A sale is worthwhile only when the exact item meets your needs, the final amount is genuinely lower than comparable offers, and the written return, warranty and service terms protect you. Before paying in India, verify the model or variant, total cost, condition, packaging, included items and after-sales support. The checks overlap across categories, but a two-wheeler needs an on-road and service review, a suitcase needs a fit-and-durability review, and an appliance needs capacity, installation and running-cost checks.

Begin with the final deal, not the advertised discount

A large “off” percentage can be calculated from a crossed-out price that does not apply to the same model or configuration. Treat the discount label as an invitation to investigate, not proof of value. Write down the exact item you intend to buy and compare the amount you will actually pay.

  1. Record the identity of the item. Note the brand, model number, variant, size, colour, capacity and included accessories. Similar-looking products can have different specifications and prices.
  2. Calculate the complete payable amount. Add delivery, installation, registration, handling, insurance, accessories, taxes and any other mandatory fee. For a vehicle, compare the complete on-road quotation rather than only the ex-showroom or headline sale price.
  3. Check that the MRP and sale price describe the same configuration. A price for a smaller capacity, older variant or bundle without accessories cannot establish a saving on the version you are considering. Do not infer a historical price or discount percentage from an unverified crossed-out figure.
  4. Compare like with like. Use the exact model or variant when checking another seller. A cheaper offer may omit installation, a charger, a warranty extension, a required accessory or a service that the other quotation includes.
  5. Read the written terms before payment. Look for return, refund, replacement, cancellation, warranty and guarantee conditions, including exclusions, time limits, transport responsibility and restocking or installation requirements.
  6. Check stock and delivery status. Ask whether the item is new, display stock, refurbished, open-box or previously registered. The description should say so clearly; do not rely on a verbal assurance alone.
  7. Save evidence. Keep a screenshot or copy of the listing, offer banner, price breakdown, seller details and terms, along with the invoice and payment confirmation.
Deal detail Question to ask Evidence to retain
Price What is the final amount payable after every compulsory fee? Itemised quotation, cart total or signed pro-forma invoice
Configuration Does the quoted amount name the exact model, variant, size or capacity? Model number and configuration on the invoice
Condition Is it new and sealed, or is it display, open-box, refurbished or used? Listing wording and photographs of packaging
Included items Which accessories, installation, registration or services are included? Written bundle description and quotation
After-sales Who handles a defect, and what are the deadlines and exclusions? Seller policy and manufacturer warranty document

For packaged goods, the Department of Consumer Affairs says the printed MRP is the maximum retail price; do not pay above it. Keep the receipt. Its Consumer Handbook also advises checking terms of use, refund and replacement policies, warranty or guarantee conditions, and the condition of goods before accepting them.

Inspect the item and package before accepting it

Whether you buy online or in a shop, compare what arrives with the invoice and listing before signing for delivery or taking it away. Photograph the outer carton, seals, labels, serial or chassis number and any visible damage. If packaging is torn, wet, re-taped or missing a seal, ask the seller to record the condition and explain the replacement process before you accept it.

  • Check that the model, colour, size, capacity and serial, chassis or identification number match your order.
  • Look for dents, cracks, scratches, corrosion, stains, missing fasteners or signs of use that do not fit a new-product description.
  • Count accessories, manuals, keys, remotes, chargers, mounting parts and warranty cards against the written list.
  • Ask for missing specifications or safety information before deciding. The Department of Consumer Affairs states that a consumer should insist on receiving product or service information before making a choice, and describes safety, information and choice as consumer rights on its Consumer Rights page.
  • Do not sign a delivery note saying “received in good condition” when you have not inspected the item. If the courier requires an immediate signature, write a damage observation or follow the platform’s inspection-on-delivery procedure.

Two-wheeler checks: separate the vehicle, the on-road cost and the service promise

A two-wheeler sale can involve a cash discount, exchange allowance, finance offer, free accessory or a registration package. Evaluate the vehicle you will receive and the complete on-road obligation separately. A general checklist cannot certify a particular model or used vehicle; these are decision prompts, not a government-prescribed inspection procedure.

Confirm the exact model and delivery condition

  • Write down the manufacturer, model, variant, engine or motor type, battery size where relevant, colour and model year. Check that the quotation and invoice use the same description.
  • List every included item: standard safety equipment, keys, charger, tool kit, luggage rack, floor mat or other accessory. A “free” item may be substituted or excluded from the base price, so obtain its description in writing.
  • At handover, compare the vehicle identification number and engine or motor number with the documents. Examine panels, paint, lamps, switches, tyres, brakes, controls and exposed wiring for damage or signs of use.
  • Ask how much fuel or charge is supplied and whether the delivery inspection has been completed. Record odometer or operating-hour readings and photograph the vehicle from all sides.

Calculate the real on-road amount

Request an itemised quotation showing the vehicle price, registration-related charges, insurance, taxes, handling or documentation fees, accessories, finance charges and every discount. Ask whether a cash price differs from a financed price and whether an exchange benefit depends on surrendering a particular vehicle. Compare the final amount with another quotation for the same variant; comparing an advertised ex-showroom figure with an on-road figure produces a false saving.

Match specifications to daily use

Use question Specification or evidence to examine
Daily distance and charging or refuelling access Engine or motor type, stated efficiency or range, tank or battery capacity, charging time and where you can refuel or charge
People and cargo Load limits, seat comfort, pillion space, footboard or luggage capacity and the cost of any necessary rack or top box
Safety Braking equipment, lamps, tyres, mirrors, restraints where fitted and the safety features listed for the exact variant
Road and weather Wheel and suspension characteristics, ground clearance, weather protection and the dealer’s explanation of limitations

Use the manufacturer’s stated figures as specifications, not as a promise of your real-world fuel economy or electric range. Your load, speed, traffic, temperature, terrain and maintenance affect results.

Read warranty and service terms before signing

Obtain the warranty period, exclusions, maintenance intervals, consumables, roadside assistance terms and claim process in writing. Check that an authorised service option is reasonably accessible from your home or work. Ask whether scheduled services must be completed at an authorised outlet and what evidence is required for a claim. Confirm who handles registration, number plates, insurance documents and any temporary-registration deadline.

New versus used two-wheelers

For a used vehicle, add a separate ownership and condition investigation: verify the seller’s title, registration certificate, identity, loan or hypothecation status, insurance, tax and transfer paperwork; inspect service records and accident or flood history; and arrange an independent mechanical inspection and test ride where lawful and safe. The sale checklist above does not establish that a used vehicle is roadworthy, free of finance or legally transferable. For a new vehicle, focus on matching the delivered identification numbers and documents to the invoice and on recording delivery condition.

Suitcase checks: capacity on paper is not usable capacity

Suitcase offers often combine a lower price with a different size, shell material or wheel design. Compare the dimensions and empty weight of the exact case, then consider the carrier and route on which you will use it. Airline or rail baggage limits are separate from the suitcase’s advertised dimensions and can change, so check the current limit for your booking rather than relying on a permanent “cabin size” label.

Measure the case and its usable space

  • Record external height, width and depth, including wheels, handles and protrusions. Compare those measurements with the planned carrier’s current cabin or checked-bag limit.
  • Check stated capacity in litres, internal compartment dimensions, divider layout, compression panels and pockets. A larger external shell may lose usable space to thick walls or wheel housings.
  • Note empty weight. A heavy case leaves less of a carrier’s weight allowance for clothing and equipment.
  • Inspect shell or fabric construction, corner protection, stitching, seams, lining and reinforcement around handles and wheels.

Operate every moving part

Roll the suitcase over a hard, flat surface. Each wheel should turn without wobble, grinding or catching, and the case should track straight when pulled. Extend and retract the telescopic handle several times; it should lock at each position without excessive play. Open and close the zippers along their entire path, including corners, and test combination locks or other locking features without forcing them. Check hinges, clips, expansion sections and internal straps. Photograph any defect before purchase or before signing for delivery.

Assess repairability and the written warranty

Ask whether replacement wheels, handles, locks or shells are available in your region, who performs repairs and whether shipping is paid by the buyer. Read the warranty duration and exclusions for airline damage, normal wear, overloading, water exposure and cosmetic marks. A warranty that excludes the parts most likely to fail may still be useful, but its limits should be reflected in your decision.

A digital luggage scale can be an optional tool for checking a packed bag at home; it is not necessary for buying a suitcase and cannot replace checking the current carrier limit. Pack a representative load and weigh it if your trips have strict allowances.

Appliance checks: model, capacity, installation and running cost

Appliances that look alike can differ in capacity, electrical requirements, programmes, included fittings and service coverage. Decide what the appliance must do first, then verify the exact model and the conditions for installation and warranty activation.

Verify the specification and what is in the box

  • Confirm model number, physical dimensions, net capacity, voltage and power requirements, colour and included accessories. Check that the room, counter, doorway and ventilation space can accommodate the unit.
  • Identify features that affect your actual use: programme or temperature controls, noise information, connectivity, water inlet or drain requirements, compatible consumables and control layout.
  • Check energy-efficiency or quality marks when they apply to that product category. Do not assume every appliance carries the same mark, and do not treat a higher label alone as proof that it suits your household.
  • Ask whether delivery includes unpacking, old-unit removal, stand or bracket, hoses, ducts, stabilisers or other installation materials. Obtain separate prices for anything excluded.

Calculate ownership cost

Compare the purchase total with likely electricity, water, fuel or consumable use and required maintenance. Use the manufacturer’s stated ratings and your expected usage rather than an optimistic demonstration setting. Include installation, voltage protection or plumbing work only when genuinely required for your location. A cheaper sale unit can cost more if it has a smaller capacity that forces extra cycles or if essential fittings are sold separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check delivery, installation and service conditions

Ask whether the warranty starts at invoice, delivery or installation, and what proof is needed to make a claim. Confirm which party handles transit damage and the deadline for reporting it. Check the authorised service network near you, response process, labour coverage, spare-part exclusions and whether unauthorised installation voids the warranty. Inspect the cabinet, door, display, controls, drum, shelves, seals, cables and accessories before the installer leaves. Do not power up a visibly damaged or wet unit until the seller gives written instructions.

New, open-box and refurbished status

Ensure the condition is stated clearly. Check seals, manufacturing or import labels, serial number, operating hours or cycle count where available, and whether the warranty is full, seller-backed or remaining manufacturer coverage. An open-box or refurbished price may be fair, but it must not be presented as a sealed new product.

Compare offers with one decision sheet

When two or more offers survive the initial checks, score them on the same five axes. Category-specific priorities change, but the evidence should be written down for each seller.

Axis Two-wheeler Suitcase Appliance
Total payable On-road amount, registration, insurance, finance and accessories Item price, delivery and any repair or replacement cost Unit, delivery, installation, fittings and removal fees
Exact item Model, variant, engine or motor and model year External dimensions, capacity, empty weight and material Model, dimensions, capacity, power and included programmes or accessories
Condition Identification numbers, mileage, damage and delivery inspection Shell or fabric, wheels, handle, zippers and packaging Seals, cabinet, controls, serial number and packaging
After-sales Warranty exclusions, service intervals and nearby authorised outlet Repairable parts, warranty exclusions and repair route Warranty activation, installation rules, service network and parts
Return or replacement Cancellation, registration and defect process before handover Time limit and exclusions for use or transit damage Deadlines for damaged delivery, installation and replacement

Choose the offer with the best fit and documented protection, not automatically the lowest number. If a seller will not provide a model number, itemised total or written policy, that missing information is itself a reason to pause.

Documents to save and what to do when something goes wrong

Create one folder for each purchase. Save the invoice or bill, payment proof, warranty or guarantee, serial or chassis-number photographs, delivery photographs, installation report, seller messages, listing screenshots and the complete offer terms. Keep records for as long as the warranty, return period or financing obligation lasts.

  1. Contact the seller through the channel named in the written policy and describe the defect or mismatch with dates and photographs.
  2. State the remedy you are requesting—repair, replacement, refund, correction of documents or cancellation—and quote the relevant policy clause.
  3. Keep proof of every call, email, chat and collection attempt. Do not dispose of packaging until the return or replacement period has ended when storage is practical.
  4. If the seller does not resolve the matter, the National Consumer Helpline lists an online portal, app, UMANG and WhatsApp routes, and helpline 1915 with published operating hours of 8am–8pm. Confirm current channels and hours on its Consumer Rights page before contacting it.
  5. For a complaint specifically about a BIS-certified product or the Standard Mark, BIS says complaints can be lodged online, through its mobile application or by email. Include the product name, type, size or grade, purchase source and date, batch number and whether the Standard Mark is present, as described on its Consumer Protection page. BIS is not a universal channel for every retail or vehicle dispute.

The Department of Consumer Affairs reported 17,71,622 grievances received by the National Consumer Helpline in 2025; 5,11,196, about 29%, related to e-commerce. This is broad grievance context, not a count of sale-related problems or proof that a particular seller or discount is misleading.

What the 2026 e-commerce rule announcement means for a sale buyer

A Press Information Bureau release dated 10 September 2026 says amendments to India’s Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules address seller and product information, sponsored listings, price reductions and dark patterns. It says platforms and marketplace sellers are to provide key details including best-before or use-before dates where relevant, returns and refunds, warranty, delivery and payment information. The release gives a commencement date of 1 January 2027. As of 13 October 2026, that date is in the future, so do not treat the amendments as rules already in force. You can still use the information categories as a practical checklist for reading a live listing. The announcement is available at PIB’s release.

Quick decision checklist
