Before paying for a used Japanese flip phone, get the exact model and carrier variant, its 15-digit IMEI, SIM-lock status, and a clear return policy. Then verify the original carrier has not restricted the handset, compare its network bands and communication methods with your carrier in the country where you will use it, and confirm voice and VoLTE support. An unlocked label, 4G logo, or a matching frequency band alone does not prove that calls, data, or messaging will work.

The checks that determine whether the phone will work

Japanese keitai models often have several carrier-specific variants that look almost identical. A listing titled only “Japanese flip phone” does not identify the radio hardware, software, lock status, or network history. Treat the purchase as a compatibility investigation, not simply a cosmetic inspection.

Check What to obtain Why it matters
Exact identity Full model code and original carrier variant Different variants can support different bands, transmission methods, SIM policies, and firmware.
IMEI status 15-digit IMEI and a result from the original carrier’s restriction lookup A handset can be blocked for network use even when it powers on and accepts a SIM.
SIM lock Current lock state and, if locked, the documented unlock route Unlocking permits another carrier’s SIM in principle, but does not create missing radio or voice compatibility.
Radio support Official bands and communication methods for the exact model Frequency overlap alone does not guarantee registration, coverage, speed, or roaming.
Voice service Carrier confirmation of voice and VoLTE support for that handset Data may work while calls fail, especially on networks retiring 3G or requiring approved VoLTE devices.
Condition and seller protection Actual-device photos, battery information, test results, and return terms A technically compatible phone can still be a poor purchase if the hinge, battery, port, or keypad is damaged.

Step 1: Identify the exact handset

Request the complete model code

Ask the seller to photograph the model label in the battery compartment, on the rear casing, or in the settings screen. Record every letter, number, suffix, and carrier marking. “Model X” or a product-family name is insufficient when several Japanese operators sold related versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also record the original network—such as SoftBank, au, or NTT DOCOMO—because the carrier variant determines which official specification page and restriction checker apply. A seller’s title, stock photograph, or statement that the phone is “unlocked” is not a substitute for the code.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Match the specification to your country

Use the manufacturer or original carrier specification for that exact variant. Note supported communication methods, not just a list of frequencies. au publishes model-level frequency information but explicitly cautions that frequency support does not guarantee operation on another carrier. A band can be present while network registration, carrier configuration, roaming, or voice provisioning still fails.

Do this comparison for the country and carrier where the phone will actually be used. A handset that was designed for a Japanese network may behave differently abroad, and a phone that works for one domestic operator may not work for another using some of the same frequencies.

Step 2: Check the IMEI and network-use restriction

Get the IMEI before sending payment

Request the 15-digit IMEI in text and, if possible, a photograph showing the same number on the handset. Do not rely only on a seller’s screenshot: run the check yourself immediately before purchase. For a dual-IMEI device, ask for every IMEI and check each one that can be used for cellular service.

Use the original carrier’s checker

SoftBank’s network-use restriction tool accepts a 15-digit IMEI. Its second-hand-device warning says a handset can be restricted when it was improperly obtained, and states that a restriction already imposed will not be removed. In the original Japanese, SoftBank warns: “利用制限が実施された携帯電話機の利用制限解除はいたしませんのでご注意ください。” In context, that means SoftBank will not lift a usage restriction placed on the phone.

Use the applicable original carrier’s lookup for devices that were sold through another network. Check close to the transaction because the status belongs to the handset and can change after a seller first lists it. Save the result with the date and IMEI as part of your purchase record.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Interpret a blocked result conservatively

Do not buy a phone whose lookup shows a usage restriction, or whose IMEI cannot be verified. A clean result is necessary but not sufficient: it says nothing about SIM locking, bands, VoLTE, battery health, or the seller’s return practices.

Step 3: Separate SIM lock from compatibility

Understand what unlocking actually changes

SoftBank explains that removing a SIM lock enables use of another carrier’s SIM in principle. It does not guarantee calls, packet data, messaging, tethering, or other services on that carrier. Ask whether the handset is already unlocked, when it was unlocked, and whether the seller can show the setting or an actual test with a different SIM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the phone is locked, identify the original operator’s unlock procedure and eligibility rules before purchase. A device that cannot be unlocked may be unusable with your SIM even when its frequencies look suitable.

Check the target carrier’s own policy

NTT DOCOMO states that SIM-locked or transmission-incompatible devices cannot use its services and generally does not perform operation checks or guarantee operation for combinations involving another carrier’s handset or subscription. That places the verification burden on you: ask the target carrier whether it supports the exact model and subscription, rather than assuming a universal unlocked-device policy.

Step 4: Verify voice, VoLTE, and network retirement

Why data-band matching is not enough

Calling may depend on VoLTE registration, an approved device profile, a compatible SIM, and carrier provisioning. A phone can show signal bars or use some mobile data while failing to place or receive calls. Check voice compatibility as a separate requirement.

Account for 3G shutdowns

SoftBank’s 2024 notice for users affected after April 16 says that people using 3G or non-VoLTE devices need to change to a 4G/5G model that supports VoLTE service. That notice is specific to SoftBank’s service and timetable; it is not a universal rule for every country. It does demonstrate why an older Japanese flip phone can become unusable for voice even when it still powers on.

Confirm the SIM and VoLTE combination

au notes that its VoLTE-capable phones require an au VoLTE-compatible SIM to make VoLTE calls. Ask your carrier which SIM generation, account feature, and activation profile are required for the exact handset. Do not infer voice support from the word “LTE” in a listing.

Step 5: Check setup requirements and support limits

Plan for APN configuration

au says that an access-point-name (APN) configuration may be required. Obtain the target carrier’s current APN values and confirm that the phone exposes editable APN settings. Some feature-phone interfaces hide or restrict these fields, so verify the menu path before buying.

Set expectations for carrier assistance

SoftBank does not guarantee functions or calls when its SIM is used in another operator’s handset. DOCOMO similarly says it generally will not test or guarantee operation for another carrier’s handset and subscription. If the phone fails after insertion, customer support may be unable to troubleshoot a model it does not sell. Keep the seller’s return window long enough to complete activation, calling, texting, and data tests.

Step 6: Inspect the physical phone and battery

Request photos of the actual unit

Ask for sharp, well-lit photos of the front and back, both sides, the hinge, screen, keypad, battery compartment, charging port, and labels. Stock images conceal wear and may show a different variant. Look for cracks, lifted plastics, missing screws, corrosion, deep scratches across the display, and stress marks around the hinge.

Ask direct condition questions

  • How long does the battery last during ordinary use, and does the phone shut down under load?
  • Does it charge reliably, and is the port loose or intermittent?
  • Has it been exposed to liquid, repaired, or opened?
  • Are all keys, navigation controls, camera functions, speakers, and microphones working?
  • Is the handset reset, free of the previous owner’s account, and ready for activation?
  • Which charger, battery, manuals, or adapters are included?

Japanese flip phones often use model-specific batteries and chargers. Do not order a replacement part until you have the exact compatible part number; a battery that fits physically can still have the wrong contacts, capacity, or protection circuitry.

Step 7: Test before accepting the purchase

In-person test sequence

  1. Photograph the IMEI and model code, then compare them with the listing and the restriction lookup result.
  2. Power the phone off and on. Confirm it completes startup without an account prompt or error.
  3. Open and close the hinge repeatedly, checking for looseness, grinding, cracked plastic, or a display that cuts out at a particular angle.
  4. Test the main and external screens, keypad, navigation buttons, backlight, camera, flash, speaker, microphone, vibration, and headphone or accessory functions where fitted.
  5. Insert the intended SIM. Confirm registration, signal, outgoing and incoming calls, SMS, mobile data, and any required APN entry.
  6. Make a VoLTE call if the carrier uses VoLTE, and test the phone in the locations where you expect to use it.
  7. Connect the charger, watch for stable charging, and inspect the battery compartment for swelling, corrosion, or heat.

Remote-purchase procedure

Ask the seller to demonstrate power-up, a call, mobile data, and the settings page showing model and lock information. Require photos of the actual phone rather than catalogue images. Pay only when the IMEI is available for an independent check, and choose a seller offering a written return window that covers compatibility testing. Record the unboxing and the phone’s condition on arrival so a return dispute has evidence.

How to compare two or more candidate phones

Build a shortlist using the same questions for every handset. The first five rows below can determine whether service works at all; the remaining rows determine whether the second-hand purchase is acceptable.

Comparison axis Question to answer Evidence to keep
Exact variant Is the full model code and original carrier known? Label or settings photograph and official specification.
Network methods and bands Does the target carrier list the required technologies and frequencies for this variant? Model-level carrier or manufacturer specification.
Voice and VoLTE Will the target carrier provision calls and VoLTE for this handset and SIM? Written carrier confirmation or a successful live test.
SIM-lock state Is the phone unlocked, or can it be unlocked under the original operator’s rules? Settings screen, unlock record, or seller demonstration.
IMEI restriction Does the original carrier’s checker show unrestricted use? Your own dated lookup result.
Battery and parts Is runtime acceptable and is a correct replacement battery available? Seller’s runtime description and exact part number.
Condition Are hinge, screen, keypad, ports, camera, speaker, and microphone sound? Actual-device photos and test checklist.

Common failure scenarios and what to do

“The phone is unlocked, but it shows no service”

Recheck the exact variant, supported communication methods, and bands. Then ask the carrier whether that model is accepted on its network and whether the SIM is provisioned correctly. Unlock status does not add missing frequencies or carrier profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Mobile data works, but calls do not”

Investigate VoLTE registration, SIM requirements, and the carrier’s device approval policy. An older 3G or non-VoLTE handset may lose voice service as a network retires legacy technology even though some data functions appear available.

“The IMEI was clean when listed, but service is later blocked”

Contact the seller immediately with your dated lookup result and request a return. SoftBank states that restrictions already implemented will not be lifted, so do not assume the original owner can fix the status.

“The carrier says it cannot support the phone”

Ask for the exact model and subscription combination to be checked, but do not expect the carrier to perform a full test for another operator’s handset. Use the seller’s return protection rather than buying on the assumption that support will be available.

“The replacement battery or charger does not fit”

Stop using improvised parts. Confirm the model-specific part number and connector before ordering. Accessories are not interchangeable merely because two phones share a brand or shell design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical pass-or-fail decision

Proceed only when all of these conditions are documented:

  • The full model code and original carrier variant are known.
  • The IMEI is available, independently checked, and unrestricted at the time of purchase.
  • The SIM-lock state and any unlock path are clear.
  • The target carrier confirms network, voice, and VoLTE compatibility for that exact model, or you can perform a complete live test during a protected return period.
  • Any APN setup required by the carrier can be entered on the phone.
  • Photos and tests show an acceptable hinge, display, keypad, port, battery, and audio hardware.
  • The seller provides a realistic return route if activation, calls, or data fail.

If one of the first five conditions is unresolved, treat the phone as incompatible until proven otherwise. Physical flaws can sometimes be repaired; a blocked IMEI, unsupported voice technology, or missing radio band generally cannot be fixed economically by the buyer.

Questions to send a seller before buying

Copy this checklist into your message:

  • What is the complete model code and original Japanese carrier?
  • What is the 15-digit IMEI for each cellular slot?
  • What result does the original carrier’s network-use restriction checker show today?
  • Is the phone SIM-locked, and can you show the unlock status?
  • Which communication methods and frequency bands does this exact variant support?
  • Has it been tested for calls, VoLTE, SMS, mobile data, and APN editing with the intended carrier?
  • What is the battery’s present runtime, and has it been replaced or exposed to liquid?
  • Are the hinge, screens, keys, camera, speaker, microphone, and charging port fully functional?
  • Is the handset reset and free of previous accounts?
  • What charger and battery are included, and what is the return deadline if the phone cannot activate?

Only after the seller answers these questions and your carrier confirms the combination should you treat the asking price as relevant. The decisive question is not whether the handset is Japanese, small, or unlocked; it is whether this exact variant is unrestricted, radio-compatible, provisioned for voice, and protected by a return option.
