Before paying, verify two separate things: what exact release you are buying and what condition that release is in. For a loose figure, check completeness, paint, joints, discoloration, battery damage, repairs and modifications. For a boxed or carded figure, inspect the package as carefully as the figure: corners, edges, surfaces, window or blister and seal. Request clear photographs of the actual item, ask specific questions in writing, check the seller’s history and understand your return and buyer-protection options.
A “sealed” label describes a package state. It does not, by itself, prove authenticity, undamaged contents or completeness.
1. Identify the exact figure and release first
Condition only has meaning when you are comparing the correct item. The same character can appear in an original release, a reissue, a convention variant, a regional edition or a later package design. Accessories, colors, markings and packaging can differ between them.
Record the identifying details
- Manufacturer or maker shown on the figure or package.
- Product line, series or edition.
- Character or subject name.
- Release date or approximate production period, if stated.
- Product number, model number, barcode or other identifier printed on the item.
- Any variant designation, such as an exclusive colorway or alternate costume.
Compare the listing with official manufacturer information, a specialist collector reference or well-documented photographs of that precise release. Do not rely on a franchise or character name alone. A listing can use the right character name while showing a different edition with different contents.

Check whether the listing uses stock photographs
Stock images can establish what a new release was intended to contain, but they do not show the condition of the seller’s item. Ask whether every photograph depicts the actual figure and package. For a used item, request a current photograph with a handwritten date or another identifying detail if the listing’s images are ambiguous. Treat unanswered identity questions as unresolved rather than assuming the most desirable version.
Do not treat a reference image as an authentication certificate
Matching general appearance is useful, but there is no universal set of counterfeit markers established for every action figure. A correct-looking package can still contain a swapped, repaired or incomplete item. Use identity checks to avoid buying the wrong release, then evaluate authenticity and condition using the seller’s evidence, provenance and the platform’s protections.
2. Inspect a loose used figure
A loose figure needs two separate evaluations: whether all original components are present and whether the figure functions and displays as expected. Ask the seller to photograph the figure from every side and to show every component included in the sale.

Use a reference for the exact release and make a checklist of the original contents. Depending on the figure, that may include weapons, alternate hands or heads, helmets, capes, backpacks, stands, cards, comics, instructions or small inserts. Small parts are easily lost, and a seller may describe a figure as “complete” while overlooking an insert or accessory.
Ask directly:
- Are all accessories shown in the reference included?
- Are any parts replacements, reproductions or pieces from another release?
- Are the original stand, tray, instructions, card or comic included?
- Will every item shown in the photographs be shipped?
If the seller cannot identify a part’s origin, record it as unknown. Do not count an accessory as original merely because it fits.
Examine paint and surfaces
Request close-ups of the face, hands, high-contact edges, raised details and any area where colors meet. Look for rub marks, chips, scratches, scuffs, paint transfer, overspray, staining, residue and gloss changes. Ask whether cleaning, touch-up paint or other restoration has been performed. A bright listing photograph can hide fine wear, so ask for images in even light without heavy filters.
Test joints without forcing them
Ask the seller to describe whether each joint is loose, firm, stuck or cracked. If the seller is willing, request a short video showing normal movement. A photograph cannot establish joint feel or range of motion. Older plastic can become brittle, and forcing a stiff joint may cause a break. If you are inspecting in person, move a joint only through gentle, normal resistance; stop when it binds or flexes unusually.

Check discoloration and material changes
Inspect white and light-colored plastic for yellowing, uneven fading or gray residue. Look for tackiness, warping, cracks and a strong odor that could indicate storage or material problems. Ask how the figure was stored: sunlight, heat, humidity, smoke and long-term contact with soft plastic can affect appearance and surfaces.

Inspect battery compartments when applicable
If the figure has lights, sounds or other battery-powered features, request a photograph of the battery compartment and contacts. Look for corrosion, leakage, missing covers and damaged springs. Ask whether the feature has been tested and what batteries were used. A claim that the figure is “untested” means the function is unknown, not that it works.
Look for repairs and modifications
Check seams, pegs, necks, wrists, ankles and other stress points for glue, replacement screws, mismatched plastic, drilled holes or altered paint. Ask whether parts were reattached, joints tightened, accessories trimmed or the figure customized. Modifications may be desirable to one collector and unacceptable to another; the important issue is that they are disclosed.
3. Evaluate a sealed, carded or boxed figure
For a sealed item, the package is part of what you are buying. A figure can be untouched while its card or box is crushed, faded or opened and resealed. Inspect the package separately from the visible contents.
Request photographs that reveal the whole package
Ask for clear, current photographs of:
- The full front and back.
- Both sides, top and bottom.
- All four corners and major edges.
- The window or blister from multiple angles.
- Seams, tape, glue lines, tabs and other seal areas.
- Any barcode, product number, copyright marking or manufacturer information.
- Close-ups of every disclosed flaw.
A clean front photograph does not show damage on the reverse, along an edge or under a flap. Reflections can also hide window scratches and lifted blister edges, so ask for an angled detail image when necessary.
Grade the card or box
Look for corner bends, creases, crushing, tears, dents, scuffs, fading, stains, writing, price stickers, residue and edge wear. Check whether the card is wavy or the box has lost its shape. Compare colors and printing across the package; uneven fading may indicate sun exposure or moisture.
Inspect the window or blister
Check for cracks, clouding, scratches, dents, yellowing, lifting, separation from the card, glue residue and distortion. A blister that is still attached can nevertheless have been partially opened. Note whether the plastic is pulled away at a corner or whether the contents appear to have shifted.
Examine the seal without assuming what “sealed” means
Ask the seller to define the term. “Factory sealed” could mean an intact original seal, while “sealed” might only mean the seller closed a flap or applied replacement tape. Look for inconsistent tape, excess glue, cut tabs, disturbed staples, mismatched plastic or marks suggesting the package was opened and closed again.

Separate collectible condition from play condition
A sealed package with a crushed corner may be acceptable for someone who wants an unopened figure to display loose, but not for someone collecting high-grade packaging. Decide whether your priority is untouched contents, package appearance, an unbroken seal or simply a complete figure before comparing prices.
4. Compare two listings on evidence, not adjectives
Words such as “mint,” “near mint,” “rare” and “sealed” are not a universal grading system. Compare concrete facts using the same criteria for every listing.

| Seller reliability | Does the account have relevant history and consistent descriptions? | Specific feedback, sensible answers and no pressure to move off-platform. |
| Transaction protection | What returns, dispute process and shipping protection apply? | Written terms reviewed before payment and payment through a protected method. |
| Intended use | Is it for boxed display, loose collecting or child play? | A condition standard chosen for that purpose rather than a generic label. |
There is no single condition score that covers every figure, packaging type and marketplace. A listing with fewer defects but weak evidence may be a riskier purchase than one with visible wear that is fully documented.

Review seller history
Check feedback for completed sales of similar collectibles, not just the account’s overall rating. Look for repeated complaints about inaccurate descriptions, stock photographs, missing parts, poor packing or refusal to resolve problems. A new account is not automatically dishonest, but it gives you less evidence to evaluate.
Keep questions and answers on the platform
Ask specific questions in writing and save the responses. Useful questions include:
- What is the exact release or product number?
- Is every part shown included?
- Are any parts replacements, reproductions, repairs or customizations?
- Has the figure’s function been tested?
- Has the package ever been opened, resealed or repaired?
- Are the photographs of the actual item?
- What defects are not visible in the current photographs?
- How will the item be protected during shipping?
Vague answers such as “looks complete” or “I know nothing about it” should be treated as uncertainty. Do not let a seller’s confidence substitute for evidence.
Read the return and buyer-protection terms before paying
Confirm the allowed reason for a return, the time limit, who pays return shipping, whether opened packaging can be returned and what evidence is required for a dispute. Check whether damage in transit is covered and whether the seller or buyer must report it within a specified period. Platform verification rules are not universal grading rules: requirements for packaging and contents vary by marketplace and category. A published collectibles policy for one marketplace cannot be applied automatically to another.

Use safe payment and shipping practices
Pay through the platform or another method that clearly provides the stated buyer protection. Avoid pressure to pay outside the platform, use an unprotected transfer or close the transaction before you can inspect the item. For a valuable package, ask about tracking, insurance and protective packing. Photograph the shipping carton, labels and contents when it arrives; retain the packaging until you are satisfied with the purchase.

Inspect in person when practical
UK second-hand consumer guidance recommends physically checking a second-hand item where possible, especially a toy, and buying from a trusted source. In-person inspection cannot prove every claim, but it can reveal odor, loose parts, joint problems, damage hidden by photographs and package tampering. Meet in a safe public location and do not let a rushed handoff prevent a proper check.

Evaluate it as a toy, not only as a collectible. Second-hand toys may have worn, modified or hidden defects that were not important to a display collector.
Check physical hazards
- Loose, broken or detachable small parts.
- Sharp edges, exposed wires or cracked plastic.
- Damaged battery compartments or leaking batteries.
- Flaking paint, brittle material or unpleasant chemical odor.
- Long cords, thin parts or accessories unsuitable for the child’s age.
Check the age guidance and warnings on the package when available. If the package is missing, use the maker’s information for the exact release rather than assuming a modern safety label applies to an older item.
Consider recalls and jurisdiction
Consumer-safety rules differ by country. UK second-hand guidance emphasizes trusted sources and physical checks because wear and hidden defects can matter. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s toy-safety FAQ describes tracking-label requirements for products intended for children 12 or younger; whether a label applies depends on the product and governing rules. A tracking label is not an authenticity certificate, and its presence does not prove that a used toy is safe after years of wear.
7. Handle authenticity claims carefully
Ask for provenance when the price or rarity makes it important: an original receipt, purchase history, documented collection source or photographs showing the item before packaging. Provenance supports a claim but is not conclusive; receipts and boxes can be separated from the item.
Do not borrow counterfeit statistics from unrelated product categories. A 28 May 2026 release from the UK Intellectual Property Office reported that one in four second-hand clothing buyers had unknowingly purchased a counterfeit online in the prior year, one in three said they did not check authenticity, and nearly 60% reported negative outcomes from buying fakes. Those figures concern clothing buyers and cannot be used as an estimate of counterfeit prevalence among action figures. No action-figure-specific counterfeit prevalence or buyer-outcome statistic is established here.
When a listing has an unusually low price, copied images, inconsistent markings, a seller who avoids specific questions or pressure to pay quickly, reduce your confidence and use the platform’s protections. If the evidence remains inadequate, walking away is the safest decision.

- Write down the target release. Record maker, line, character, edition, product number and the contents expected for that release.
- Request actual-item photographs. For loose figures, ask for all sides, markings, accessories, joints and defects. For sealed figures, add the back, sides, corners, window or blister and seals.
- Build a discrepancy list. Note every missing, replaced, repaired, modified, damaged or untested element.
- Ask function questions. Confirm joint behavior, electronics, battery condition, storage history and odor where relevant.
- Clarify package history. Ask whether it was opened, resealed, repaired or stored in heat, sunlight or humidity.
- Check seller and terms. Review relevant feedback, returns, buyer protection, shipping coverage and dispute deadlines.
- Choose based on your use. Set a different tolerance for a child’s plaything, a loose display figure and a sealed package collection.
- Document arrival. Photograph the unopened shipping carton, then compare the contents with the listing before discarding packaging.
9. Red flags that justify stopping the purchase
- The seller will not identify the exact release.
- Only stock photographs are provided for a supposedly used item.
- Important areas, such as the back, corners or seal, are never shown.
- “Complete” is claimed without a parts list or accessory photograph.
- Repairs, replacements or modifications are disclosed only after repeated questioning.
- The package appears resealed, but the seller insists it is factory sealed without explanation.
- The seller pressures you to pay outside the platform or immediately.
- The price is far below comparable listings and there is no credible reason.
- Returns or dispute terms are unclear, unusually restrictive or unavailable.
One red flag may have an innocent explanation. Several unresolved red flags mean the evidence does not support the purchase, regardless of how attractive the listing looks.
10. The decision standard
Buy when the exact release is identified, the condition matches your intended use, defects and missing components are documented, the seller answers specific questions, and the transaction gives you a realistic remedy if the item is not as described. For a loose figure, prioritize a verified parts list and honest function disclosure. For a sealed figure, prioritize complete package photography and a clear explanation of the seal’s history. If any of those essentials remains unknown, treat the item as a higher-risk purchase and price that uncertainty into your decision—or pass.
