Before ordering a Radxa Dragon Q8B, verify four things: the board revision and memory size, a genuine 20 V USB-C power setup, the storage and display path required by your operating system, and compatibility of any wireless, cooling, or case accessories. Radxa specifies at least 3 A (60 W) through USB-C and recommends its 65 W adapter, while Windows installation and BIOS access require HDMI rather than USB-C display output.

What the Dragon Q8B is—and what the specifications do (and do not) promise

The Dragon Q8B is a single-board motherboard built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 (SC8280XP). Radxa’s published specification lists an eight-core Kryo CPU, Adreno 690 GPU, Qualcomm AI Engine rated at up to 29+ TOPS, LPDDR4X memory configurations up to 32 GB, and a 100 mm × 75 mm board. Those are vendor specifications, not independent benchmark results; the 29+ TOPS figure should not be read as a measured application-speed claim.

Expansion is unusually broad for this form factor. The board provides two 2.5GbE ports, HDMI 2.1, two USB-C ports with DisplayPort Alt Mode, two M.2 M Key 2280 sockets, a UFS 3.1 connector, a microSD slot and a 40-pin GPIO header. The complete port and feature list is in Radxa’s Dragon Q8B documentation, while the product page identifies display and revision-dependent wireless details at Radxa’s product page.

1. Confirm the exact board revision and memory configuration

Do not treat every Dragon Q8B listing as interchangeable. Ask the seller for a photograph or written confirmation of the board revision and installed memory before paying. Radxa’s product page states that Wi-Fi 7 support through the M.2 E Key slot requires motherboard version V1.3 or later. A unit with an earlier revision may still be suitable for your project, but you should not count on that particular wireless capability without confirming the revision marked on the board.

Memory is likewise not an upgrade you should assume can be added later. The specification describes LPDDR4X configurations up to 32 GB; it does not establish that every seller carries every capacity or that the memory is user-replaceable. Match the capacity to your workload at purchase time and save the listing or invoice that identifies it.

Downloadable images, firmware and installation instructions change. Check the current Dragon Q8B Resource Downloads page immediately before ordering if a particular operating-system image or firmware feature is decisive.

2. Buy the correct power supply and cable

The documented plug-in setup

Radxa’s Quick Start guide calls for either a 20 V USB Power Delivery adapter or a fixed 20 V Type-C adapter, plus a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. It recommends output of at least 3 A, equivalent to 60 W, and names a 65 W adapter as its recommended accessory. The adapter must be capable of supplying the stated voltage and current; a high-wattage charger that negotiates a different profile is not automatically equivalent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a full-featured, USB-C-to-USB-C cable rated for the intended power. Radxa’s instruction is explicit: “Do not use a Type-C to Type-A cable.” A USB-A charger and an A-to-C cable do not provide the documented input arrangement, even if the plug physically fits a cable adapter.

Do not confuse the power input with the data/display ports

The board also exposes USB-C ports for data and DisplayPort Alt Mode. They are not a substitute for the dedicated USB-C power input identified by the board labeling and quick-start instructions. Connect the supply to the documented power port, then use the separate data/display ports for peripherals or monitors.

When the 12–20 V header is relevant

The hardware specification lists a separate power-input header accepting 12–20 V. That route can make sense in an embedded build with a regulated supply and a custom harness, but it is a different integration method from the documented plug-in setup. If you are assembling a normal desktop-style kit, use the dedicated USB-C input. If you use the header, follow the pin labeling in the current documentation and verify polarity and regulation before applying power.

  • Buy: 20 V USB-C PD or fixed-20 V Type-C adapter, rated for at least 3 A (60 W).
  • Include: USB-C-to-USB-C cable; do not substitute USB-C-to-USB-A.
  • Check: the board’s dedicated power-port label, not merely the presence of a USB-C connector.
  • Remember: the 65 W figure is Radxa’s recommended adapter rating, while 60 W is the stated minimum recommendation.

3. Decide how you will boot and store the operating system

microSD: the simplest documented starting point

Radxa’s quick-start workflow writes a system image to microSD and boots the board from that card. The microSD installation guide is the appropriate reference for the current image-writing and boot procedure. Select a card from a reputable source, but do not assume that a card is included with a motherboard listing unless the seller explicitly states it.

NVMe: faster storage with two different M.2 slots

The Q8B has two M.2 M Key 2280 sockets, but they are not electrically identical: one is PCIe 3.0 ×4 and the other is PCIe 3.0 ×2. Choose the slot according to the drive and workload you intend to use. A PCIe ×4-capable SSD cannot create ×4 bandwidth when installed in the ×2 socket. Before installing a drive, identify the socket’s lane assignment in the current board documentation and make sure any heatsink or enclosure leaves room for the selected 2280 module.

Radxa documents NVMe installation using an enclosure in its NVMe system guide. That documentation supports NVMe as a boot or system-storage path, but it does not mean a drive is supplied with every board. Budget for the SSD, mounting hardware and any thermal solution separately.

UFS: an additional onboard-storage option

The specification includes a UFS 3.1 connector. UFS is a separate storage format from both microSD and M.2 NVMe, so check the chosen operating system’s image and installation support before buying a module. Do not order a physically similar M.2 card for the UFS connector or assume that a UFS module is included in a bare-board package.

Choose storage by operating system and workload

Storage path Best fit Pre-purchase checks
microSD Initial testing, a simple removable system, or the documented first boot Confirm the image supports the Q8B and that the card is not merely pictured but actually included.
M.2 M Key 2280 NVMe Persistent, higher-performance system or application storage Choose the ×4 or ×2 socket deliberately; verify 2280 clearance and current installation instructions.
UFS 3.1 module A compact integrated-storage design where the chosen OS supports UFS Confirm module availability, image support and connector compatibility before ordering.

4. Plan the display and first-boot method around your operating system

Windows 11 ARM64: use HDMI for installation and BIOS

Radxa’s Windows 11 installation guide requires a separate installation USB and Radxa’s driver package. It also states that USB-C DisplayPort output is unavailable in the current BIOS and becomes usable only after the required drivers are installed. Therefore, connect an HDMI monitor for Windows installation, BIOS access and the boot menu. A USB-C monitor may work later in the installed operating system, but it is not a reliable first-boot display for this process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a normal graphical setup, prepare an HDMI display, keyboard and mouse. If you intend to use a USB-C display cable for routine operation, make sure it is a dual-ended USB-C cable and keep HDMI available for recovery or firmware work.

Linux and other systems

Radxa lists Radxa OS, Windows, Ubuntu, Armbian, Arch Linux, Nix OS and Debian among possible systems. Availability and feature support vary by image and release. Use the current downloads page rather than an old image copied from a third-party tutorial. Radxa notes that third-party operating-system compatibility settings may need to be enabled in BIOS, so read the instructions for the specific image before assuming it will boot with factory settings.

Headless operation

A monitor is not mandatory for every use case. Radxa’s system-usage guide describes serial and SSH access, and the quick-start material lists a USB-to-serial cable as an optional debugging tool. A headless installation still needs a known-good initial boot path and network configuration; keep HDMI available if you have not yet confirmed remote access.

5. Check wireless-card compatibility instead of relying on the connector shape

The wireless expansion socket is M.2 2230 E Key. That describes the physical interface, not universal electrical, firmware or antenna compatibility. Radxa’s M.2 E Key 2230 guide says to contact technical support before purchasing other models to confirm compatibility. Treat that as a purchase requirement: identify the exact card model and obtain confirmation if it is not a module specifically documented for the board.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi 7 support is additionally limited by motherboard revision: Radxa lists it for V1.3 and later. Record both the card model and the board revision in your order notes. If a seller cannot identify either one, buy on the assumption that wireless support is unconfirmed rather than promising yourself a particular standard.

6. Budget for cooling and an enclosure without assuming they are included

Radxa identifies the Heatsink 6845B as specialized for the Dragon Q8B and the MagCase 1082 as a matching case. Those names help you avoid ordering a generic accessory with the wrong mounting pattern or clearances. They do not establish that either item is bundled with every board. Read the exact listing contents and ask the seller if the photograph shows accessories that are not named in the package.

Cooling is especially important if the board will sustain CPU, GPU, storage or AI workloads. The official material supplied here does not provide an independent thermal test or a measured board-wide power figure, so select the documented Q8B heatsink or another solution whose fit and thermal performance are established for your enclosure rather than inferring requirements from the “up to 29+ TOPS” specification.

7. Match the board’s interfaces to your project

Make an interface inventory before ordering so that an accessory does not consume a port you expected to use elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Interface Planning question
Two 2.5GbE ports Will the operating system expose both ports with the drivers supplied for your image?
HDMI 2.1 Can you reach BIOS and perform first boot even if USB-C display drivers are unavailable?
Two USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode ports Which one is needed for data and which for display, and does your operating system have the required drivers?
Two M.2 M Key 2280 sockets Which socket is PCIe 3.0 ×4 and which is PCIe 3.0 ×2 for your SSD?
UFS 3.1 connector Does your selected image support UFS, and is a compatible module part of your order?
40-pin GPIO header Have you checked the current pinout and voltage requirements before connecting a peripheral? Use Radxa’s 40-pin GPIO documentation.

8. Use this purchase checklist

  1. Identify the exact unit: record motherboard revision, memory capacity and seller-stated package contents.
  2. Confirm power: select a 20 V USB-C PD or fixed-20 V Type-C adapter capable of at least 3 A (60 W), plus a USB-C-to-USB-C cable.
  3. Choose boot media: decide between microSD, an M.2 2280 NVMe drive or UFS, and verify that the chosen OS supports it.
  4. Select the M.2 socket: use the PCIe 3.0 ×4 or ×2 slot intentionally; do not assume the two sockets perform identically.
  5. Prepare first boot: obtain an HDMI display, keyboard and mouse. For Windows, also prepare the installation USB and driver package.
  6. Validate wireless: confirm the exact M.2 2230 E Key model with Radxa if it is not explicitly documented, and check whether the board is V1.3 or later for Wi-Fi 7.
  7. Plan thermals and enclosure: verify whether the Heatsink 6845B and MagCase 1082 are included or must be purchased separately.
  8. Recheck volatile details: open the current downloads and installation pages immediately before you flash an image or update firmware.

9. Troubleshoot the mistakes most likely to stop a first boot

Symptom Likely mistake What to check
No power or intermittent resets Under-rated supply, wrong voltage profile, unsuitable cable or wrong USB-C port Use the dedicated power input with a 20 V, minimum-3 A supply and USB-C-to-USB-C cable; remove USB-C-to-A adapters.
No image during Windows setup USB-C monitor connected before drivers are installed Switch to HDMI for installation, BIOS and boot-menu access.
SSD is slower than expected Drive installed in the PCIe 3.0 ×2 socket Check which M.2 socket provides ×4 and move the drive only if the board layout and thermal clearance permit it.
Wireless card is not detected Unverified E Key model or board revision mismatch Confirm the exact module with Radxa support and verify the board revision, rather than relying on the connector shape.
Chosen OS does not boot Stale image, unsupported storage path or BIOS compatibility setting Use the current Resource Downloads page and follow the image-specific instructions; third-party images may require a BIOS compatibility setting.
Case or heatsink does not fit Accessory intended for another board or incomplete bundle Match the listing to Heatsink 6845B or MagCase 1082 by name and verify what is actually in the box.

10. What is established—and what you still need to verify at purchase time

The core electrical and interface requirements are documented: 20 V input, at least 3 A recommended through the USB-C setup, microSD and NVMe installation paths, two M.2 lane configurations, HDMI requirements for Windows setup, and revision-dependent wireless support. Several practical details remain seller- or release-dependent:

  • Retail stock, memory variants and the board revision of a specific unit.
  • Whether a listing includes a power adapter, cable, microSD card, heatsink, case, antennas or storage drive.
  • Current operating-system images, firmware and driver releases.
  • Compatibility of a particular third-party M.2 E Key wireless module.
  • Independent performance and power measurements. The official material does not provide a measured board-wide consumption figure or independent benchmark.

Use the official pages linked above as the final authority for the image and firmware versions available when you buy. A listing that omits revision, memory, storage and included-accessory details is not specific enough for a confident order.

Bottom line for a safe order

Order the Dragon Q8B only after you can write down the exact revision and memory capacity, the intended boot medium, and the accessories required for first boot. The minimum dependable setup is a 20 V USB-C supply rated for at least 3 A, a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, storage, and an HDMI display with keyboard and mouse. Add a Q8B-compatible heatsink or case if your package does not include one, and obtain model-specific confirmation for any M.2 2230 wireless card—especially when Wi-Fi 7 or a pre-V1.3 board is involved.
