Start with the games you want to play: a handheld with two screens is not automatically capable of running Nintendo 3DS games. Check DS and 3DS support separately, then confirm both displays work as needed, the lower screen supports touch, emulator setup is manageable, and the device’s controls, hinge, battery evidence, and size suit you.
Does it support the games you want to play?
Decide whether you need Nintendo DS games only or want Nintendo 3DS games as well. Dual screens and a clamshell design reproduce part of the hardware layout; they do not establish that the processor can run a particular system or game. Specialist comparisons describe some lower-cost dual-screen handhelds as DS-oriented, while stronger hardware is the dividing factor for 3DS use. These are comparison-source assessments, not independent tests of every game or configuration. Lost In Consoles and Held Games offer model comparisons; verify the exact model revision, software, and firmware before buying.
Make a short list of the games that matter to you, then look for model-specific evidence that they run acceptably. A chipset name alone is not a compatibility guarantee. If 3DS performance is essential, do not infer it from a device’s two-screen layout or from DS performance.
Are both screens and the touch input suitable?
Check the size, aspect ratio, position, and usability of each panel, not just the number of screens. Confirm that the lower display is actually touch-capable if your games require touch input. Nintendo’s 3DS family reference identifies the lower screen as a touchscreen; modern handhelds can use capacitive touch, which differs from the resistive technology used by original DS and 3DS hardware. - Check whether the lower panel accepts touch and whether touch works in the intended emulator.
- If you plan to use a stylus, confirm that its tip is compatible with the device’s screen. A stylus made for an original resistive DS or 3DS screen may not work correctly on a capacitive panel.
- Look for usable screen dimensions and aspect ratios for the games you care about; two panels do not necessarily reproduce the original proportions.
How much emulator and display setup will it take?
On Android handhelds, the operating system may identify one panel as the primary display and the other as an external display. The emulator may need its screens assigned correctly, so a two-panel device can still require configuration before games display as intended. Do the controls, hinge, and size fit your use?
Try to assess the device as a handheld, not only as an emulator screen. Button placement, grip, weight, and closed dimensions affect comfort during longer sessions and travel. If you can, check the controls in person or use credible reports that address your hand size and intended games.

The hinge is a mechanical part that will be opened and closed repeatedly. Inspect construction details and read the warranty, return terms, and credible long-term owner reports. A buying comparison recommends considering hinge or slider durability, but no comparative failure-rate figures for current models are established in the sources cited here. What can battery figures actually tell you?
Battery capacity in mAh is not a runtime estimate. For a meaningful comparison, look for playtime reports on the exact model and a workload like yours; screen brightness, game, and settings can affect results. AYANEO’s August 18, 2025 announcement lists an 8,000mAh battery for Pocket DS, but the cited announcement does not provide a directly comparable runtime figure. AYANEO’s announcement is a manufacturer specification, not an independent battery test.

Historical Nintendo figures are useful only as context for original hardware, not as predictions for current Android handhelds. Nintendo’s 2014 comparison lists approximate battery life for original 3DS as 3.5–5.5 hours playing 3DS games and 5–9 hours playing DS games; for 3DS XL, 3–5 hours and 5–8 hours, respectively; and for New 3DS XL, 3.5–6.5 hours and 6–10 hours, respectively. Nintendo’s comparison document contains those historical estimates.

Use this checklist before you buy
- Game library: Confirm support for the particular DS or 3DS games you want; do not use screen count as a proxy for performance.
- Displays: Verify that both panels are usable, with suitable sizes and aspect ratios.
- Touch and stylus: Confirm lower-screen touch support and stylus compatibility for the panel technology.
- Setup: Check how Android and your chosen emulator map the screens, and how much configuration is required.
- Performance: Prefer evidence for the exact model and target games over assumptions based on chipset branding.
- Build and fit: Review hinge construction, warranty and return terms, closed size, weight, grip, and button placement.
- Battery: Seek runtime reports for the exact model and workload rather than converting mAh into assumed playtime.
- Total cost: Compare current price with shipping, storage, accessories, and warranty, accounting for retailer and regional differences.
