tool performance, service and delivery schedules improving? |
| Geographic exposure | Which products and customers require export licenses? | Where are factories, tools, components and end users located? |
| Financial resilience | Can cash flow withstand an order pause or inventory write-down? | Can the balance sheet support long-lived capacity through lower utilization? |
| Valuation | What growth and margin assumptions are embedded in the share price? | What utilization, pricing and capital-spending assumptions are embedded? |
11. Use a final pre-purchase checklist
Before committing capital, write a short investment memo that answers each question in plain language:
- What supply-chain role does the company occupy?
- Which reported segment contains the AI exposure, and what portion is actually disclosed?
- What evidence shows that demand is realized rather than forecast?
- How have revenue, gross margin, operating cash flow, receivables and inventory changed?
- How concentrated are customers and distributors, including end-customer exposure?
- What manufacturing, packaging, memory, component and power constraints could limit shipments?
- Which competitors, internal customer designs or product transitions threaten share?
- Which export rules, licenses, tariffs or government agreements could change the opportunity?
- Can cash, debt and committed capital spending withstand a cyclical downturn?
- What valuation method are you using, and what assumptions does the current price require?
- What specific evidence would invalidate your thesis, and how will you monitor it in the next filing?
If you cannot answer one of these questions from a filing or a clearly identified current source, mark the uncertainty instead of filling it with a market narrative. Revisit the analysis after each quarterly report, major product transition, capacity announcement or regulatory change.
