Before you order a refrigerator, confirm that the exact model fits both the kitchen opening and the route into your home, meets your household’s storage needs, and can be connected and installed as required. Then compare its energy information and calculate the seller’s full delivered cost, including any installation or haul-away charges. Check the seller’s terms and the model’s warranty before paying; delivery, returns, and coverage are not universal.
How do you measure for a new refrigerator?
Start with two separate fit questions: will the refrigerator fit in its intended space, and can it get there? A product-page width and height do not answer either question by themselves. Trim, baseboards, uneven floors, cabinet edges, door swing, and narrow turns can all affect fit or access. Manufacturer guidance from LG advises measuring the delivery path as well as the refrigerator space; use the installation instructions for the exact model you are considering to confirm its dimensions and required clearances.
Measure the opening and surrounding space
- Measure the opening in several places. Record height, width, and depth at more than one point. Walls, floors, and cabinets may not be perfectly even, so use the tightest measurement when judging whether the refrigerator will fit.
- Account for anything that projects into the space. Include cabinet trim, baseboards, handles or other obstructions, and note whether the floor slopes or changes height. Compare the refrigerator’s listed dimensions with the space it will actually occupy, not just the nominal cabinet opening.
- Check the model’s clearance and ventilation requirements. Find the installation manual or specifications for the exact model and configuration. Do not assume every refrigerator needs the same gap around it. Bosch, for example, advises at least 1 inch at the sides, top, and back unless the model specifies otherwise; treat that as Bosch guidance, not a universal rule.
- Check how far the doors must open. A refrigerator may fit into the opening but still be awkward to use if a wall or cabinet blocks its doors or drawers. Frigidaire says adjacent walls or cabinets may require 3–4 inches of additional width for full door opening, depending on the model. Check the selected model’s own door-swing and clearance requirements.
- Record the measurements. Keep the opening dimensions, available depth, and needed door clearance together. Compare them against the model’s specifications before adding it to your cart.
Measure the delivery path
Trace the route from the delivery entrance to the final location. Check exterior doors, interior doorways, halls, corners, stairways, and any tight turn. Note narrow points and obstructions such as railings, light fixtures, or door hardware. Compare the route’s usable space with the product dimensions and with any delivery instructions the seller provides. If a doorway or turn looks close, ask the seller or delivery team what measurements they need before scheduling; do not assume a refrigerator that fits the kitchen can pass through the route.
Record the route measurements and disclose access issues when arranging delivery. Ask what happens if the delivery team cannot bring the unit to the intended room, and whether a failed attempt or special access requires another charge. Those answers depend on the seller and service arrangement.

How big a refrigerator should you buy?
Choose capacity around the way your household shops, cooks, and stores food, then check whether the interior layout makes that capacity usable. Cubic feet alone cannot tell you whether shelves accommodate the containers you use, whether drawers are accessible, or whether frozen food is easy to reach. Compare the interior photos and specifications for the exact models, including shelf positions, door storage, drawers, and the location of fresh and frozen sections.
Match capacity to your routine
- Think about how much fresh and frozen food you typically keep on hand, including drinks, leftovers, bulk purchases, and large or awkward items.
- Consider whether you shop frequently or prefer to stock up. The right size is the one that holds your normal load without leaving you with unusable space or forcing you to crowd shelves.
- Check whether shelf height and drawer arrangement suit your food and containers. Adjustable shelves can matter more to your daily use than a small difference in stated capacity.
- Measure the space for frequently stored items, such as tall bottles or wide trays, against the product’s interior layout when those items are important to you.
ENERGY STAR says its most energy-efficient refrigerator models are typically 16–20 cubic feet. That describes a range common among its most efficient models; it is not a recommendation that every household should buy a refrigerator in that size range. ENERGY STAR also cautions that, generally, “the larger the refrigerator, the greater the energy consumption.” Choose a size that meets your storage needs rather than buying extra capacity without a use for it.
Choose the configuration around the kitchen and household
Compare top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and other configurations available in your preferred size. Consider which section you reach for most, whether freezer access is convenient, and how doors open in your kitchen. A wide door may conflict with an island or nearby cabinet; a different layout may make it easier to access the contents in a tight space. Also check whether drawers can be pulled out fully when the refrigerator is in its intended position.

How do you know whether a refrigerator is energy-efficient?
Compare the exact model’s energy use, not just its size, configuration, or marketing language. Look for ENERGY STAR certification and the product’s EnergyGuide information or annual energy-use estimate, where available. Those details help compare products; they do not guarantee a particular change in your household’s electric bill.
Understand the efficiency figures
| Figure | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| About 9% more energy efficient | ENERGY STAR’s current refrigerator consumer guidance, accessed in 2026, compares certified refrigerators with models meeting the federal minimum standard. | Use it as a broad comparison of certification, not as a promise of a 9% bill reduction for your home. |
| 10% less measured energy | The ENERGY STAR criteria page says standard-size refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers of at least 7.75 cubic feet must use 10% less measured energy than the federal minimum for the cited specification. The page identifies a criteria change dated August 5, 2021. | Check the criteria for the product category and specification that apply; do not treat this threshold as a household-bill estimate. |
| $45 in lifetime energy-cost savings | The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program’s guidance, updated December 2023, gives this modeled comparison for an ENERGY STAR refrigerator versus its less-efficient reference. It assumes an 18.1-cubic-foot top-freezer refrigerator, federal-site electricity-price assumptions, and a 16.2-year product life. | This is a federal model, not a forecast of your electricity savings. Your utility rate, use, and chosen products may differ. |
ENERGY STAR certification criteria vary by refrigerator category. Confirm certification and energy information for the model you are buying rather than assuming that all refrigerators—or all models in a particular configuration—meet the same threshold. When comparing two products, put their annual energy-use estimates side by side along with capacity and layout. A lower estimate can be useful, but the figures should be read in the context of the models’ sizes and features.
What connections and clearances should you check before checkout?
Installation requirements can turn a suitable-looking model into a project requiring additional work. Read the exact model’s installation instructions, then compare them with the connections and space in your kitchen. If the instructions or product listing are unclear, ask the seller or installer before ordering rather than assuming a standard connection will be available.
Water supply for an ice maker or dispenser
If the refrigerator has an ice maker or water dispenser, check whether it requires a water connection and where that connection must be located. For the installation described in its guide, Frigidaire specifies a working shut-off valve connected to a 1/4-inch stainless steel water line within six feet of the appliance and on the same floor. This is manufacturer-specific guidance: confirm the requirements in your selected model’s manual and with the installer. Ask whether the seller’s installation service includes connecting a line, what existing plumbing it requires, and what happens if the connection is not ready.

Electrical and ventilation requirements
Check the model’s instructions for its electrical requirements and any restrictions on placement. Compare those requirements with the outlet and available space at the intended location. Follow the manual’s ventilation and clearance specifications; a general measurement rule cannot replace the requirements for the model. If the location needs electrical or other building work, establish that before scheduling appliance delivery and installation.
Door, drawer, and cabinet conflicts
Look at a floor plan or the kitchen itself with the refrigerator doors open. Check whether doors, handles, and pull-out drawers can clear adjacent walls, cabinets, counters, and islands. Confirm that the refrigerator can be positioned as specified while still allowing the access its doors and drawers need. A product’s exterior width alone does not establish that it will work comfortably in the kitchen.
How do you compare the full online purchase cost?
Do not treat the product-page price as the delivered-and-installed total. Before paying, review the checkout details and service terms for your address. Costs and available services vary by seller and location, so confirm the actual amount and conditions shown for the order you are placing.

| Cost or service | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Delivery | Whether delivery reaches your address and intended room, whether stairs or difficult access change the charge, and what appointment windows or rescheduling rules apply. |
| Installation | What the service includes, whether it requires an existing suitable electrical or water connection, and whether additional connection work is excluded or separately charged. |
| Water-line work | Whether the refrigerator requires it, whether the service will connect an existing line, and whether new plumbing or parts are an extra cost. |
| Old-unit haul-away | Whether pickup is offered for your address, whether it costs extra, which appliance it covers, and what preparation is required. |
| Access or delivery failure | How the seller handles a refrigerator that cannot pass through the route or be placed in the intended location, including any extra trip or return-related charge. |
ENERGY STAR says many appliance retailers offer pickup and recycling when a replacement refrigerator is purchased, and recommends recycling the old unit. That does not establish that pickup is included with your order. Confirm eligibility for your address, any fee, and preparation requirements with the seller. Include confirmed service charges in your total before comparing prices across listings.

Who handles refrigerator delivery, installation, and haul-away?
The answer depends on the seller, service provider, and delivery address. A listing may offer delivery without installation, or may offer services only in certain areas. Verify who is responsible for each part of the job instead of inferring it from a general “delivery” or “installation” label.
- Confirm the service area includes your full address and the intended installation location in the home.
- Ask whether delivery includes carrying the refrigerator inside, placing it in the kitchen, removing packaging, and connecting it, or only bringing it to a specified point.
- Confirm who will install the refrigerator and whether the installer handles the model’s required water connection.
- Check whether haul-away is available for your address, whether the old refrigerator must be disconnected or prepared in a particular way, and whether the service costs extra.
- Ask how access problems, missed appointments, damage, or incomplete installation are reported and resolved.
Save the order details and any service confirmations. They establish what was included in your particular purchase if the delivery or installation does not go as expected.
What should you check about returns, damage, and warranty coverage?
Read the seller’s terms that apply to the exact order and the manufacturer warranty for the exact model before paying. Online appliance orders do not have one universal return period, damage-reporting deadline, or warranty package. Do not rely on a general claim in a listing when the applicable checkout terms or warranty document says something different.

Seller return and damage terms
Find the return conditions, deadline, process, and any fees or restrictions. Check how the seller requires delivery damage or a missing part to be reported, including where to report it and what documentation is needed. If the appliance arrives with visible damage, note it with the delivery team and follow the seller’s stated reporting process promptly. Keep the order confirmation and delivery records so you can refer to the transaction and the terms that applied.
Manufacturer warranty
Locate the warranty information for the exact model and read what parts, labor, and time periods it covers, along with exclusions and the process for requesting service. A seller’s return policy and a manufacturer’s warranty answer different questions: a return concerns the purchase under the seller’s terms, while a warranty concerns covered product problems under the manufacturer’s terms. Check both rather than assuming one replaces the other.
What is the final pre-checkout checklist?
- Fit: The opening, clearances, and door swing match the exact model’s specifications.
- Route: You have checked the path from the entrance to the final location, including narrow turns and obstructions.
- Capacity and layout: The storage volume, shelves, drawers, and freezer arrangement suit your household and kitchen.
- Energy: You have compared the model’s ENERGY STAR status and available EnergyGuide or annual-use information without treating a modeled figure as a bill guarantee.
- Connections: Electrical, water, and ventilation requirements are clear, and any needed work is accounted for.
- Total cost: Delivery, installation, line work, access charges, and haul-away are confirmed for your address.
- Service terms: The delivery scope, appointment conditions, placement, packaging removal, and failed-delivery process are clear.
- Protection: You have read the seller’s return and damage-reporting terms and the exact model’s warranty.
If any dimension, connection, service, or policy is unclear, resolve it with the seller or manufacturer before placing the order. That check is more useful than relying on a generic size rule or assuming an online listing includes services it does not specify.
