Before buying a materials-sector stock ahead of earnings, build a company-specific model from the issuer’s latest quarterly and annual filings, earnings release, and guidance. Check what the company sells, how prices are realized, what is hedged, whether production and costs are on plan, how much cash the business generates after capital spending, and whether the balance sheet can withstand a weaker commodity price. Then compare those facts with the expectations already reflected in the share price.
Do not treat a benchmark metal or material price as a direct forecast of quarterly profit. Contract terms, provisional settlements, hedges, currencies, grades, recoveries, input costs, maintenance, working capital and capital projects can all change the result. The examples below show why the same headline commodity can produce very different earnings sensitivity at different companies.
What should I check before buying a stock before earnings?
Use the latest filing and earnings release as the starting point, not a headline commodity chart. Record the company’s own assumptions and compare them with its previous guidance and actual results. Your review should answer seven questions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- What price does the company actually receive, and when is that price finalized?

- Are production, sales volumes, grades, recoveries and utilization tracking plan?
- What are the unit-cost, energy, labor, freight, processing and maintenance trends?
- How much cash remains after sustaining and growth capital, and what obligations compete for it?
- What assumptions support guidance, adjusted metrics and the current share-price expectations?
A pre-earnings decision is therefore an exercise in testing assumptions, not predicting whether management will beat consensus or how the market will react. A company can report higher profit and still see its stock fall if investors expected more; it can miss a short-term estimate while improving a longer-term project.

Start with the issuer’s primary disclosures
Read the latest quarterly filing first
Find the most recent quarterly filing and read the management discussion, segment results, commodity-price discussion, production tables, liquidity section, debt notes, derivative notes and commitments. Note the quarter-end date and whether the filing includes events after that date. A filing for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, for example, does not include operating changes that occurred in April unless the issuer separately disclosed them.
Write down reported revenue, operating income, cash from operations, capital spending, production and sales volumes, realized prices, unit costs and ending cash. Mark each figure as reported, adjusted, attributable or consolidated. Those labels determine what you can compare later.
Use the annual filing for structural risks
The annual filing explains reserve or resource assumptions, mine plans, processing capacity, environmental and reclamation obligations, geographic exposure, customer concentration, insurance, litigation, financing arrangements and long-term capital needs. It also describes risks that may not appear in one quarter, such as permitting, closure, tailings, labor agreements or dependence on a single facility.
Cross-check the earnings release and guidance
Read the earnings release alongside the filing. Releases often present management’s production, cost and capital-spending outlook in a compact format, while the filing supplies definitions and reconciliations. Create a timeline showing the previous guidance, any mid-quarter update, the current guidance and the assumptions that changed. A revised target is not automatically good or bad; the reason for the change matters.
Save the exact wording of forward-looking assumptions, including commodity prices, exchange rates, inflation, availability, project timing and tax expectations. Treat every forecast as an estimate subject to the risks the company discloses.
Map the business and its real commodity exposure
Identify products, assets and concentration
List the actual metals or materials sold, the operations that produce them, and the revenue or cash-flow share associated with each. A diversified producer may still have one mine, region, smelter, customer or product that dominates near-term results. Separate payable production from headline production where the filing does so, and distinguish by-products from the principal commodity.
For a materials manufacturer rather than a miner, perform the same exercise with products, end markets, plants, customers and input materials. A company selling specialty chemicals may be more sensitive to feedstock and contract formulas than to a published commodity benchmark.
Use sensitivity figures as company-specific evidence
Barrick Mining Corporation’s 2025 annual information filing illustrates the right way to read a sensitivity. For 2026 assumptions, it estimated that a $100-per-ounce change from its $4,500-per-ounce gold-price assumption would change EBITDA by approximately $650 million. It estimated that a $0.25-per-pound change from its $5.50-per-pound copper assumption would change EBITDA by approximately $110 million. These are Barrick’s assumptions about its expected production and sales, not a rule for every gold or copper producer.

Barrick also reported that gold prices ranged from $2,615 to $4,550 per ounce during 2025. Its average market gold price was $3,432 per ounce, 44% above the 2024 annual average. A historical average or range helps you understand the environment, but it does not tell you the price the company realized in the quarter or the price investors have already assumed.
Use a sensitivity table only after identifying the company’s production, payability, contract terms, hedges, royalties, taxes and cost base. If the issuer does not disclose a quantified sensitivity, do not manufacture one from a sector average.
| Item to record | Why it matters | Example or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Commodity and product | Determines which benchmark and cost drivers are relevant. | Gold and copper exposures at Barrick are distinct; a coal producer requires a different benchmark. |
| Price assumption | Provides the reference point for guidance and sensitivity. | Barrick’s 2026 guidance assumptions were $4,500 per ounce for gold and $5.50 per pound for copper. |
| Disclosed sensitivity | Shows the issuer’s estimated earnings response under its own operating plan. | Barrick estimated approximately $650 million of EBITDA change for a $100-per-ounce gold move and approximately $110 million for a $0.25-per-pound copper move. |
| Definition | Prevents false comparisons between measures. | Barrick states EBITDA has no standardized definition under IFRS. |
Understand price realization and settlement timing
Do not equate a benchmark move with current-quarter revenue
Ask whether sales are priced at spot, a fixed contract price, an index formula, a provisional price or a later settlement. Check the pricing period, quotation period, payability deductions, treatment and refining charges, royalties and any final-assay adjustment. A benchmark can rise during the quarter while the company’s invoices remain tied to an earlier average or a customer formula.
Provisional concentrate sales can be adjusted later
Hecla Mining Company’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 31, 2026, explains that concentrate revenue may initially use forward prices for an estimated settlement month. The amount can be adjusted until the customer makes final settlement. When reviewing a concentrate producer, compare provisional revenue with later settlement adjustments and ask which portion of the reported result remains exposed to future prices.
Contract duration and pricing terms differ by material
Warrior Met Coal reports steelmaking-coal contracts primarily with three-month pricing terms and volume terms of one to three years. That structure means contracted volumes can extend beyond the next quarter while the price resets more frequently. Do not generalize those coal terms to metal miners or to a company whose contracts use annual, fixed or index-linked pricing.
For each major product, record the contract price mechanism, volume commitment, reset date, settlement lag and customer concentration. Then compare the market benchmark with the realized price in the filing. A widening gap can be normal when timing or quality differs, but it deserves an explanation.
Examine hedges and currency exposure
Inventory the instruments and covered volumes
Read the derivative footnote and risk-management discussion. Identify collars, forwards, put options, swaps or other instruments; the commodity, currency or input covered; the notional and expected production or cost volume; the maturity; the strike or range; and whether the instrument is accounted for through earnings, other comprehensive income or another presentation.

Check settlement timing and residual exposure
A hedge may settle in a different month from the physical sale. Compare the derivative schedule with the production and shipment schedule, and note whether the company can exceed or fall short of the hedged volume. Over-hedging can create a loss if production is disrupted; under-hedging leaves more exposure to the market price.
Map functional and reporting currencies
Hecla describes Canadian operations with a U.S.-dollar functional currency and reports Canadian-dollar/U.S.-dollar remeasurement effects. It also discusses hedges on certain operating and capital costs. For any issuer, list the currency of revenue, labor, supplies, taxes, debt and capital projects. A stronger reporting currency can reduce translated revenue while lowering local costs, so the net effect depends on the mix.
Test operating performance, not just prices
Compare production and sales with guidance
Put actual production, shipments or sales beside the latest target and the prior-year period. Explain differences through grades, recoveries, utilization, throughput, weather, maintenance, labor, logistics, permitting or commissioning. Production can rise while sales fall if inventory builds or shipments are delayed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Separate temporary timing from persistent change
Classify every variance as timing, one-off disruption, revised plan or structural change. A mill shutdown that shifts shipments between quarters is different from a lower recovery rate caused by ore characteristics. A delayed project may move capital spending without changing the long-term plan, or it may reveal a larger execution problem.
Watch product mix and quality
Revenue per unit can change because of grade, impurity penalties, product specification, customer mix or by-product credits even when the benchmark is flat. Read the operating tables and explanatory notes for payable metal, concentrate quality, recovery and realized product mix where disclosed.
Build the cost and capital picture
Track the full cost stack
Review cash costs or unit costs using the issuer’s definition, then examine the underlying line items: energy, diesel, power, labor, explosives, steel, reagents, maintenance, freight, processing, royalties and supplies. Warrior Met Coal identifies diesel, steel, tungsten and explosives among production inputs and discusses inflation and interest-rate risk. Those disclosures show why a favorable selling price can be offset by input inflation.
Compare current unit costs with prior guidance and explain the bridge. Inflation that affects a recurring contract, wage agreement or energy supply may persist; a storm, major repair or inventory adjustment may not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDistinguish sustaining from growth capital
Record sustaining capital needed to keep current production operating separately from growth capital for expansions, new mines, plants or infrastructure. Check project stage, permits, construction progress, expected commissioning, remaining spend and funding source. A project that has not yet produced cash may require additional financing even when the income statement reports a profit.

Consider working capital and reclamation spending
Changes in receivables, inventories, payables and provisional settlements can make operating cash flow diverge from earnings. Include reclamation, closure, environmental and financial-assurance requirements in your cash model. These obligations can be material even when they are spread over many years.
Check cash, debt and obligations
Accounting earnings do not show whether the company can fund operations and commitments through a weak price cycle. Build a balance-sheet snapshot using the latest filing.
| Check | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Cash and liquidity | What cash, undrawn facilities and restricted cash are available? Are there minimum-liquidity requirements? |
| Debt maturity | When do principal repayments, refinancing or revolver renewals occur? |
| Interest exposure | Is debt fixed or floating rate, and how would higher rates affect cash interest? |
| Covenants | Which leverage, coverage or borrowing-base tests could tighten if prices fall? |
| Working capital | Could inventory, receivables, provisional pricing or customer concentration consume cash? |
| Leases and logistics | What minimum transportation, port, equipment or facility commitments remain? |
| Reclamation and closure | What financial assurances or future payments are required, and can estimates change? |
| Capital commitments | What has been contractually committed for projects, maintenance or acquisitions? |
Warrior Met Coal’s filing lists reclamation-related financial assurances, lease and logistics commitments, and debt and interest details. Use those disclosures as a prompt to look for the equivalent obligations at the company you are considering; do not assume a coal issuer’s amounts or terms apply elsewhere.
Scrutinize guidance and non-GAAP measures
Write down every assumption behind guidance
Capture production, sales, unit-cost, capital-spending, tax, exchange-rate and commodity-price assumptions. Compare each with recent actuals and the company’s record of delivering its own guidance. A target that is repeatedly lowered may be less informative than a narrower target supported by stable operating data.
Read the risk language attached to forward-looking statements. Guidance can omit events that occur after the filing date, and management may use assumptions that differ from the market’s benchmark or consensus.
Reconcile adjusted metrics
Adjusted EBITDA, adjusted earnings, all-in sustaining cost and similar measures are defined by each issuer. Start with reported financial statements, then follow the reconciliation to the adjusted figure. Check exclusions such as impairment, restructuring, foreign-exchange movements, share-based compensation, derivatives or unusual legal costs.
Barrick notes that EBITDA has no standardized definition under IFRS. Coeur Mining’s 2025 Form 10-K is another reminder that issuer-defined EBITDA measures require reconciliation before comparison. Two companies can use the same label while excluding different costs; compare the bridge, not the label.

Consider at least three outcomes—below, in line and above the company’s stated plan—and identify what would change cash flow, leverage or the project timetable in each. This is scenario analysis, not a forecast of the stock reaction. The cited filings do not establish a reliable way to predict whether the market will rise or fall after earnings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do commodity prices affect a mining company’s earnings?
The simplified relationship is price multiplied by payable sales volume, less unit costs and other deductions. Real companies add royalties, treatment and refining charges, taxes, hedges, provisional-price adjustments, foreign-exchange effects, by-product credits, interest and capital needs. Therefore, a higher benchmark can increase revenue without increasing free cash flow by the same amount.
Use the company’s disclosed sensitivity when available, and test whether the assumptions still hold. If production falls, a price gain may apply to fewer payable units. If energy or labor costs rise with the same market conditions, the margin gain narrows. If contracts reset later, the price effect may appear in a different quarter.

Hecla states in its first-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q that changes in silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper prices can significantly affect profitability and cash flow. Barrick’s filing similarly warns that gold-price fluctuations can be material, occur over short periods and result from factors beyond its control. These statements describe issuer risk; they are not a sector-wide earnings model.
Use a consistent framework when comparing materials companies
Compare companies over the same periods and use the same definitions wherever possible. A useful comparison sheet includes:
| Comparison area | What to normalize | Why it changes the conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Commodity mix | Primary and by-product exposure by revenue or cash flow. | Two companies with “gold” exposure can have different copper credits and sensitivities. |
| Realized price | Reported realization versus the relevant benchmark, including provisional adjustments. | Timing, quality and contract formulas can create a large gap. |
| Contracts | Fixed, indexed, spot or provisional pricing; duration and reset period. | Determines when market moves reach revenue. |
| Hedges | Instrument, volume, maturity, strike and accounting treatment. | Changes both upside and downside exposure. |
| Production and costs | Volumes, grades, recoveries, utilization and unit-cost trend. | Operational execution can dominate price movement. |
| Capital intensity | Sustaining versus growth capital and remaining project spend. | Profit may not convert to discretionary cash. |
| Jurisdiction and operations | Permitting, labor, infrastructure, power and geopolitical risks. | Creates different disruption and cost profiles. |
| Balance sheet | Cash, debt, maturities, covenants, interest and obligations. | Determines resilience in a down cycle. |
| Guidance and adjusted measures | Assumptions, definitions and reconciliations. | Prevents false precision and non-comparable multiples. |
If a value is not disclosed for one company, mark it as not stated rather than substituting an estimate. Keep reported, attributable and adjusted figures in separate columns.
A practical pre-earnings workflow
- Set the information date. Record the latest filing, earnings release, guidance update and quarter-end date. Exclude information published after your chosen cut-off from the base case, or label it separately.
- Build the exposure map. List products, assets, regions, customers, revenue shares, payable volumes and the benchmark relevant to each.
- Recreate the price bridge. Compare benchmark prices, realized prices, contract formulas, provisional settlements, deductions and hedging results.
- Reconcile operations. Put production, sales, grades, recoveries, utilization, maintenance and disruptions beside prior guidance and the prior-year period.
- Bridge costs. Separate price, volume, mix, inflation, foreign exchange, one-time repairs and other drivers of unit-cost changes.
- Model cash. Start with operating cash flow, subtract sustaining and committed growth capital, then account for working capital, interest, taxes, leases, reclamation and other required payments.
- Stress the balance sheet. Test a lower commodity price, weaker production, higher costs, a delayed project and a less favorable exchange rate. Compare the result with maturities and covenants.
- Check guidance quality. Compare the current assumptions with actual performance and the company’s history of revisions or delivery.
- Define the decision rule. State what evidence would make you buy, wait or reject the idea after earnings. Do not change the rule merely because the headline result surprises you.
Red flags that deserve an explanation
- Realized prices diverge sharply from benchmarks without a clear contract, quality or timing explanation.
- Production meets guidance only because sales were delayed, inventories rose or a lower-quality product mix was sold.
- Unit costs increase while management attributes the change only to “inflation” without identifying energy, labor, maintenance or consumable drivers.
- Hedge volumes exceed likely production, mature before shipments or are not reconciled to the derivative note.
- Adjusted EBITDA rises while operating cash flow falls because of working capital or recurring exclusions.
- Growth capital increases but permits, financing, commissioning dates or remaining spend are uncertain.
- Debt maturities, floating-rate interest, covenants, reclamation assurances or logistics commitments are close to available liquidity.
- Guidance is unchanged even though production, costs or project timing have moved materially.
- Management emphasizes a sector benchmark while omitting realized prices, contract terms or the company’s own sensitivity.
Questions to answer before placing an order
- Can I explain the company’s earnings exposure in one paragraph without relying on a generic commodity chart?
- Which assumption—price, volume, cost, currency, project timing or balance-sheet capacity—matters most to my thesis?
- Is that assumption disclosed by the issuer, independently calculated from disclosed data, or simply a guess?
- What part of the next quarter is already priced into the stock?
- What would make the result economically important even if reported EPS beats or misses?
- Could a provisional settlement, hedge, foreign exchange move or working-capital change reverse the apparent earnings improvement?
- Can the company fund sustaining capital, debt service and obligations if the commodity price falls?
- Am I comparing companies with consistent periods, commodity definitions and non-GAAP reconciliations?
- What evidence after the announcement would confirm or disprove the thesis?
Timing, limitations and responsible use
Recheck the latest filing and investor-relations release immediately before publication or a trade decision. Earnings dates, guidance, commodity prices and operating assumptions can change. The issuer examples here are tied to their stated reporting periods: Hecla’s quarter ended March 31, 2026; Warrior Met Coal’s quarter ended June 30, 2026; Barrick’s 2025 annual information filing and its 2026 assumptions; Newmont’s 2025 Form 10-K risk disclosures; and Coeur Mining’s 2025 Form 10-K discussion of issuer-defined measures.
Those documents support a disciplined checklist, not a universal prediction or a buy-or-sell recommendation. The final decision should reflect your time horizon, risk tolerance, position size, tax situation and ability to absorb a gap move when the market re-prices the stock.
Bottom line
The best pre-earnings check for a materials stock is a company-specific bridge from commodity or product prices to realized revenue, operating costs, free cash flow and balance-sheet resilience. Read the filings, verify settlement and hedge mechanics, test production and costs against guidance, reconcile non-GAAP measures, and decide which expectations are already in the share price. Only then can you judge whether the upcoming report changes your investment thesis.
