Before buying a used Honda NSX, identify its generation, exact model and market specification, then verify its history and have it inspected by a shop experienced with that generation. A first-generation NA1 or NA2 needs close attention to scheduled belt service, cooling, engine leaks, gearbox history where applicable, and aluminium-body repairs. A second-generation NC1 also needs hybrid-system and battery diagnostics, software-update checks, and a long road test. In either case, verify recalls by VIN through the official service for the car’s market.
Start by identifying which NSX you are considering
“NSX” covers two substantially different generations, so a checklist for one should not be applied to the other. The first generation ran from 1990 to 2005 and includes NA1 and NA2 configurations. The second generation, identified as NC1, ran from 2016 to 2022. Year, market, model, transmission and equipment affect what to verify and which service information applies.
| Generation | Model years | Checks that define the inspection |
|---|---|---|
| First generation (NA1/NA2) | 1990–2005 | Timing-belt and water-pump records, cooling system, engine leaks and mounts, applicable early five-speed gearbox history, and aluminium-body repairs |
| Second generation (NC1) | 2016–2022 | Hybrid-system and battery diagnostics, applicable 9DCT software updates, fault-code review, condition checks and a sufficiently long road test |
Do not rely on a seller’s description, trim badges or a registration listing alone to establish identity. Ask for the car’s identifying documents and reconcile its frame or model code, engine, transmission, equipment and market specification with the claimed year and grade. A Japanese-market Honda NSX and a North American Acura NSX may differ in specification, documentation and import requirements. For an imported car, confirm its paperwork and eligibility with the authorities responsible for registration where you live; the rules depend on location.
Establish the car’s exact identity before applying a service interval or interpreting a specialist’s findings. Make a note of the model year, transmission, market and any claimed special grade, then give that information to the inspection shop. This helps the shop select service information relevant to the individual car rather than relying on a generic description of an “NSX.” If documents, seller claims and the car itself do not line up, pause and ask for the discrepancy to be resolved before moving on to price negotiations.

Build a record of the car before inspecting it
Ask for dated invoices and service records, not just a verbal account or a stamped book. The records should let you connect the work to the car and establish when and at what mileage it was performed. Look for continuity across ownership, servicing, repairs and modifications, and compare descriptions and dates against the vehicle itself. Missing records do not automatically prove poor care, but they leave you with less evidence and can make it harder to price deferred work confidently.
Acura’s 2000 owner’s manual advises owners to retain receipts as proof of service and have the person who performed the work complete the maintenance record. It also says dealer servicing is not mandatory for warranty purposes if a qualified service facility or skilled person does the work. For a buyer, the practical distinction is the quality and traceability of the work, not simply whether a dealership stamped a book.
For any claimed special grade, seek documentation that supports the claim; a badge is not proof. Check whether modifications or repairs are recorded and whether the seller can explain them. For a car with an uncertain history, treat provenance as an open question to resolve rather than assuming that an attractive presentation establishes originality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the records to make a short list of questions for the seller and inspector. For each major job, note the date, mileage, description and who carried it out. If an invoice refers to a part or repair but does not clearly identify the car, ask whether there is supporting documentation. An apparently complete stamped book may still leave gaps about the scope of a job, while an invoice from a qualified independent specialist can document work clearly. Keep confirmed history separate from claims that remain unverified.
No published failure-rate statistic has been established for the inspection items in this guide. They are practical buyer-guide prompts, not a prediction that a particular defect is common or inevitable. A finding on one car should be evaluated on its own evidence, history and inspection rather than turned into a claim about every NSX.
Inspecting a first-generation NA1 or NA2
Timing belt and water pump
Ask for an invoice showing the date and mileage of the timing-belt and water-pump work. If the evidence is missing, vague or inconsistent, have an NSX specialist provide a written estimate before agreeing on a price. That estimate helps turn an unknown maintenance item into a cost you can weigh against the asking price.
Published buyer-guide recommendations do not all use the same interval. MotorTrend’s 2015 guide gives a recommendation of 90,000 miles and 105,000 miles for NA2; Autocar’s used-car guide gives 70,000 miles or seven years, with no publication date stated on the retrieved page. These are guide figures, not a universal schedule for every NSX. Check official maintenance information for the exact year and market before treating any interval as applicable to the car you are buying.
Recommended Free Tools
When reviewing an invoice, check that it identifies the work rather than simply saying “service.” If the timing-belt or water-pump date is known but the mileage is not, or vice versa, flag the gap for the specialist. Do not assume that a seller’s estimate of when work is “due” follows the correct schedule: recommendations cited by buyer guides differ, and the official maintenance information for the specific year and market is the reference to confirm. If the work is undocumented, use a written estimate to account for the uncertainty rather than treating a verbal assurance as proof.

Cooling system
With the engine bay accessible, examine the coolant reservoir and hoses for cracks, brittleness, hardened residue and signs of leakage. Ask which cooling components have been replaced and whether the invoices support the answer. A seller’s general assurance that the car has been maintained is less useful than a consistent service history and evidence for the parts in question.
Record what you can see, but leave diagnosis and repair scope to the specialist. A visible residue, damaged hose or other concern deserves a closer assessment, not an assumption about the extent or cost of work. Ask the seller for the history of cooling-system maintenance and have the inspector compare that account with the condition of the parts and the available invoices. If the evidence is incomplete, include the uncertainty in the written findings and purchase-cost discussion.
Engine leaks, mounts and noises
After the road test, look for oil around the valve-cover gaskets, rear camshaft plugs and VTEC solenoids. Check for excessive engine movement or knocking that could point to worn mounts. These are inspection prompts, not diagnoses: if a leak, movement or sound concerns you, ask a specialist to determine its source and estimate the work.

During the drive, listen for unusual engine, transmission, wheel and suspension noises. Pay attention to how the clutch operates and whether a noise changes when you depress it. Do not accept a guess about a concerning sound as a repair plan; have it investigated before purchase.
Use the road test to give the inspector useful observations. Note when a sound occurs, whether it changes with speed or clutch operation, and whether it is present at the beginning of the drive or after the car has been used. The observation is not a diagnosis, but it can help the specialist reproduce and assess the concern. Have any oil leak checked after the drive as well, since an inspection before driving may not show all evidence present after the car has been run.
Early five-speed gearbox evidence
For an applicable early five-speed gearbox, ask the inspector to identify the gearbox number. If it falls within the buyer-guide range J4A4-1003542 to J4A4-1005978, request records of corrective work. This range is a targeted reason to check the individual car’s history; it does not mean every early NSX has the same issue.
Do not apply this gearbox check indiscriminately to every first-generation example. First establish the transmission fitted to the car and whether the cited range is relevant, then have the specialist confirm the gearbox number. If it is in the range, seek documentary evidence of corrective work and ask the inspector to explain any remaining uncertainty. If records are absent, treat that as an item for further investigation and a cost estimate, not as proof that work has or has not been done.
Cabin equipment, climate control and seals
Test climate control at every fan speed, then check the air conditioning and heater. Operate the windows and door handles, and inspect roof seals. Older electronics, slow windows and aged rubber trim can add time and expense even if the car performs well on the road. Note each fault separately so a specialist can assess its cause and likely repair rather than folding several untested items into a vague “needs attention” comment.

- FE NFE AND ZINC AUTO DETECTION – AUTOMATIC SUBSTRATE RECOGNITION Automatically identifies steel (Fe), aluminum (NFe) and galvanized surfaces (Zn), supporting inspection of modern vehicles built with mixed body materials without manual switching or mode selection.
- PROFESSIONAL PROBE DESIGN – STABLE AND REPEATABLE CONTACT Engineered probe construction supports consistent surface engagement and repeatable readings during multi-point inspection routines in professional workshop environments.
- FAST PANEL-TO-PANEL MEASUREMENT FLOW – EFFICIENT FULL VEHICLE SCANNING Optimized for efficient professional workflow: place the probe vertically, read the value and continue across panels during dealership and workshop-based inspections.
Test the equipment yourself during the inspection rather than relying on a seller’s summary. Make a simple list of what works and what does not, including whether the fan operates at every setting and whether the heater and air conditioning function. Check each window and handle and look over the roof seals. A fault in an older electrical component or rubber part may not prevent a test drive, but it still belongs in the condition assessment and estimate of deferred work.
Assessing the aluminium body and repair history
The first-generation NSX’s aluminium structure makes knowledgeable assessment of repairs especially important. A magnet is not a reliable way to find filler or judge repair quality on this car. Review accident history and repair invoices, inspect panel fit and finish in good light, and arrange a structural assessment at a shop familiar with the NSX’s body construction and repair methods.
A paint-thickness gauge can help with an initial paint survey, but it cannot certify the car, establish structural integrity or replace an experienced inspection. Treat readings as one clue for the specialist, not as a verdict. Ask the inspector to explain any evidence of repainting or repair and whether the work appears consistent with the car’s records.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePrioritize the inspector’s familiarity with aluminium construction and appropriate repair methods over a quick test with a general-purpose tool. A paint reading may prompt a question about a panel, but it cannot tell you on its own whether a repair was properly carried out or whether the underlying structure is sound. Compare any repair evidence with invoices and accident-history information, and ask the shop to document areas that need further assessment. If the seller cannot provide a clear account of a visible repair, let the specialist evaluate it before you decide whether the car’s condition and asking price make sense.
Inspecting a second-generation NC1
The NC1’s inspection should include the hybrid system and its supporting electronics, not only a conventional mechanical check. Request continuous service records and original documents where available. Establish whether the work was done by a qualified Acura or Honda facility or an NSX specialist, and ask for evidence of applicable 9DCT software updates.
Ask the inspection shop to perform ECU diagnostics and review fault codes, check battery condition, and include a cold start. A short drive may not expose a concern that appears only after the car is warm, so arrange a road test long enough to evaluate its behavior in both conditions. Have the shop check tyres and their date codes, suspension, brakes, chassis, underbody, paint and repair history.
Make sure the inspection plan includes all of these items rather than assuming a routine mechanical check covers them. Request the diagnostic findings and fault-code review in the shop’s report, along with its assessment of battery condition and confirmation of applicable software-update history. The cold start and longer road test serve different purposes: the former lets the shop assess the car from a cold start, while the extended drive gives it time to assess behavior once warm. Ask the inspector to explain any unresolved fault or uncertainty and whether further diagnosis is needed.
Tyre condition and date codes, suspension, brakes, chassis and underbody should be reviewed alongside the hybrid and electronic checks. Also include paint and repair history in the assessment; the need for a knowledgeable body inspection does not disappear because the car is a newer generation. Ask the shop to distinguish what it has directly confirmed from what requires additional testing, so you can make a decision based on documented findings rather than a broad “passed inspection” description.

Before committing, consider whether you have realistic access to qualified service and parts for this model’s hybrid, drivetrain, body and electronic components. Confirm that locally available support matches the kind of work the individual car may need; do not assume that general experience with older NSXs is sufficient for an NC1.
Availability of a local specialist and parts is part of the ownership decision, not just an inspection-day question. If the inspection identifies a model-specific hybrid, drivetrain, body or electronic concern, ask where that work could be performed and whether the parts needed are obtainable. No current parts price or universal service network has been established here, so check access for your location and the specific car before relying on an assumption about future support.
Compare cars by evidence and condition, not just mileage
A low odometer reading or a rare-model claim cannot substitute for a consistent history and an assessment of present condition. Compare each candidate across these practical factors:

There is no current fair-market value established here. Obtain a current valuation for the specific car and location rather than treating rarity or a generic asking-price range as proof that a particular example is fairly priced.
When comparing two cars, use the same questions and record the answers in the same format. One example may have higher mileage but clearer service evidence, while another may have a lower indicated mileage but gaps in its history; compare documentation and condition, not choosing by one number alone. Have the specialist estimate identified work before you compare asking prices. This does not create a universal formula for value, but it gives you a more grounded basis for deciding which car fits your budget and support options.
Likewise, do not let an advertised special grade settle a question of authenticity. The buyer guide reports that Honda figures for early Type R sales are cited as both 483 and 500, which is a reason to require documentation for an individual claimed Type R rather than rely on a disputed total or a badge. Car Collector International’s 2026 guide reports 350 globally for the 2022 Type S final variant; verify production details against Honda records before presenting that as a definitive rarity claim. Rarity figures can inform questions, but they do not replace the vehicle’s own evidence or inspection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify recalls, registration and import status separately
Check open recalls using the vehicle identification number (VIN) through the official recall lookup relevant to the car’s market. A model-wide search or the seller’s assurance cannot establish whether a particular VIN has an open recall or service campaign. If the car is imported, separately confirm that its age, documents and specification meet the rules for registration in your jurisdiction. These answers are specific to the VIN, market and location, so resolve them before purchase rather than assuming a car that is already for sale is eligible.

Parts support and the first-generation restoration programme
Honda announced that Honda Heritage Works would begin on April 1, 2026, starting with the first-generation NSX. The programme includes selected compatible or reproduced parts for discontinued components, distributed globally through each country’s usual genuine-parts channels, as well as a Honda restoration service in Japan. Honda said both types of Honda Heritage Parts would be available globally in its Heritage Parts lineup. That does not establish that every discontinued part is included or currently obtainable: check whether the specific part you need is listed and available for your car.
Use the programme as a potential support resource, not a blanket assurance that every part for every car is in stock. If a first-generation inspection reveals a specific discontinued component is needed, confirm that exact part’s current listing and availability through the usual genuine-parts channel in your country. The announced restoration service is in Japan, so do not assume it is locally available. If future parts support matters to your decision, check the programme’s current information before purchase rather than basing a repair plan on a general announcement.
Turn the inspection into a purchase decision
- Request the records and identification documents. Match the car’s generation, model, market, transmission and claimed grade to the paperwork, and note gaps that need explanation.
- Arrange a generation-appropriate inspection. Choose a shop with NSX experience and ask it to address the relevant checklist above, including body structure on a first-generation car or hybrid diagnostics on an NC1.
- Get findings and estimates in writing. Separate confirmed defects from questions that need more diagnosis, and cost the work before treating the asking price as the full purchase cost.
- Resolve VIN and location-dependent questions. Check recalls through the appropriate official lookup and verify registration or import eligibility with the responsible local authority.
- Decide using the combined evidence. Weigh documentation, current condition, originality, service access and estimated work alongside price; walk away or renegotiate if important claims cannot be verified to your satisfaction.
Before booking, tell the shop which generation and market the car represents and share the seller’s claimed model and service history. Ask for a written scope that covers the generation-specific items in this guide. If the seller will not allow an appropriate inspection or key documentation cannot be reconciled, you may not have enough evidence to make a confident decision. Whether you proceed, renegotiate or walk away is ultimately a judgment about the specific car, but it should follow the records, inspection findings, estimates and official checks—not a badge, a verbal promise or a single headline figure.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I look for when buying a 1990 NA1 manual NSX?
First confirm the car’s identity, market specification, engine, transmission and claimed grade from its documents rather than relying on badges. Request dated service records, especially for timing-belt and water-pump work, and arrange an NSX-experienced inspection covering cooling, leaks and mounts, applicable gearbox history, and aluminium-body repairs. The early five-speed gearbox number should be checked against the cited buyer-guide range where applicable.
How often should the NSX timing belt and water pump be replaced?
The buyer guides cited here give different figures: MotorTrend’s 2015 guide says 90,000 miles and 105,000 miles for NA2, while Autocar gives 70,000 miles or seven years. These are not a universal schedule. Confirm the official maintenance information for the car’s exact year and market, and ask for dated, mileage-specific evidence of prior work.
Can I use a magnet or paint gauge to check an NSX for repairs?
A magnet is not a reliable way to find filler or judge repair quality on the first-generation NSX’s aluminium structure. A paint-thickness gauge can contribute to an initial paint survey, but it cannot certify the car or assess structural integrity. Review repair records and have an NSX-experienced shop inspect the body and repair quality.
What should an NC1 pre-purchase inspection include?
Request a cold start, ECU diagnostics and fault-code review, battery-condition check, evidence of applicable 9DCT software updates, and a road test long enough to assess the car once warm. The inspection should also cover tyres and date codes, suspension, brakes, chassis, underbody, paint and repair history, and whether qualified local service and parts support is available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I verify an NSX recall or import eligibility?
Use the official recall lookup for the car’s market and its VIN to check for open recalls. Import and registration eligibility depend on the vehicle and jurisdiction, so confirm requirements with the responsible authorities where you intend to register it. The status or eligibility of a specific car is not established here.
Does Honda Heritage Works mean every first-generation NSX part is available?
No. Honda announced a programme beginning April 1, 2026, with selected compatible or reproduced parts and a restoration service in Japan. Check whether the specific part is listed and currently obtainable through the usual genuine-parts channel in your country.
The Bottom Line
Buy the individual NSX that its records and inspection support—not the one that sounds rarest or has the lowest mileage. Confirm its generation and market, have a qualified NSX specialist assess the generation-specific mechanical and body or hybrid systems, price identified work in writing, and independently verify VIN recalls and local registration requirements before committing.
