Before buying a survival game on Steam, check what you can play now, whether its current state suits you, whether it will run on your PC, and whether its multiplayer features match your plans. Treat release status, recent reviews, system requirements, exact play modes, survival mechanics, price and refund eligibility as separate checks: the word “survival” or a multiplayer tag alone does not answer them. If you are choosing between several games, compare each one on the same points rather than letting a roadmap, review aggregate or genre label make the decision for you.
1. Find out what you can play today
Start with the Steam store page’s release status. A game may be fully released, in Early Access, or available through Advance Access; those labels describe different purchase contexts, so check what the page says rather than assuming a title is finished because it is available to buy. The key question is not only what the developer intends to add, but what you can launch and do after purchasing it.
Read the description with that distinction in mind. Look for the features and modes the game currently offers, and check whether the page separates those from planned additions. If it does not make the distinction clear, consult the developer’s answers or current official communications. Avoid treating an announced feature as part of the purchase you are making today unless the current materials confirm it is available.

For an Early Access game, evaluate the current build
Steam describes Early Access as a work in progress. Its advice is to buy only if you are excited to play the game in its current state, not solely because of features promised for later. Read the developer’s description and answers, then separate content and modes that exist now from roadmap plans. Ask whether the available loop, amount of content, and known shortcomings are worth the current price even if planned updates arrive late or change.

That means evaluating Early Access much like a game you can play now, not like a promise to deliver your ideal finished version later. Is there enough current content for the kind of sessions you want? Does the present version include the solo or multiplayer mode you need? Are bugs, performance problems or missing features noted by players acceptable to you? If the main reason you want the game is a future mode or system, wait until it is confirmed as available rather than assuming the roadmap is a delivery guarantee.
Steam says it adds a notice to an Early Access store page after more than 12 months without an update and an update-type event. That notice can help flag a long period without qualifying activity, but it is not a guarantee of development pace or a substitute for checking what has actually changed. A page without that notice does not, by itself, tell you whether updates are frequent or whether they address the issues you care about. For Advance Access, verify the specific offer
Do not assume Advance Access means the same thing as Early Access or that every game offers the same amount of content or timing. Read the title’s current store-page description for what is available, when access begins, and what the purchase includes. If those details are unclear, do not treat an expected future release as content you can play today. The label alone does not answer how much of the game is accessible or what the offer includes; verify those particulars for the title you are considering.
2. Read reviews as evidence about a changing game
Review scores summarize opinions at a point in time; they cannot guarantee that the game will run well on your computer or suit your group. Look at the overall rating and recent reviews separately. Recent feedback can better reflect the current build, while older reviews may describe a substantially different version. In a game that changes, the date and context of a review matter as much as its positive or negative verdict.
Scan for repeated, specific themes rather than relying on a single glowing or angry review. Useful signals include reports about crashes or poor performance, bugs, missing modes, shallow or repetitive content, multiplayer reliability, and changes after patches. Then compare those reports with update history and the developer’s current description. A patch may address a problem, introduce another, or leave it unresolved; check whether reviewers are discussing the same version you would buy.

Separate a complaint that is important to you from one that is not. For example, a report about a missing multiplayer mode matters if you plan to play with friends, while a criticism of a mechanic you do not intend to use may carry less weight. Look for more than one account before treating an issue as a pattern. Reviewers have different hardware, expectations and play preferences, so specific details are more useful than a score alone.
Steam’s How to Survive listing, for example, displayed 76% positive English-language reviews from 4,619 reviews in a snapshot accessed in 2026. That is a time-sensitive, game-specific illustration of the information a listing may show—not a recommendation, a measure of survival games generally, or a stable score. Check a live listing if considering that particular title. Review aggregates can change as more people post reviews, so use the current page rather than carrying a snapshot forward as a permanent fact.

3. Check whether your computer meets the game’s requirements
Open the specific game’s Steam listing and compare its minimum and recommended system requirements with your computer’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, operating system, and available storage. Check whether your OS is supported and whether the required storage fits on the drive where you plan to install the game. Do not use another game’s requirements as a proxy: survival titles can vary substantially in technical demands.
Check every listed component rather than focusing only on one headline number. A computer can appear to meet one part of the listing and still fall short elsewhere. Likewise, available storage is a practical requirement: make sure the installation will fit on the drive you intend to use. If the listing provides separate minimum and recommended specifications, note which level your PC is closer to instead of treating the two as interchangeable.
Minimum requirements are not a promise of smooth performance. Steam cautions that computers at or near the listed requirements may encounter performance or launch problems. If your PC is close to the minimum, treat that as a risk: check recent reviews from players with similar hardware, and consider whether you are willing to accept lower settings or uneven performance. Reviews from a different configuration may not predict your own results, but recurring reports about performance can help you decide what to investigate further. Requirements are title-specific, so revisit them if you are comparing games. Do not assume that a game will run because another survival title does, or because a friend’s computer handles it. The listing is the starting point; recent reports can add context, but neither a requirement label nor another player’s experience guarantees a particular result on your machine.
4. Verify the exact modes and features you need
Check the store page’s feature labels and description for the particular kind of play you intend to do. Solo, online co-op, local co-op, PvP, and PvE are not interchangeable. A game marked multiplayer may not support the way you and your friends want to play. Treat each capability as a separate question and look for confirmation on the current listing or in official game information.
- Player count: Confirm how many people can play together, and whether that number applies to a hosted session, dedicated server, or another mode. If your group has a particular size, verify the supported count rather than assuming it from the word “co-op.”
- Co-op type: Look specifically for online or local co-op. Do not assume local split-screen from the presence of co-op, or online co-op from a multiplayer label. Check the exact mode you plan to use.
- PvP and PvE: Check whether players can fight one another, cooperate against the environment, or choose between separate modes. A general multiplayer feature does not tell you which of these experiences the game offers.
- Hosting and servers: If your group expects a persistent shared world, find out whether a player must host, whether the world continues when the host is offline, and whether dedicated servers are supported. Verify the answer in the current listing or official game channels. A co-op label alone does not answer how the world is hosted or whether it persists between sessions.
- Crossplay: Confirm support for the platforms your group actually uses. A Steam listing or multiplayer label does not establish that PC players can join players on another platform. Check the current information for the specific platform combination involved.
- Controller support: Check the listing’s controller-support information if you plan to play with a controller; it is a distinct feature, not something to infer from the genre.
Steam listings can present single-player, co-op, and controller support as separate features. Use the title’s current page for its labels and seek an official developer explanation for details the labels do not settle. For example, a co-op label alone may not answer whether a shared world persists between sessions. Nor does one supported mode prove another: verify solo play, online or local co-op, player count, server arrangement, crossplay and controller support individually if they matter to your decision.
For a group purchase, check these details before everyone buys. Write down what each player needs—platform, group size, online or local play, and whether the world should remain accessible when a particular person is offline—and confirm each point. This avoids treating a general multiplayer description as proof that the exact shared experience your group expects is supported.
5. Decide whether the survival loop fits you
“Survival game” does not specify one standard set of mechanics. Read the description and watch current gameplay to see how the individual title handles the parts that matter to you. Compare games by their actual loops rather than assuming every title includes the same systems. One title may make resource management central; another may put more emphasis on exploration, combat or building.

- Death penalties: Find out what happens when a character dies. Lost equipment, a reset, or a recoverable body can make a major difference to the difficulty and group experience. If the consequences are a deal-breaker, verify them rather than guessing.
- Progression: Check how characters, equipment, and goals advance, and whether the game gives you a clear reason to keep playing. Current gameplay and reviews may help show the pace and shape of that progression.
Current reviews can help clarify how these systems feel in practice, but look for descriptions of a specific mechanic or repeated experience rather than expecting reviewers to share your preferences. If a mechanic is a deal-breaker and the listing does not explain it, treat it as unverified instead of assuming it works a particular way. A gameplay video can show what a loop looks like, but it may not answer every rule or consequence; use the current description and official information for details that are not visible.
6. Weigh the current price against the current game
Judge the price against the content and condition available now—not against the size of a roadmap or the possibility of future updates. For a released game, consider whether its current modes and loop justify the price to you. For an unfinished game, decide whether the present build is worth paying for even if development takes longer than expected or planned features change. A lower price does not make a missing mode or unsuitable mechanic a good fit; weigh the specific content you will actually use.
If you are comparing several options, compare current price with current playable content, update and review themes, technical fit, exact modes, and the survival loop. This keeps the choice grounded in your needs. One game may have the mode your group wants but a higher hardware requirement; another may run on your PC but not support the way you want to play together. There is no universal best trade-off—identify which requirements are essential and which are preferences.
Steam says its standard refund policy applies to Early Access purchases. That does not mean every purchase or playtime qualifies: read the current Steam refund terms and assess the actual conditions for your transaction before buying. Do not treat a possible refund as a substitute for checking the game beforehand.
