Before buying a Steam Machine, verify four things in this order: the individual games you plan to play, the internal capacity you need, the expansion and upgrade path you can actually use, and whether its video, network, USB and controller connections fit your room. Steam Machine runs SteamOS, so a game being listed on Steam does not automatically guarantee the same experience on this Linux-based device. Valve lists identical processor and graphics specifications for the 512GB and 2TB versions, making storage capacity—not a documented performance difference—the central configuration choice.
Start with the games you actually intend to play
Steam Machine compatibility is a title-by-title decision. Valve recommends that developers target Steam Deck compatibility as the best way to help their games work on Steam Machine, but that guidance is not a blanket promise that every Steam title will run. Steam Machine uses SteamOS, and Proton runs many Windows games on Linux-based Steam hardware.
Use Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review for device-specific compatibility context, then check the store and community information for each game in your intended library. A game that starts successfully may still have issues with its launcher, anti-cheat system, video playback, controller layout, or a particular graphics setting. Treat the compatibility label and the developer’s current notes as evidence for that game, not as a prediction for another title from the same publisher.

A practical pre-purchase game audit
- Write down the games you expect to install first. Include multiplayer games, older Windows-only releases, games with separate launchers, and anything you plan to use with a television and controller.
- Check each title’s compatibility information. Valve’s Steam Machine documentation explains the platform and developer-targeting guidance. The compatibility review provides device-specific context.
- Look for the issues that matter to your use. Confirm that the game reaches the main menu, accepts your preferred controller, and supports the display mode you expect. A compatibility indication is not an independent frame-rate benchmark.
- Check online requirements separately. If a game depends on an anti-cheat service or a third-party launcher, read the current developer notes before assuming it will work in SteamOS.
- Recheck close to purchase and again after major updates. Valve notes that software compatibility and product information can change, so use the current Steam and Valve pages rather than an old list copied elsewhere.
This process is especially important if your library contains competitive multiplayer games, specialist simulators, or titles released primarily for Windows. Conversely, a game that has a clear Steam Deck compatibility result and straightforward controller support is a more defensible choice for a living-room Steam Machine, although the final decision still belongs to the individual title.

Understand what the hardware specification does—and does not—tell you
Valve describes Steam Machine as a compact SteamOS gaming PC and publishes the following specifications on its Steam Machine product page:
| Component or connection | Valve-listed detail | What a buyer should infer |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Semi-custom AMD Zen 4, 6 cores/12 threads | The two listed storage configurations use the same published processor specification. |
| Graphics | AMD RDNA 3, 28 compute units | The 512GB and 2TB options have the same published graphics specification. |
| System memory | 16GB DDR5 | Memory capacity is not listed as a configuration choice. |
| Graphics memory | 8GB GDDR6 VRAM | VRAM is listed separately from system memory. |
| Internal storage | 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD | Capacity is the documented difference between the two configurations; usable space will be lower after system software and formatting. |
| Operating system | SteamOS | Game compatibility depends on SteamOS, Proton and each game’s software support. |
These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent benchmark results. Valve marks the specifications as subject to change before availability. Do not turn the CPU, GPU or memory figures into a promised frame rate, resolution, or quality preset without a current game-specific test.
Pick 512GB or 2TB by calculating your installed library
Valve lists two internal NVMe SSD capacities: 512GB and 2TB. Because the published CPU and GPU specifications are the same for both, the storage decision should be based on how many games you want installed at once, how often you want to remove and redownload them, and whether a microSD card suits the games you play.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Configuration | Best fit | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| 512GB NVMe SSD | Players with a small rotating library who are comfortable uninstalling completed games or using supported microSD expansion. | Large modern games and updates can consume the available space quickly. The capacity printed on the box is not the free space available to games. |
| 2TB NVMe SSD | Players who want a large collection installed internally, share the machine, or want fewer download and uninstall cycles. | Confirm the price in your country and at the time you order; the reviewed Valve page does not establish a stable regional price. |
Use a simple capacity worksheet
- List every game you want available without redownloading.
- Record the current installation requirement shown by Steam for each title, including any optional high-resolution or language packages you intend to use.
- Add the figures and compare that total with the chosen SSD capacity. Leave room for SteamOS, shader caches, downloadable updates, screenshots and other data rather than planning to fill the drive completely.
- Separate games that can live on a microSD card from games for which you prefer the internal SSD. This gives you a realistic internal-space target instead of relying on the nominal 512GB or 2TB label.
Do not assume that moving a game to removable storage changes its compatibility. Storage location and software support are separate checks. A title still needs to work with SteamOS and Proton, and its loading behavior may differ depending on the storage device and game.
Use microSD as the documented expansion route
Valve’s Steam Machine Feature & Troubleshooting guide documents microSD expansion. It supports UHS-I cards rated class 3 or better. The card must be formatted through Steam Machine’s storage settings before use.

Set up a new card
- Insert a compatible UHS-I, class 3 or better microSD card into the Steam Machine.
- Open the SteamOS storage settings and select the card when it appears.
- Choose the format option shown by SteamOS and confirm that you understand formatting erases the card’s existing contents.
- After formatting completes, set the card as an install location or move compatible games to it using Steam’s storage-management controls.
A microSD card previously used for Steam Deck library storage should work without additional steps, according to Valve. That statement does not mean every card or every existing file layout is interchangeable; use the card only after SteamOS recognizes it and shows it as available storage.
Valve specifies UHS-I support and does not claim that a higher UHS-II or UHS-III transfer rate is supported. Buying a card on the basis of an unlisted bus mode therefore adds uncertainty rather than a documented benefit. Check the card’s class rating and the current Valve guidance before purchase.
Do not assume an internal SSD replacement is a supported upgrade
Valve documents the two factory SSD capacities and microSD expansion, but the reviewed support material does not provide a complete end-user internal SSD replacement procedure or confirm compatibility requirements for replacement modules. That means an internal drive swap should not be treated as a guaranteed, routine upgrade.
Valve also warns that it is not responsible for replacing or servicing screws or other components damaged while opening or modifying the Steam Machine. Opening the enclosure can create physical damage and support complications even if the replacement drive itself is electrically suitable.
Use this upgrade decision rule
- Need more space now: choose the 2TB factory configuration if its current regional price fits your budget, or use a documented UHS-I microSD expansion.
- Considering an SSD swap later: wait for current Valve instructions that specify the procedure, module requirements and service implications. Do not buy a replacement drive on the assumption that a generic NVMe module is approved.
- Want to modify the machine anyway: back up your data, understand that you may damage screws or other components, and accept that Valve’s stated service caveat applies.
This is a limitation of what Valve currently documents, not a claim that an internal replacement is technically impossible. Until official guidance establishes the process, microSD is the verified, lower-risk expansion path.

Match display outputs to your TV or monitor
Steam Machine includes HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. Valve lists output modes up to 4K or higher depending on the connection, but the Steam Machine troubleshooting guide says 1080p is the default gaming resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing.
Those statements describe output capability and a testing baseline, not a promise that every game will render at 4K with the same settings or performance as at 1080p. Before buying, check which input your display has, whether you need an adapter, and whether your receiver or capture device passes the signal you intend to use.
Display checklist
- Identify whether the television or monitor accepts HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, or both.
- Plan the cable path and any adapter before installing the machine in a cabinet or behind a television.
- Use 1080p as the safe starting point for gaming because that is Valve’s default and Verified-test resolution.
- Treat 4K or higher output as a connection capability. Confirm the target game’s own resolution and performance behavior rather than inferring it from the port specification.
Count every physical port before choosing a setup
The product and support pages list these wired and wireless connections:
| Connection | Location or standard | Planning question |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI 2.0 | Does it match the display or receiver input you will use? |
| DisplayPort | DisplayPort 1.4 | Would this be the better direct connection for your monitor? |
| Ethernet | Gigabit Ethernet | Can you run a network cable, or will Wi-Fi be your practical route? |
| Front USB | USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports | Are these convenient for frequently connected controllers or drives? |
| Rear USB-A | USB-A 2.0 ports | Will permanent accessories occupy these ports? |
| Rear USB-C | USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 | Does a USB-C accessory require a particular cable or adapter? |
| Wireless networking | Wi-Fi 6E | Does your network equipment support the band and location where the machine will sit? |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.3 | Are your wireless controller, keyboard or audio devices compatible? |
Count the accessories that will remain connected: controller receivers, keyboard, mouse, external storage, a headset adapter and any service or diagnostic device. A USB hub is conditional rather than mandatory because the machine already has several USB ports. If you do use a hub, keep critical troubleshooting simple: Valve advises trying a different USB port and connecting a device directly when diagnosing USB problems.
Plan controller, keyboard and mouse use
Valve says the Steam Machine has its wireless adapter built in, so a Steam Controller pairs directly without its separate puck. That is useful for couch play because the pairing path does not require occupying a USB port with an adapter.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Desktop Mode can be navigated with a keyboard and mouse or with the Steam Controller, according to Valve’s troubleshooting guide. A keyboard and mouse are therefore practical for setup, file management and applications that were designed around a pointer, but they are not required as a permanent gaming purchase if your library is controller-friendly.
Peripheral compatibility checks
- Confirm whether your preferred controller connects by Bluetooth, USB, or a dedicated receiver.
- Reserve a front USB-A port for an accessory you frequently unplug; use rear ports for devices that can remain connected.
- If a USB device is intermittent, move it to another port and test it directly on the Steam Machine before adding a hub.
- For Desktop Mode, keep a keyboard and mouse available even if you normally play from the sofa with a controller.
- Check wireless range and line-of-sight in the room rather than assuming a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi specification guarantees performance through walls or cabinets.
Network and streaming considerations
Steam Machine includes Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E. Use Ethernet when a stable wired connection is practical; use Wi-Fi when the room layout makes cabling difficult and your network equipment provides a suitable connection. The port and wireless labels describe interfaces, not the speed you will receive through a particular router, cable run, internet plan or congested radio environment.
Valve describes Steam Machine as a streaming host to Steam and Steam Link devices. That is a platform capability, not evidence that you need a third-party subscription to use the machine. Decide whether you intend to install games locally, stream from another computer, or host streams for another device, and then check the network path for that use.

Choosing 512GB because the printed number looks large
The nominal capacity is not all available to games. Add your intended installations, updates and system overhead before deciding, then use microSD expansion if that matches your library and budget.
Buying an SSD replacement as a guaranteed future upgrade
Valve has not supplied a complete end-user replacement procedure in the reviewed material and warns about damage caused by opening or modifying the machine. Treat microSD as the documented expansion path until official instructions say otherwise.
Reading “4K output” as a 4K-performance promise
Output modes and game rendering performance are different questions. Valve identifies 1080p as the default gaming and Verified-testing resolution; evaluate each game’s settings and behavior separately.
