An 8-bay NAS is worthwhile when you need high capacity, a choice of fault-tolerant arrays, and room to add storage over time. It is not automatically the best value: eight empty bays, eight compatible disks, faster networking, and possible expansion hardware can make the complete system far more expensive than the enclosure. Plan usable capacity, redundancy, drive compatibility, network equipment, workload requirements, warranty, and the full installed cost before choosing a model.

The specifications below are manufacturer claims for the named models, not independent performance or reliability tests. Confirm current firmware support, drive lists, stock, regional pricing, and warranty terms for your market before ordering.

Decide whether eight bays fit your workload

Choose eight bays for capacity and growth

Eight bays give you more ways to balance capacity and protection than a two- or four-bay unit. You can use larger disks, reserve more space for redundancy, replace disks one at a time, and still have room for future expansion if the chassis and operating system support it. This is useful for a growing photo or video library, several years of computer backups, shared project files, or multiple services that would quickly fill a smaller enclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bay count is only the starting point. A NAS with eight empty slots has no usable storage until you buy disks, and the usable result depends on the array layout, filesystem overhead, snapshots, and any capacity reserved for future growth. Compare the complete configured system rather than the enclosure alone.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A smaller NAS may be the better decision

If you only need a modest backup target, have one or two users, or do not expect your data set to grow, a smaller NAS may cost less and be simpler to maintain. Eight bays also mean more disks to monitor, more potential replacement purchases, and usually higher power and noise. Buy the extra bays for a defined capacity or expansion plan, not because the number sounds future-proof.

Calculate usable capacity before buying disks

Raw capacity is not usable capacity

Manufacturers advertise the sum of the drive capacities. Eight 20 TB disks therefore provide 160 TB of raw decimal capacity. Redundancy consumes part of that total, and the operating system, filesystem metadata, snapshots, and reserved free space reduce the amount available for files. A capacity figure shown by a vendor calculator is an estimate under its selected assumptions, not a universal promise.

Use the capacity calculator for the exact NAS family, disk sizes, and array type you are considering. Synology’s calculator and RAID guidance are designed to model those choices; select the actual drive capacity and redundancy mode rather than relying on a headline maximum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How common layouts change capacity

Layout Approximate usable capacity with eight equal drives Drive failures tolerated Important trade-off
RAID 0 Eight drives’ capacity before overhead None Maximum space, but one failed drive can make the array unavailable and does not provide protection.
RAID 5 Seven drives’ capacity before overhead One More space than RAID 6, with less fault tolerance during replacement.
RAID 6 Six drives’ capacity before overhead Two Two parity blocks protect against two failed drives, at the cost of two drives’ capacity.
RAID 10 About four drives’ capacity before overhead Depends on which mirrored members fail Mirroring can provide useful performance and recovery characteristics, but sacrifices half the raw capacity.
RAID 1 One mirror’s capacity per mirrored pair Usually one drive in each mirror Exact multi-drive implementation varies; verify how the NAS creates mirrors.

These are planning formulas for equal-size disks, not a guarantee of the number displayed by a particular operating system. Flexible vendor layouts can use different rules, and mixed-size disks may be limited by the smallest member in a conventional array.

Worked planning example

Suppose you install eight 20 TB disks and choose RAID 6. The raw total is 160 TB; the simple RAID 6 calculation leaves roughly 120 TB before filesystem and system reservations. Decimal terabytes are displayed as a smaller number of tebibytes by many operating systems, so the visible figure will be lower still. If you need 90 TB of files today, retaining roughly 25 percent of the usable pool for growth, snapshots, and replacement work would leave about 30 TB of planning headroom in this example. Recalculate with the exact disk sizes and the NAS calculator before purchasing.

Do not fill a new array to its last few percent. Keep a growth reserve, account for snapshot retention, and decide whether an expansion shelf or larger replacement disks will be your next step. If your data estimate is uncertain, model a conservative case and a high-growth case; the difference may justify eight bays or show that a smaller enclosure is sufficient.

Pick redundancy separately from backup

What RAID protects against

RAID distributes data and parity or mirrors across disks so the volume can remain available after specified disk failures. Synology describes RAID 6 as storing two parity data blocks and tolerating two failed drives. That protection is valuable in a large eight-disk array, where replacing a failed disk can take time, but it reduces usable capacity by the equivalent of two disks.

Choose the layout according to the loss you can tolerate, the capacity you need, and how you will recover a failed disk. A layout that tolerates one failure may be adequate for a smaller, well-backed-up workload; a two-failure layout gives more margin but costs capacity. RAID 10 can suit workloads where mirrored pairs and predictable recovery are more important than maximum space. Confirm which layouts the exact operating system supports and whether migration between layouts is possible.

Why RAID is not a backup

RAID does not provide a separate historical copy. Accidental deletion, ransomware, an application writing bad data, theft, fire, water damage, or a damaged NAS can affect every disk in the array. Keep at least one independent copy, preferably with copies on different media and one copy off-site or otherwise isolated. Test that backup by restoring representative files; a job that reports success is not proof that recovery will work.

Plan backup capacity as carefully as primary capacity. If the NAS will hold the only copy of a large media collection, the cost of a second NAS, removable disks, or cloud storage may exceed the cost difference between RAID options.

Check drive compatibility for the exact model

Use the current compatibility list

Before buying disks, open the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact NAS model and check the supported software version. Synology’s drive policy is tied to specified DSM versions and listed drives. QNAP maintains its own compatibility list. Those policies cannot be generalized to every NAS or every firmware release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the list entry for the precise capacity, interface, and model number. A disk that works in one NAS can be unsupported in another, and a previously listed disk can have different status after a firmware change. Save a copy of the list or record the date you checked it so you can verify replacement drives later.

Verify the details that affect an array

  • Confirm that all eight bays accept the drive form factor and interface you intend to use; the QNAP TS-873A, for example, specifies eight 3.5-inch SATA bays.
  • Check the maximum supported disk size and whether the limit applies per bay, per volume, or to a particular software release.
  • Look for required firmware, sector format, and any model-specific restrictions before mixing existing and new disks.
  • Decide whether you will use identical disks or a documented mixed-size configuration. Matching models simplify replacement and capacity planning.
  • Buy at least one compatible spare, or confirm that an equivalent replacement is available in your region.

Do not assume that a disk marketed for NAS use is automatically approved. Compatibility status, warranty implications, and alert behavior are model-specific.

Match networking to the entire path

Port speed is only one link in the chain

A NAS cannot deliver a 10GbE transfer rate to a client connected through a 1GbE switch. Check the NAS port, the switch, the client network adapter, the cabling or transceiver, and the file protocol together. Storage media, encryption, many small files, and simultaneous users can also limit throughput before the network link is full.

As a theoretical reference, 2.5 gigabits per second is about 312.5 megabytes per second before protocol and hardware overhead; 10 gigabits per second is about 1.25 gigabytes per second. These calculations are not benchmark results. A single client may not reach them, and multiple clients may share the NAS ports and disk array.

Compare the interfaces offered by the example models

Model Built-in network interfaces Upgrade path noted by the manufacturer What to verify
Synology DS1825+ Two 2.5GbE ports Optional faster networking and expansion options Which optional adapter is supported, whether your switch and clients can use it, and the cost of the upgrade.
QNAP TS-873A Two 2.5GbE ports PCIe expansion Compatible network cards, available PCIe slot bandwidth, and whether installing a card affects other expansion plans.
UGREEN NASync DXP8800 Plus Two 10GbE ports Two M.2 slots; confirm other expansion details for the current revision Whether your switch, cabling, and clients support 10GbE and whether the disk array can sustain the intended workload.
TerraMaster U8-450 Two 10Gb SFP+ ports and two 2.5GbE ports Dual M.2 NVMe slots and expandable memory SFP+ optics or direct-attach cable requirements, switch compatibility, and the cost of the 10GbE infrastructure.

When 2.5GbE is enough

Dual 2.5GbE can be sensible when your clients already have 2.5GbE adapters, your switch supports that speed, and your work consists mainly of backups, document sharing, and a few simultaneous users. It avoids the cost and cabling complexity of 10GbE while being faster than 1GbE.

When 10GbE or SFP+ is justified

Consider 10GbE when several workstations move large files, you edit media directly from the NAS, or you have a high-speed server that would otherwise be constrained by the link. SFP+ may require a compatible transceiver or direct-attach cable, while copper 10GbE requires suitable twisted-pair cabling. Price the switch, adapters, cables, and transceivers as part of the NAS purchase.

Match CPU, memory, and expansion to the workload

Separate file storage from heavier services

Basic file serving and scheduled backups place different demands on a NAS than several concurrent applications, encryption, indexing, virtual machines, or media processing. List the services you will run at the same time and check the model’s CPU architecture, installed memory, maximum memory, and supported applications. Do not infer real-world performance from a processor name alone.

The QNAP TS-873A specifies an AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B processor. The UGREEN NASync DXP8800 Plus listing specifies 8 GB of DDR5 memory. TerraMaster describes expandable memory for the U8-450. The DS1825+ page emphasizes file services and backup features. Verify the current memory configuration and upgrade limits before assuming that a model can handle your planned concurrent workloads.

Understand what M.2 and PCIe slots do

M.2 NVMe slots may be used for cache or other functions defined by the operating system; they do not automatically increase the capacity of the main SATA array. Cache also cannot compensate for an undersized CPU, insufficient memory, or a network bottleneck. Ask what workloads benefit, how cache protection works during a power loss, and whether using the slots prevents another feature.

PCIe expansion can add a faster network adapter or another supported function. Check the slot generation, lane allocation, physical clearance, and the vendor’s supported-card list. A card that fits physically is not necessarily recognized by the NAS software.

Plan expansion shelves realistically

Some eight-bay systems support an external expansion unit. Confirm the exact expansion model, maximum number of attached units, supported volume or pool configurations, and whether the expansion requires a specific interface or firmware. Include the shelf, additional disks, cables, power, and any separate warranty in your budget. Do not count an unverified future shelf as guaranteed capacity.

Evaluate the operating system and data-protection tools

A NAS is an operating system and application platform as well as a disk enclosure. Check whether the software provides the file-sharing protocols, user permissions, snapshots, replication, backup targets, notifications, and monitoring you actually need. Confirm support for your client operating systems and identity provider if the NAS will serve a business or household with multiple users.

Look at update policy, security advisories, rollback or recovery procedures, and how alerts are delivered. A feature listed on a product page may require a particular firmware release, memory amount, expansion card, or subscription. Verify those prerequisites before selecting the enclosure.

Compare warranty terms, not only years

The DS1825+ US listing specifies a three-year limited hardware warranty. The QNAP TS-873A specifications state a three-year standard warranty. The TerraMaster U8-450 page specifies a two-year replacement warranty. These labels are not equivalent: read what parts and labor are covered, whether shipping is included, how replacement timing works, and which region’s terms apply. The UGREEN listing requires the current regional warranty to be confirmed before purchase.

Use this buying procedure

  1. Define the data set. Record current file usage, annual growth, snapshot retention, backup copies, and the largest individual files. Separate primary data from backup capacity.
  2. Set a usable-capacity target. Use the target, not raw terabytes, when comparing eight-drive layouts. Leave a growth reserve and account for system and snapshot overhead.
  3. Select the failure tolerance. Decide whether one or two simultaneous disk failures can be tolerated and how quickly you can obtain a replacement. Compare RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, or the vendor’s documented alternative.
  4. Check the compatibility list. For the exact model and software version, verify every proposed disk and record an approved replacement.
  5. Map the network. Draw the path from each important client through the switch to the NAS. Confirm port speeds, cabling, adapters, SFP+ requirements, and whether your disks can feed the link.
  6. List concurrent services. Include file sharing, backup jobs, indexing, snapshots, applications, virtualization, and encryption. Match that list to CPU, memory, and software requirements.
  7. Price upgrades and expansion. Add M.2 devices, memory, PCIe cards, an expansion shelf, and all required cables before comparing totals.
  8. Read regional warranty terms. Save the policy for your country and confirm how a failed disk or chassis is handled.
  9. Design independent backup. Choose the second copy and test a restore plan before trusting the NAS with irreplaceable data.
  10. Confirm the final configuration. Recheck stock, firmware support, drive-list status, and the exact model number immediately before ordering.

Avoid common purchasing mistakes

Buying by raw terabytes

Eight large disks can still leave less usable space than expected after parity and reservations. Re-run the calculation with the selected redundancy mode and keep the result in decimal and tebibyte terms so the operating-system display does not surprise you.

Assuming every NAS disk is interchangeable

Drive policies differ by vendor, model, and software version. An unsupported disk can create warnings, limit support, or prevent a planned array operation. Verify the exact list before payment.

Paying for 10GbE without a 10GbE path

Two 10GbE ports do not make a 10GbE network. Budget for the switch, client adapters, cabling or SFP+ hardware, and the storage performance needed to use the link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating cache as extra storage

M.2 slots are an acceleration or software feature, not a substitute for enough SATA capacity. Confirm the supported cache mode and its recovery behavior before buying NVMe devices.

Counting an expansion shelf that is not documented

Expansion support is model-specific. Verify the shelf, connection method, firmware, maximum number of units, and volume rules instead of assuming any external disk enclosure will work.

Using RAID as the only copy

RAID can keep a volume online after a disk failure, but it cannot undo deletion, corruption, theft, or physical damage. Keep and test an independent backup.

Ignoring power protection

A UPS can give the NAS time to shut down cleanly, but safe-shutdown support and sizing must be checked for the exact NAS and UPS combination. Do not assume that any UPS will communicate correctly with the NAS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision test

Choose an 8-bay NAS when your capacity calculation, redundancy choice, compatible-drive plan, network map, workload requirements, backup design, and total-cost worksheet all point to eight bays. If one of those items is unresolved, pause the purchase and verify the model-specific documentation. The right enclosure is the one whose complete, supported configuration meets your usable-capacity and recovery goals within your regional budget—not simply the one with the largest raw number or fastest port on its product page.
