Before paying for a discounted iPhone, confirm that it can be activated and used with your carrier, find out what warranty coverage actually remains, and understand the seller’s return terms. Then check the phone’s condition, battery health, and repair history while you still have time to return it. These checks matter whether the phone is used or refurbished; the seller’s specific listing and policies determine what you are buying.
Start with the return policy
Read the seller’s return terms before you pay. Confirm the return deadline, which reasons qualify, how to send the phone back, and who pays return shipping. Apple’s guidance for buying a preowned iPhone recommends understanding how long you have to return it and what reasons the seller accepts.

For eligible purchases made through the Apple Store in the United States, Apple’s current return terms provide a 14-day return period, subject to conditions. That policy does not apply automatically to phones bought from marketplaces or other retailers: follow the policy of the seller you are actually buying from.

Check that the iPhone is unlocked and usable
Verify Carrier Lock
On the iPhone, open Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock. Apple says that “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. If another carrier is shown, the phone is restricted to that carrier. Check compatibility with your carrier before buying, rather than assuming a phone described as discounted or refurbished will work on your network.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Only the current carrier can unlock an iPhone, and the process can take a few days. If you need to use a different carrier, ask the seller to arrange the unlock before the sale, then verify the status in Settings. See Apple’s instructions for unlocking an iPhone.
Make sure Activation Lock is off
Activation Lock can prevent you from setting up and using the phone. Apple’s advice is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” For an in-person purchase, ask the owner to turn it off. For an online order, return the phone if it arrives displaying “iPhone Locked to Owner.” Ideally, the device should be erased and you should be able to complete setup and activation before your return window closes. Apple explains this check in its preowned iPhone guidance.
Rank #2
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Find out what warranty coverage remains
Apple’s US iOS Limited Warranty provides one year of coverage beginning with the original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser; the US warranty document has been in effect since January 19, 2024. That is the length of the original warranty period, not a promise that a secondhand phone has a full year left. Ask for the purchase date and proof of purchase, then check the specific device’s serial number using Apple’s coverage lookup. Request the seller’s written warranty too, if one is offered.
Apple notes that warranty service for an iPhone may be restricted to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors originally sold it. The relevant terms are in Apple’s US iOS Limited Warranty. Buyers outside the United States should check their local Apple warranty and return terms as well as the seller’s policy.

Inspect condition, battery health, and repair history
Apple recommends asking about physical damage, battery health, and parts and service history. Inspect the phone promptly after receiving it, and test its basic functions within the seller’s return window. A listing’s condition description alone does not establish the actual state of the device.
When available, review Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History. Apple says an “Unknown” label can mean a part was installed incompletely, is nongenuine or previously used, or is not functioning as expected. Check battery health on the device and compare what you find with the seller’s description. Apple’s preowned iPhone guidance covers these inspection points.

Compare Apple Certified Refurbished with other discounted offers
Apple’s US Certified Refurbished program describes full functional testing, a standard one-year limited warranty, free shipping and returns, and a new battery and outer shell for refurbished iOS devices. These are program-specific terms, not assurances about phones refurbished by other sellers. Apple advertises savings of up to 15% on its Certified Refurbished US page; that is a maximum, not a guaranteed discount on any particular iPhone. See Apple’s Certified Refurbished iPhone listings and program details for the current offer and conditions.
For any two offers, compare the same iPhone model and storage capacity, then weigh these details together:

AppleCare eligibility is device-specific. If you are considering it, check whether the particular iPhone qualifies through Apple or in the device’s settings; do not assume a used phone is eligible. Apple describes the available check on its AppleCare coverage page.
