A low sticker price is only a good deal after you verify the exact model, total delivered cost, seller, condition, return route, remaining warranty, software-support period and repair options. A clearance, used or refurbished device can be worthwhile, but a short return window, uncertain authenticity, expired updates or an unreplaceable battery can erase the savings.
Use the checklist below before paying. It is written for phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, game consoles, smart-home equipment, wearables and other electronics, but the details vary by model, seller and country. The consumer-protection links cited here are United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance; your local rules, warranty-transfer rights and marketplace policies may differ.
Start with a go/no-go decision
Proceed only when you can answer these questions in writing:

- What will the item cost after shipping, taxes, mandatory subscriptions, accessories and other fees?
- Who is the actual seller and shipper, and what marketplace dispute process applies?
- What does the condition label mean for this particular listing?
- How many days do you have to return it, who pays postage and is a restocking fee charged?
- What warranty remains, who provides it and what does it exclude?
- When will the manufacturer stop operating-system, firmware, feature, bug-fix or security updates for this exact model?
- Can batteries and other wear parts be replaced, and are parts, tools and repair services available?
If any answer is missing, treat the missing information as purchase risk rather than assuming the most favorable interpretation.

1. Calculate the real price and read every deal condition
Compare the same configuration
A percentage discount can be misleading when the sale item has less storage, memory, a different regional radio band, a different processor or missing accessories. Copy the exact model identifier from the listing and compare it with the manufacturer’s specifications and competing offers. “Similar” devices are not equivalent for warranty, update support or repair parts.
Add every unavoidable cost
- Item price and shipping
- Sales tax, customs or import charges where applicable
- Required data, cloud, gaming or smart-home plans
- Necessary charger, cable, dock, battery, proprietary storage or adapter
- Activation, recycling, service or marketplace fees
- Likely first repair or battery replacement cost if the device is used
Write down a delivered total before comparing discounts. A device that is 40% off can cost more than a new alternative once a required plan, missing charger and paid return shipping are included.
Read the fine print behind the advertised price
Look for conditions such as trade-in eligibility, a new-line activation, a subscription commitment, a limited quantity, a coupon that expires at checkout or a price available only in a particular region. 2. Identify the seller and your protection path
Find out who actually sells and ships it
On a marketplace, the website displaying the offer may not be the seller. Record the seller’s legal or business name, physical or mailing address, contact method, dispatch location and whether fulfillment is handled by the marketplace or a third party. The seller identity can affect warranty validity, authenticity, taxes, return postage and which dispute process applies.

Check independent feedback for the specific seller
Read recent reviews that mention the same product category. Look for reports of counterfeit serial numbers, substituted accessories, battery wear, grading disputes, delayed refunds or refusal to honor returns. A high overall score does not prove that a particular listing is genuine.
Map the dispute and payment route before checkout
Confirm the deadline for opening a marketplace claim, what evidence it requires and whether the platform’s protection covers this seller, product category and payment method. The FTC recommends checking who can help if there is a problem and paying with a safe method before buying from an online marketplace: FTC marketplace guidance.

Pay through the marketplace when possible and use a payment method that offers dispute protections in your jurisdiction. Avoid wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency or other methods that are difficult to reverse when a seller is unknown. Keep order confirmations, tracking records, messages and photographs of the package.
3. Translate the condition label into specific facts
Do not treat “refurbished,” “used,” “as is” or “close-out” as a quality grade
These labels do not by themselves promise a pristine exterior, a new battery, complete accessories or a manufacturer-backed warranty. A seller’s grading scale may be different from another seller’s. Read the full description, including notes hidden below the headline or in a condition drop-down.
Ask what was tested, repaired and replaced
Request written answers to these questions:
- Was the exact unit tested, or is the listing for a batch?
- Which functions were tested: charging, battery health, display, cameras, microphones, speakers, ports, wireless radios, biometric sensors and buttons?
- Were any parts replaced? If so, are they original, manufacturer-approved or third-party parts?
- What battery capacity or estimated runtime remains, if the device has a rechargeable battery?
- Are there screen scratches, dents, dead pixels, burn-in, keyboard wear, liquid indicators or missing covers?
- Are the serial number, operating-system lock, account lock and mobile-network status clear?
- Which charger, cable, stylus, remote, case, manuals and original packaging are included?
Ask for photographs of the actual unit rather than stock images when appearance matters. Preserve the seller’s written responses; a phone conversation without a record is harder to rely on.

Check authenticity and ownership signals
Expensive branded products offered at unusually low prices can be counterfeit or stolen, according to the FTC. Verify the serial number or IMEI through the manufacturer or carrier where that service exists, check that the device is not activation-locked or reported lost, and compare packaging, labels and included accessories with official documentation. Marketplace seller-verification information is described in the FTC’s INFORM Consumers Act guidance.

4. Establish the return window before you pay
Do not assume that a marketplace’s general return policy applies to sale, close-out, used or refurbished merchandise. Confirm the policy for the exact listing and save the applicable page.

Start the return process before the deadline, not on the last day. Photograph the device, serial number, packaging and accessories, and keep the drop-off receipt and tracking number until the refund is complete. 5. Read the written warranty, not just the word “warranted”
Identify the provider and remaining term
Download or view the complete warranty before purchase. Record who provides it, when coverage began, how much time remains and whether it follows the device, the original buyer or an authorized seller. A used device may have little or no coverage even when the original model was sold with a longer warranty.
Check what the warranty actually pays for
- Covered failures and excluded damage, including drops, liquid, wear, cosmetic defects and unauthorized repairs
- Repair, replacement, refund or credit remedy
- Parts, labor, diagnostic, shipping and inspection charges
- Required registration, proof of purchase or use of an authorized service center
- Claim submission steps, turnaround expectations and data-loss responsibility
- Geographic limits and whether the warranty is valid for this buyer and sales region
Warranty terms must be available before purchase, and the FTC recommends saving the warranty and receipt: FTC Warranties guidance. Store those documents with the listing and payment record.

6. Verify future software and security support
Find a model-specific end date
For an internet-connected product, look for the manufacturer’s stated support duration or end date for the exact model and region. Check separately for operating-system upgrades, firmware updates, new features, bug fixes and security patches; one category may continue after another ends. Do not infer support years from the product’s age or from a newer or older model’s policy.
Ask what happens when updates stop
Consider whether the device will still connect to essential services, whether third-party apps require a newer operating system, and whether unpatched vulnerabilities are acceptable for the device’s role. A smart camera, lock, router or payment device has a different risk profile from an offline e-reader or basic calculator.
A 2024 FTC staff review found that smart-product makers often did not tell prospective buyers how long software updates would be provided. The FTC summarized the consumer impact by warning that people can lose substantial value when smart products stop delivering desired features: FTC software-update disclosure release. 7. Price the battery, parts and repairs
Check likely wear parts
Batteries, storage media, printer heads, controller sticks, seals and other wear parts can determine how long a discounted device remains useful. Find out whether the battery or part is replaceable, whether an authorized service center offers the work, and whether independent repairers can obtain genuine or compatible parts.
Look for repair restrictions
Glued-in batteries, scarce spare parts, unavailable repair manuals, locked diagnostic software and pairing requirements can make a simple failure uneconomical. The FTC has identified these practices as repair restrictions: FTC guidance on repair restrictions.

Estimate total ownership cost
Ask for a repair quote before buying when the device is expensive or already worn. Include the cost of shipping a device to a service center, data recovery after failure and a replacement battery at the likely point of use. A low purchase price is not a saving if one unavailable part ends the device’s useful life.

An add-on plan is a new purchase, not proof that the underlying device is a good deal. Compare it with any manufacturer or seller warranty that is included or still active.

When two or more listings remain, compare them row by row rather than sorting by discount percentage.

A larger discount does not automatically win. A shorter return window, uncertain authenticity, expired software support or expensive repair can outweigh the price difference.
Use this checkout workflow
- Capture the listing. Save the exact model, configuration, price, condition statement, accessories, seller name, return policy and warranty link.
- Verify compatibility. Check regional power, cellular bands, accounts, ports, operating-system requirements and accessories needed for your use.
- Get condition answers. Ask the seller what was tested, replaced, damaged or omitted, and keep the response.
- Confirm support. Locate the model-specific software-update policy and warranty terms; mark any end date on your calendar.
- Calculate ownership cost. Add delivered price, required plans, missing accessories, likely wear-part replacement and a possible return shipment.
- Confirm recourse. Check the claim deadline, payment protection and return authorization process.
- Pay securely. Use the marketplace checkout and a payment method with dispute rights where available.
- Inspect immediately. Photograph the unopened package, serial number and device condition; test every advertised function during the return period.
- Act on defects quickly. If the item is materially different, open the seller or marketplace claim before the stated deadline and retain tracking evidence.
Red flags that justify walking away
- The seller will not provide a model number, actual-unit photos or a clear condition description.
- The price is far below comparable offers and the seller cannot explain why.
- The listing asks for payment outside the marketplace or through a hard-to-recover method.
- The return policy is missing, shorter than expected, sale-item-excluded or subject to an unexplained restocking charge.
- The warranty is “included” but the provider, transferability, region or remaining term is not stated.
- The manufacturer gives no support date for a connected device and the seller relies only on the device’s age.
- A battery, proprietary part or diagnostic tool is unavailable or costs nearly as much as the device.
- The serial number is obscured, altered, reported lost, activation-locked or inconsistent with the packaging.
What to do when the device arrives
Before transferring personal data, compare the serial number and configuration with the order. Photograph the package and contents, inspect for damage and confirm every listed accessory. Test charging, battery behavior, display, ports, wireless connections, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons, biometric functions and the advertised software features. Check for account locks, carrier restrictions and signs of liquid exposure. If a critical test fails, preserve the evidence and use the documented return or dispute route within its deadline.
Only after the device passes inspection should you install sensitive accounts, move irreplaceable data or discard packaging. Keep the receipt, warranty, seller messages, serial number and return tracking for as long as coverage or a payment dispute may be needed.
Bottom line: when is the discount sensible?
Buy when the exact configuration is understood, the all-in cost is still attractive, the seller and payment route provide usable recourse, the condition is documented, the return window is long enough for testing, warranty coverage is meaningful, connected features have a stated support horizon and repair costs are acceptable. Pass when the seller avoids specifics or when one unresolved risk—especially authenticity, support, return rights or a critical replacement part—could consume the entire saving.
