Before buying, verify three things: the listing is for the exact card and condition claimed, the seller and marketplace leave you a practical way to resolve problems, and the card will work in your PC with any warranty actually available to you. A photo, high rating, serial lookup, or low price cannot by itself prove that a card is genuine or working.
The guidance below reflects U.S. Federal Trade Commission advice and examples from manufacturers. Marketplace rules, consumer rights, and warranty terms vary by country, platform, seller, card, and purchase date.
1. Identify the exact card and condition
A GPU family name is not enough to verify a listing. Board-partner cards within the same family can differ in dimensions, power requirements, connectors, cooling, and revision. Ask for the manufacturer, full model name or part number, revision where applicable, condition, and included accessories. Ask whether the listing photos show the exact card, and request clear, current photos of it and its labels. Keep questions and answers in marketplace messages.
Compare the model and revision with the manufacturer’s product page. The U.S. FTC recommends examining multiple photos of the actual item and reading the full listing description, rather than relying on stock imagery or a short title: FTC online shopping guidance.

Read condition terms carefully. New, refurbished, used, open-box, and “as is” can mean materially different things; check the marketplace’s definitions and the seller’s specific description. Photos and serial numbers can help you investigate, but neither establishes authenticity or working condition on its own.
2. Assess the seller and your recourse
Check recent feedback and contact details, and look for answers that are specific and consistent. Ratings and reviews can be misleading, so treat them as clues rather than proof of trustworthiness. Read the current listing and marketplace terms before paying, and find out:

- Who handles a return or dispute: the seller, marketplace, or payment provider.
- What evidence you must provide if the card is not as described.
- Who pays return shipping and whether any conditions apply.
- How long you have to open a claim or request a refund.
Save the listing and seller messages in case you need them later. Protections differ by marketplace, seller, and listing, and may have exclusions or deadlines. The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends checking the seller’s history, contact information, payment safety, and return terms before ordering.

What marketplace seller disclosures do—and do not—tell you
The FTC explains that the INFORM Consumers Act requires covered online marketplaces to disclose contact information for many high-volume third-party sellers of new or unused consumer products and to provide a way for shoppers to report suspicious conduct: FTC explanation of the INFORM Consumers Act. Coverage depends on the law’s criteria. A disclosure is not a guarantee that a particular seller is safe or that a particular card is genuine.

3. Pay through a channel that preserves options
Use the marketplace’s checkout and a payment method with practical dispute protections. The FTC warns that paying outside the platform can cost you marketplace protection, and advises against hard-to-reverse methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency when a seller demands them. See the FTC’s payment advice.

4. Check that the exact model fits your PC
Look up the exact board-partner model and revision, then compare its specifications with your system. MSI’s guidance recommends checking graphics-card and motherboard specifications; its product information includes fields such as interface, power, connectors, and dimensions: MSI graphics-card compatibility guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Case clearance: Compare the card’s length, height, and thickness with available space in your case. Include room for cables and airflow.
- Motherboard interface: Check the card’s interface against your motherboard and confirm that the intended slot is available.
- Power supply: Compare the manufacturer’s recommended PSU capacity with your PSU’s capacity and quality.
- Power connectors: Verify the connector type and number, and whether your PSU has the required native connectors.
- Displays: Check the card’s outputs against the monitors and cables you plan to use.
Specifications are model-specific. For example, GIGABYTE’s product page for the RTX 3080 EAGLE OC 10G revision 1.0 lists a 320 mm length, a 750 W recommended PSU, and two 8-pin power connectors. Those figures apply to that named model and revision, not to every RTX 3080: GIGABYTE RTX 3080 EAGLE OC 10G rev. 1.0 specifications.

5. Verify identity and warranty with the manufacturer
If warranty coverage matters, ask for the card’s serial number and original proof of purchase, then check the manufacturer’s support process for your region and the exact product. MSI provides serial identification and a warranty-status inquiry through its graphics-card support page. For an installed AMD-based card, AMD explains how to identify its manufacturer and model using system information and subsystem vendor and device identifiers: AMD guide to identifying an AMD graphics card. These checks can help identify a product or check status; they do not certify a marketplace listing or establish that a card works.
Do not assume a seller’s claim that “warranty included” means coverage will transfer. Policies vary by manufacturer, model, region, purchase channel, and date. For example, NVIDIA’s cited U.S. GeForce card policy provides a three-year warranty period from purchase for the original purchaser and excludes a person who acquires the product on a used basis: NVIDIA U.S. warranty terms. GIGABYTE describes its graphics-card warranty as limited and local, with regional differences: GIGABYTE graphics-card warranty information. These are examples, not universal rules; check the current terms that apply to the exact card and your location.
6. Compare listings on more than headline price
When you have multiple candidates, compare like with like—ideally the same model and revision. Include total delivered cost, condition, evidence that photos show the actual card, seller information, dispute and return terms, payment method, warranty eligibility, and PC fit. A lower price may come with greater risk or no warranty you can use.

7. Set a walk-away rule
Pause or walk away if a seller refuses current photos or basic model details, pressures you to pay off-platform, will not answer condition questions in writing, or offers a high-value branded card at an implausibly low price without a credible explanation. These are warning signs, not proof of fraud. The FTC notes that unusually low prices on expensive brand-name goods can signal counterfeits and advises reporting suspicious marketplace conduct: FTC online shopping guidance and INFORM Consumers Act guidance. A low price alone does not establish wrongdoing.
If you proceed, preserve the listing and order records, and act within the marketplace’s claim deadlines if the card you receive differs from the description.
