The right industrial steam turbine cannot be selected from a catalogue rating alone. Before requesting quotations, define the plant duty, complete steam and heat-balance cases, specify the driven load and operating profile, and set a package boundary that makes every bidder price the same scope. Then require guarantees at identical conditions, a documented standards basis, and enforceable service and performance terms.
Start with the plant duty, not a turbine model
A steam turbine is an energy-conversion element in a larger system. Its suitable size, arrangement, controls and auxiliaries depend on what the plant must accomplish:
- Power generation: convert available steam into generator output while meeting electrical interconnection and dispatch requirements.
- Mechanical drive: provide the speed and torque required by a compressor, pump, fan, boiler-feed pump or other shaft load.
- Process steam: deliver exhaust or extracted steam at a pressure, temperature, flow and reliability level that downstream users can accept.
- Combined heat and power: produce electricity while recovering useful steam or heat, with the heat balance taking priority over a nameplate power figure.
State the primary duty and any secondary duties in the request for quotation (RFQ). A turbine that is suitable for condensing power generation may be unsuitable when process-steam pressure must remain stable during electrical-load changes. Conversely, a back-pressure machine may not deliver the desired electricity when there is insufficient continuous process demand to absorb its exhaust.
Define normal, design and upset cases
Give bidders a complete operating envelope rather than one “design” point. At minimum, provide:
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful Turbo Fan:CAGIWIRU Electric Air Duster have reached speed up to 130000RPM,Can efficient remove dust and debris. With LED light and Three Adjustable Speed to meet with different cleaning tasks.
- With Attached USB C Fasting Charging cable.Charing 3 hours,Enjoy up to 240 minutes of use on the lowest setting, For third speed can use for 25mins.with four charging options to meet with your needs.
- Wide Application: attached 5 different nozzles, making it suitable for a variety of scenes, such as car, pet, pc, keyboards, and other electronic devices. It also serves for office and home clean duster.
- Handy Design & Portable:Cordless air duster electric nozzle is Light weight and small size, design and comfortable to hold and space saving, convenient to carry around. You can put it in your room or inside the car without taking up space.
- Economical &Reusable: Built durable materials with a long-lasting battery, our CAGIWIRU air duster it's a sustainable alternative to disposable air cans.
- Inlet pressure and temperature at the turbine stop valve, including normal, minimum and maximum values.
- Main-steam flow for normal, minimum, maximum, startup and shutdown conditions.
- Steam chemistry, moisture or quality limits, contaminants, and any expected carryover.
- Exhaust pressure and temperature, including the highest back pressure and condenser vacuum cases.
- Extraction or induction flows, pressure-control ranges and allowable transients.
- Ambient temperature, cooling-medium conditions and altitude where they affect performance.
- Expected pressure excursions, load steps, trips, bypass operation and restart conditions.
Identify whether each value is continuous, an occasional excursion or a short-duration design case. Require the supplier to show how valve sizing, governing, rotor stress, casing design and protection systems accommodate those cases.
Describe the driven load and operating profile
For a generator, specify required net and gross output, voltage, frequency, power factor, grid-parallel or island operation, synchronization requirements and auxiliary-load assumptions. For a mechanical drive, provide the equipment speed range, torque curve, inertia, starting method, overspeed limit, coupling arrangement and any gearbox requirements.
Include annual operating hours, expected dispatch profile, minimum stable load, turndown, number of starts, hot and cold starts, trips, coast-down events and planned outages. A unit that runs continuously at base load is evaluated differently from one that follows a variable process or electrical demand.
Choose the thermodynamic arrangement from the heat balance
Back-pressure, condensing and extraction or controlled-extraction turbines solve different plant problems. Compare them against the site heat balance, not by treating one configuration as universally more efficient.
| Arrangement | Where the steam goes | Typical reason to choose it | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back-pressure | Exhaust leaves at a useful process or header pressure. | The plant has a dependable demand for exhaust steam and can use most of the available thermal energy. | Can the process accept the full exhaust flow in every operating season? What happens to the turbine when process demand falls? |
| Condensing | Steam expands to a condenser and rejects heat to cooling water or air. | Electricity is the dominant objective, or there is insufficient process-steam demand to absorb exhaust. | What condenser pressure is achievable in summer and winter? Are cooling-water flow, air-cooler capacity, plume, noise and water limits acceptable? |
| Extraction or controlled extraction | Some steam is withdrawn at one or more controlled pressures; the remainder continues to the exhaust. | The plant needs process steam and electricity, with process pressure or flow varying over time. | What extraction range is required? How will controls prioritize process pressure, generator output and safe turbine operation? |
Check process-steam consequences
Document process-steam minimum and maximum flow, pressure-control tolerance, temperature, allowable interruption time and the consequence of a turbine trip. Include bypass stations, let-down valves, auxiliary boilers or other backup sources in the design basis. A process user may require uninterrupted steam even when the turbine is unavailable, so the RFQ should make backup philosophy and capacity explicit.
Check heat rejection and seasonal operation
For condensing or extraction-condensing service, provide condenser design pressure, normal and maximum cooling-water temperatures, flow limits, fouling assumptions, air-cooling design conditions and permitted back-pressure. Request correction curves for seasonal conditions. A quoted output at a favorable condenser pressure is not equivalent to guaranteed output at the plant’s worst summer condition.
Use published product ranges correctly
Siemens Energy’s industrial range describes machines from 2 to 250 MW for power generation and mechanical drives. Such a range demonstrates the breadth of available duties; it does not identify a suitable machine for an individual plant.

The SST-200 brochure lists 2–25 MW, inlet pressure up to 120 bar(a), inlet temperature up to 540°C and back-pressure exhaust values of 2–20 bar(a), with condensing and extraction configurations. These are manufacturer-stated product limits. They are not a project recommendation, a guaranteed operating point or evidence that every combination of pressure, temperature, flow and extraction is available. Ask for the current product issue and a project-specific guaranteed data sheet.
The brochure states: The product design closely follows API 612 requirements.
Treat that as a manufacturer description of product design. It does not establish which API 612 edition, contractual clauses, statutory pressure code, electrical code or deviations will apply to your project. Require the bidder to identify the exact edition, list every deviation and confirm jurisdiction-specific compliance.
Build an RFQ that forces comparable bids
Send every bidder the same design basis and require a compliance schedule. The following checklist covers the information that should be attached to the RFQ.
Plant and steam data
- Plant duty: generation, mechanical drive, process steam or combined heat and power.
- Steam-source description, pressure and temperature at all cases, flow range, chemistry and quality.
- Startup, shutdown, bypass, trip and transient conditions.
- Exhaust header pressure range, condenser conditions and cooling-medium limits.
- Extraction or induction locations, pressure ranges, flow-control philosophy and process reliability requirements.
- Condensate return, drains, gland-steam source and destination, and non-condensable handling.
Output and mechanical requirements
- Generator gross and net output, voltage, frequency, power factor and grid or islanding mode.
- Driven-equipment speed, torque, inertia, starting requirements, overspeed limit and coupling or gearbox data.
- Minimum stable load, turndown, load-step requirements, annual hours, starts, trips and dispatch profile.
- Required availability, planned outage windows and consequences of loss of process steam or power.
Performance requirements
- Guaranteed output at named inlet, exhaust, extraction, ambient and load conditions.
- Guaranteed steam rate or heat rate, with the reference basis and auxiliary-load treatment.
- Correction curves for pressure, temperature, flow, condenser pressure, extraction and ambient conditions.
- Permitted tolerances, degradation assumptions, test uncertainty and remedies when guarantees are missed.
- Acceptance-test code, instrumentation accuracy, test duration, stabilization criteria and data-reduction method.
Package boundary and interfaces
- Turbine, generator or driven machine, gearbox, coupling, turning gear and baseplate.
- Lubricating-oil, jacking-oil, control-oil and seal systems, including coolers, filters, tanks and redundancy.
- Governing, trip and overspeed protection, vibration monitoring, control panels, instrumentation and cybersecurity interfaces.
- Steam piping, valves, drains, gland-seal equipment, insulation and piping supports.
- Condenser, air ejectors or vacuum equipment, preheaters, feedwater interfaces and condensate equipment where applicable.
- Foundations, embedded plates, electrical switchgear, transformers, cables, plant DCS/PLC integration, installation and commissioning.
Require a battery-limit drawing, interface list, responsibility matrix and explicit exclusions. A bid that includes a turbine but excludes the condenser, controls integration or field piping is not comparable with a fully integrated package.
Make efficiency and output guarantees measurable
Product capability charts and marketing ranges are not project performance guarantees. Put the complete reference condition in the contract so that two bids cannot use different assumptions.
- Freeze the reference cases. List inlet pressure and temperature, flow, exhaust or condenser pressure, extraction flows, ambient conditions, generator or driven-load losses and auxiliary consumption.
- Define the guaranteed quantities. State whether output is gross shaft power, generator-terminal power or net plant export. Define steam rate or heat rate and identify whether oil pumps, cooling fans, vacuum equipment and other auxiliaries are included.
- Request correction curves. Require curves or equations for the variables that can change during operation, including inlet conditions, exhaust pressure, extraction flow, ambient temperature and load.
- Agree the acceptance method before award. Name the test code, instrumentation classes, calibration requirements, test duration, operating stability, permitted uncertainty and data-reduction procedure.
- Set tolerances and remedies. Specify acceptable deviation, retest rights, liquidated damages or other commercial remedies, and the treatment of degradation over the warranty period.
The available product information does not provide an independent, cross-vendor efficiency comparison. Do not infer that a broader published range, a higher nominal output or a particular configuration is more efficient for your site. Ask each bidder to calculate performance on the same heat-balance cases.
Specify the complete mechanical, electrical and control package
Many procurement disputes arise at interfaces rather than in the turbine casing. Use a scope table that assigns each item to the supplier, purchaser or a named third party.

| Scope area | Items to identify | RFQ question |
|---|---|---|
| Turbine train | Casing, rotor, valves, bearings, seals, turning gear, coupling and baseplate | What is included, and what loads and nozzle forces can the connected piping impose? |
| Generator or driven machine | Generator, compressor, pump, fan, gearbox and lubrication interfaces | Who supplies the driven equipment and guarantees its performance at the turbine shaft? |
| Oil and protection | Main and auxiliary oil pumps, coolers, filters, tanks, emergency power, trip system and overspeed protection | What redundancy, ride-through time and test provisions are included? |
| Steam and balance of plant | Inlet and exhaust piping, drains, gland steam, condenser, preheaters, vacuum equipment and condensate return | Where are the battery limits, supports, insulation and field pressure tests? |
| Controls and electrical | Local panel, turbine controller, DCS/PLC links, generator protection, synchronization, cybersecurity and network responsibilities | Which signals, protocols, cabinets, software licenses and FAT/SAT activities are included? |
| Site execution | Foundations, lifting, alignment, installation, commissioning, performance testing and operator training | What site services, cranes, temporary utilities and outage time must the purchaser provide? |
Siemens describes packages that can include a generator, oil system, piping and instrumentation and a control system, with condenser and preheating options. Confirm the exact inclusion list for your quotation rather than assuming that a package description covers every field item.

Set standards, codes and documentation explicitly
Do not rely on a general statement that a product references DIN or API standards. The RFQ should name the standards and editions that apply to the project, subject to confirmation by the owner’s engineer and the jurisdictional authority.
- Rotating-equipment standard and exact edition, including all agreed deviations.
- Pressure-equipment, piping, welding, materials and inspection codes.
- Electrical, generator, earthing, hazardous-area and grid-interconnection requirements where relevant.
- Noise, emissions, environmental and cooling-system requirements.
- Factory acceptance, site acceptance, vibration, balancing, overspeed and performance-test requirements.
- Required drawings, calculations, certificates, material traceability, inspection and test plans, manuals, spare-parts lists and software documentation.
Ask for a clause-by-clause compliance matrix. Any “compliant except” entry should identify the clause, technical effect, proposed alternative and commercial impact.
Evaluate lifecycle support before signing
A turbine purchase commits the plant to a maintenance and parts relationship that can last decades. Evaluate support as a scored, contractual requirement rather than a marketing statement.
Service coverage and response
- Location of field-service personnel and authorized repair facilities.
- Guaranteed response time for a trip, vibration alarm, oil-system failure or process-steam problem.
- Availability of remote diagnostics, data ownership, cybersecurity controls and communications requirements.
- Planned outage engineering, field balancing, borescope inspection and emergency repair capability.
Overhauls, parts and obsolescence
- Recommended inspection and overhaul intervals, with the operating assumptions behind them.
- Scope of a minor inspection, major overhaul and rotor or casing repair.
- Lead times and pricing basis for critical spares, consumables, valves, bearings, seals and control hardware.
- Obsolescence policy for controllers, sensors, drives and software, including migration paths and notice periods.
- Modernization, upgrade and efficiency-improvement options for the installed fleet.
Siemens states that overhaul scope is considered using plant observations, operating behavior and equivalent operating hours, and lists maintenance, modernization, upgrades and spare parts among its services. Obtain project-specific commitments for your machine, including response times, deliverables and prices; do not infer enforceable service levels from a general service page.

Ask bidders to separate one-time and recurring costs and to identify assumptions that could change the final price.
- Equipment, engineering, documentation, testing, packing and transport.
- Installation supervision, commissioning, training, site testing and travel.
- Foundations, cranes, temporary utilities, electrical work, piping, insulation and civil works excluded from the package.
- Taxes, duties, escalation, currency exposure, payment milestones and validity period.
- Warranty duration, availability commitments, performance remedies and delay damages.
- Planned maintenance, spare parts, outage labor, software support and modernization over the buyer’s chosen evaluation horizon.
Use a common commercial form and require an exclusions schedule. A lower equipment price can be outweighed by a larger balance-of-plant scope, higher auxiliary consumption, difficult cooling requirements or weak outage support.

A defensible procurement sequence
- Complete the heat-balance study. Model steam sources, process users, electrical demand, cooling limits, condensate return and seasonal cases.
- Freeze the duty statement. Define generation, drive, process steam or CHP duty and document normal, minimum, maximum, startup, shutdown and transient operation.
- Issue a uniform RFQ. Include performance cases, package boundary, standards matrix, documentation list, schedule and commercial form.
- Hold a technical clarification round. Resolve missing data, contradictory limits, extraction-control philosophy, trip consequences and site interfaces before bid normalization.
- Normalize quotations. Recalculate output, steam rate, auxiliaries, cooling demand, exclusions, schedule and lifecycle assumptions on the same basis.
- Audit guarantees and risks. Check test methods, correction curves, tolerances, remedies, warranty terms and evidence of service capability.
- Complete engineering and jurisdictional review. Confirm pressure, electrical, hazardous-area and environmental requirements with qualified professionals and authorities.
- Place the order with a controlled design basis. Make deviations, data-submittal dates, inspection points, factory and site tests, training and commissioning obligations contractual.
Common buying mistakes and how to prevent them
Choosing by megawatts alone
Failure: A turbine is selected because its nameplate output appears to match the plant.
Prevention: Evaluate output, steam consumption, extraction capability, exhaust conditions, auxiliary load and load-following behavior at every required operating case.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming a published limit is a guaranteed duty
Failure: A catalogue pressure, temperature or power range is copied into the purchase specification as if it were a guaranteed operating point.
Prevention: Request a project-specific data sheet with guaranteed values, correction curves, allowable transients and stated exclusions.
Leaving the condenser and controls outside the comparison
Failure: Turbine prices are compared while one bidder includes vacuum equipment and DCS integration and another excludes them.
Prevention: Use a battery-limit drawing, responsibility matrix and line-by-line inclusions and exclusions schedule.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Using different test bases
Failure: One bidder guarantees gross generator output at a favorable condenser pressure while another quotes net output at a harsher condition.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Prevention: Mandate one reference condition, one test code, one uncertainty treatment and one definition of net output.
Ignoring process-steam reliability
Failure: A turbine trip interrupts a critical process because no bypass or backup source was specified.
Prevention: State allowable interruption time, provide bypass or backup capacity where required, and test the trip and changeover sequence in commissioning.
Buying without a service plan
Failure: The plant discovers long spare-part lead times or obsolete controls after the first forced outage.
Prevention: Contract response times, critical-spares lists, overhaul scope, obsolescence notices, training and modernization paths before award.
What the final bid package should contain
Before commercial evaluation, each compliant quotation should let the team answer these questions without assumptions:
- Does the proposed arrangement satisfy the complete plant heat balance in normal and upset cases?
- Are output, steam rate or heat rate, extraction performance and condenser conditions guaranteed on the same basis?
- Is every turbine-train, balance-of-plant, electrical, control and site-execution item assigned to a responsible party?
- Are applicable codes, editions, deviations, certificates and test procedures explicit?
- Can the supplier support the machine locally or within the agreed response time throughout its planned life?
- Are exclusions, escalation, schedule obligations, performance remedies and lifecycle costs visible in the commercial comparison?
If any answer depends on an unstated assumption, the RFQ is not ready for final selection. Obtain the heat-balance study and qualified engineering review first; the specific turbine size, configuration, standards basis and economics remain project decisions until those inputs are fixed.
