Check the exact device configuration—not just its model name—before you buy. Confirm the listed RAM, built-in storage or SSD capacity, whether storage can be expanded, and the final price for that same configuration. Memory-market forecasts point to higher component costs and possible specification cuts, but they do not tell you whether a particular device is good value today.
Why memory shortages matter to device buyers
Memory chips affect two different specifications that are easy to confuse: RAM, which devices use to run apps and tasks, and storage, which holds files, apps, photos, and other data. In a laptop, storage is often an SSD; in a phone, it is usually listed as built-in storage. A shortage can put pressure on both a device’s price and its advertised configuration.
That distinction matters when comparing listings. A device can have one RAM figure and a separate storage figure, and neither should be inferred from the other. A product page may advertise a device family or a starting configuration, while an individual seller’s listing refers to a particular combination of memory, storage, and other included items. The numbers to compare are those attached to the exact configuration for sale.
As of September 30, 2026, TrendForce said suppliers were prioritizing advanced-process capacity for server products, leaving the overall DRAM market undersupplied. It forecast conventional DRAM contract prices rising 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND Flash contract prices rising 15–20%. These are forecasts for component contract prices, not predictions that every consumer laptop or phone will rise by those amounts. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook also said notebook inventories were increasingly reflecting higher component costs in 4Q26, mobile DRAM allocations remained tight, and PC brands were reducing SSD capacities in mainstream models to lower costs.

IDC has attributed the pressure in part to rapid demand for AI infrastructure and memory production capacity shifting toward higher-margin products for AI data centers. IDC expected DRAM supply to grow 16% year over year in 2026 and NAND supply 17%—below historical norms—and said supply challenges could persist through 2026 and likely well into 2027. These are forecasts, not final measured results. IDC’s market update discusses the supply outlook and potential effects on devices.
The practical implication is not that every laptop or phone will be worse, or that all prices will rise by a fixed amount. Rather, buyers may encounter a different RAM or storage configuration at a similar price, a higher price for a comparable configuration, or a mix of both. The analyst reports describe aggregate market conditions and possible vendor responses. They do not establish what is happening to every brand, seller, or listing in your market.
What to verify on the exact listing
RAM: the amount included in that configuration
Find the RAM figure on the listing for the exact SKU, meaning the specific configuration being sold. Do not rely on a model-family page, a product name, or an older review: versions with similar names can have different specifications. IDC says some new phones may have less RAM and storage than comparable prior-year devices at the same or a higher price, and it expects similar configuration reductions in PCs. That describes a possible vendor response, not every new device.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen a listing is vague, check the detailed specification section or the manufacturer’s official specifications for the exact model or configuration. Make sure the RAM number belongs to the item being offered, rather than to a higher-tier version described elsewhere on the page. If the seller’s information and the official specification do not clearly match, treat that as an unresolved detail before comparing prices.
Storage: SSD capacity on laptops, built-in capacity on phones
Check the listed capacity separately from RAM. A laptop listing may show both system RAM and SSD capacity; neither number tells you the other. For a phone, confirm the built-in storage capacity on the specific configuration rather than assuming all versions in a family are the same. TrendForce reports that some PC brands are reducing SSD capacities in mainstream models.
Pay attention to whether a laptop listing says SSD capacity and whether a phone listing gives the built-in storage figure. Compare that figure with the capacity you actually need for your files, apps, and other data over the period you expect to keep the device. The cited market outlooks do not establish a universal storage amount that suits every buyer, so the right comparison is between the exact device specification and your own likely use—not a market-wide minimum.

A common pitfall is comparing a device’s advertised starting price with the price of a higher-capacity version of another model. Those are not equivalent offers. Write down both the RAM and storage for each candidate so that a lower price is not mistaken for better value when it corresponds to a different configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExpandability: confirm it rather than assuming
If you may need more storage later, check the official specifications for the exact model and configuration to see whether storage is expandable. Do not infer upgrade options from a product family name or from a different version of the same device. Expandability was not established for any particular model in the market outlooks cited here.
For a fair comparison, record whether the official specifications confirm an expansion option or whether you could not verify one. Do not treat uncertainty as confirmation. This check is particularly useful when two devices have different built-in capacities, but it should not be used to assume an upgrade is possible unless the exact model documentation says so.
Final price for the same configuration
Compare like with like: the same RAM and storage, seller, new or refurbished condition, warranty, and included accessories. A low starting price may refer to a lower-capacity configuration than the one you need. Aggregate forecasts about component costs are not a live survey of retail offers, so they cannot establish whether a specific listing is fairly priced.
Compare the total price shown for the configuration you intend to buy, not merely the starting price on a family page. Check that the seller, condition, warranty, and included items are also comparable. If one offer is new and another is refurbished, or their warranty terms differ, note that difference rather than presenting the prices as a direct comparison. The supplied market forecasts do not verify current retailer prices, availability, or specific offers.
Seller, condition, and warranty
Before treating two prices as comparable, confirm who is selling each device and whether it is new, refurbished, or used. Record the warranty and the included items as shown in the offer. These details do not change the RAM or storage specification, but they affect whether two offers are genuinely equivalent. No particular retailer listing or warranty was verified in the market research, so check those terms directly with the seller.

How to compare two devices fairly
- Write down each exact configuration. Record the RAM, storage capacity, and model or SKU as shown by the seller—not just the device family name. If the offer does not identify the configuration clearly, verify it before using its price in a comparison.
- Record the total price and terms. Note seller, condition, warranty, and included items. Keep these consistent when comparing offers, or explicitly mark where they differ.
- Check expansion options in official specifications. Mark storage as expandable only if the exact model’s manufacturer specifications confirm it. If you cannot confirm it, leave the point open rather than assuming.
- Judge the configuration against your own workload. Consider the applications you use, operating system, typical files, and how long you intend to keep the device. Market forecasts do not establish a universal minimum RAM or storage capacity.
- Decide whether a replacement is needed now. If your existing device still meets your needs, its condition and the cost of replacement are relevant. Do not delay a necessary replacement solely because of a forecast.
This process keeps the decision grounded in things a buyer can verify. It separates three questions that are easy to blend together: what hardware is actually included, what the offer costs under its stated terms, and whether that configuration suits your own plans. A forecast about memory prices can explain why listings may change, but it cannot answer those questions for a particular device.
| Comparison point | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | Exact RAM and storage for each SKU | Starting configurations and similarly named models can differ. |
| Price and terms | Total price, seller, condition, warranty, included items | A meaningful comparison requires equivalent offers. |
| Upgrade path | Expandable or fixed storage, confirmed in official specifications | Future capacity depends on the exact model, not an assumption. |
| Fit for use | Apps, operating system, workload, and intended ownership period | There is no market-source-backed capacity minimum that fits every buyer. |
Why entry-level devices deserve a closer look
IDC says lower-end devices have less room to absorb rising memory costs and may face specification cuts or higher prices. Treat that as a market-level risk, not a rule that every budget laptop or phone is a poor purchase. Compare the actual configuration and price, and decide whether it meets your needs.
This is a reason to inspect lower-priced configurations carefully, not to dismiss them automatically. Check whether the exact offer provides the RAM and storage you want, then compare it with alternatives on equivalent terms. A low headline price is not enough information if it refers to a different configuration, but a budget product is not necessarily a bad choice simply because it is in the entry-level segment.
Gartner’s February 26, 2026 forecast projected worldwide PC shipments down 10.4% and smartphone shipments down 8.4% in 2026. Gartner also forecast consumer PC prices rising 17% and smartphone prices 13% compared with 2025. IDC’s later 2026 update projected PC shipments down 11.3% and smartphone shipments down 12.9%. These are different publishers’ forecasts made at different times, not observed shipment results or interchangeable estimates. Gartner’s release also quoted analyst Ranjit Atwal forecasting that “The sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” That is a forecast, not a confirmed future event. Gartner’s February 26, 2026 release provides its projections.
Keep the attribution and timing attached to such figures. Gartner’s shipment and price projections are not the same measure as TrendForce’s component contract-price outlook, and IDC’s later shipment forecast differs from Gartner’s. None should be converted into a prediction for the price of the device you are considering. The figures help explain why analysts expect pressure on the market; they do not replace checking current listings.
Should you buy now or keep your current device?
Base the decision on whether your current device still handles your work and whether its condition makes continued use practical. Gartner forecast longer device lifetimes as prices rise, which supports considering whether a replacement can wait; it does not mean every buyer should postpone one. If you need a device now, evaluate current listings by exact configuration and total price rather than trying to predict how the market will move.

No universal evidence-based rule says everyone should buy immediately or wait for prices to fall. The outlooks discuss supply challenges and forecasts through 2026 and potentially into 2027, but forecasts can change and do not specify what a particular product will cost later. If a replacement is necessary, focus on the verified offer in front of you. If your current device still meets your needs, its condition, your planned ownership period, and the cost of replacing it are relevant considerations.

Used or refurbished devices may be alternatives for some buyers, but the cited market analysis does not evaluate any specific offer. Check the condition, seller, warranty, and exact hardware configuration as carefully as you would for a new device. Gartner says some entry-level buyers may choose refurbished or second-hand phones; that is an observation about a possible buyer response, not an endorsement of a particular used listing.
What the forecasts can—and cannot—tell you
Market forecasts describe broad supply, component pricing, or shipment trends. They can explain why vendors may adjust capacity or prices, but they cannot establish the current retail price, availability, or value of a particular laptop or phone. The TrendForce and IDC outlooks cited here are not product tests, and no specific model was evaluated. Use them as context; make the purchase decision from the exact listing, official specifications, and your own needs.
There are several different kinds of figures in the outlooks. TrendForce’s 10–15% DRAM and 15–20% NAND estimates are quarter-over-quarter component contract-price forecasts for 4Q26. IDC’s 16% DRAM and 17% NAND figures are expected year-over-year supply growth for 2026. Gartner’s and IDC’s shipment estimates concern their separate outlooks for device shipments. These measures are not interchangeable, and none is a guarantee of what a consumer will pay for a particular device.
Forecasts also have dates and assumptions. Gartner’s February 2026 projections and IDC’s later 2026 update differ, so report their publisher and date rather than blending them into a single number or presenting either as a final result. The useful takeaway for a buyer remains practical: verify the exact configuration, compare equivalent offers, and decide based on need rather than treating an industry forecast as a personal price quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a laptop or phone have less memory for the same price?
It is possible, but not guaranteed for every device. IDC says some new phones may have lower RAM and storage than comparable prior-year devices at the same or a higher price, and it expects similar configuration reductions in PCs. Check the exact SKU and compare like-for-like prices rather than assuming a whole product family has one specification.

How can I tell whether a listing has the RAM and storage I expect?
Check the exact seller listing for the specific configuration or SKU, then compare its RAM and storage figures with the manufacturer’s official specifications. Do not rely only on the family name, a starting price, or an older review.
Should I buy a laptop or phone now, or wait?
The cited outlooks do not establish a universal answer. Consider whether your current device still meets your needs and whether replacing it can reasonably wait. If you need a device now, compare current offers by exact configuration and total price; forecasts do not predict the future price of a particular listing.
Are entry-level laptops or phones a bad buy during a shortage?
Not automatically. IDC says lower-end devices have less room to absorb rising memory costs and may face higher prices or specification cuts. Treat that as a reason to verify the configuration and compare equivalent offers, not as proof that every budget device is poor value.
Do these forecasts mean consumer device prices will rise by the same percentages?
No. TrendForce’s DRAM and NAND figures are forecasts for component contract prices, not direct forecasts for every retail device. Gartner and IDC also publish separate device-market estimates. These forecasts explain broad market pressure but do not establish a particular seller’s current price or value.
Is a refurbished or used device a reliable way to avoid the shortage?
The cited market analysis does not evaluate any specific used or refurbished offer. If considering one, check its exact configuration, condition, seller, and warranty. Gartner notes that some entry-level buyers may choose refurbished or second-hand phones, but that is not an assessment of any individual listing.
The Bottom Line
Before buying, verify the exact SKU’s RAM and storage, confirm any claimed storage expansion in official specifications, and compare total prices only across equivalent offers and terms. Treat shortage forecasts as market context—not as a guarantee that a particular device will cost more or deliver less. Buy or wait based on your needs, your current device, and the offer you can verify.
