Do not decide from the advertised SSD capacity alone. Before paying, identify the exact laptop configuration, verify whether it has a free internal slot or only a replaceable drive, match the supported interface and physical size, estimate the games you need installed at once, and read the model-specific service and warranty terms. A small included SSD can be perfectly workable when a compatible second drive can be added; it can be a poor fit when the only upgrade is a difficult replacement or when external storage would undermine how you use the laptop.
Why the included SSD capacity is only the starting point
Two laptops in the same product family can have different storage layouts. One configuration may include an empty M.2 socket, while another may use that position for a second drive or omit it entirely. The printed capacity also says nothing about whether the installed drive can be replaced, which interfaces the motherboard accepts, or which physical drive lengths fit.
Game libraries make the distinction important. Dell’s Gaming Laptop Buying Guide 2026 says modern AAA titles can exceed 100 GB each. That is a broad buying-guide statement, not an installation-size figure for every game. Check the actual titles you plan to play, then add space for the operating system, patches, launchers, saves, creative applications and any other files you keep on the laptop. There is no universal SSD capacity that suits every player.
A small drive is therefore a compatibility and usage question, not an automatic deal-breaker. The purchase is safer when you know the expansion path before checkout rather than assuming that a similarly named model has the same internals.

Identify the exact model and configuration first
Use the complete model or machine-type identifier, not just a family name such as a series or screen size. A retailer’s headline may group several processors, graphics options and storage layouts under one listing. The manufacturer’s support page, specification reference and service manual for your exact configuration are the documents that determine what you can install.
Where to find the identifier
- Read the model and type information on the retailer’s specification sheet, the box label or the laptop’s underside.
- Check the firmware or system-information screen if the physical label is unclear.
- Keep the full identifier, including suffixes, region codes and generation markers, when searching the manufacturer’s support site.
What to record from the official specifications
- Included SSD capacity and whether the listing describes one drive or more than one.
- Number of supported storage devices and whether a socket is populated.
- Supported interface, such as the PCIe-based M.2 type named in the specification.
- Permitted M.2 lengths or other physical formats.
- Whether the factory drive is removable and whether a replacement requires transferring the operating system.
MSI’s storage-specification guidance specifically directs buyers to check the notebook’s supported storage specifications before purchasing an SSD. Treat that instruction as model-specific: a specification for one configuration is not proof about another.
Use the service manual as a second confirmation
The specification page tells you what is supported; the service manual shows how the chassis is arranged. Look for an illustration or procedure that identifies the existing drive, an unoccupied socket, its retaining screw and any shield or bracket. If the manual covers multiple configurations, confirm which diagram matches your machine rather than assuming every pictured component is installed.

Answer this from the exact model documentation, not from photographs of a related laptop. A second slot is useful only when it is physically present and electrically supported in your configuration. The absence of a slot does not make the laptop unusable, but it changes the cost and effort of expanding it.

Questions to ask when the listing is vague
- Is the advertised capacity one physical SSD or a combination of drives?
- Is the second connector populated, empty, disabled or absent on this exact configuration?
- Does the manufacturer specify a maximum supported capacity, or only a drive type and size?
- Are the retaining screw, bracket and thermal pad included for an additional drive?
- Does the warranty or service policy describe customer-installed storage?
A forum post may phrase the issue as “How many SSD slots do I have? And what’s the maximum storage I can upgrade to?” (example wording). Use that as a checklist of questions, not as evidence about your particular laptop or about how common the configuration is.
Match the interface and physical dimensions
“M.2” identifies a compact card shape, not one universal drive. Drives with the same-looking connector can use different interfaces, and a card can be too long or too short for the mounting point. Confirm both the interface named by the laptop’s documentation and the supported length before ordering.

MSI lists several M.2 lengths, including 2242, 2260 and 2280, and directs owners to the notebook’s supported specifications. Lenovo explains that labels such as 2242 and 2280 describe the drive’s width and length. The label on a drive is therefore a fit check, not a guarantee that it will work in every M.2 socket. Read the exact size requirement in the service or specification document.
Check the interface, keying and generation requirements
- Match the interface stated for the slot (for example, an M.2 PCIe specification) rather than buying solely on the M.2 name.
- Check the connector key or compatibility note if the manufacturer lists one.
- Confirm whether the slot supports the drive type you are considering and whether a supplied heat spreader or shield will clear the chassis.
- Do not treat a faster advertised drive as an upgrade if the laptop does not support that interface; compatibility comes before headline speed.
If the documentation does not state the interface or length, pause the purchase. A seller’s generic “M.2 SSD” description is not enough to establish fit.
Estimate the library you actually want installed
Make a short inventory before comparing laptop prices. Write down the games you expect to keep installed, their current installation sizes in the launchers, and the other software and files that must remain on the internal drive. Installation sizes change with patches and optional texture packs, so use the figures shown for your own titles rather than an average borrowed from a different library.

Do not convert Dell’s “can exceed 100 GB each” statement into a rule that every AAA title is 100 GB or that every buyer needs a particular capacity. Use it as a warning to inspect your own library. If your inventory already approaches the included drive’s usable space, treat expansion as part of the laptop’s purchase decision.
A simple capacity worksheet
- Add the current installation sizes of the games you want available without downloading them again.
- Add the operating system, launchers, applications and files that must stay internal.
- Add a practical allowance for updates and temporary work space.
- Compare that total with the capacity stated for the exact laptop configuration, then decide whether the documented internal or external path is convenient enough.
This worksheet produces a personal requirement rather than a universal recommendation. Revisit it if your library, recording habits or application needs change.
Compare the three realistic expansion paths

There is no single “best” path independent of the laptop. A second internal slot is usually the least disruptive option when it is documented and accessible; a replacement is the relevant comparison for a one-slot design; external storage is a convenience trade-off rather than proof that internal compatibility does not matter.
Check service instructions and warranty terms before opening the chassis
Read the manufacturer’s procedure for the exact model before buying tools or a drive. MSI’s M.2 PCIe SSD upgrade guidance warns that mechanical damage caused during the described upgrade actions may not be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. That is not the same as saying every upgrade voids coverage, and it is not a promise that accidental damage will be covered. Confirm the terms that apply in your country and configuration.
Pre-installation checklist
- Back up documents, game saves and any recovery keys before removing a panel or drive.
- Download the correct service instructions and note screw locations; screws and panels may differ by model.
- Confirm the replacement or added drive’s interface and length against the official specification one more time.
- Check whether the procedure requires disconnecting the battery, removing a shield or transferring a thermal pad.
- Decide in advance whether you will clone the existing installation or perform a clean operating-system installation.
- Use suitable precision tools and stop if a panel, connector or screw resists; forcing it can create the mechanical damage the warranty warning addresses.
After the hardware is installed
- Reassemble the laptop exactly as the service instructions show and reconnect any cable or shield you removed.
- Confirm that the firmware detects the drive before attempting to format it.
- In the operating system’s disk-management utility, initialize and format a newly added empty drive only after verifying that it is the new device.
- Restore or reinstall games to the intended volume and check that the launcher recognizes the library.
- Keep the original drive untouched until the new installation or clone has booted successfully if you replaced it.
What to verify on the day you buy
- Exact identifier: Save the full model and configuration code from the listing.
- Official storage layout: Find the manufacturer’s specification or support page for that identifier.
- Slot status: Confirm whether a second socket is present and free, or whether the existing drive is replaceable.
- Drive fit: Match the documented interface, connector details and M.2 length.
- Capacity plan: Compare your game-and-application inventory with the included capacity and the realistic expansion path.
- Installation effort: Read the service procedure, identify required hardware and decide whether you are comfortable performing it.
- Warranty: Read the applicable terms for customer upgrades and accidental mechanical damage.
- Fallback: If internal support is uncertain, decide whether external storage or rotating installs would genuinely work for your connection and travel habits.
If a seller cannot answer these points, treat the storage configuration as unverified rather than assuming the most favorable layout. Ask for the exact service-manual page or a written confirmation tied to the model code.

Buy the small-SSD laptop when its exact documentation gives you a storage path that matches your library and your tolerance for installation work. Prefer the model with a documented free internal slot when you want to keep the factory installation and maintain a permanent library. Consider a one-slot model only when you have allowed for a replacement and migration, or when rotating games and using external storage fits your routine. If the slot count, interface, dimensions or warranty terms remain unclear, the uncertainty is itself a reason to delay payment or choose a better-documented configuration.
