A large discount is not proof of a good deal. Before buying clothing, footwear, accessories, beauty items or other lifestyle products, verify the exact item and its total cost, the seller, the condition and authenticity, the reviews, the sale-specific return policy, the delivery promise and the payment protections. Save the offer and your order records before you pay.
Consumer law and card-dispute rights depend on where you live and how you pay. The checks below apply broadly, while US and UK rules are identified where they differ.
The seven checks to make before you click Buy
- Match the exact product and variant: model, colour, size, material, edition and condition.
- Calculate the all-in price: item cost plus delivery, handling, taxes and other fees.
- Identify the seller: confirm contact details, terms, reputation and marketplace responsibility.
- Test the listing’s credibility: inspect photos, description, authenticity clues and seller answers.
- Read reviews critically: look for variant-specific, detailed feedback from identifiable review histories.
- Read the return policy before payment: deadline, shipping cost, fees, exclusions and remedy.
- Protect the transaction: check delivery promises, use a safer payment method where available and keep records.
A price-comparison result can help you find alternatives, but it does not establish that a claimed “was” price is genuine. A percentage-off badge alone cannot prove a saving.
1. Compare the exact offer, not just the headline discount
Open the product page at each seller and verify that you are comparing the same item. Fashion listings often use similar names for different seasons, fabrics, cuts or sizes. A lifestyle product may have regional editions, different accessories or a refurbished version that looks identical in a thumbnail.

Build an all-in price
Write down the amount you would actually pay at checkout. Include:
- the item price after the promotion;
- standard or expedited delivery;
- handling, service or marketplace fees;
- sales tax, VAT, customs duty or other charges shown for your destination; and
- any required add-on, minimum order or membership condition.
Compare like with like: the same size and colour, condition, included components, shipping speed and destination. The cheapest listing can become more expensive after delivery or import charges. The US Federal Trade Commission’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking the full description and terms, while the UK Competition and Markets Authority advises checking multiple retailers and verifying the retailer’s own offer.
Do not treat a “was” price as verified history
Retailers may display a former price, recommended price or comparison price. The practical guidance available for this topic does not establish a universal test for whether every former price reflects a genuine historic sale. Treat the number as a claim to investigate, not as evidence by itself. Check the same item at other sellers and, when available, look at a reputable price-history record. A comparison site’s ordering can be influenced by paid placement, so read how results are ranked and confirm the price on the seller’s page. The CMA also cautions that AI-generated comparisons should be checked against retailer information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecord the terms attached to the promotion
Note the end date or stock condition, coupon restrictions, excluded colours or sizes, minimum spend, member-only requirement and whether the promotion can be combined with another offer. Save a screenshot or PDF of the product page showing the price and terms; pages can change after checkout.
2. Check who is selling the item
A familiar marketplace is not the same as a verified individual seller. On a marketplace, find the seller’s legal or trading name, contact method, location where shown, dispatch location, shipping fees, return rules and the platform’s refund or dispute process. Claim deadlines and protections vary by platform, so identify them before ordering.

Research an unfamiliar seller
Search the seller’s name with words such as “review,” “complaint” or “scam.” Read results from more than one source and check whether the contact details on the listing match the seller’s own site and payment page. A marketplace listing alone does not verify the seller, the item’s condition, authenticity or the buyer protection available for that particular transaction.
Inspect the listing rather than trusting stock imagery
- Determine whether photographs show the actual item or generic manufacturer images.
- Look for consistent views of labels, serial or style numbers, stitching, packaging and included accessories.
- Read whether the item is new, used, refurbished, vintage, “as is,” sample stock or close-out.
- Check measurements and material details instead of relying on a model name.
- Watch for contradictory descriptions, copied text, implausible specifications or a price far below other sellers.
The FTC warns that an expensive brand-name product offered at an unusually low price could be counterfeit or stolen. That warning does not prove that any particular listing is fraudulent, but it is a reason to seek stronger evidence and use a payment method with dispute options.

Ask questions in writing
If the answer affects your decision, message the seller before buying: ask about measurements, defects, provenance, included parts, authenticity documentation or dispatch date. Keep the reply with your order records. A seller who avoids a specific question, pressures you to pay outside the platform or changes the terms in private messages is a high-risk choice.
3. Read fashion and lifestyle reviews critically
Start with reviews for the exact product and variant. A review for a different colour, size, generation or bundle may not describe what you will receive. Look across several independent sites and consider who wrote each review and the reviewer’s history.
Prefer concrete evidence to star averages
Useful reviews explain fit, measurements, fabric feel, colour accuracy, durability, packaging, defects, battery or feature performance and the circumstances of use. For clothing, compare the reviewer’s stated height, measurements and chosen size when those details are available. For cosmetics or personal-care products, note skin or hair type and any stated reaction. For home or travel goods, look for capacity, dimensions and real-world wear.

Do not rely on an aggregate star rating alone. The FTC says ratings and reviews can be fake or misleading, and it may not be clear when a reviewer received an incentive. Sudden clusters of near-identical praise, vague wording, reviews posted in a short period or comments that describe a different product are warning signs. This reading method improves your assessment; it cannot guarantee that a review or item is authentic.

Find the policy that applies to the exact sale or clearance item, not only the store’s general policy. Confirm the following:
- the number of days after delivery or purchase to start a return;
- whether the item must be unworn, unused, sealed, tagged or in original packaging;
- who pays return postage and whether international returns are accepted;
- restocking, handling or other deductions;
- exclusions for underwear, swimwear, pierced jewellery, cosmetics, personalised goods or hygiene-sealed products;
- whether the remedy is a refund, exchange, credit or replacement; and
- the procedure and address for requesting the return.
Sale policies can differ from full-price policies
The FTC notes that sellers may use different return policies for sale and clearance products. Save the policy displayed when you order and follow its notification and packaging instructions. If the seller promises a particular remedy in writing, retain that message.
UK rights are jurisdiction-specific
UK government guidance states: “Customers have exactly the same rights to refunds when they buy items in a sale as when they buy them at full price.” Online cancellation rights can also apply in the UK, subject to conditions and exceptions. Those statutory rights are not the same as a retailer’s voluntary change-of-mind policy, and they should not be generalized to other countries. Read the UK government guidance for the applicable details and exceptions.
5. Check delivery promises and keep a complete record
Before paying, identify when the seller says the item will ship and when it should arrive. Distinguish processing time from transit time, and check whether the date changes for your address, size or colour. Save the product page, promotion, receipt, order confirmation, tracking details, return policy and every message with the seller or marketplace.

US shipping rule described by the FTC
For US purchases, the FTC says a seller must ship within the time advertised. If no shipping time is promised, the rule it describes generally requires shipment within 30 days after the seller receives the order information and payment or authorization. This is US guidance, not a worldwide delivery deadline. If the seller misses the promised date, contact it promptly and keep the response. The FTC’s consumer alert on online shopping problems explains further steps.
What to save before the page changes
- a screenshot showing the item, variant, price and discount terms;
- the seller identity and marketplace listing URL;
- delivery estimate and shipping method;
- the return and refund policy;
- your payment confirmation and order number; and
- photos of the parcel, labels and item if it arrives damaged, incomplete or materially different.
6. Choose a payment method with appropriate protection
For US shoppers, FTC guidance generally favors credit cards where possible because they provide legal protections and can allow a charge dispute in some circumstances. Actual remedies depend on the card network, issuer, transaction and evidence. Debit-card, buy-now-pay-later, payment-app and bank-transfer protections differ, so check the provider’s process and deadlines before relying on them.
Avoid pressured or irreversible payment requests
The FTC advises not buying from a seller who insists on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or cryptocurrency. These methods can be difficult to reverse, particularly when a seller is outside your jurisdiction. Never move a marketplace transaction to an unrelated payment link merely because the seller offers a small extra discount.
Use a dispute process methodically
- Contact the seller through the channel shown in the order record and state the problem clearly.
- Save the seller’s response, promised remedy and any tracking evidence.
- Escalate through the marketplace’s process before its deadline, when applicable.
- For a US credit-card purchase that did not arrive, follow the card issuer’s dispute procedure and the timing in your account agreement.
7. Consider privacy when using shopping apps
Shopping apps may collect contact and purchase information and may use location data. Read the app’s privacy information and review device permissions if that collection matters to you. You can often deny location access, limit notifications or shop through a browser instead, but check whether changing a permission affects a feature you need. Privacy settings do not verify a seller or improve a return policy; they are a separate part of the buying decision.

Choose the offer with the strongest combination of price, evidence, delivery reliability and workable returns. A lower total is not a bargain if you cannot verify what will arrive or recover money when the seller fails to perform.
Fit and measurements: a useful but limited check
A flexible sewing measuring tape can help you compare your body or an existing garment with a listing’s size chart. Measure on a flat surface or according to the seller’s instructions, record the units and compare the chart for the exact product. Measurements reduce guesswork but cannot guarantee fit: cut, stretch, fabric weight, manufacturing tolerances and personal preference still matter. Do not buy a particular tape or brand on the assumption that it is endorsed by a consumer authority.
Red flags that justify walking away
- The seller will not provide a physical or usable contact method.
- The listing uses only stock photos for a supposedly unique, used or vintage item.
- The description changes between pages or omits material, size, condition or included parts.
- The discount is extreme compared with every other seller and there is no credible explanation.
- Reviews are repetitive, unrelated to the variant or concentrated in a suspicious burst.
- The return policy is missing, contradictory or visible only after payment.
- The seller pressures you to leave the marketplace or use an irreversible payment.
- Delivery dates, tracking claims or customs responsibilities are unclear.
One warning sign may have an innocent explanation; several together make the risk difficult to justify. Pause, ask a precise question and look for a different seller rather than allowing a countdown timer to make the decision.

What to do when the purchase goes wrong
The item is late or never arrives
Check the promised date and tracking, then contact the seller in writing. If no delivery time was promised for a US order, the FTC guidance describes a 30-day shipping requirement. Escalate through the marketplace or payment provider within its stated deadline, and retain proof of the promised date and your contact attempts.
The item is counterfeit, damaged or not as described
Do not alter, wear or discard it. Photograph the packaging and discrepancies, preserve labels and messages, and request the remedy stated in the policy. Use the marketplace and payment dispute routes before their deadlines. A low price does not remove your need to document the mismatch.
The seller refuses a valid return
Quote the applicable policy and the order date, state the remedy you are requesting and ask for return instructions. If the seller still refuses, use the platform’s formal process or payment dispute channel. Statutory rights differ by country; do not assume a rule described for the UK or US applies where you live.
One dated warning worth keeping in perspective
The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam in 2022. That is a historical count of reports for 2022, published in 2023—not a current scam rate or a percentage of all purchases. It shows why seller verification, records and payment protections matter, but it does not label every discounted listing as fraudulent.

Final pre-payment checklist
- I matched the exact item, variant, condition and included components.
- I calculated the delivered total for my address, including taxes and fees.
- I checked the seller’s identity, contact details and marketplace obligations.
- I inspected actual-item evidence and asked any important question in writing.
- I read detailed reviews for the same variant across more than one source.
- I know the sale return deadline, exclusions, cost and remedy.
- I recorded the shipping promise and saved the offer and policies.
- I selected a payment method whose protections and dispute deadline I understand.
- I reviewed app permissions if shopping through a mobile app.
If any answer is “no,” the sensible next step is to pause the purchase, obtain the missing information or choose a listing with clearer terms. A major sale creates urgency; these checks restore the information needed to decide whether the offer is actually worth the risk.
