A discounted iPhone is worth considering only after you verify two separate things: the phone can legally and technically be transferred to you, and the seller and payment route give you a realistic way to recover your money if the listing is wrong. Before paying, confirm the seller’s identity, return and warranty terms, the exact model and carrier status, and how the marketplace handles disputes. When you receive the phone, check for Activation Lock first, then inspect the hardware, battery information, repair history and network compatibility.
Use this order: seller first, device second
Do not let a low price push the device checks ahead of the transaction checks. A phone can be in excellent physical condition and still be unusable because it remains linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account. Conversely, a correctly unlocked phone can still be a poor purchase if the seller refuses returns or the listing hides major damage.

| Before payment | Seller identity, reputation, certification scope, total cost, return process, warranty, exact model, storage, region, carrier compatibility and payment protections | Unclear seller, unverifiable claims, no usable return route, pressure to pay outside the marketplace, or a price that depends on conditions not written in the listing |
| At handover or immediately after delivery | Hello setup screen, no Activation Lock request, physical condition, charging, controls, battery information, Parts and Service History, Network Provider Lock and model details | Previous owner’s Apple Account is requested, the phone does not match the listing, major undisclosed damage appears, or the seller’s stated return deadline is approaching |
Keep a copy of the listing, photographs, order confirmation and every message with the seller. Those records are useful if the delivered phone differs from the description.
Check the seller and the deal before you commit
Identify who is actually selling the phone
Record the seller’s legal or account name, marketplace profile, contact method and location. A marketplace name alone does not tell you whether its buyer protection applies to this seller, this category of item or this type of transaction. Read the seller’s own terms as well as the platform’s terms.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Look for a consistent history of completed sales and detailed feedback, but do not treat a high rating as proof that the particular phone is genuine, unlocked or free of an account lock. Pay attention to reviews describing phones, returns and condition accuracy rather than unrelated products.
Define what “refurbished,” “certified” or “excellent” means
Words such as certified, renewed, refurbished and excellent are not interchangeable. Ask what inspection was performed, which parts may have been replaced, whether the battery was tested, what cosmetic grade is included and who provides the warranty. If the seller cannot explain the certification in concrete terms, treat the label as marketing rather than evidence.
Read the return window and the process
Confirm the number of days, the event that starts the clock, the condition required for a return, restocking charges, return-shipping responsibility and the address or portal used to open the request. Check whether the seller or the marketplace makes the final decision. A short inspection period is especially important for online purchases because some faults appear only after setup, charging or cellular activation.

Calculate the total cost, not just the headline price
Add shipping, taxes, import charges, required accessories and any stated restocking or return-shipping cost. Compare that total with the cost of a replacement battery or other service you may reasonably need. Do not assume the cheapest listing remains cheapest after these items are included.

Activation Lock is a non-negotiable stop condition
Apple’s official pre-owned iPhone guidance says not to buy an iPhone when Activation Lock is enabled. Activation Lock ties the device to the previous owner’s Apple Account through Find My. Without that owner’s credentials, you may be unable to activate or use the phone normally.
Check an in-person phone
- Ask the seller to erase the phone in front of you, or erase it yourself only with the seller’s permission and presence.
- Turn it on and begin setup.
- Continue until the device shows the Hello screen and allows you to choose language and region.
- Proceed far enough to verify that setup does not request the previous owner’s Apple Account or passcode.
- Stop if a screen says the iPhone is linked to another owner, asks for that person’s account, or prevents setup.
Apple states that a device is ready for a new owner when the Hello screen appears after the previous account has been removed. Do not accept a promise that the seller will remove the lock later. The seller must clear it before you take ownership.

Check an online order immediately
Open the package while recording its condition and compare the serial or model information with the listing. Power it on before spending time transferring data or customizing it. If setup requests the previous owner’s account, stop, photograph the message and contact the seller through the marketplace’s documented return route. Do not send your own account credentials to the seller and do not pay an extra fee for an alleged remote unlock.
Inspect the actual iPhone, not the stock photographs
Exterior and ports
Remove the case if possible. Examine the display for cracks, deep scratches, bright or dark areas and touch dead spots. Check the frame and back for bends, separation, dents or signs of liquid exposure. Inspect the camera lenses and the charging connector for damage, corrosion or packed debris.
A small cosmetic mark may be acceptable at a discount; a bent frame, lifted display, loose component or damaged connector can signal a more expensive problem. Compare every defect with the listing’s grading language and photographs.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Power, charging and controls
- Confirm that the phone starts without unusual heat, repeated restarts or a warning that prevents setup.
- Connect a known-good compatible charger and verify that charging begins and remains stable when the cable is moved gently.
- Test the touchscreen across the entire display, physical buttons, speakers, microphones, cameras, flash, vibration and biometric hardware where fitted.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and, after inserting your SIM or activating an eSIM, test cellular calls, messages and mobile data.
- Check Bluetooth and location-dependent functions if they matter to your use.
These tests do not prove that every component will remain reliable, but they can reveal obvious faults before a return deadline expires.
Match the delivered phone to the listing
Verify model family, storage capacity, color, serial or IMEI information shown in the device and included accessories. A phone with a different storage size or regional model can have a different value or network capability. If the condition, contents or identity differs from the listing, use the stated return process rather than negotiating an informal partial refund that could weaken your dispute record.
Evaluate battery health without using a made-up cutoff
On supported iPhones, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health or, on newer iOS versions, Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Review maximum capacity and any message about service, significant degradation or performance management.
Apple does not set a universal percentage at which every used iPhone becomes a bad purchase. The practical decision depends on the displayed condition, your expected daily use, the phone’s price and the likely cost and inconvenience of a battery replacement. A lower capacity can be acceptable for a lightly used backup at a suitable price, but it is a poor fit if you need long battery life and cannot budget for service.
Battery information may be unavailable when iOS cannot verify the battery, including some unknown or nongenuine batteries. Treat a missing reading as uncertainty, not as evidence of a healthy battery. Ask the seller how the battery was tested and make sure the return policy lets you send the phone back if its real-world performance does not match the description.

- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
Review Parts and Service History
On iOS 15.2 or later, go to Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Availability depends on the model and whether a covered component was replaced.
| Label or situation | What it tells you | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Genuine Apple Part | The replacement used a genuine Apple part and the applicable repair processes. | Useful evidence of the part’s provenance, but still test the component and assess the price. |
| Unknown | Installation may be incomplete, a nongenuine or previously used part may have been fitted, or the part may not be working as expected. | Ask for an explanation and discount only if you are comfortable with the risk; use the return route if the condition was not disclosed. |
| No Parts and Service History section | The model or repair history may not support the feature. | Do not interpret its absence as proof that the phone was never repaired. |
A part can also be linked to another person’s account. Apple says a part locked to someone else’s account is not eligible for Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare service until the issue is resolved. Ask the seller to resolve any account-linked part before purchase.
Confirm the phone is unlocked for your carrier and country
Read Network Provider Lock
Open Settings > General > About and find Network Provider Lock. No SIM restrictions is Apple’s stated indicator that the iPhone is unlocked. If a carrier name appears, the phone is restricted to that carrier unless its unlock requirements are met.
Verify the exact model and local network support
“Unlocked” does not guarantee that every network will work in every country. Model variants can differ in supported cellular bands, SIM configuration and regional features. Before paying, give your carrier the exact model number and ask whether it supports the required bands, 4G or 5G service, voice-over-LTE requirements and eSIM or physical-SIM arrangement.
Unlock policies, import rules, taxes and consumer remedies vary by country. A phone unlocked under one carrier’s policy may still be unsuitable for your local network, and a device imported from another region may have different service limitations.

Use a payment and dispute route with real protections
Pay through the marketplace’s supported checkout whenever possible. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission warns that marketplace protections differ by platform, seller and item, and that claim windows can be short. Read the protection terms before paying, including exclusions for off-platform communication, prohibited payment methods, used electronics or transactions completed outside the marketplace.
Do not move payment to a bank transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency wallet or an external link merely because the seller offers a lower price. Those methods can remove the platform’s dispute process. Keep the order number, listing URL, seller messages, photographs, tracking information and unboxing evidence.
For U.S. consumers, the FTC notes that credit cards can provide legal protections in qualifying disputes. That does not mean the same remedies apply identically in every country, debit-card transaction or payment service. Check your card issuer’s process and deadlines before relying on it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare listings with the same decision fields
When two or more discounted phones look similar, record the following for each one instead of comparing headline prices alone:
| Field | Questions to record |
|---|---|
| Total price | What is the delivered total after tax, shipping and any import or return costs? |
| Seller | Who is responsible for the sale, and what relevant feedback and contact details are available? |
| Condition evidence | Are the photographs of the actual phone, and are every scratch, dent or missing accessory disclosed? |
| Returns | How long is the window, who pays shipping, and where must the request be opened? |
| Certification | What inspection, grading and battery testing does the certification actually cover? |
| Warranty | Who provides it, what parts and labor are covered, and are account-linked or nongenuine parts excluded? |
| Battery | Is maximum capacity shown, are service messages disclosed, and is the reading verifiable after delivery? |
| Repair history | What does Parts and Service History show, and is the absence of the section being overinterpreted? |
| Activation status | Will the phone arrive erased at the Hello screen without a previous owner’s account request? |
| Network compatibility | Does Network Provider Lock show No SIM restrictions, and does the exact model work with your carrier and region? |
| Payment protection | Does the chosen payment path preserve a documented dispute process and a workable claim deadline? |
There is no evidence-based universal score or battery minimum that can decide every purchase. Give more weight to a non-negotiable failure such as Activation Lock than to a cosmetic difference or a small price gap.
A practical buying workflow
- Define your requirements. Choose the model generation, storage, SIM type, required network features and maximum delivered price.
- Screen the seller. Confirm identity, relevant feedback, certification details, warranty provider and return procedure.
- Request missing evidence. Ask for actual-device photographs, condition disclosures, battery information when available, model details and confirmation that the phone will be removed from the previous owner’s account.
- Verify compatibility. Check Network Provider Lock information and confirm the exact model with your carrier for your country.
- Pay with protection. Use the marketplace checkout and a payment method whose dispute rules you understand; never trade away protection for an off-platform discount.
- Inspect immediately. Record the unboxing, reach the Hello screen, test charging and controls, then review battery and Parts and Service History.
- Decide before the deadline. Keep the phone only when it matches the listing and works for your needs. Open a documented return or dispute as soon as a material mismatch appears.
Red flags and the correct response
- “I will remove the lock after you pay.” Do not buy. Activation Lock must be cleared before transfer.
- Only stock photographs. Request pictures of the actual device or choose a listing with verifiable condition evidence.
- Pressure to leave the marketplace. Keep payment and messages on the platform so its stated protections remain available.
- Vague certification. Ask what was inspected and which warranty applies; walk away if the answer is not specific.
- Missing battery or repair information. Treat the gap as uncertainty and price the risk only if the return terms are strong.
- Carrier compatibility described only as “unlocked.” Check Network Provider Lock and the exact model with your carrier in your country.
- Condition differs on arrival. Photograph the discrepancy and use the published return or dispute path before its deadline.
Country, warranty and legal limitations
Apple’s device checks are useful across markets, but carrier support, unlock rules, warranty coverage, repair eligibility, payment remedies and marketplace protections are location-dependent. The FTC guidance about marketplace claims and credit-card protections is U.S.-specific and should not be presented as a universal legal rule. If the phone is imported, confirm taxes, radio-band compatibility, service availability and who will honor the warranty in your country.
A seller’s warranty is separate from Apple’s coverage. Ask whether service is provided by the seller, Apple or another repairer, and whether replaced, unknown or account-linked parts affect eligibility. Do not assume that a phone described as refurbished has the same coverage as a new retail device.

Buy only when the seller’s identity and terms are clear, the payment route preserves a usable dispute option, the exact model works with your carrier and region, and you can verify a clean Hello-screen setup without the previous owner’s account. After delivery, reject or return any phone with Activation Lock, a material undisclosed defect or a condition that does not match the listing. A discount is worthwhile only when it compensates for clearly understood wear or service needs—not for an unresolved ownership, network or transaction risk.
