There is no current mainstream consumer phone that runs Windows 11 as its handset operating system. For most buyers, “a Windows 11 phone” means an Android phone or iPhone that connects to a Windows 11 PC through Microsoft Phone Link. Phone Link does not install Windows 11 on the phone, and its features vary by exact model, software version, manufacturer and market.
Before paying for a handset, verify five things: the phone’s exact Phone Link capabilities, Android or iOS requirements, the manufacturer’s update commitment for that model and sales region, the actual battery condition, and the seller’s return terms. A former Windows phone is a different category: Microsoft lists Windows 10 Mobile support as ending on January 14, 2020.
First, identify what “Windows 11 phone” means
The phrase can describe two very different purchases. One is a phone that itself runs Microsoft’s old mobile operating system. The other is a current Android phone or iPhone intended to work with a Windows 11 computer. Treating these as the same thing leads to poor buying decisions.

Microsoft lists January 14, 2020 as the end-of-support date for Windows 10 Mobile. Microsoft’s support guidance says devices running an unsupported Windows version can continue to function, but they no longer receive the normal software and security support associated with a supported release. A legacy handset may still turn on or run installed software, but it is not a sensible choice for a new primary phone where current apps, security patches and dependable services matter.

Phone Link connects a phone to a PC
Phone Link is Windows software that connects a Windows 11 PC with selected Android phones and iPhones. The phone continues to run Android or iOS. Phone Link can expose communications and other functions on the PC, but it does not convert the handset into a Windows 11 device, and it does not make every phone feature available on every model.
Define the job before comparing phones
Write down what you expect to do from the Windows 11 computer. “I want my texts” is a different requirement from “I need the phone’s screen mirrored,” “I want to run mobile apps in a PC window,” or “I only need calls and notifications.” Phone Link capabilities are listed separately, so a phone that supports basic messaging may not support Phone screen or Apps.
- Messages and notifications: useful for routine communication, but availability can depend on the phone, permissions and regional rules.
- Calls: requires the pairing method and permissions specified by Phone Link; Bluetooth is particularly important for the iPhone setup.
- Phone screen: a distinct capability with device-specific restrictions. Do not infer support from the phone brand alone.
- Apps: a separate capability from Phone screen and subject to its own compatible-device list and market restrictions.
- Photos or other shared content: confirm the current Phone Link feature list and the exact model rather than assuming that a feature shown in a demonstration is universal.
Choose the feature that would make the purchase worthwhile, then check that feature against the exact model number. If the phone only supports the basic functions you need, paying extra for a feature it cannot provide will not improve the result.
Check the baseline Phone Link requirements
Microsoft’s setup information gives different starting requirements for Android and iPhone. These are platform-level prerequisites, not a guarantee that every function will work.
| Connection type | PC requirement | Phone requirement | Connection details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11 | Android 10 or later | Phone and PC need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for setup and use described by Microsoft |
| iPhone | Windows 11 | iOS 14 or later | Bluetooth and the latest Phone Link app are required; device and regional restrictions may apply |
Android: start with Android 10 or later
An Android phone below Android 10 fails the stated baseline requirement. A phone on Android 10 or later still needs to be one of the selected devices and manufacturers covered by Microsoft’s compatibility information. “Android” is not a blanket approval for every model.

For the initial check, confirm the installed Android version in the handset’s settings, note the precise model identifier, and make sure the PC meets the Windows requirement. During setup, keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. A phone that meets the version requirement but cannot be identified on Microsoft’s compatible-device information should be treated as unverified for the feature you want.
iPhone: treat it as a separate option
Microsoft lists iOS 14 or later, a Windows 11 PC, Bluetooth and the latest Phone Link app for iPhone connectivity. The iPhone feature set is not identical to Android’s, so an iPhone that can provide calls or messages should not be assumed to provide Android-style Phone screen or Apps support.

Microsoft notes that compatibility and regional restrictions may apply. If your main reason for buying is a feature shown in an Android demonstration, verify that the same feature is explicitly available for iPhone rather than relying on the shared Phone Link name.
Verify the exact model, not just the manufacturer
Compatibility lists and feature restrictions are model-specific. A manufacturer name is only a starting point because two phones sold under the same brand can use different processors, software builds, radios or regional variants.
- Record the full model name and model number from the listing, box or handset settings.
- Identify the sales region and carrier version. A model sold in one market may have different software or feature eligibility in another.
- Open Microsoft’s current Phone Link compatibility information and look for the exact model, not merely the brand family.
- Check each required capability separately. Confirm Phone screen, Apps, calls, messages or other functions individually.
- Ask the seller for a return option if the listing does not provide enough information to verify the model before payment.
Compatibility pages can change as Microsoft and phone makers add or remove support. Recheck the current list immediately before buying, especially for an older handset or an imported variant.

Check app access independently of Phone Link
Phone Link does not guarantee that an app you use on the PC will exist on the phone, that a phone app will appear in Windows, or that an app’s notifications and authentication flows will work through the connection. App availability is governed by the phone’s operating system, app store, region, hardware and the app developer.
Make an app inventory
- List essential banking, work, password-management, identity, messaging, navigation and authentication apps.
- Check the operating-system minimum version for each essential app.
- Confirm whether the app supports the phone’s region, carrier and required security features.
- Determine whether you need the full app on the handset or only notifications and basic interaction on the PC.
- For work or school accounts, verify whether the organization requires a particular security patch level, device-management profile or biometric capability.
Do not choose a discontinued Windows Mobile handset because an old app once existed for it. The platform’s January 14, 2020 end-of-support date means future app compatibility and security cannot be treated like those of a currently supported Android or iOS phone.
Verify the manufacturer’s update commitment for the exact phone
Phone Link documentation establishes connection requirements, not how many years a particular Android phone will receive operating-system upgrades or security patches. That information must come from the phone maker for the precise model and sales region.
What to ask the seller or manufacturer
- When did this exact model first go on sale in the region where you will use it?
- How long are operating-system upgrades promised?
- How long are security updates promised, and how frequently are they delivered?
- Does the promise cover the exact carrier or imported variant?
- Has the promised support period already started, and when is its stated end date?
A general statement such as “this brand supports phones for several years” is not a model-specific guarantee. Save the manufacturer’s page or written answer with the model number and region. If no clear commitment is available, treat future support as uncertain rather than filling the gap with the brand’s reputation.
Why update support affects a Windows 11 purchase
A phone can meet Android 10 or iOS 14 requirements today and still become a poor long-term companion if it stops receiving security fixes or later loses compatibility with essential apps. Update duration also affects resale value, account security and the likelihood that Phone Link features continue to work after a major platform change.

Assess battery life from the actual device
No comparative battery-life figures or used-device battery-health measurements are established here. Original capacity figures from a launch specification do not prove how long an older handset will run now. Lithium-ion batteries age with use, heat and charging cycles, so condition matters as much as the model name.
For a new phone
- Check the manufacturer’s stated capacity and any independent runtime test supplied by a trustworthy seller or publication.
- Confirm whether the stated result is a laboratory measurement, a video-playback test, a mixed-use estimate or a one-time promotional claim.
- Consider the workload: cellular reception, screen brightness, gaming, navigation, camera use and hotspot operation can change runtime substantially.
For a used or refurbished phone
- Open the operating system’s battery-health or diagnostics screen if the platform provides one.
- Ask for the measured health percentage or a clear statement of whether the battery is original or replaced.
- Inspect the seller’s condition grading for swelling, rapid drain, overheating and charging problems.
- Ask how long the phone lasts during the seller’s stated test conditions; do not convert that result into a universal runtime figure.
- Confirm the return window and whether battery performance is covered by the warranty.
Test the device as soon as it arrives. Pair it with the Windows 11 PC, install required updates, use your normal apps and observe drain over a representative period. A return policy is valuable because a listing cannot reveal every battery fault.
Check purchase condition and return protection
Condition determines whether compatibility checks are meaningful. A phone may be technically supported but unsuitable if it is carrier-locked, damaged, managed by a previous organization or missing required accessories.
- Model and region: match the physical device and software settings to the listing.
- Network status: verify carrier compatibility and whether the phone is unlocked where required.
- Account lock: make sure the previous owner has removed activation and device-management locks.
- Hardware: inspect the screen, charging port, cameras, microphones, speakers, biometric sensor and wireless radios.
- Software: confirm that the phone can receive updates and that it is not stuck on an unsupported or modified build.
- Returns: read the deadline, restocking rules and battery or cosmetic exclusions before paying.
Keep the packaging, receipts and screenshots of the listing until Phone Link, essential apps, updates and battery behavior have all been verified.

A practical buying workflow
- State the intended use. Decide whether the priority is messaging, calls, notifications, Phone screen, Apps or simply a reliable phone alongside Windows 11.
- Choose the platform. Compare a compatible Android phone with an iPhone only after noting that their Phone Link requirements and feature sets differ.
- Collect the exact identifier. Write down the model number, storage variant, carrier version and sales region.
- Check the baseline software. Confirm Android 10 or later for Android, or iOS 14 or later for iPhone, and verify that your PC meets Microsoft’s stated Windows requirement.
- Verify the desired Phone Link features. Use Microsoft’s current compatibility information and check each feature separately.
- Confirm update support. Obtain the manufacturer’s model- and region-specific operating-system and security-update commitment.
- Evaluate battery condition. For used phones, inspect health reporting and return terms; for new phones, distinguish published capacity from tested runtime.
- Pair and test immediately. Use the same Wi-Fi network for Android setup, enable Bluetooth where required for iPhone, install the latest Phone Link app, and test the functions you actually need.
- Keep or return based on evidence. If the model, feature, update or battery check fails, use the return process rather than assuming a software update will fix it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a “Windows phone” listing literally
Some listings use Windows terminology to describe PC connectivity. Read the operating-system field carefully. A current Android or iPhone that works with Phone Link is not a Windows 11 handset, while a Windows 10 Mobile phone is a discontinued platform with support ending January 14, 2020.

Confusing Phone screen with Apps
Microsoft treats these as separate capabilities. A phone may qualify for one and not the other, so check both if you need them.

Trusting launch-day battery specifications
Capacity is not current health, particularly for used phones. Inspect the actual battery and rely on return protection when the seller cannot provide a credible health measurement.
Ignoring regional restrictions
Phone Link compatibility and available functions can depend on market. An imported phone may not have the same eligibility as a local version with a similar name.
How to decide between Android, iPhone and a legacy Windows handset
| Choice | When it makes sense | Checks that remain essential |
|---|---|---|
| Selected Android phone | You need the broadest set of Phone Link possibilities and the model appears on Microsoft’s current compatibility information | Android 10 or later, same-Wi-Fi setup, exact feature support, model-specific updates, battery condition and return terms |
| iPhone | You already use iOS or prefer it and the available Phone Link functions meet your needs | iOS 14 or later, Windows 11, Bluetooth, latest Phone Link app, exact model and regional eligibility |
| Windows 10 Mobile handset | Only as a historical or hobby device where current support is not expected | Microsoft’s January 14, 2020 end-of-support date, app availability, security risk and realistic return expectations |
The table is a decision framework, not a model ranking. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner for battery runtime or update longevity. Those two factors must be checked on the exact phone you are considering.
Pre-purchase checklist
- I know whether I am buying Android, iPhone or a discontinued Windows Mobile device.
- I have written down the exact model number, carrier version and sales region.
- My Windows PC meets the stated Phone Link requirement.
- An Android candidate runs Android 10 or later, or an iPhone candidate runs iOS 14 or later.
- The exact Phone Link feature I need is listed for that model and market.
- I understand that Phone Link connects the phone to Windows; it does not install Windows 11 on the handset.
- I have a model-specific operating-system and security-update commitment from the manufacturer.
- I have checked battery health or a credible runtime test appropriate to the phone’s age and condition.
- The seller provides enough time to test pairing, apps, updates, calls, messages and battery behavior.
- I know how to return the phone if any essential requirement fails.
What the available documentation can and cannot establish
Microsoft’s Phone Link pages establish platform prerequisites, selected-device compatibility and feature distinctions. They do not establish a model-by-model battery ranking, a universal Android approval, or the update duration of each handset. No generic battery-runtime number should be applied to every phone, and no brand-level support slogan should replace a model-specific commitment.
Use the documentation as a verification step, not as a substitute for inspecting the phone you will actually receive. The safest purchase is the one whose exact model, required feature, software support, battery condition and return protection are all documented before payment.
