Before buying a Soulslike, verify six things on the exact product page: whether your PC meets that game’s own requirements, which console generations and save transfers it supports, what the selected edition actually includes, whether it has solo, co-op or PvP modes, which controls and accessibility settings are available, and what refund rules apply to your store and region. These checks prevent the most expensive mistakes: a game that runs poorly, an expansion bundle without the base game, a purchase that cannot follow your save to a newer console, or a supposedly co-op title that is single-player only.
Start with the exact game, platform and edition
Soulslike is a design category, not a technical standard. Two games in the genre can have completely different hardware requirements, multiplayer systems, accessibility options and purchase terms. Start by writing down the exact title, platform, storefront and edition you intend to buy. A PC copy from one storefront, a PlayStation purchase and an Xbox purchase can expose you to different system requirements, save behavior and refund processes.
- Game and version: Record the full title, including a definitive, deluxe or expansion bundle name.
- Platform: Identify the operating system and storefront on PC, or the exact console generation on PlayStation or Xbox.
- Edition contents: Open the included-content list rather than relying on the bundle name.
- Play mode: Confirm whether the game is single-player, online co-op, PvP, or a combination.
- Save plan: Check whether saves move between generations or remain tied to one platform.
- Return option: Read the policy for the store where you will actually make the purchase.
Store listings and support pages can change. Verify these details immediately before payment, especially when a game has recently received an expansion, a console port or a platform update.
Check PC requirements against your actual hardware
Use the requirements for the exact title and storefront. Compare the listed operating system, processor, memory, graphics card, graphics API and free storage with your computer. A minimum specification is a compatibility floor supplied by the publisher or store; it is not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or stable performance. If your system only reaches the minimum, leave headroom for the operating system, drivers and background applications.

Example: Elden Ring on Steam
Steam’s current Elden Ring listing, accessed in 2026, gives separate minimum and recommended configurations. The figures below are Steam’s published specifications for that game, not a genre-wide threshold.

The same Steam listing specifies DirectX 12 for the minimum configuration. Storage means free space available at installation; plan additional room for patches and temporary installation files even when the listing only states the game’s requirement.
How to compare a Windows PC
- Identify your components. In Windows, open Settings, choose System, then About to see the processor and installed RAM. Open Task Manager and select Performance to identify the GPU. Confirm the exact model, not only the manufacturer.
- Check the operating system. Compare your Windows version with the listing. A 64-bit edition and current graphics drivers are normally necessary for modern releases, but use the title’s own support page for any additional requirement.
- Compare the processor. Match the model family and generation to the listed Intel or AMD part. A newer processor is not automatically equivalent in every workload, so search the manufacturer specifications if your model is not named.
- Compare graphics memory and capability. Check both the GPU model and dedicated video memory. A card with less VRAM than the minimum can fail to load required assets or force severe texture reductions even when its general performance appears similar.
- Check free storage. In File Explorer, right-click the target drive and choose Properties. Keep more free space than the listed install size so the launcher can unpack files and apply updates.
- Check the graphics API. Elden Ring’s listing requires DirectX 12. If a title lists a specific API, verify that your GPU and Windows installation support it before buying.
- Plan for performance uncertainty. Requirements do not state a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or frame-time stability. Reviews and technical support reports may reveal issues, but do not treat another player’s result as a guarantee for your hardware.
When your PC is close to the minimum
Being just above minimum can still produce an unsatisfactory experience. Soulslike combat depends on readable animations and responsive timing, so unstable frame pacing may matter more than an average frame-rate number. Consider waiting until you can test the game under the store’s return rules, or use a platform whose hardware is officially supported. Do not buy based solely on a benchmark for a different game: engines, patches and areas with heavy effects can behave differently.
Confirm console generations and save behavior
A console product page answers two separate questions: whether the game runs on your console and whether your progress can move between generations. Never infer one from the other.

Lies of P as a platform example
NEOWIZ’s official support information states that the PlayStation purchase supports both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, but saved data cannot be transferred between those two versions. The Xbox purchase supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with saved data syncing across Xbox platforms. This is a title-specific arrangement, not a rule for Soulslikes generally.

Before buying another title, open its support FAQ and product page and look for explicit language such as cross-generation save, cloud synchronization, upgrade entitlement or separate versions. A game may support both generations while still treating saves as separate, or it may require you to download the correct version for your console.
Questions to answer before a console purchase
- Is the product a native current-generation version, a backward-compatible last-generation version, or both?
- Does one purchase grant access to both versions, or are they sold separately?
- Can a save move from the older version to the newer version, and can it move back?
- Does cloud saving require a subscription or a specific account?
- Are online features available on the console generation you own?
- Will an expansion be usable on both versions, or only on one?
Use the console maker’s live product page and the game publisher’s support documentation for these answers. Do not rely on a retailer’s short title, a box image or a friend’s experience with a different region.

Read exactly what the edition includes
Edition names are marketing labels; the included-content panel is the contractual description. Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring product information lists PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S versions, with choices that include the base game and editions associated with the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. The important check is whether the selected line explicitly includes the base game.

Use this edition checklist
- Open the edition’s full description on the platform where you will buy it.
- Look for a line that names the base game. An expansion bundle title alone does not prove that the original game is included.
- List every included item: expansion, soundtrack, art book, gesture, cosmetic item or upgrade entitlement.
- Check whether the listed content is digital, physical, consumable or restricted to one account.
- Confirm that the content matches your platform and region. A code or add-on can have separate redemption limits.
- Compare the price with buying the base game and expansion separately, but use the store’s current prices rather than an old recommendation.
If you already own the base game, choose an expansion-only product when the store clearly identifies it as such. If you do not own it, select a bundle whose contents explicitly name both the base game and the expansion.
Verify solo, co-op and PvP modes
Do not assume that a Soulslike includes the multiplayer design you expect. Lies of P’s official support describes it as single-player with no multiplayer functions. By contrast, Steam’s Elden Ring listing identifies online co-op and PvP. These examples show why the game’s own feature list matters.
Match the mode to your use case
- Solo only: Confirm that the campaign, progression and bosses are designed to be completed without online partners if that is your preference.
- Co-op: Check whether online co-op is available, how many players can join, whether assistance is limited to certain areas, and whether both players need the same expansion.
- PvP: Look for an explicit competitive mode. A game can have co-op without player-versus-player combat, or vice versa.
- Online requirements: Confirm account, subscription, network and regional requirements on your platform. A listing that says online features exist may not explain every access condition.
- Local play: Do not confuse online multiplayer with local split-screen or couch co-op; verify local support separately.
Multiplayer rules can also affect progression. Check whether guest players keep loot or story progress, whether matchmaking is level-limited, and whether a disconnected host ends the session. If the store page does not answer a detail that matters to you, consult the publisher’s support FAQ before purchase rather than assuming genre conventions apply.

Check controls and accessibility for the specific game
Accessibility and control features vary by title. The available information does not establish a reliable cross-title comparison, so do not assume that every Soulslike offers a selectable difficulty level, extensive remapping, color filters, subtitle controls or assist features.

Settings worth verifying
- Full controller remapping and separate keyboard-and-mouse bindings
- Left-handed or alternate-stick layouts
- Camera sensitivity, aim or lock-on options, and motion-blur controls
- Subtitle size, speaker labels, contrast and language choices
- Color-blind filters, UI scaling and high-contrast modes
- Vibration intensity, trigger effects and motion controls
- Difficulty choices, assist modes or ways to reduce repeated encounters
Look for a current settings guide, accessibility statement or manual for the exact game and platform. A feature documented for PC may not exist on console, and a patch can add or remove an option. If a particular control or visual setting is essential, treat confirmation from the publisher as a purchase requirement.
Understand the refund policy before you launch
Refund rules belong to the store, not to the Soulslike genre. Valve’s Steam Support instructions state that a refund request normally qualifies when submitted within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. A request outside those conditions can still be submitted for review, but approval is not guaranteed. Country-specific consumer rights may provide additional protections.
Protect your Steam refund window
- Buy through the Steam account that will own and play the game.
- Record the purchase date and keep the receipt email.
- Install the game and test the title on the hardware and display you actually plan to use.
- Check launch, input, save, network and performance behavior without intentionally running up playtime.
- If it fails your requirements, submit the refund request through Steam Support before the 14-day or two-hour limit whenever possible.
The two-hour figure is recorded playtime, not a promise that every technical problem will be resolved inside that period. Long shader compilation, troubleshooting, menus and repeated launches can consume the allowance. Do not assume that console stores use the same conditions: read the policy for PlayStation, Xbox or another storefront, including regional exceptions and pre-order rules.
Compare candidate games with a decision matrix
When choosing between two or more Soulslikes, compare the same factors side by side instead of ranking them by reputation. The following matrix keeps the decision tied to your requirements.

Give each axis a pass or fail based on your own priorities. A game that fails a non-negotiable requirement, such as no multiplayer or no save transfer, should be removed from consideration even if it performs well on every other axis.
A pre-purchase workflow that takes minutes
- Open the first-party product page. Use the publisher or platform listing for the exact edition and platform.
- Copy the requirements. For PC, record every minimum and recommended component. For console, record supported generations and version names.
- Inspect your hardware or console. Confirm exact models, RAM, storage space and operating-system version.
- Read included content. Verify the base game and every expansion you expect to receive.
- Confirm modes. Find explicit wording for solo, co-op, PvP and local play.
- Check save behavior. Look for cross-generation transfer and cloud synchronization details.
- Review settings. Verify accessibility and control features that are essential to you.
- Read the store policy. Note refund timing, playtime limits, regional terms and account requirements.
- Save evidence. Keep the receipt and, when the information is important, save a copy of the product description or support answer because listings can change.
What to do when something does not match
Your PC meets minimum requirements but the game performs badly
Minimum specifications do not guarantee smooth performance. Update the operating system and graphics driver, close background applications, verify the game files and test lower resolution or graphics settings. If the title remains unusable, stop testing before exhausting the store’s refund allowance and submit a request under the applicable policy.
The store shows a bundle but the base game is unclear
Do not infer inclusion from words such as complete, expansion or bundle. Open the full contents list. If it names only downloadable content, contact store support or choose a listing that explicitly names the base game.

Check whether the publisher treats the two versions as separate products. Confirm that you are signed into the same account, that cloud synchronization has completed and that you installed the correct version. If official support says transfer is unavailable, a reinstall or local troubleshooting cannot create a supported migration path.
A friend cannot join your session
Verify that the title actually offers online co-op, that both players use compatible platforms and versions, that required subscriptions or accounts are active, and that the expansion requirement is satisfied. A single-player game cannot be made multiplayer through a setting or accessory.
Use the Elden Ring and Lies of P examples correctly
Elden Ring demonstrates how to read a detailed PC requirement list and how an expansion-related edition can require careful content checking. Lies of P demonstrates that platform support and save transfer can diverge, and that a prominent Soulslike may be single-player only. Neither example sets a universal minimum PC specification, a standard console performance target or a genre-wide accessibility baseline.
Apply the same questions to any other candidate: use its current first-party listing, compare its requirements with your actual system, inspect the selected edition, confirm modes and saves, and read the store policy that governs your purchase. This method remains useful even when a game receives patches, launches on another console generation or changes its edition lineup.
