The right robot mower for a large, hilly lawn is the one whose measured area capacity, in-field slope rating, boundary slope rating, drive system and navigation requirements all match your property. Start by measuring the mowable grass and the steepest incline; then check the exact regional model’s specifications and whether your site can support its boundary or satellite system. A headline “maximum slope” is a conditional manufacturer rating, not a guarantee on wet turf, around obstacles or at a steep edge.

For a concrete reference, Husqvarna’s current US specifications list the Automower 435X AWD at 0.9 acres and up to 35° inside the installation, while the 535 AWD EPOS is listed at one acre and up to 70% (35°). Those figures are useful screening limits, not independent side-by-side performance results.

Define “large” with a real mowable-area measurement

Manufacturers size robot mowers by the area of grass they can maintain, not by the total size of a property. Subtract buildings, patios, driveways, ponds, planting beds, play areas and permanent no-mow zones before comparing models. A two-acre parcel may contain less than one acre of robot-accessible turf; a compact property with several separate lawns may be harder to service than a single open field.

Measure grass the mower can actually reach

  1. Draw the proposed mowing boundary around every usable grass section.
  2. Exclude areas that require a gate to open, a person to carry the mower, or a crossing that the installation instructions do not permit.
  3. Add the remaining grass areas together and record the result in acres or square metres.
  4. Note narrow passages, separate zones and sections that can only be reached by crossing a path. These affect scheduling and navigation even when the total area is below the headline capacity.

Husqvarna’s buying guide labels its area figures with an approximate ±20% qualification. Treat a published capacity as a model-selection starting point rather than a promise that the mower will finish every property on the same schedule. A steep, fragmented or obstacle-heavy lawn generally needs more operating time than a flat, open rectangle of the same area.

Compare capacity with your schedule

Ask whether the mower can cover the full area while respecting the hours you want it to operate. A model may technically be rated for your acreage but need long daily runs, leaving less recovery time for charging and less flexibility during rain or restricted quiet hours. Obtain the current regional rating for the exact model and software configuration; capacity figures can differ between markets and model variants.

Measure the steepest slope, not the average grade

A robot mower can be comfortable on most of a lawn and still fail at one short bank. Measure the steepest continuous section in the mowing area and measure steep edges separately. The relevant comparison is the mower’s maximum slope in the work area and its lower maximum by a boundary.

Calculate slope percentage

Husqvarna gives this formula in its support guidance:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Slope (%) = vertical height ÷ horizontal distance × 100.

For example, a 15 cm rise over 100 cm of horizontal distance is a 15% slope. Measure horizontally, not along the surface of the grass. Repeat the measurement at the steepest point rather than relying on a visual estimate or a phone reading taken on an uneven patch.

Keep percentage and degrees distinct

Percentage grade and angle are different units. Do not compare a manufacturer’s percentage limit with another model’s angle as if the numbers were interchangeable. The Husqvarna 535 AWD EPOS page expresses its limit as up to 70% (35°), giving both units for that specification. When comparing another model, convert all values to the same unit or retain the manufacturer’s paired figures.

Measure the boundary separately

A mower may climb a slope in the middle of a work area but lack the traction or clearance to follow a boundary on the same incline. Husqvarna’s support table lists 70% in the work area and 50% by the boundary for the 435X AWD/435X AWD NERA family. The difference is substantial: a steep perimeter can require a stay-out zone even when the central part of the hill is within the mower’s rating.

Mark the steepest outer edge, the transition at the bottom and top of each bank, and any narrow strip beside a wall, road or drop. Check each against the model-specific boundary limit before you decide that the lawn qualifies.

Use published specifications as screening limits

The following figures come from current manufacturer pages available in 2026. They are not independent comparative tests, and the 435X AWD figures are from a US comparison table while the 535 AWD EPOS figure is from its US product page. Confirm the current regional listing, exact edition and installation type before purchase.

Model Published area rating Published slope information Important qualification
Automower 435X AWD 0.9 acres 35° maximum inside the installation in Husqvarna’s US comparison table; the support table lists 70% in the work area and 50% by the boundary for the 435X AWD/435X AWD NERA family Manufacturer figures; the area guide carries an approximate ±20% qualification. Boundary capability is lower than in-area capability.
Automower 535 AWD EPOS 1 acre Up to 70% (35°) on the product page Manufacturer specification. The installation guidance adds specific obstacle, boundary-wire and level-ground conditions on steep slopes.

Do not select the 535 AWD EPOS solely because “70%” sounds higher than another model’s angle figure, or assume the 435X AWD’s 35° headline applies to every edge. Capacity, boundary limits, navigation infrastructure and site layout must all pass the check.

Understand what AWD changes—and what it does not

All-wheel drive can improve the range of terrain a mower is designed to handle by distributing drive to more wheels. It does not eliminate the effects of wet grass, loose soil, sharp turns, ruts, sudden transitions or an obstacle placed in the middle of a climb. A mower that is within its published limit can still slip when it turns across a slope.

Obstacles make a rated slope harder

Husqvarna warns that trees, rockeries and similar obstacles force a mower to turn on a steep slope. Turning increases the chance of slipping, particularly when the grass is wet, and repeated wheel spin can wear a visible path into the turf. Inspect every steep section for objects that will trigger a turn, not just objects that physically block the mower.

Separate traction from safety

Exclude a slope beyond the model’s limit rather than hoping a grippy tire will compensate. Also exclude a section where a slip could send the mower into a road, pond, retaining wall or drop. A protective barrier at least 15 cm (6 in) high is recommended by Husqvarna where a slope borders a public road. Follow the exact model’s safety and boundary instructions; a generic curb or decorative edging is not automatically an adequate barrier.

Choose a safer travel direction

For wire-free EPOS installations, Husqvarna recommends stay-out zones around slopes beyond the mower’s limits and says a pattern straight up a slope can improve traction and reduce grass wear where possible. Physical-wire installations have their own boundary-island and guide-wire rules. A guide wire that approaches a steep bank incorrectly can make the mower cross or turn at the worst point, so follow the model’s prescribed routing rather than improvising a diagonal.

Account for transitions

The top and bottom of a hill can be more troublesome than the uniform grade. A sharp lip, soft shoulder or drainage channel may unload a wheel, break traction or cause the chassis to ground out. Include these transitions in the site survey and create a stay-out zone if the mower cannot cross them smoothly at low speed.

Choose between physical wire and satellite positioning

Navigation architecture is as important as slope capability. A physically wired installation uses a perimeter wire and guide-wire layout. A wire-free system uses positioning equipment and virtual boundaries, but it is not independent of the site: the mower and its reference equipment need a reliable signal environment.

What EPOS requires

The 535 AWD EPOS product page describes satellite-based EPOS using RTK GNSS and states that its RS5 reference station is required. Husqvarna lists both physical-wire and virtual-wire boundary types for that product. Before buying a wire-free configuration, identify a suitable reference-station location, power and mounting requirements, cable routes, and the areas where the mower must maintain positioning accuracy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check sky visibility and obstructions

Mammotion’s support guidance for its LUBA RTK system illustrates the type of site constraint that can matter: it says both the mower and RTK reference station need at least a 90° open-sky view for reliable signal. The same guidance does not recommend substantial tall-tree or wall coverage or narrow, obstructed lanes. Those criteria apply to that system, not automatically to every RTK mower, so obtain the equivalent requirements for the system you are considering.

Walk the intended routes and mark tree canopies, tall hedges, walls, roof overhangs and narrow corridors. A satellite system that works in an open centre may lose reliability beside a building or under dense canopy. If the site cannot provide the manufacturer’s required visibility, compare a physical-wire installation or redesign the mowing zones.

Inspect the lawn for obstacles, surfaces and exclusion zones

List every object that can force a turn

  • Trees, boulders, raised beds and rockeries on a slope.
  • Drainage grates, irrigation covers and exposed roots that can catch a wheel.
  • Retaining walls, steps and abrupt changes between paving and turf.
  • Children’s equipment, pet areas and temporary furniture that may be present during mowing.

Decide whether each object will be permanently protected by a boundary or island, physically removed, or left for manual trimming. On a steep bank, an island around an obstacle can create a turning manoeuvre that is less safe than excluding the entire section.

Evaluate turf and weather

Maximum-slope claims are conditional. Wet grass reduces available traction; loose soil, leaves and frost change the surface again. A mower that is reliable in dry conditions may slip after rain, especially while turning. Program weather pauses where the system supports them, and inspect steep routes for wheel ruts or polished tracks during the first weeks of operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect people and property

Keep the mower away from public roads, open water, retaining-wall drops and any place where a loss of traction could cause injury or damage. Use the manufacturer’s required barriers and stay-out zones, not an assumed buffer. If a steep edge cannot be made safe within the installation rules, retain that area for manual mowing.

Build a model-by-model comparison before you buy

For every candidate, record the following in one worksheet. This prevents a high acreage number or an AWD label from hiding a mismatch elsewhere.

Check What to record Why it matters on a large, hilly lawn
Area rating Manufacturer’s recommended area for the exact regional model, including any stated qualification Shows whether the mower can cover the measured grass within a practical schedule.
Work-area slope Maximum grade or angle inside the installation Sets the screening limit for the central lawn.
Boundary slope Separate maximum by the perimeter or boundary wire Prevents a steep edge from invalidating an otherwise suitable model.
Drive system Two-wheel, four-wheel or other drive arrangement, plus stated terrain limits Indicates how the manufacturer expects the mower to handle climbs and turns; it is not a substitute for site preparation.
Navigation Physical wire, RTK/EPOS or another system Determines installation work and whether trees, walls or narrow lanes are acceptable.
Reference equipment Base or reference station, power, mounting and visibility requirements Wire-free systems fail as a purchase choice if the required equipment cannot be placed correctly.
Obstacle rules Required clearances, island rules, stay-out zones and guide-wire routing Steep obstacles increase turning and slipping risk.
Service and parts Local installer, replacement blades, batteries and authorised service availability A large property depends on predictable maintenance and support, especially when installation is complex.

Manufacturer specifications are the strongest evidence for their own products, but no independent comparative performance test was established for these figures. Treat the table as a screening tool and ask an installer to assess unusual slopes, retaining walls or difficult signal conditions before committing.

Ask about support before installation

Find out who handles boundary layout, firmware issues, damaged guide wire, battery replacement and slope-related adjustments in your area. A complex property may justify a paid site assessment even when the mower can technically be self-installed. Get the scope in writing, including which steep sections will be excluded and who is responsible for correcting signal or boundary problems.

A practical pre-purchase site survey

Complete this checklist with measurements and photographs before requesting a quote or placing an order:

  1. Record the mowable grass area after subtracting permanent exclusions.
  2. Measure the steepest interior slope using vertical rise and horizontal run; calculate its percentage.
  3. Measure every steep boundary and compare it with the manufacturer’s separate boundary limit.
  4. Mark obstacles on slopes and note where a turn would be unavoidable.
  5. Identify road edges, drops, ponds and walls that require barriers or stay-out zones.
  6. Map narrow lanes, gates and separate zones; verify that the selected navigation system can maintain them.
  7. For RTK/EPOS, choose a reference-station position and check the required open-sky view at the mower routes.
  8. For a wired system, plan perimeter islands, guide-wire runs and level approach space around the charging station.
  9. Estimate how much grass will be lost to the 1.5 m and 50 cm clearances or other model-specific exclusions.
  10. Obtain a written confirmation of the exact regional model, area rating, work-area slope, boundary slope and included installation hardware.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by acreage alone

An acreage number does not reveal how much of the property is steep, fragmented or inaccessible. Correct it by measuring mowable grass and evaluating the operating schedule, transitions and separate zones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the highest slope number everywhere

In-area and boundary limits can differ sharply. Correct it by testing the steepest perimeter and retaining an exclusion when it exceeds the boundary rating.

Assuming AWD makes installation irrelevant

AWD does not remove the need for level strips, obstacle clearance, safe barriers or dry-surface traction. Correct it by following the exact installation guidance and observing the first mowing cycles for slipping or turf damage.

Buying wire-free without a signal survey

RTK/EPOS systems still depend on reference equipment and satellite visibility. Correct it by confirming sky-view requirements and reference-station placement before ordering.

Trusting an old or generic specification

Regional editions and equipment bundles can change. Correct it by checking the current manufacturer listing and manual for the exact model number, then documenting the figures in your purchase records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a robot mower is not the right tool for part of the lawn

Manual mowing or a separate machine may remain the safest option for a short section that exceeds the boundary limit, has a hazardous drop, cannot provide required signal visibility or forces repeated sharp turns around obstacles. Excluding that section is preferable to operating a mower beyond its published conditions. A mixed plan—robot maintenance on qualifying turf and occasional manual work on excluded banks—can be more reliable than forcing one machine to cover the entire property.

The decision rule

Buy only when all of these statements are true for the exact regional configuration:

  • The measured mowable area fits the manufacturer’s recommended capacity with reasonable schedule margin.
  • The steepest interior grade is within the stated work-area limit.
  • Every boundary, edge and transition is within the lower boundary limit or is safely excluded.
  • Obstacle placement, turf condition and wet-weather risks can be managed without dangerous turns or repeated wheel slip.
  • The physical-wire layout or RTK/EPOS signal environment meets the installation requirements.
  • You can obtain compatible parts, local support and a safe installation for the site.

If one item fails, revise the boundary, choose a different navigation or drive configuration, or retain that section for manual mowing. The most dependable purchase is not the mower with the largest headline number; it is the model whose measured limits and installation conditions match the lawn you actually have.
