A shrink-wrapped box is not proof that a vintage video game is factory-sealed, complete, or worth the asking price. Before paying, identify the exact release, compare its seam pattern with known copies, inspect the cardboard for opening evidence, verify that the box and contents belong together, and document the seller’s history and return terms. Treat every visual checklist as risk reduction rather than certainty: even an authentic-looking seal does not prove the original contents are still inside.
Start by identifying the exact release
You cannot judge whether a seal looks right until you know which game you are examining. Sealing methods changed by publisher, console, production period, region, and packaging variant. A seam that is normal for one release may be suspicious on another.
Record the release identity
- Platform: Record the console or handheld, such as NES or Game Boy.
- Region: Separate North American, European, Japanese, and other regional packaging; artwork, ratings marks, language, and box construction can differ.
- Edition: Note whether it is a standard retail edition, special edition, bundle, re-release, or other documented version.
- Variant markings: Record catalog numbers, barcodes, copyright lines, ratings symbols, publisher logos, and other release-specific printing.
- Box format: Look for documented differences such as a hangtab box or another package style.
PSA’s collecting guidance notes that versions can have different components and that a variant can affect rarity, desirability, and value. Compare your copy with well-documented examples of the same platform, region, edition, and variant—not merely with another game for the same console.

Build a reference set before you buy
Use several clearly photographed, trusted examples of the same release to establish what the original box, printing, folds, label placement, and seal normally look like. One comparison copy can itself be altered, so look for recurring details across multiple examples. Make notes rather than relying on memory: seam position, overlap direction, corner folds, vent holes if present, and the way the plastic gathers at each corner.

Examine the seal pattern and wrapping
Inspect the entire wrap, not just the front panel. Photograph or request sharp images of every seam, each corner, and the top and bottom edges. The important questions are where the seam runs, how layers overlap, whether the folds are consistent, and how the seams meet at corners.
Seal types you may encounter
CGC Video Games describes several seal categories, including glued, H-Overlap, H-Seam, LRB, and LRT. These labels are useful descriptions from CGC’s grading system, not a universal identification key for every game. CGC specifically notes that H-Seam seals were used for the NES and Game Boy libraries. Confirm the expected style for your exact release before treating a different pattern as suspicious.

Do not assume every game was shrink-wrapped
Some games were not sealed with plastic wrap at all. A seller’s statement that a title was “always shrink-wrapped” is therefore something to verify against release-specific evidence. Conversely, plastic that looks old or tight is not automatically original; a later wrap can age, crease, or gather in a convincing way.
Look at the corners and overlaps
- Check whether the overlap is in the expected place and direction on every side.
- Compare the width and straightness of the seam with known copies.
- Inspect how the plastic folds into each corner; abrupt, bulky, or inconsistent folds deserve closer scrutiny.
- Look for a second seam that does not match the expected factory layout.
- Check for stretching, cloudiness, heat distortion, unusual gloss, or plastic that is dramatically tighter or looser than reference examples.
These signs are clues, not verdicts. CGC cautions that a third-party-looking seam can be a warning sign while acknowledging that some such seals may be original.

Inspect the box for evidence that it was opened
The cardboard often reveals handling that the outer plastic hides. Ask for unedited, well-lit photographs of the full front, back, top, bottom, and all four corners, plus close-ups of the opening flaps and every seam.
Check the flap edges and opening area
Look for a thin color break along the flap edge or on the cardboard immediately beside the opening. CGC describes a color break along the flaps as strong evidence that the box was opened and used. A broken ink layer, exposed lighter cardboard, rubbed edge, or slight whitening can indicate that the flap was flexed before the current wrap was applied.
Check the rest of the box condition
- Corners: Look for crushing, compression, splits, or repaired cuts.
- Edges: Inspect for fraying, whitening, dents, and abrasion beneath the plastic.
- Faces: Check for fading, scratches, pressure marks, moisture rippling, and uneven gloss.
- Stickers and residue: Note price stickers, removed labels, adhesive residue, or marks that suggest prior retail handling.
- Plastic contact: Determine whether dents or tears continue through the wrap or stop at the cardboard.
Ask the seller to rotate the item under light rather than supplying only a front-facing promotional image. Missing views are a reason to pause, not an invitation to assume the hidden sides are clean.

How to distinguish an original seal from a reseal
A game can look sealed and still have been opened and rewrapped. CGC explains that manufacturers and distributors sometimes resealed items before retail sale, while retail reseals of used or returned games are considered non-authentic for its certification purposes. That distinction means “resealed” is not always synonymous with “counterfeit,” but it is highly relevant if you are buying an item represented as an original retail seal.

Use a whole-evidence assessment
- Compare the seam layout with several known copies of the same release.
- Check the flap edges and cardboard for color breaks or other opening evidence.
- Look for a third-party seam pattern, while allowing for the possibility that some unusual seams may be original.
- Compare the plastic’s folds, tension, and corner work across all sides.
- Reconcile the box’s printing and variant details with the claimed release.
- Ask the seller directly whether the item was ever opened, repaired, or resealed, then seek evidence that can be checked independently.
CGC Video Games states: "One way to authenticate an original seal is to compare the seal to other known copies of your game." That comparison is a method of reducing uncertainty, not a guarantee from photographs alone.
Confirm that the box, game, and packaging belong together
A genuine-looking box can be paired with the wrong cartridge, disc, insert, or regional release. Confirm variant-specific markings on the exterior and, where photographs permit, the identifying details of the contents. PSA notes that components can change between versions, so matching the title alone is insufficient.
For a loose or ungraded item
- Match the box’s region and edition markings to the game’s label and reported release.
- Check that the publisher, catalog, and copyright details are consistent.
- Ask whether the seller knows the item’s original source or whether parts were assembled from different copies.
- Request photographs of any visible inserts, manuals, registration cards, or other components without opening the package yourself.
For a graded item
Use the grading company’s official certification lookup. CGC’s certification page allows you to confirm the certified game’s description and grade. Compare that record with the physical item, label, certification number, variant description, and seller photographs. A matching number is a useful lookup route, not a reason to skip inspection: labels can be misrepresented, swapped, or attached to an item that is not the one pictured.
Ask the seller for history and transaction protections
Provenance can help explain an unusual seal, but a story is not authentication. Request a direct written answer to each of these questions:

- Where and when was the game purchased?
- Has the box ever been opened, repaired, cleaned, or resealed?
- How was it stored, and was it exposed to heat, sunlight, moisture, smoke, or pressure?
- Are the photographs of the exact item being sold?
- What is the return period if an independent inspection finds a problem?
- Will the seller provide additional seam and corner photographs before payment?
Look for answers that are specific and internally consistent. “Factory sealed” is a claim to verify, not a substitute for evidence. Use payment and return protections appropriate to the transaction; there is no single universal marketplace policy that covers every sale.
Compare copies using the same decision criteria
When two or more copies are available, compare them on identical axes. Do not let a high numerical grade or an attractive front photograph conceal a weaker seal or an uncertain variant.

Condition and variants influence collecting assessment, but there is no dependable universal premium for every sealed or graded game. Avoid investment or resale-return assumptions unless you have title-specific, dated sales evidence. A more expensive copy is not automatically safer if its photos are incomplete or its history is vague.

Third-party authentication and grading can be sensible when the item’s value, uncertainty, or transaction risk justifies the fee. It remains optional: submission does not guarantee authenticity, a particular grade, a sale price, or a return.

What a grading service may report
PSA describes a numerical game grade and a separate letter seal grade. CGC likewise publishes distinct game and seal grading information. Read those as separate judgments. A strong box grade does not erase a questionable seal, and an attractive seal grade does not prove that the original contents are present.
CGC lists counterfeit, reseal, and questionable-authenticity outcomes among reasons an item may be rejected. Review the service’s current terms before submitting, including what happens to rejected items and which fees remain payable.

A practical buying workflow
- Write down the identity. Record platform, region, edition, variant markings, and box format before viewing the seal.
- Gather references. Find multiple well-documented examples of the same release and note their seam layouts and box details.
- Request complete images. Obtain front, back, top, bottom, all corners, flap areas, and close-ups of every seam.
- Inspect opening evidence. Look for flap color breaks, damaged ink, crushing, residue, fading, and other handling marks.
- Assess the wrap. Compare overlap, folds, tension, corner joins, and any extra or third-party-looking seams.
- Match the package. Verify that the box, game, region, edition, and visible components are consistent.
- Check certification. For graded items, use the official certification lookup and compare its description and grade with the physical item.
- Document the seller’s answers. Ask about opening, resealing, repairs, storage, provenance, and returns.
- Choose your risk level. If evidence conflicts or key photographs are withheld, walk away or make the purchase only with protections that let you obtain an independent opinion.
- Consider grading after purchase. Use a paid assessment only when its cost and limitations make sense for the item’s value and uncertainty.
How to ensure authenticity when photos are all you have
You cannot ensure authenticity from a single photograph. The strongest remote process is layered: identify the exact release, compare several known copies, inspect every seam and flap, verify the variant and certification record, and preserve a return option. If those layers leave unresolved contradictions, treat the game as uncertain rather than upgrading a “sealed” description into a fact.
Warning signs that justify pausing
- The seller cannot identify the region, edition, or variant.
- Only one front photograph is available.
- Seams are hidden by glare, cropping, or protective packaging.
- Flap edges and bottom corners are not shown.
- The seller refuses to answer whether the box was ever opened or resealed.
- A certification number does not match the item’s description or photographs.
- The price assumes a sealed-game premium without title-specific, dated evidence.
Protect the item after inspection
A box protector or display case can reduce future handling damage, but it does not authenticate a game. Choose one by the exact dimensions and format of the box, and inspect the item before placing it inside. Do not let a protector, sleeve, or case prevent you from photographing seams and corners or from checking the package against the seller’s listing.
What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
Seal practices vary by publisher, console, region, and release. CGC and PSA describe their own grading approaches; their categories should not be treated as a universal standard. No visual checklist can prove the contents are original without opening the package, and no grade guarantees a profitable sale or a particular resale price. The safest purchase is the one where the release identity, physical evidence, seller disclosures, certification record when applicable, and transaction protections all point in the same direction.
