Before paying, turn every unusual claim about a collectible into a specific statement, obtain supporting documents, compare those documents with the exact object, verify the seller’s protections, and check the law for the material and jurisdictions involved. If a disputed claim would materially change the price or legality, pause the transaction and obtain an independent specialist opinion.
Why unusual claims require more than a convincing appearance
A collectible can be valuable because of what it is made from, who made it, where it came from, how old it is, or whether it can legally be owned and sold. Those facts are separate questions. A document proving age may not prove material; a materials report may not prove the maker; a seller’s story may not establish ownership history.
Visual inspection is a starting point, not authentication. Natural, cultured, laboratory-created, imitation, treated, repaired and composite materials can look similar. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that laboratory-created gemstones can share the chemical, physical and visual properties of natural stones, while imitation stones use different materials and do not share those properties. Use the same disciplined approach for wood, bone, shell, metals, fossils, plastics, textiles, taxidermy and mixed-media objects: identify exactly which parts contain the claimed material, what treatment or repair has occurred, and what evidence supports each assertion.

1. Define the material precisely
Translate sales language into a material specification
Ask the seller to identify the material for every significant component, not merely the object’s headline category. “Stone,” “ivory,” “vintage,” “handmade” or “natural” is not a sufficiently specific description when value depends on the distinction.
- Is the material natural, cultured, laboratory-created, imitation, treated, repaired or composite?
- Which parts are made from it, and where are those parts located?
- Were any components replaced, veneered, filled, dyed, stabilized, plated or reconstructed?
- What is the claimed maker, workshop, culture, geographic origin and date?
- What is the basis for any age, rarity, limited-edition or “untouched” assertion?
- What care restrictions follow from the material or treatment?
For diamonds and gemstones, FTC consumer guidance says paperwork should state relevant details such as origin, weight or size, treatments and care requirements. The same principle is useful for other collectibles: request a description that another professional could identify without seeing the original advertisement. See the FTC gemstone guidance.
Do not treat “natural” and “real” as interchangeable
“Natural” generally describes origin, while “real” is often an informal sales term. A laboratory-created gem may be genuine diamond or sapphire in its physical and chemical properties but not mined; an imitation may resemble a gem without having its properties. Ask the seller to use the recognized category and to explain any shorthand in the listing. If the distinction affects price, require it on the invoice.

Heat, filling, dyeing, bleaching, stabilization, restoration and replacement parts can affect appearance, durability, insurance and value. Request a list of known treatments and repairs, including work that is not visible in photographs. A composite object should be described as composite even if one prominent section is made from a sought-after material.
2. Put material, origin, maker and age claims in writing
Important statements should appear in the receipt, invoice, contract or other sales paperwork—not only in a chat message or a disappearing listing. FTC advice on cultural art recommends obtaining written proof of authenticity or origin and a receipt that records material and maker claims. Ask the seller to write the claim in a form that can be tested later. For example: “The bowl is described as carved from natural walrus tusk, with a replacement handle, attributed to [maker], and accompanied by the dated invoice shown.” Do not accept “appears to be,” “in the style of,” or “possibly” as if it were a guarantee; those phrases describe uncertainty and should be priced accordingly.

Save the complete listing, photographs, messages, attachments, seller identity and payment record. A screenshot should include the item title, price, date and condition description. Keep the original files when possible because a marketplace listing can change after purchase.
Separate a seller’s representation from a third-party conclusion
Ask who made each statement and what was actually examined. A seller may report a previous owner’s attribution; an appraiser may offer an opinion based only on photographs; a laboratory may identify a material without authenticating the maker. Each conclusion has a scope. Record that scope rather than treating every certificate as a universal guarantee.
3. Match every document to the exact object
A certificate with the right category label is not enough. Compare the paperwork with the item in the listing and, where possible, with the object in hand.
- Confirm the complete object description, dimensions, weight and component locations.
- Compare signatures, stamps, serial numbers, labels, date marks and construction details.
- Look for close photographs of distinctive damage, repairs, grain, tool marks and attachments.
- Check that the photographs show the actual piece rather than a stock image or a representative example.
- Ask who issued the document, when, for whom, using what methods and with what limitations.
- Verify whether the conclusion covers material, age, maker, origin, condition or only one of those questions.
The UK government’s ivory buyer guidance offers a concrete item-matching model: registration or exemption information should correspond to the item type, ivory components, distinguishing features and photographs. Buyers can ask to see the supporting evidence used for the record. Read Buy or hire ivory items.
Watch for documents that are genuine but irrelevant
A receipt from a reputable auction can document a sale without proving the object’s attribution. A conservation report can describe repairs without confirming age. A provenance letter can establish that someone owned an object without proving that the object was made by the claimed artist. Keep each document tied to the precise question it answers.

Provenance is the documented history of an object’s ownership and movement. A persuasive chain connects the present item to identifiable people, dates and records, with no unexplained gaps that coincide with a change in attribution or value.

Useful forms of provenance
- Dated receipts, bills of sale or inheritance records that describe the object.
- Dated catalogues, books or publications containing a matching description or photograph.
- Exhibition, collection or inventory records with identifying details.
- Maker’s marks, date marks, serial numbers or other contemporary records.
- Named previous owners and a documented transfer between them.
- Expert age verification or scientific testing, with the method and limitations stated.
For UK ivory dealings, government guidance lists dated receipts or bills, dated catalogues or publications, date marks, ownership history, expert age verification and radiocarbon dating as examples that may help establish age. Those examples belong to that specific legal process; they are not a universal authentication standard for every collectible. See Deal in items made of or containing ivory.
Identify gaps instead of smoothing them over
Ask when and how the object entered each collection, why the description changed, and whether photographs show the same repairs and marks. “Family estate” or “bought years ago” may be true but is not a complete chain. An unexplained gap does not automatically make an object false; it means the claim needs a lower confidence level or further evidence.
5. Use independent expertise when the claim changes the decision
Obtain specialist help when material identity, cultural attribution, age or legality would materially change what you are willing to pay or whether you can own the object. Choose someone whose subject expertise and testing capability match the object. A general antiques opinion may not resolve a protected-species question or identify a modern composite.

- What qualifications and relevant category experience do you have?
- Will you examine the physical object or only photographs?
- Which questions will the report answer, and which will it not answer?
- What methods will be used, and could testing damage the object?
- Are you independent of the seller, marketplace or proposed transaction?
- Will the report identify uncertainty, alternative explanations and confidence limits?
No single test or certification body is established for all unusual materials. A qualified specialist should explain whether a proposed method can distinguish natural from laboratory-created material, detect treatment, estimate age, identify a species or address only one narrow feature. Do not order destructive testing until you understand the risks and have permission from the owner.
6. Check the seller and marketplace before sending money
Online marketplace protections vary by platform, seller and category. The FTC advises buyers to review coverage and claim deadlines, inspect photographs of the actual item, keep written records and use a protected payment method. Its guidance is available at Buying From an Online Marketplace.
Review the transaction terms
- Read the return period, refund conditions, exclusions and evidence required for a claim.
- Check whether the policy covers misrepresentation of material, authenticity, condition and legal status—or only non-delivery.
- Confirm the deadline for opening a dispute; a short window can expire before specialist examination is possible.
- Verify the seller’s legal name, contact details, location and stated return address.
- Ask questions through the platform so the conversation is time-stamped and preserved.
- Pay through the marketplace or another method that retains dispute protection; moving off-platform can remove coverage.
Use price as a warning signal, not proof
The FTC notes that an unusually low price for an expensive item can be a warning sign. It is not proof of fraud: a genuine bargain, urgent sale or damaged object is possible. Treat the price as a reason to ask for stronger evidence, not as a substitute for evidence.

Inspect photographs critically
Request high-resolution views of the front, back, underside, edges, mounts, marks, repairs and any claimed material. Ask for a current photograph beside a handwritten date or measurement if you need to distinguish the item from stock images. Inconsistent lighting, cropping that hides joints or a refusal to show the underside are reasons to pause.

7. Check legal status before ownership or shipment
Legality depends on the exact species or material, the object’s date and form, the transaction type, and every jurisdiction involved. An object described as antique, inherited or partly made from a substitute is not automatically exempt. Import, export, transport and marketplace rules can add requirements even when a domestic sale appears permitted.
UK ivory: a jurisdiction-specific example
UK guidance requires buyers to check registration or exemption certification for items made of or containing listed ivory species before taking ownership. The cited species include elephant, hippopotamus, killer whale, narwhal and sperm whale. The record must correspond to the actual item, including its type, ivory components, distinguishing features and photographs. Start with Buy or hire ivory items and Deal in items made of or containing ivory.
That UK regime is an example, not a worldwide rule. Before committing, check current law where the seller, buyer, object and shipping route are located. Potentially relevant regimes can include protected-species permits, cultural-property restrictions, import or export documents and marketplace prohibitions. If the legal position is uncertain, ask the responsible government agency or a lawyer familiar with the object category before payment.
Do not confuse an exemption with unrestricted trade
A registration or exemption may authorize a particular dealing under defined conditions; it does not necessarily make every future sale, export or modification lawful. Keep copies of all records and confirm what the document permits, for which object and in which jurisdiction.

8. Compare two candidates with the same evidence framework
When two collectibles compete for your budget, score the evidence rather than choosing the more attractive story. The following axes expose differences without pretending that a checklist replaces examination or legal advice.

9. Follow a documented buying workflow
- Save the listing. Capture the title, price, seller identity, full description, photographs and date.
- Write a claim sheet. List every material, maker, origin, age, rarity, treatment, condition and legal assertion that affects your decision.
- Request written answers. Ask the seller to address each claim and to state what is known, inferred or unknown.
- Request item-specific records. Obtain receipts, catalogues, reports, permits, registration or exemption information and photographs of marks.
- Match records to the object. Compare dimensions, components, marks, repairs and distinctive features with the actual photographs or inspection.
- Check the law. Confirm ownership, sale and shipping requirements for the material and route before paying.
- Arrange independent review. If uncertainty could change the price or legality, obtain a specialist opinion and understand its limits.
- Review marketplace protection. Note the return and dispute deadline, exclusions and required evidence.
- Pay safely and preserve the file. Use protected payment, retain every message and store the final invoice with the item’s records.
- Recheck on delivery. Photograph the packaging and object immediately, compare it with the listing and report discrepancies within the stated deadline.
10. Red flags and appropriate responses

11. Assemble a buyer’s file
Keep one folder—digital and, for important objects, printed—with the following:
- Original listing, photographs, seller profile and all messages.
- Invoice or receipt that states material, maker, origin, age, treatments, repairs and condition claims.
- Certificates, laboratory reports, appraisals and the examiner’s qualifications.
- Provenance records arranged chronologically, with gaps noted.
- Registration, exemption, permit or import/export documents where applicable.
- Payment confirmation, shipping record, delivery photographs and dispute correspondence.
- Your own inspection photographs, measurements and notes made on receipt.
This file lets a future appraiser, insurer, marketplace or government authority see what was claimed, what was documented and what remains uncertain. It also prevents a later description from silently becoming more certain than the evidence supports.
12. When to walk away
Do not buy when the seller will not state the material, will not provide item-specific photographs or records, demands unprotected payment, blocks a reasonable inspection, or cannot explain a legal requirement that applies to the object. Also pause when the only support for a high-value claim is visual resemblance, a generic certificate or an unbroken story with no dated records.
Walking away is not a judgment that the collectible is false. It means the evidence, protection or legal certainty is insufficient for the risk and price of this transaction.
