Before buying a remastered PS1 game, check the exact version for your console, what the package includes, what the developer changed, and whether its controls, saves, languages, and accessibility features suit you. “Remastered” alone does not tell you those details. Use the current official listing for your region to confirm them, especially when a collection or more than one console version is involved.

Start with the exact game, edition, and platform

First confirm that the listing is for the particular game or collection you intend to buy and the console on which you plan to play it. A product may have versions for more than one PlayStation generation; do not assume that their features or compatibility notes are identical. Read the platform names and any notes attached to the version you select.

For example, the PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered identifies PS4 and PS5 versions and warns that some PS4 features may be absent when the game is played on PS5. That is a title-specific compatibility note, not a rule for every PS4 game on PS5. Check the listing for your exact version rather than relying on a general assumption about backward compatibility.

  • Confirm the console version named on the product page.
  • Read compatibility notes for that version, including any stated feature differences.
  • If you are buying through a retailer, verify that its selected edition and platform match the official product information.

Make a one-minute identity check

Before comparing graphics or prices, match the game name, edition name, platform icon and region. Collections can have similarly named standard, deluxe or legacy products, while a retailer may display several console versions on one page. Open the exact platform selector and make sure the selected version is the one in your cart. If the page is ambiguous, use the publisher or PlayStation product page as the reference and ask the seller to clarify rather than guessing.

Also distinguish a remaster from a separate remake, port or emulated rerelease when the listing uses several labels. The buying questions remain similar, but the amount of visual, control and gameplay change can differ. Only the title’s own feature description can establish what this release actually does.

Check exactly what the package contains

A collection’s title may name several games, but the title alone is not a complete contents list. Check whether the package includes the original games, expansions, add-on levels, or other extras you expect. This matters particularly when a collection groups several releases under one remastered label.

The U.S. PlayStation listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered names:

  • Tomb Raider I and Unfinished Business
  • Tomb Raider II and Golden Mask
  • Tomb Raider III and The Lost Artifact

Use the product page for your region to confirm the contents of the version you are considering. A regional page is a better check than assuming that a package description seen elsewhere applies to your purchase.

Separate core games from extras

Write down every item you expect before buying: the named original games, expansion campaigns, bonus levels and any other advertised material. Then compare that list with the official included-content section. A collection can be excellent value for one buyer and poor value for another if the buyer already owns some entries or mainly wants an expansion that is not included. The product title is a marketing label; the bullet list is the useful evidence.

Check whether the page describes extras as included in the base product or as separate purchases. If the listing does not explain an item clearly, do not count it as part of the package until the seller or publisher confirms it. Keep screenshots or a saved copy of the current contents list for your own comparison, but remember that an older capture does not establish what a current offer contains.

Find out what “remastered” means for this game

The label does not, by itself, specify what changed. Look for the developer’s description of graphics and presentation, any option to restore the original look, performance claims, audio changes, and other features. If the listing or developer explanation does not state a resolution or frame rate, do not treat one as guaranteed.

Presentation and original visuals

Check whether the new presentation is fixed or whether you can switch between updated graphics and the original appearance. If you prefer the look you remember, an original-visuals toggle may be important; if you want the updated presentation throughout, it may matter less. Confirm the scope of the option in the title’s own feature description instead of assuming it affects every visual or gameplay element.

Rank #2
Tomb Raider I, II & III Remastered /PS5
  • Tomb Raider I, II & III Remastered /PS5

For Tomb Raider I–III Remastered, the PlayStation listing describes upgraded graphics and an option to switch to the original polygon visuals. Aspyr’s Director of Product, Chris Bashaar, said the team used the original source code and engine and aimed to preserve the original gameplay while adding features. He described toggling back to the original look and feel as a critical feature. These details explain this collection’s approach; they do not define what another remaster will include.

When reading a feature list, note whether it promises upgraded environments, character models, lighting, textures, menus or only a general visual update. Those descriptions answer different questions. A toggle may restore polygon visuals without restoring every original menu, sound effect or control behavior. Unless the developer specifies the scope, treat “original” as a description to investigate, not proof that every element is unchanged.

Performance and audio claims

Look for explicit information about performance and audio if either is a deciding factor. Do not infer a frame rate, resolution, or audio treatment from a promotional image, the console generation, or the word “remastered.” Where the official material does not state a particular technical figure, that figure is not established by the listing details described here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same discipline for sound: look for a stated audio remaster, soundtrack treatment, voice-language list or other concrete description. If no technical claim appears, record it as unknown rather than filling the gap with assumptions based on another game in the series.

Inspect the controls and gameplay changes

Controls can shape how an older game feels as much as its graphics. A remaster may preserve the original scheme, provide a modern alternative, or change the experience in other ways. Check for a specific explanation of control options and whether you can select between them; do not assume modern controls replace the original or that a familiar control scheme is available.

In Aspyr’s account of Tomb Raider I–III Remastered, the original tank-style controls remain available as a menu option, and modern controls have been added. The company describes the original games’ gameplay as preserved. That is a developer description of this release, not a guarantee that all remasters retain original gameplay or control behavior.

If controls are central to your decision, look for details on what each scheme changes and whether the game lets you switch options in its menus. A listing that only says “updated controls” may not answer whether the original controls remain available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask whether the change is optional

Optional features are different from mandatory changes. A visual toggle or selectable control scheme can let you choose the experience you want, while a fixed change applies to every play session. Look for wording such as “toggle,” “menu option” or “choose between” and note whether it applies to all included games. If the description says only that the game has been updated, seek a fuller developer explanation before assuming you can return to the original behavior.

Verify saves, pausing, languages, and accessibility

Check practical features against your own needs rather than treating them as minor listing details. Save behavior, whether the game can be paused while offline, supported languages, accessibility information, player count, and any online or account requirements can affect whether a release works for you. The official listing is the place to confirm these items, and availability may vary by platform or region.

For the cited Tomb Raider I–III Remastered listing, PlayStation includes information about manual save points, pausing while offline, accessibility features, and voice and screen languages. These are examples of what to look for, not evidence that another game offers the same options. If a feature matters to you and the product page does not make it clear, do not assume it is included.

  • Saves: Look for the described save method and whether it fits how you want to play.
  • Pausing: Check whether pausing is supported in the conditions that matter to you, including offline play if relevant.
  • Languages: Distinguish voice language from screen or text language where the listing separates them.
  • Accessibility: Read the specific features listed rather than relying on a broad accessibility label.
  • Online and account conditions: Check whether the listing states any requirements that affect your setup.
  • Players: Confirm the listed player count if you intend to play with someone else.

Turn your needs into yes-or-no checks

Make a short personal list before opening the store page. For example: “Can I save manually?”, “Can I pause offline?”, “Is my preferred screen language listed?”, “Does the accessibility information address the feature I need?”, and “Can another person play locally?” Then answer each from the current listing. This prevents a prominent graphics claim from distracting you from a practical requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Language labels deserve particular care. Voice language and screen or text language may be listed separately, so a release can support one without supporting the other. Likewise, a broad accessibility heading does not tell you which options are present. Read the individual features and compare them with your needs.

Compare editions using the same questions

If multiple editions or platform versions are available, compare them feature by feature rather than choosing by name alone. Record what each official listing actually says; a missing detail is not proof that a feature is absent, but it is a reason to seek confirmation before treating it as a buying advantage.

What to compare Question to answer
Included content Which games, expansions, levels, or extras are named for this edition?
Graphics and presentation What visual changes are described, and can you switch to the original look?
Controls and gameplay Which control schemes are offered, and does the developer describe gameplay changes?
Console compatibility Which platform is this version for, and are any compatibility or feature differences stated?
Practical features What does the listing say about saves, languages, accessibility, player count, and online requirements?
Price and format What is the current price, format, and seller’s purchase terms for your region?

The first five rows are feature checks that can be answered from a sufficiently detailed product listing and developer description. Price, stock, format, and retailer terms are current-purchase details: verify them on the listing where you are actually buying. They can change, so an old article or page capture cannot establish what is available now.

A practical comparison worksheet

For each edition, copy the platform, included items, visual options, controls, save information, languages, accessibility details and player count into one note. Mark a detail “stated,” “not stated” or “needs confirmation.” This avoids treating silence as a promise and makes differences visible when two pages use similar promotional language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare like with like. A digital listing and a physical listing may have different seller terms, while a PS4 version played on PS5 may carry a compatibility note that does not appear on the native PS5 version. Compare the exact products, not just the franchise name or cover image.

Use the current listing to check availability and purchase terms

Before completing a purchase, verify the seller, format, included content, selected platform, region, and current terms. Do not assume a listing is a physical copy unless it explicitly identifies that format. Likewise, an old price or availability claim may no longer match the current offer.

Older PS1-era games can be difficult to republish when publishing rights or licenses are unclear or have expired. In historical comments about PSone releases, Ross McGrath of the SCEE PlayStation Store Team explained that original licenses sometimes covered only the life of the original product and did not anticipate a later release on another platform; a publisher may also no longer exist. This is general context for why rereleases can be complicated, not a prediction about whether a particular remaster will remain available.

Do not confuse availability with value

A game being listed does not automatically make it the right edition for you. Confirm that the current seller is legitimate, that the region is correct, and that the format matches your hardware and preference. Check the final purchase terms at checkout, including what product is selected, rather than relying on a search-result snippet or an old announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rights complications also explain why a title can appear on one platform or in one region and not another. They do not establish that a specific game will disappear, return, or receive a particular edition. Treat availability as a current fact to verify, not a forecast.

What the Tomb Raider collection example shows

Tomb Raider I–III Remastered is a useful example of why it pays to read both a product listing and a developer explanation. The PlayStation listing identifies PS4 and PS5 versions, names the three games and their expansions, describes upgraded graphics with a switch to original polygon visuals, and provides information about manual saves, offline pausing, accessibility, and languages. It also includes a platform compatibility caveat. Aspyr’s account adds detail about the original source code and engine, the aim of preserving gameplay, and the choice between tank-style and modern controls.

Aspyr’s Director of Product reported “over 200 trophies” for this collection in 2024. That number is specific to this title and the developer’s statement; it is not a typical trophy count for remasters. The example is not a recommendation to buy this collection. Its value here is that the listing and developer explanation answer different questions: the listing covers purchase and platform details, while the developer account explains some of the design choices.

How to read the example without overgeneralizing

The collection demonstrates a useful two-source method. First, use the store page for the concrete buying facts: platforms, named games and expansions, visual options, saves, pausing, accessibility and languages. Second, use the developer’s explanation for intent and implementation details, such as the use of original source code and engine, preserved gameplay, the tank-style control toggle, modern controls and additional features including photo mode. Finally, separate title-specific facts from general expectations. “Over 200 trophies” describes this collection, not a standard remaster requirement.

That method works even when the answer is “not stated.” A missing frame-rate figure, unclear language list or unexplained control change is a prompt to seek confirmation, not permission to assume the most favorable interpretation.

A step-by-step buying checklist

  1. Open the official regional page. Start with the store or publisher page for the country and console you will use.
  2. Select the exact platform. Read the compatibility note attached to that version, including any PS4 and PS5 feature differences.
  3. Copy the contents list. Record every game, expansion, level and named extra; do not rely on the collection title.
  4. Read the change list. Look for graphics, presentation, original-look options, performance, audio and other explicit claims.
  5. Check controls. Determine whether original controls remain, whether modern controls are optional, and what the developer says about gameplay.
  6. Check practical features. Verify saves, pausing, languages, accessibility, player count and online or account conditions.
  7. Compare editions. Put competing versions in the same worksheet and mark unknown details for confirmation.
  8. Verify the offer at checkout. Confirm seller, region, format, current price and terms immediately before paying.

This sequence keeps the most common errors separate: buying the wrong platform, missing an expansion, expecting an unstated technical specification, or overlooking a save or language requirement. It also gives you a clear stopping point. If a requirement is essential and the listing cannot confirm it, postpone the purchase until you have an authoritative answer.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Assuming all remasters use the same formula: One developer’s choices do not define another title.
  • Reading only the headline: A collection name does not replace the included-content list.
  • Assuming backward compatibility is identical: The Tomb Raider listing specifically notes that some PS4 features may be absent on PS5.
  • Inferring resolution or frame rate: Treat technical figures as unconfirmed unless official material states them.
  • Assuming “modern controls” removes the original scheme: In the cited collection, tank-style controls remain a menu option.
  • Confusing voice and screen languages: Check each category separately.
  • Treating a general accessibility label as a complete specification: Read the actual features.
  • Assuming a digital listing is physical: Format must be identified explicitly.
  • Using an old price or stock claim: Purchase terms are current and region-specific.
  • Turning rights history into a prediction: Licensing complications explain possible rerelease difficulty but do not forecast one title’s future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “remastered” guarantee a particular resolution or frame rate?

No. Check the title’s official listing and developer explanation for explicit performance or resolution claims. If no figure is stated, do not treat one as guaranteed.

How can I tell what is included in a PS1 remastered collection?

Read the current regional contents list and record each named game, expansion, add-on level and extra. For example, the U.S. listing for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered names each game with its associated expansion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy the PS4 or PS5 version?

Choose the version that matches your console and compare its compatibility notes. The Tomb Raider listing identifies both versions and warns that some PS4 features may be absent when played on PS5, so do not assume the editions are identical.

Do remasters usually keep original controls?

There is no universal rule. Check the developer’s description. Aspyr says the Tomb Raider collection retains tank-style controls as a menu option and adds modern controls, but another remaster may make different choices.

What practical features should I verify before buying?

Check save behavior, offline pausing, voice and screen languages, specific accessibility options, player count, and any online or account requirements. Feature availability can vary by platform and region.

Is an original-graphics toggle the same as restoring the whole original game?

Not necessarily. Confirm what the developer says the toggle changes. The Tomb Raider listing describes a switch to original polygon visuals, while other presentation or gameplay elements may follow the release’s own design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I rely on an old price, stock notice or retailer description?

No. Verify the current seller, region, format, included content, price and purchase terms on the listing where you will buy. Older pages may not reflect the present offer.

Why are some PS1 games difficult to rerelease?

Historical PlayStation Store comments explain that older licenses sometimes covered only the original product’s life, did not anticipate later platforms, or involved publishers that no longer existed. This is general context, not a prediction about a particular remaster’s availability.

What does “over 200 trophies” mean for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered?

It is a title-specific figure reported by Aspyr’s Director of Product in 2024. It is not a standard or expected trophy count for remasters generally.

The Bottom Line

Before buying, verify the exact platform and regional edition, list every included game and expansion, and read what the developer actually changed. Then check original-look and control options, saves, pausing, languages, accessibility, player count and any compatibility notes. Confirm the current seller, format, price and terms at checkout. If an essential feature is not stated, treat it as unknown instead of assuming that the word “remastered” guarantees it.
