Before buying a new iPhone, decide four things in this order: how much storage you will actually keep on the device, whether a carrier deal limits your flexibility, what your old phone is really worth after inspection, and whether AppleCare+ matches your damage or theft risk. Use the written offer and current U.S. Apple terms—not a headline discount—to calculate the ownership cost.
Start with a four-part purchase checklist
A low monthly payment or large trade-in headline can hide restrictions. Write down these decisions before you place the order:
- Storage: compare your present phone’s capacity and used space with the photos, video, downloads and apps you expect to keep locally.
- Purchase route: compare an unlocked, paid-in-full purchase with each carrier installment offer, including the required plan, credits and payoff rules.
- Old-phone value: treat an online trade-in estimate as conditional until the receiving inspection is complete.
- Protection: compare the AppleCare+ premium and service fees with your likely accidental-damage, theft and loss exposure and any coverage you already have.
Keep the transfer plan in the same decision. Do not erase, disable account protections on, or hand over the old phone until your data, authentication methods and payment records work on the new one.
Choose storage from your real usage
Check the capacity and space you use now
On your current iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Record both the device capacity and the amount used. Look at the largest categories, especially Photos, Messages, downloaded video or music, games and creative apps. A phone that is nearly full today needs room for future camera files, operating-system updates and app growth; a phone with substantial unused space may not need a larger tier.

Apple’s current U.S. iPhone 17e listing shows 256GB and 512GB configurations. Those are available choices for that model, not a universal recommendation for every buyer or every iPhone generation. Capacity options and prices can change, so confirm the exact model page at checkout.
Estimate what will stay on the phone
Separate content you routinely keep offline from content you can remove or redownload. A commuter who downloads many films, a photographer who keeps a full local library, or a creator who stores large video projects needs more headroom than someone whose photos are optimized in iCloud and whose media is streamed. Consider a two- to four-year ownership period: deleting files every week because storage is full is a practical cost even when the larger capacity has a higher purchase price.
- Include your existing used space, not just the size of the newest apps.
- Allow room for new photos and videos, especially if you record high-resolution or long clips.
- Count offline maps, playlists, podcasts, shows and games separately from cloud-synced material.
- Leave working space for updates and temporary files; do not plan to run permanently at the limit.
Use a simple capacity decision
- Write down your current capacity and used space from iPhone Storage.
- Add the local content you expect to keep that is not on the phone today.
- Add a cushion for the years you expect to own the device.
- Choose the smallest offered capacity that comfortably exceeds that total, then compare its price with the next tier.
Cloud storage can reduce local use, but it is not the same as having the files available without a connection. Before choosing a smaller phone, verify that your cloud plan, network access and backup habits fit the way you travel and work. Apple’s product page establishes the available capacities; it does not prescribe a capacity by user type.
Compare an unlocked purchase with carrier financing
Understand what “unlocked” means in this decision
An iPhone bought outright from Apple is the straightforward flexibility option, subject to the model and regional terms shown at purchase. Financing changes the result. Apple states that an iPhone financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan or Verizon Device Payment Program is locked to that carrier until it is paid in full. A low monthly price therefore does not automatically mean you can move the phone to another network.
Put every offer on one worksheet
| Item to compare | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Amount due today | Down payment, taxes and activation or upgrade charges | A “free” phone can still require substantial upfront cash. |
| Installment term | Number of months and monthly device payment | A longer term lowers the monthly figure but extends the obligation. |
| Bill credits | Credit amount, start date and number of billing cycles | Credits may be conditional and can stop when the offer requirements are no longer met. |
| Required rate plan | Plan name, line requirement and recurring price | The plan cost can outweigh the device discount over the ownership period. |
| Trade-in eligibility | Accepted models, minimum condition and inspection rules | A promotion may demand a different device or condition standard than Apple’s ordinary estimate. |
| Lock and payoff rules | When the phone unlocks and what happens after early payoff | Paying early can affect remaining credits; verify the written terms before assuming it improves the deal. |
| Switching consequences | Credit loss, remaining balance and return requirements if you leave | This is the price of flexibility if your coverage or budget changes. |
Calculate the total, not just the discount
For each route, calculate:
Total device cost = amount due today + all device installments − bill credits + required device-related fees.
Then separately compare the required service plan with the plan you would otherwise keep. If a carrier requires a more expensive plan, include the difference for every month that the promotion requires it. A carrier offer can be cheaper for someone who already wants that plan and intends to stay through the credit period, but the same offer can cost more for someone who may switch or pay off early.
Questions to ask before accepting a carrier promotion
- Is the quoted credit available in your ZIP code and for your exact model, storage and line?
- Does the credit begin immediately or after several billing cycles?
- What condition and activation date must the trade-in meet?
- Do credits end if you upgrade, cancel the line, change plans or move to another carrier?
- What balance remains if you pay the phone off early, and does that action forfeit future credits?
- When, exactly, does the phone become eligible for unlocking?
Save a PDF or screenshot of the offer, including the fine print, before ordering. Carrier promotions are time- and eligibility-sensitive; the displayed terms on the day you buy control your result.

Evaluate the old phone’s trade-in value
Get a model-specific estimate
Use the exact model and storage capacity, then answer every condition question accurately. Note whether the phone powers on, the display and back glass are intact, buttons and cameras work, and whether liquid or other damage is present. Save the estimate and its expiration or submission instructions.

Apple inspects the device after it arrives. If its condition does not match your description, Apple says your original payment method will be charged the difference in value. The initial estimate is therefore not guaranteed cash. Credit timing also depends on whether you paid the new phone in full or selected monthly payments.
Compare three different outcomes
| Route | Value to compare | Main uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Trade In | Final inspected credit applied to the purchase or payment method | Inspection can revise the estimate; timing varies by payment method. |
| Carrier promotion | Total bill credits under the stated plan and trade-in conditions | Credits may stop if you leave, change eligibility or fail condition requirements. |
| Private sale | Expected sale price minus listing, payment, shipping and effort costs | Buyer disputes, fraud risk and the time required to complete the sale. |
Compare the net result rather than the largest advertised number. For example, a carrier’s high promotional credit is useful only if you will keep the qualifying line and plan long enough to receive it. A private sale may show a higher gross price but requires you to handle the transaction and protect your data. Apple’s estimate is simpler, but the inspection adjustment remains possible.
Prepare the phone without losing access
- Back up the old iPhone and confirm that the backup completes.
- Transfer data and accounts to the new iPhone, then test calls, messages, photos, passwords, authenticator codes and payment cards.
- Keep the old phone powered on until you can sign in and recover accounts from the new one.
- Follow Apple’s current trade-in instructions for disabling account protections, erasing content and packaging the device.
- Record the phone’s condition and serial or IMEI information, and keep the shipment receipt or handoff confirmation.
Do not treat a mailed trade-in as complete when you drop it off. The receiving inspection and final credit are still pending.

Know what each version adds
Standard AppleCare+ adds technical support and coverage for accidental damage. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss adds limited theft and loss incidents, subject to eligibility and a deductible. It is not blanket theft insurance: a claim has to satisfy Apple’s conditions, and the model-specific plan premium and regional terms must be checked before purchase.
Use the current U.S. service fees
Apple’s current U.S. fee page lists these service fees:
| Covered event | Service fee |
|---|---|
| Screen or back-glass damage | $29 |
| Other accidental damage | $99 |
| Theft or loss | $149 |
These are service fees, not the plan premium. Apple’s current fee page should be checked for the exact premium for your model, purchase date and region. The Theft and Loss page states coverage can be used up to two times every year, subject to the plan terms and claim approval.
Check the Find My requirement before you rely on theft coverage
Theft and loss coverage requires Find My to be enabled on the iPhone when it is lost or stolen and throughout the claims process. If you normally disable Find My, cannot sign in to your Apple Account, or cannot maintain that setting after a loss, the claim requirement may not be met. Confirm your account access and recovery method before a problem occurs.

- Estimate the AppleCare+ premium over the period you expect to own the phone.
- Add the applicable service fee for the type of damage you are most likely to claim.
- For Theft and Loss, include the separate theft/loss deductible and verify Find My and claim conditions.
- Check whether a homeowners, renters, travel, employer or credit-card policy already covers some risk, and compare its deductible and exclusions.
- Choose the plan only after checking the current model-specific and regional terms; prices and availability can change.
AppleCare+ can make an expensive repair or replacement more predictable, but the right choice depends on the premium, your ability to absorb an unexpected repair, how often the phone is exposed to damage or theft, and any overlapping coverage.

Build a complete ownership-cost comparison
Use one worksheet for the unlocked Apple route and every carrier route. Keep device and service costs separate so a cheap phone payment does not conceal an expensive plan.
| Cost or condition | Unlocked purchase | Carrier installment |
|---|---|---|
| Amount due today | Enter the checkout total | Enter down payment, taxes and activation or upgrade fees |
| Device payments | None if paid in full, or record Apple’s financing terms | Monthly payment × installment months |
| Credits | Trade-in credit after inspection | Only the credits you can realistically receive |
| Required plan difference | Difference from your existing plan | Extra monthly plan cost × required months |
| Flexibility cost | Usually no carrier-credit lock-in | Remaining balance or lost credits if you switch or pay off early |
| Protection | AppleCare+ premium and selected service fees | Same protection comparison; carrier insurance is a separate product |
For a fair comparison, use the same ownership period and the same storage model. Do not compare a carrier promotion for one capacity with an unlocked price for another.
Complete the purchase safely
Before ordering
- Confirm the model, storage, color, regional compatibility and delivery or pickup details.
- Read the written carrier offer and save its credit, plan, trade-in, lock and payoff terms.
- Check AppleCare eligibility, premium, service fees and Theft and Loss conditions.
- Make a current backup and verify that you know your Apple Account password and two-factor authentication method.
During setup
- Use Apple’s current transfer flow to move data from the old iPhone or its backup.
- Wait for photos, messages, passwords and other important content to finish syncing or restoring.
- Test cellular service, Wi-Fi, calls, messages, camera, notifications, payment cards and authentication apps.
- Confirm Find My is enabled if you purchased Theft and Loss coverage.
Before handing over the old phone
- Check that no account, password manager or authenticator still depends on the old device.
- Follow the exact erase and account-removal instructions for your trade-in route.
- Photograph the device condition and packaging, and retain tracking or handoff proof.
- Monitor for the final inspection result, revised trade-in amount or carrier credit on your statement.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing storage from a generic rule
Problem: buying the same capacity recommended for someone else. Fix: use your iPhone Storage screen, local-media habits and expected ownership period; Apple does not publish a universal capacity-by-user prescription.
Calling a financed phone unlocked
Problem: assuming the carrier’s monthly offer has no network restriction. Fix: identify the financing route and confirm the unlock milestone in writing. Apple says the AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon installment routes remain locked until paid in full.
Budgeting the initial trade-in estimate as guaranteed money
Problem: spending as though the quoted amount cannot change. Fix: describe the condition accurately, keep evidence and reserve enough funds for a possible inspection adjustment.
Erasing the old phone too early
Problem: losing access to an authenticator, messages or an account recovery method. Fix: finish transfer and independent testing first, then erase only as the trade-in instructions require.
Buying Theft and Loss coverage but disabling Find My
Problem: a claim may fail the stated eligibility condition. Fix: leave Find My enabled and maintain Apple Account access throughout any claim.
Comparing only monthly payments
Problem: a lower device payment hides a costly plan or credits that disappear after a switch. Fix: calculate the total device cost, plan difference and worst-case payoff or credit loss together.
A practical final decision sequence
- Choose the model and capacity from measured usage, expected local content and the price difference between tiers.
- Price the same configuration unlocked and through each eligible carrier.
- Write down the carrier plan, credits, lock status, payoff treatment and switching consequences.
- Obtain an exact-condition trade-in estimate, then compare its likely final value with the carrier promotion and a private sale.
- Transfer and verify your data before erasing the old phone.
- Compare the model-specific AppleCare+ premium and service fees with your risk and existing coverage; add Theft and Loss only if you can meet its Find My and claim conditions.
- Save every confirmation, offer and shipment record until the trade-in and all credits are finalized.
This process leaves you with a purchase that is sized for your usage, priced on total cost and still workable if your carrier, storage needs or protection requirements change.
