Before paying for a remastered game, verify six things: the exact platform and edition, upgrade eligibility for any copy you own, included content, save and achievement compatibility, hardware requirements, and the live price in your region. “Remastered” is not a standard package, so the name alone does not tell you what changes or extras you receive.
Start with the exact release you are about to buy
Search results often combine several products under one title: an original release, a remaster, a remake, a deluxe edition, a current-generation patch, and a PC version. Open the store page for the specific platform and edition you intend to use, then record the product name exactly as displayed. Check whether it is a new purchase, an upgrade entitlement, or an update applied to an existing game.
Match the platform and generation
Confirm the console generation, PC storefront, and physical or digital format. A remaster can be available on PS5 and PC but not on PS4, or on several consoles with different feature sets. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, for example, is listed for PS5 and PC, while The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered and Suikoden I&II HD Remaster have their own platform lists. Do not assume that owning an older console version grants access to every newer version.

Use the regional store you will actually use
Prices, taxes, currencies, upgrade offers, and availability can differ by country. A disc may also need to match the country of the PlayStation Network account used for an upgrade. Sign in to the store for your account region before comparing prices or assuming an offer applies.

Determine whether your existing copy qualifies for an upgrade
An upgrade is not an automatic reward for owning any version of a game. Eligibility can depend on the title, platform, edition, purchase account, disc, console hardware, and region. Check the store’s upgrade wording and the publisher’s support page together.
Identify the copy that you own
- Write down whether your copy is physical or digital.
- Record the exact edition, such as standard, deluxe, complete, or a bundle.
- Confirm the platform and generation shown on your purchase receipt or account library.
- Check whether the copy is tied to the account you will use for the upgrade.
Check physical-disc restrictions
Disc-based upgrades often require the disc to remain available as a license check. PlayStation states that a PS4 disc owner who buys a disc-free PS5 Digital Edition cannot access the Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered upgrade offer. Insomniac’s upgrade guidance for Marvel’s Spider-Man likewise says a physical PS4 copy requires a PS5 with a disc drive for the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade. In both cases, the disc is not interchangeable with a digital entitlement simply because the game title is the same.
Insomniac also identifies a country-matching condition between the disc and the PlayStation Network account. If you import a disc, verify that condition before buying an upgrade or relying on a local account.

Do not generalize one publisher’s policy
CD PROJEKT RED describes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered as a free upgrade for specified existing owners on specified platforms, with regional exceptions. That policy does not establish a free upgrade for another game. Read the terms attached to your exact edition and platform; a paid upgrade, a free update, and a full-price remaster are different transactions.
Map exactly what the price includes
The word “remastered” does not guarantee that expansions, downloadable content, bonus missions, or deluxe extras are bundled. Compare the edition description line by line before deciding whether the remaster replaces content you already own or asks you to buy it again.
Use an inclusion checklist
- Base game.
- Story expansions and season-pass content.
- Previously released downloadable missions, characters, or modes.
- Cosmetic packs, soundtracks, art books, or other edition bonuses.
- Any new remaster-only content or features.
- Separate access requirements for multiplayer or online services.
Example: an expansion bundle can change the value calculation
CD PROJEKT RED says its The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered offering includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Its FAQ also states that those expansions are included with the update on the specified platforms. If you already own them, the value of the purchase is mainly the remaster’s technical changes; if you do not, the bundle may replace separate expansion purchases. The same conclusion cannot be applied to another remaster unless its own edition terms say so.
Distinguish an upgrade from a complete edition
An upgrade may convert only the base game while leaving separately purchased add-ons in your account, or it may grant a complete edition. Look for language such as “includes,” “entitled content,” and “requires the original game.” If an item is merely listed as compatible downloadable content, that does not prove it is included in the purchase price.

Read similar-sounding product labels carefully
Store pages may place a remaster beside a remake, a current-generation update, a deluxe edition, or the original release. These labels can describe different transactions even when the artwork is nearly identical. Confirm the release date, platform icon, edition name, and whether the listing says “upgrade,” “update,” or “full game.” If the page opens an older version by default, switch the product selector before checking the price.
Also check whether the listing is for a bundle or an individual add-on. A season pass, soundtrack, art book, or cosmetic pack may appear in the same search results but does not necessarily contain the playable remaster. Save a screenshot or note of the included-content section if the store’s wording is likely to change during a sale.
Verify saves, trophies, and achievements before deleting the original
Save transfer and achievement carryover are separate questions. A remaster can accept your old save while changing progression, or it can require a particular import path. Never uninstall the original or overwrite its saves until the publisher explains the transfer process.
Find the supported transfer path
- Back up the original save using the platform’s cloud or USB option where available.
- Install the remaster and check its title-screen import or save-transfer menu.
- Follow the publisher’s stated sequence; some games require the original version to be installed or launched first.
- Load the imported file and confirm characters, inventory, quests, and playtime before removing the old installation.
Expect gameplay changes even when a save imports
CD PROJEKT RED says existing The Witcher 3 saves are compatible with the remastered release, but skills reset because the skill system was overhauled. A successful import therefore does not mean that your character is unchanged. Review any progression-system changes before spending points or continuing a late-game save.
Check achievements independently
The same FAQ says The Witcher 3 achievements carry over. Insomniac says a save can be transferred from Spider-Man PS4 to Spider-Man Remastered. KONAMI’s product information for Suikoden I&II HD Remaster also identifies save-conversion conditions, so read those conditions rather than assuming a conventional import. These are title-specific examples, not a general rule. A game may import progress but create a separate trophy list, require you to earn achievements again, or carry over only selected statistics.
Ask what happens to the original license
Some upgrades remain tied to the original purchase. Before selling a disc or changing accounts, establish whether the remaster is a standalone license or whether the original disc must still be inserted. A digital upgrade may remain linked to the purchasing account, while a disc upgrade can require the physical disc every time you play. The store and support page should answer this directly; if they do not, ask support before disposing of the original copy.
Compare the remaster’s technical requirements with your hardware
For a console, confirm the supported generation, storage requirement, display features, and disc-drive dependency. For a PC, compare the official minimum and recommended specifications with the computer you will actually use, not just the model name on an older purchase.

PC checks that matter
- Operating-system version and 64-bit requirement, if stated.
- Processor, graphics card, and graphics-memory requirements.
- System RAM and free storage, including room for patches.
- Supported display resolutions and refresh rates.
- Upscaling, frame-generation, ray-tracing, HDR, and ultrawide support.
- Required graphics drivers and launcher or storefront account.
PlayStation’s PC information for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered identifies ultrawide resolutions and named upscaling and frame-generation technologies. Those features are useful only when your monitor, graphics card, driver, and game settings support them. Treat a feature label as a compatibility question, not as a promise that every PC will run it smoothly.

- Whether the remaster runs on the console generation you own.
- Whether performance and quality modes are available, and at what output resolution or frame-rate target.
- Whether a physical upgrade requires a disc drive.
- Whether the game needs separate storage for the original and remastered versions.
- Whether accessories, online services, or a platform subscription are required for particular modes.
Compare the real price, not a headline list price
Open the live store page for your country and platform immediately before purchase. Record the full-edition price, the eligible upgrade price, and the cost of any content you would otherwise buy separately.

Official pages demonstrate that upgrade offers exist, but no single price applies to every game, platform, and region. PlayStation’s listing for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, for instance, provides an upgrade offer and local-store pricing context; use the store associated with your account rather than an old price shown in a video or article.
Calculate the replacement cost
If you already own the original, write down the cost of the upgrade plus any expansions or bonuses not included. If you do not own the game, compare the complete remaster edition with the original game plus every add-on you would need. This avoids treating a low upgrade fee as a bargain when the required DLC is sold separately, and avoids paying full price for a bundle whose contents are already in your library.
Build a side-by-side comparison before you buy
When more than one edition or platform is available, put the terms in one place. This prevents a familiar title from hiding a meaningful difference between versions.

Assuming “free upgrade” applies to every owner
Free upgrades usually name eligible editions, platforms, and dates or regions. Check the exact entitlement attached to your account. If the offer says “select owners,” treat that word literally.
Buying a digital-only console for a disc upgrade
A disc license cannot be authenticated by a console without a disc drive. The Horizon Zero Dawn and Spider-Man upgrade guidance makes this restriction explicit.

Assuming every remaster includes every DLC pack
Inspect the edition’s included-content list. The Witcher 3 bundle includes its two major expansions, but that inclusion is not evidence about another title.
Confusing save compatibility with identical progression
Import rules can preserve a save while changing skills, equipment, or other systems. Read patch notes and support FAQs before allocating points or continuing a critical save.

Ignoring platform-specific features
A PC version may add ultrawide support or named upscaling and frame-generation options, while a console version may offer different performance modes. Compare the version you can run, not the most impressive feature list from another platform.
Deleting the original before testing the import
Keep the original installation and a backup until the remaster has loaded the transferred file successfully. Confirm your progress and downloadable content first; an import menu alone is not proof that every item transferred.
