The Framework Laptop 12 DIY Edition is only a good value when you price and configure the complete computer, not just the bare laptop. Before ordering, verify whether your cart contains the 2026 Core Series 3 model or a 2025 13th Gen configuration, then check memory, an M.2 2230 SSD, Expansion Cards, operating system, charger, stylus, keyboard options and the time needed to assemble it. The 12.2-inch convertible is unusually repairable and customizable, but its compact size, integrated graphics and modular-port costs may not suit every workload.
The short answer: verify these seven things first
- Generation and processor: make sure the cart identifies the 2026 Core Series 3 model or the 2025 13th Gen model available in your region. Their memory guidance and included items differ.
- A complete bill of materials: the DIY listing has no preinstalled operating system, and memory, storage, Expansion Cards, a power adapter and a stylus may be separate selections.
- Memory compatibility: use the processor generation and Framework’s validated-module list rather than assuming any DDR5 SO-DIMM will run at its advertised speed.
- Storage format: the laptop has one M.2 2230 NVMe slot. A common 2280 SSD will not fit that slot.
- Port layout: there are four Expansion Card positions, but only the upper two expose Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort Alt Mode. Choose cards for the connectors you actually use.
- Setup and software: plan for memory, SSD and Wi-Fi installation before installing Windows, or verify current Linux kernel and distribution compatibility.
- Total configured cost: compare the finished configuration, accessories and any separately purchased parts with similarly sized laptops, not the starting DIY price.
Framework describes its philosophy as “You don’t own it until you can repair it.” That is a statement of the company’s design position, not a guarantee of a particular service life, future parts availability or savings compared with replacing a laptop.
Confirm which Laptop 12 generation you are buying
The current product information combines more than one generation. Read the processor name and the configuration heading in your cart before applying any specification to your purchase.
| Detail | 2026 Core Series 3 listing | 2025 13th Gen listing |
|---|---|---|
| Processor options shown | Core 3 304, Core 5 320 and Core 7 350 | 13th Gen Intel options shown separately on the product page |
| Memory guidance | One SO-DIMM slot; product specifications list up to 64 GB DDR5-6400, with a configuration option up to 48 GB DDR5-5600 | The quick-start guide lists up to 48 GB DDR5-5200 for the 13th Gen variant |
| How to resolve conflicting option text | Use the exact processor selection, the current product-page option text and Framework’s validated memory list for the model in your cart | |
| Accessories and box contents | Do not assume the contents are shared between generations; the product page displays different configuration details | |
The memory figures above are not interchangeable. The guide’s 13th Gen limit must not be applied to a Core Series 3 system, and the Core Series 3 figures must not be used to describe the older model. If your region shows both versions, capture the exact model name and processor before ordering components.

Price the computer you will actually use
A DIY Edition can look inexpensive because the base listing may exclude parts required for first boot. Treat the Framework configurator as a parts list and mark every item as included, selected, optional or still to be purchased.
| Part or service | What the current information says | What to verify in your cart |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | No operating system is preinstalled on the listed DIY configuration | Whether you are obtaining a Windows license and installer or preparing a supported Linux installation |
| Memory | Configurable or bring-your-own; one SO-DIMM slot | Capacity, module compatibility and operating speed for your selected generation |
| Internal storage | Configurable up to 2 TB or bring-your-own; one M.2 2230 NVMe slot | That an SSD is selected or that you have a compatible 2230 drive ready |
| Expansion Cards | Four user-selectable positions; cards are selected separately | Video, USB-A, Ethernet, SD/MicroSD and storage-card needs |
| Power adapter | The 60W USB-C adapter is listed as optional for the Core Series 3 DIY edition | Whether an adapter is in the box; otherwise budget for a suitable USB-C charger |
| Stylus | Purchased separately; the display supports MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 | Whether pen input matters and which compatible protocol your chosen pen uses |
| Keyboard and biometrics | Keyboard/backlighting and a fingerprint reader can be configuration choices | Layout, backlight and fingerprint-reader selection before checkout |
| Assembly | Framework labels the DIY assembly difficulty moderate | Whether you have a clean work area and time to follow the 18-step guide |
There is no single universal “DIY total.” A buyer who already owns a compatible SO-DIMM, 2230 SSD, USB-C charger and operating-system installer will spend differently from a buyer who adds every part to the order. Record the configured subtotal, shipping or tax shown for your region, and the cost of anything sourced separately.
Check whether the compact hardware fits your work
The 2026 Core Series 3 product page describes a 12.2-inch 16:10 touchscreen convertible with a 1,920×1,200 resolution, 60 Hz refresh rate, brightness greater than 400 nits and 50% NTSC gamut. It lists a 50 Wh battery, a 1.3 kg weight and integrated Intel graphics. These are vendor specifications rather than independent benchmark results.

Screen and convertible use
The 16:10 aspect ratio gives more vertical space than a traditional 16:9 panel, which helps documents and web pages. The 60 Hz refresh rate is ordinary for office work and pen input but is not a high-refresh gaming specification. A 50% NTSC gamut is a limitation for color-critical photography, video or design work; check the requirements of your application rather than assuming that a touchscreen is suitable for professional color grading. The hinge and touch layer make tablet-style use possible, but a small 12.2-inch canvas may feel cramped for side-by-side desktop work.
Performance expectations
All listed processors use integrated Intel graphics. That is appropriate for general productivity, browsing, coding, media playback and light creative work, but it does not provide the dedicated graphics headroom expected for demanding 3D rendering or modern games. Choose the processor and memory capacity for the applications you run, not simply the highest model name. No independent benchmark for the 2026 Core Series 3 configuration is established here.

Portability and endurance
At 1.3 kg, the machine is travel-friendly, while the 50 Wh battery is a finite capacity that will be affected by screen brightness, wireless activity, workload and power settings. Do not convert the capacity into a promised runtime. Carrying a USB-C charger is especially important if the adapter is not included in your configuration.
Match memory to the exact processor generation
The 2026 specification lists one SO-DIMM slot supporting up to 64 GB of DDR5-6400. It also shows a configuration choice up to 48 GB of DDR5-5600. Framework’s quick-start guide separately describes up to 64 GB DDR5-6400 for Core Series 3 and up to 48 GB DDR5-5200 for 13th Gen Intel. Because those option descriptions are not identical, verify the exact module and expected operating speed for the product selected.

- Open Framework’s validated memory list for that model.
- Choose a supported SO-DIMM capacity and specification; do not rely only on a retailer’s generic “DDR5 laptop memory” label.
- If bringing memory from another computer, confirm its physical SO-DIMM format, capacity and electrical specification before opening the laptop.
- After installation, check the firmware or operating system’s reported capacity and speed. A lower displayed speed can indicate a platform limit rather than a defective module.
Because there is one slot, replacing the installed module is the upgrade path; there is no second slot for adding a matching stick later. Buy the capacity you expect to need for the laptop’s service life, while staying within the limit for your generation.
Buy the right SSD, not merely a large one
The listed internal interface is a single M.2 2230 NVMe slot. The 2230 designation describes a much shorter drive than the 2280 SSD used in many larger laptops. Framework offers storage choices up to 2 TB or allows you to bring your own.
- Confirm the drive is an NVMe SSD in the M.2 2230 form factor.
- Check the capacity against your operating-system, application and project needs; the laptop has only one internal slot.
- If you are reusing a drive, back up its data and confirm that its physical keying and firmware are suitable for the system.
- Have installation media ready before removing the factory packaging, because a DIY configuration without an SSD cannot boot into an operating system.
A larger external drive or Expansion Card can supplement storage, but it does not change the one internal-slot limitation.

Design the four Expansion Card positions around your peripherals
The Laptop 12 provides four user-selectable Expansion Card slots. Listed card types include USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, 250 GB or 1 TB storage cards, MicroSD and SD. The positions are not identical in capability.
| Position group | Capabilities listed by Framework | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Upper left and upper right | Thunderbolt 4, USB-C, USB Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode | Reserve these positions for Thunderbolt devices, USB-C displays or docks, and video output that requires DisplayPort Alt Mode |
| Lower left and lower right | USB 3.2 Gen 2 and USB Power Delivery | Use these for compatible USB peripherals and charging; do not assume they provide Thunderbolt 4 or DisplayPort Alt Mode |
Choose cards by a real connection list
- For a USB-A keyboard, mouse, flash drive or older controller, include a USB-A card.
- For a monitor, select HDMI or DisplayPort as appropriate, and place video-dependent cards in a position whose capabilities support your display.
- For wired networking, include Ethernet rather than relying on a dongle.
- For camera media, choose SD or MicroSD according to the card format you use.
- For removable bulk storage, compare a storage Expansion Card with an external SSD; the card occupies one of the four positions and has its own capacity.
Count the cards in the checkout summary. A laptop with four empty positions is not equivalent to one configured with the four connectors your desk requires.
Plan the operating system before assembly
The listed DIY configuration has no preinstalled operating system. Framework’s installation instructions call for installing memory, storage and Wi-Fi before installing Windows 11 Home or Pro. Windows buyers therefore need an appropriate license or product key, installation media and another computer if they must create a bootable installer.
Windows checklist
- Prepare a Windows 11 Home or Pro installer on a USB drive.
- Install the SO-DIMM, M.2 2230 SSD and Wi-Fi module as directed by the setup guide.
- Connect the charger, power on and enter the firmware boot menu if the USB installer does not start automatically.
- Install Windows to the internal NVMe drive, then apply Framework-provided drivers and firmware updates for your exact generation.
- Verify the keyboard, touch, rotation, audio, wireless networking, Expansion Cards and fingerprint reader, if selected.
Linux checklist
Linux users should check Framework’s current distribution and kernel compatibility information for the distribution they intend to run. The current product information says its recommended distributions are compatible with kernel 7.1 and newer. Compatibility can change as distributions and firmware evolve, so verify it immediately before purchase and again when creating installation media. Test suspend, touchscreen rotation, pen input, Wi-Fi, audio and external displays rather than assuming that a successful installation means every convertible feature works perfectly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not overlook the charger and stylus
The 60W USB-C power adapter is optional for the Core Series 3 DIY edition. Confirm whether it is in your box contents; if not, select a USB-C Power Delivery charger that meets the laptop’s requirements and add its cost to the configuration.

The stylus is listed as a separate purchase. The panel supports MPP 2.0 and USI 2.0 protocols, so select a pen that explicitly supports one of those standards. Protocol compatibility does not mean every pen has the same buttons, pressure levels, tilt behavior or software features. If you will use the laptop mainly as a conventional notebook, skipping a stylus avoids an unnecessary purchase; if handwritten notes or drawing are central, include one in the initial budget.
Understand what repairability does—and does not—promise
Framework provides step-by-step repair and upgrade guides, a Marketplace for documented modules and replacement parts, and a DIY setup guide. Those materials establish that owners can assemble and replace supported components using the published procedures. They do not establish a guaranteed repair cost, guaranteed parts availability years from now, a guaranteed service life or a guaranteed saving over buying another laptop.
DIY work still has practical risks: a lost screw, a damaged connector, an incorrectly seated memory module or a stripped fastener can delay setup. Work on a clean, well-lit surface, keep removed screws organized, disconnect power when instructed and stop if a connector does not release as shown in the guide. If you do not want to install parts or troubleshoot firmware and drivers, the convenience premium of a ready-to-use laptop may outweigh the modular design.
Use independent reviews with the correct model qualification
RTINGS describes the Laptop 12 as a niche option for people who value maintaining and upgrading a small, flexible machine. Its review identifies repairability and customization as compelling, while noting tradeoffs involving performance, display, battery life, chassis feel and value compared with mainstream alternatives. That review covers the 2025 version, not the 2026 Core Series 3 processor configuration. Treat it as context about the product family and design tradeoffs, not as a measured test of the processor in your cart.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a purchase decision, separate three kinds of evidence: Framework’s current specifications for dimensions and interfaces; the setup guide’s installation and compatibility instructions; and independent testing of the specific generation you plan to buy. Do not transfer battery-runtime, benchmark or display conclusions from the 2025 review to the 2026 model without a test of that newer configuration.
Run this cart verification checklist
- Model: the cart clearly identifies 2026 Core Series 3 or 2025 13th Gen.
- CPU: the selected Core 3 304, Core 5 320 or Core 7 350—or the exact 13th Gen option—is recorded.
- Memory: capacity and speed match the generation-specific validated list.
- SSD: an M.2 2230 NVMe drive is included, or a compatible drive is ready.
- Expansion Cards: all four positions provide the video, USB-A, networking and card-reader connections you need, with video cards placed where their capabilities are supported.
- Power: a 60W USB-C adapter is included or separately budgeted.
- Stylus: included only if the cart says so; otherwise add a compatible MPP 2.0 or USI 2.0 pen if required.
- Operating system: Windows licensing and installation media, or a verified Linux distribution and kernel plan, are ready.
- Input features: keyboard layout, backlighting and optional fingerprint reader are correct.
- Tools and time: you can follow the moderate-difficulty, 18-step assembly process and allow the manufacturer’s estimated 10–20 minutes, recognizing that troubleshooting can take longer.
- Final comparison: compare the fully configured total with compact alternatives after adding every required component and accessory.
Who should buy the DIY Edition?
It makes sense when
- You specifically want a small convertible with user-replaceable documented components.
- You value choosing ports individually instead of carrying a permanent collection of dongles.
- You are comfortable installing memory, storage and Wi-Fi and maintaining the machine over time.
- Your work is primarily productivity, coding, study, media and other integrated-graphics workloads.
- You will use the touchscreen, tablet hinge or pen support enough to justify the 12.2-inch format.
Choose another configuration or class of laptop when
- You need maximum graphics or sustained performance for demanding 3D, gaming or workstation applications.
- You require a wide-gamut display for color-critical production.
- You want a ready-to-use computer with an operating system and charger already included.
- You need a larger screen, multiple internal drives or memory expansion beyond the one-slot limit.
- The complete DIY total is higher than a conventional compact laptop that already meets your performance and port requirements.
Final buying decision
Buy the Framework Laptop 12 DIY Edition when its repairable, convertible design and deliberate port selection solve problems you actually have. The safest order is to identify the generation, build a complete parts list, validate memory and SSD compatibility, assign each Expansion Card to a real peripheral, and confirm the OS, charger and stylus status before paying. If those checks produce a total and setup effort you accept, the modular design is a defensible reason to choose it; if not, the DIY label alone is not a reason to accept weaker performance, display limitations or a higher finished cost.
