The safest used-gadget purchase starts with the exact model, not the seller’s grade label or a bargain price. Confirm that the model still receives security updates, check recalls and electrical safety, inspect and test the actual unit, verify locks and account removal, price compatible replacement parts, and understand returns before money changes hands. The checklist below works for phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, game systems, wearables and other older electronics, with device-specific cautions where menus and risks differ.
1. Identify exactly what you are buying
“Used phone” or “older laptop” is not specific enough to assess. Record the manufacturer, model number, generation or year, storage or memory configuration, cellular or regional variant, and any included accessories. Two devices with similar names can have different radios, chargers, software support, batteries and replacement parts.
Match the gadget to the job
Write down the tasks the device must perform before comparing listings. A phone may need a particular carrier band, camera feature or app version; a laptop may need a certain operating system, ports or memory; a camera may need a specific lens mount and battery. A low price is irrelevant if the configuration cannot do the work.

Check current software support
Find the manufacturer’s current support page for the exact model and confirm whether it still receives operating-system and security updates. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises avoiding phones that are no longer supported where possible because they stop receiving manufacturer security updates (NCSC guidance). Support periods vary by model, region and software edition, so do not infer a date from a product family or from the seller’s description. The NCSC guide was published in 2020 and reviewed in 2022; use the maker’s current page to verify today’s status.

Look for recalls and safety alerts
Search the official product-safety or recall database for the country where you will use the gadget. Include the exact model, battery pack, charger and any accessories that will be supplied. UK guidance notes that an older product may have been recalled or may not meet current safety standards (UK second-hand safety guidance). A recall can affect a seemingly perfect item, and a replacement part may have its own notice.
2. Investigate the listing and seller before paying
Insist on the actual item
Prefer clear, recent photos of the unit you will receive, including model and serial labels when safe to show them. Stock images conceal cracks, mismatched parts and different configurations. Compare every photo with the written description and ask about anything that is not visible. Save the listing, photographs and messages; the FTC recommends retaining records and getting important answers in writing for marketplace purchases (FTC marketplace advice).
Ask focused questions
Request the device’s age, number of owners where known, repair and modification history, known faults, liquid exposure, included parts, and what functions were tested. For a connected device, ask whether the previous account has been removed and whether it can be set up by a new owner. Ask for the exact battery condition or diagnostic reading when the product provides one, rather than accepting “good battery” as a specification.
Recognize listing red flags
- Only generic photographs, no model or serial information, or a description that changes between messages.
- The seller avoids specific questions, will not demonstrate a key function, or insists on moving payment outside the marketplace.
- Contact details, ownership history or included accessories are unclear.
- The price is implausibly low for the stated configuration and condition.
- Terms such as “untested,” “as-is,” or “for parts” appear without a precise explanation of what was checked.
None of these proves fraud, but each increases the information you need before accepting the risk. If the seller will not supply it, choose another listing.
Read protection terms before checkout
Open the marketplace’s return, refund and dispute pages before paying. Note the deadline, who pays return shipping, exclusions for wear or opened packaging, and the evidence required for a claim. Check whether a warranty or “certified” statement comes from the seller, the marketplace or the manufacturer, and what it actually covers. The FTC stresses that policies and available remedies depend on the platform and transaction; do not assume that a private seller offers the same rights as a business.
3. Compare the whole deal, not a grade label
“Excellent,” “Grade A” and “refurbished” are not universal standards. Ask what the seller’s grade means and which tests produced it. The ACCC advises comparing the actual condition and protections rather than relying on a label (ACCC second-hand buying guide).

No official source establishes one battery-health cutoff or a universal grading scale for every older gadget. Treat a seller’s threshold as a term of that particular listing, not a general rule.

Exterior and structure
Use a bright light and inspect the case, screen or lens, corners, seams, hinges, buttons, ports, connectors and screw heads. Look for cracks, bends, deep dents, corrosion, loose parts, discoloration, residue and signs of opening or modification. Check for battery swelling: lifting screens, bulging covers, distorted seams or a device that rocks on a flat surface are reasons to stop using it and not charge it.
Labels and identity
Compare the model and serial information on the device, its settings screen and any paperwork with the listing. A mismatch can indicate a substituted unit or a different regional configuration. Photograph the identifying information and condition at handover or immediately after delivery, while preserving any privacy-sensitive details that do not need to be shared publicly.
Included items
Count every promised accessory. Inspect plugs, cable ends, power bricks, batteries, memory cards, remotes, stands and cases for damage or incorrect specifications. Do not assume that an accessory merely because it fits is approved for the device.
5. Test every function that matters
Power the gadget on and allow enough time for it to complete startup. Test the features tied to your intended use instead of relying on a seller’s statement that it “works.” The FTC and ACCC both recommend checking the actual product and preserving evidence of what was represented.
Core tests for most electronics
- Start-up, shutdown, sleep or standby, and any error messages.
- Screen, touch or controls, brightness, dead pixels and backlight uniformity where applicable.
- Speakers, microphones, headphone output, vibration and physical buttons.
- Every relevant port, connector, hinge, card slot and charging input.
- Wireless connections such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, GPS or NFC when fitted.
- Cameras, flashes, sensors and biometric readers if you need them.
- Charging behavior, power stability and whether the battery percentage changes normally.
Test with your own compatible cable or accessory when possible, but do not force a connector or use an unverified charger to make a demonstration work.

Allow time for a realistic test
A device that starts once may still overheat, lose connection or fail under load. Run the applications, recording, transfer, game, call or other task that is central to your purchase. Observe unusual heat, fan noise, shutdowns, flickering, charging interruptions or repeated error messages. For an expensive item, an independent inspection can be worthwhile; the ACCC specifically suggests independent advice for high-value products.
Online delivery check
Open the parcel promptly and compare the unit with the saved listing before the return deadline expires. Photograph packaging, serial labels, damage and missing items. Test the same functions immediately, then use the marketplace or seller process without delay if the item is not as described. Keep the shipping label and all correspondence.
6. Phone-specific checks
Activation and account locks
For a pre-owned iPhone, Apple’s official guidance is explicit: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” (Apple pre-owned iPhone guidance). The previous owner must remove the device from their account, and you should be able to reach the setup screen and configure it with your own account. Similar anti-theft or enterprise locks exist on other platforms; follow that manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming an erased screen proves ownership was released.
Carrier or network lock
Verify that the phone is unlocked for the network and country where you intend to use it. Insert a compatible SIM or complete an equivalent network test when practical. A phone can be fully functional yet unusable on your carrier because of a provider lock or regional radio variant.
Battery, parts and service history
Use the manufacturer’s settings or diagnostic page to check battery condition and parts or service history where the model supports those menus. Apple’s checks vary by iPhone model and iOS version, so follow the current instructions for the exact device. A replacement battery or display may work but affect features, warnings or future service; ask what was replaced and by whom.
Calls and connectivity
Make a test call, send a message or use mobile data if the seller and local rules permit. Check the IMEI or equivalent identifier against the carrier’s eligibility process where available. Do not publish that identifier unnecessarily; share it only with the party conducting the check.

7. Electrical safety and replacement parts
Older electrical products deserve a separate safety review. Health Canada warns that some older products may not meet current safety standards or may have been recalled, and that incompatible replacement parts can be unsafe (Health Canada electrical-product guidance).

Check the power chain
- Confirm the device’s required voltage, current, polarity, connector and approved charger type.
- Check that a replacement battery has the exact chemistry, voltage, connector and protection specifications.
- Do not use a swollen, leaking, hot or physically damaged lithium-ion battery.
- Replace damaged cords, cracked plugs and loose adapters rather than taping or improvising them.
- Buy replacement parts from a source that identifies the correct model; physical fit alone is not proof of electrical compatibility.
Unknown-source lithium-ion batteries can present fire and injury risks. If safety is uncertain, disconnect power, stop testing and seek qualified inspection instead of experimenting with another charger.
8. Decide whether the price still makes sense
Calculate the usable cost before committing:
- Start with the purchase price and delivery or marketplace fees.
- Add every missing essential accessory, using only parts confirmed compatible with the exact model.
- Add a realistic repair or battery estimate when testing found a defect or limited condition.
- Account for the value of the return window, warranty and seller support you would lose with a cheaper, unprotected listing.
- Compare that total with another unit that has the required support, condition and protection.
The sources do not provide a general failure rate, expected lifespan, savings percentage or battery threshold. Do not create a false “used gadgets should cost X percent less” rule; make the decision from the specific unit and its recoverable risks.

Before accepting an in-person purchase
Complete the identity, lock and function checks while you can still decline. Use a public, lawful meeting arrangement and keep payment inside the marketplace when that is an option. Do not let time pressure prevent a reset, test call or inspection of the serial information.
Immediately after receiving a connected device
- Photograph the delivered condition and save the listing and messages.
- Confirm that the previous owner’s account, activation lock and management profile are removed.
- Follow the manufacturer’s official erase or factory-reset procedure.
- Install all available operating-system and security updates.
- Enable a strong screen lock, automatic updates and device-finding or backup features where supported.
- Review privacy, location, payment and app permissions before adding personal data.
The NCSC recommends resetting second-hand devices to remove the previous owner’s data and enabling automatic updates when prompted (NCSC second-hand device guidance).

The device is not as described
Stop altering or repairing it until you have documented the discrepancy. Save photographs, video of the fault, the serial number, the listing and the seller’s messages. Contact the seller through the marketplace within the stated deadline and request the remedy allowed by the terms. Escalate through the platform’s dispute process if the seller does not resolve it.

A lock prevents setup
Do not pay a stranger for an unofficial unlock and do not try to bypass an anti-theft mechanism. Ask the previous owner to remove the device from their account through the official process. If that cannot happen, use the return or dispute route.
There is a safety defect
Unplug the gadget, stop charging it and move it away from flammable materials if it is hot, swollen, smoking or sparking. Follow local emergency and product-recall instructions. Do not resell a hazardous item; report a confirmed safety issue through the relevant consumer-safety authority.
A repair costs more than expected
Obtain an itemized estimate from a qualified repairer and compare it with the cost of another unit that already meets your support and safety requirements. For high-value electronics, an independent inspection before authorizing work can prevent spending on a device with additional hidden faults.

11. A compact decision checklist
- Exact model, generation, configuration and regional compatibility identified.
- Current manufacturer support status checked.
- Official recalls and safety alerts searched for the product and accessories.
- Actual-item photos, seller answers and listing terms saved.
- Return deadline, warranty wording, shipping fees and dispute process understood.
- Case, screen, ports, controls, connectors, battery and accessories inspected.
- Important functions tested under realistic use.
- Account, activation, enterprise and network locks cleared.
- Battery and repair history checked where the device provides it.
- Charger, battery, cable and adapter compatibility confirmed.
- Total cost including likely repairs calculated.
- After purchase: factory reset, updates, screen lock and automatic updates completed.
If any essential item remains unknown—especially security support, ownership lock, electrical safety or return protection—the uncertainty is part of the price. A different listing with verifiable information is usually the safer purchase.

Consumer rights, warranty obligations, recall systems and marketplace remedies differ by country and by whether the seller is a business or private individual. Treat the FTC’s marketplace advice, UK guidance, Canadian safety warnings and Australian consumer guidance as applicable to their stated jurisdictions, then confirm the rules where you live.
