Check identity and paperwork before discussing price, then put structural rust and safety-critical repairs ahead of paint, trim, or nostalgia. A 1970s family car can use identification formats unlike today’s 17-digit VIN system, and a polished restoration can hide corrosion or undocumented work. Match the car to its title or registration, inspect the structure safely, and pay for an independent, written inspection before you commit.
What should I check first when buying a classic car?
Start with three gates, in this order:
- Identity and legal documents: Confirm that the registration or title, identification numbers, seller’s name, and description all refer to the same car.
- Structural integrity: Find corrosion or previous repairs in chassis members, sills, floor structures, suspension and steering mountings, brake supports, and seat-belt attachment areas.
- Independent condition assessment: Have a marque-aware specialist produce a written report that separates safety defects, structural repairs, mechanical work, and cosmetic needs.
Only after those gates should you compare paint quality, originality, equipment, or asking price. The car’s model, construction, market, and repair history determine what a defect means; no generic checklist can certify every 1970s vehicle.
Why a 1970s family car needs a different approach
Identification systems changed over time
The standardized 17-character VIN became a US requirement for vehicles built from the 1981 model year. A 1970s car may instead have a shorter chassis number, body number, engine number, or a manufacturer-specific plate in an unexpected location. Do not reject a car because it lacks a modern-looking VIN, and do not accept a number merely because it resembles one. Find the identification method and stamping locations for that exact make, year, and market, then compare them with the title or registration.

Construction changes where rust matters
A body-on-frame saloon, an estate with a separate chassis, and a unitary (monocoque) car do not carry loads in the same places. A hole in a removable fender is mainly a bodywork issue; corrosion at a suspension pickup, chassis rail, sill, crossmember, or seat-belt mount can affect control of the vehicle. The inspection therefore has to follow the car’s load paths rather than count visible rust spots.

Historic status is not a safety certificate
Registration, inspection, emissions, tax, and insurance treatment depend on the jurisdiction. For example, UK guidance describes an MOT exemption for a vehicle built or first registered more than 40 years ago only when it has not had substantial changes in the previous 30 years. That exemption does not prove roadworthiness and is not a rule for other countries. Confirm the current requirements with the authority where you will register and use the car.
Before viewing the car: establish the facts
Define how and where you will use it
Write down the intended use—occasional shows, family trips, commuting, towing, or long-distance travel—and the place where it will be registered. Ask the local vehicle authority and insurers about registration, roadworthiness inspections, emissions tests, historic classifications, tax, permitted use, storage, and required coverage. Rules described by New Zealand and UK agencies are useful examples, not global requirements; the New Zealand Transport Agency’s buyer guidance is at nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/choosing-the-right-vehicle/tips-for-buying-a-used-car.
Request a document pack
Before travelling, ask for clear copies or photographs of:
- Title, registration certificate, or equivalent ownership document.
- All identification plates, stampings, and labels.
- Service books, maintenance schedules, repair invoices, and inspection certificates.
- Restoration photographs showing metalwork before paint.
- A list of engine, gearbox, axle, suspension, brake, electrical, and safety modifications.
- Parts receipts and information about replica or replacement components.
Missing records are uncertainty to investigate and price; they are not proof that the car is defective, nor proof that it is original. Ask the seller to explain gaps and reconcile dates, mileage, owners, and work described in the documents.
Check official records where available
Use the registration or identification details to compare the seller’s description with government records, theft or write-off information, inspection history, and recall databases where those services exist. UK buyers can follow the DVLA checklist at gov.uk/checks-when-buying-a-used-car; its V5C and identifier checks illustrate the principle, but the process differs elsewhere. A mismatch should stop the transaction until the authority and a specialist explain it.
Identity and paperwork at the car
Match the car to its title or registration
Read the number directly from the vehicle rather than relying on an advertisement. Compare every character, the make and model, body style, colour, engine details where recorded, and the seller’s identity. Look for altered rivets, fresh paint around a stamping, distorted metal, inconsistent fonts, or a plate that does not fit the period. A legitimate replacement chassis or re-bodied car may have a lawful explanation, but you need documentary evidence before paying.

Use a three-way check
| Item | What to compare | What a discrepancy means |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle identifier | Characters and location against the correct make-and-year reference | Stop and obtain specialist or authority confirmation before proceeding |
| Title or registration | Identifier, vehicle description, owner and registration details | Ownership or identity is unresolved |
| Seller’s records | Invoices, inspection dates, restoration photos and modification history | Timeline or originality needs evidence, not assumptions |

Structural rust: the inspection that outranks cosmetics
Why a small area can be dangerous
The UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency states: “A relatively small amount of corrosion in an important part of a vehicle structure, where it compromises its load bearing capacity, can make a vehicle unsafe.” The significance depends on the vehicle’s construction and the location of the corrosion, not simply on the area you can see. The official corrosion guidance is at gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/appendix-a-structural-integrity-and-corrosion.
Inspect these areas first
- Chassis rails, frame sections, subframes, and crossmembers.
- Sills, floor pans, body mounts, and the joins between floor and inner panels.
- Suspension, steering, brake, and axle attachment points.
- Seat-belt anchorages and the surrounding structure.
- Wheel arches, spring seats, jacking points, and areas behind splash shields.
- Boot floor, spare-wheel well, battery tray, and water traps under carpets.
View the underside with a qualified person and, preferably, a lift. Never crawl beneath a car supported only by an emergency jack. DVSA’s UK test guidance uses a 30-centimetre area around relevant mountings when assessing prescribed structural zones; use that as an explanation of why nearby corrosion matters, not as a universal legal limit for your jurisdiction.
Distinguish surface rust from structural loss
Surface oxidation can be cleaned and protected, while perforation, delamination, crushed sections, or poorly executed patches may require metal replacement and alignment work. Tap tests, a screwdriver, or scraping can damage thin original metal and are not substitutes for a professional assessment. Ask the inspector to describe remaining thickness, repair method, and whether the repair restores the designed load path.
Bodywork, paint, and hidden previous repairs
Read the finish for evidence
Walk around the car in consistent daylight. Check colour changes between adjacent panels, waviness, overspray on rubbers or fasteners, uneven gaps, rough edges, paint cracking, bubbling, and panels that sit too high or low. A straight, glossy finish can cover filler or welded patches; a few imperfections may be more honest than a fresh coat with no supporting records.

Use a magnet only as a rough clue
A small magnet can indicate where a steel panel has non-magnetic filler, but it is not conclusive. Aluminium, stainless steel, double-skinned areas, thick paint, and some fillers defeat the test. Record suspicious locations for a specialist rather than declaring a panel original or unsafe from magnet results alone.

Look inside and underneath
Lift carpets where the seller permits, inspect door bottoms and drain holes, examine the boot and spare-wheel well, and check the underside of the bonnet and trunk lid. Search for dampness, standing water, seam sealer applied over rust, mismatched welding, and paint on wiring or hoses. Inspect window and door seals, glass edges, roof panels, and a convertible top for leaks that can rot hidden structure.
Mechanical systems and the cold-start test
See the car start from cold
Ask the seller not to warm the engine before you arrive. A cold start reveals battery weakness, choke or injection problems, excessive cranking, smoke, rattles, and oil-pressure or charging warnings that may disappear when warm. Observe the exhaust after start-up and during a safe drive; note persistent blue, white, or black smoke, misfires, overheating, fluid smells, and leaks.
Check controls, steering, brakes, and suspension
- Confirm that the steering has no excessive free play, binding, or pull.
- Apply the brakes progressively and note vibration, noise, pulling, or a pedal that sinks.
- Look for leaking dampers, broken springs, perished bushes, loose wheel bearings, and uneven tire wear.
- Check tire age, condition, size, load rating, and whether the set matches the car’s specification.
- Inspect wheels for cracks, bends, incorrect fasteners, and corrosion around the bead.
Inspect the engine, transmission, and exhaust
Look for oil, coolant, fuel, and brake-fluid leaks; damaged hoses; improvised wiring; overheating evidence; and missing guards. During a drive, check clutch take-up, gear selection, automatic-transmission engagement, differential noise, driveline vibration, and exhaust security. A short, quiet test does not prove durability, so include these observations in the written inspection and estimate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInterior, safety equipment, and completeness
Operate every switch and instrument: lighting, indicators, horn, wipers, heater, demister, gauges, charging warning, and fuel sender. Check seat frames, belts and their mountings, door latches, window mechanisms, dashboard structure, and fire or water damage. A missing trim piece may be inexpensive; a missing model-specific seat-belt anchor, instrument, glass item, or interior moulding can be difficult to source. Ask the inspector to distinguish safety parts from cosmetic or convenience items.
Check that the glass is undamaged in the driver’s view, seals are present, and doors, bonnet, boot, and tailgate latch securely. Confirm that the spare wheel, jack, tools, and wheel-changing points are present if you expect to use the car on the road.
Originality, modifications, and restoration history
Build an originality map
For each major component, record whether it is original, period-correct replacement, modern upgrade, replica, or unknown: engine, gearbox, axle, wheels, brakes, suspension, seats, instruments, paint, and trim. Matching-numbers claims require documentation from the manufacturer, marque club, or recognized specialist; visual appearance alone is not proof.

Assess modifications on their own merits
Disc brakes, electronic ignition, alternators, cooling upgrades, fuel-system changes, steering conversions, and safety belts can improve usability, but they may affect registration, insurance eligibility, emissions, originality, or value. Require invoices, installation details, and evidence that the work was engineered and tested properly. Undocumented holes, cut wiring, overheated cables, and incompatible parts are reasons for a specialist review.
Use restoration photographs
Photographs taken before welding and paint can show whether rust was removed or simply covered. Compare dates, odometer readings, parts invoices, and the current car. If the seller cannot document a claimed restoration, treat the result as an unverified repair rather than assigning it restoration value.
Do I need a classic-car inspection before I buy?
For a 1970s car, an independent inspection is the prudent default, especially when the vehicle is advertised as restored, modified, or structurally sound. Choose someone who knows the marque and its construction, not only a general roadworthiness tester. Give the inspector the seller’s records and ask for a written report that includes:
- Identity and document checks performed, with any limitations.
- Structural corrosion locations, metal condition, and repair quality.
- Mechanical findings for engine, transmission, steering, brakes, suspension, wheels, tires, electrical systems, and exhaust.
- Safety-critical defects that make a road test inappropriate.
- Recommended repairs separated into urgent, necessary for reliability, and cosmetic.
- A repair estimate or scope from which you can obtain independent quotations.
Ask the inspector to state what could not be removed, lifted, or tested. A report is an informed snapshot, not a guarantee, and hidden corrosion or intermittent faults can remain outside its access.
Road-test procedure and safety limits
- Confirm that the car is legally registered or permitted for the test, insured for your driver and use, and safe enough to move.
- Begin in a private or low-risk area. Check clutch, gearbox, steering response, brake balance, gauges, and warning lamps.
- Progress to normal speeds only when the car behaves predictably. Listen for wheel-bearing, differential, prop-shaft, suspension, and body noises.
- After stopping, look for fresh leaks, overheating, burning smells, or fluid pushed from reservoirs.
If the car is unregistered, uninsured, structurally doubtful, or mechanically unsafe, do not drive it on public roads. Arrange a transporter or have the qualified inspector examine it in place.

Paperwork to complete before payment and road use
Agree in writing what is included: keys, spare parts, manuals, tools, photographs, and any promised repairs. Record the agreed vehicle identifier, mileage, price, payment method, seller’s details, known defects, and date of handover. Complete the title transfer or registration process required by your authority, and obtain a receipt before releasing funds.
Ask your insurer how it will value the vehicle, what evidence supports that value, and whether use, mileage, storage, security, driver age, modifications, or eligibility restrictions apply. Terms vary by policy and state, so obtain the answer for your own location before driving the car. Arrange required inspection, registration, tax, and insurance in the correct order; do not assume historic status removes any of those obligations.

- Towel or mat for viewing underneath without lying on contaminated ground.
- Notebook or phone camera for recording identifiers, defects, and document references.
These tools help you decide whether to commission an inspection. They cannot replace a lift, paint-thickness or metal assessment by a qualified person, or a marque specialist’s knowledge of known weak points.
Red flags that should pause the purchase
- Identifier, title, or seller details do not match.
- The seller refuses a cold start, underside inspection, records request, or independent inspection.
- Fresh underseal, thick seam sealer, or paint hides suspected structural corrosion.
- Unsafe tires, brakes, steering, suspension, fuel leaks, or seat-belt mountings make a road test inappropriate.
- Restoration or matching-numbers claims have no invoices, photographs, or specialist confirmation.
- Modifications are undocumented or conflict with registration or insurance requirements.
- The seller pressures you to pay before title transfer or before you receive the inspection report.
A red flag does not automatically mean the car is worthless; it means the risk is unresolved. Pause, document the issue, obtain qualified advice, and renegotiate only from written evidence.
Jurisdiction examples and source guidance
UK buyers can review the DVLA used-vehicle checks at gov.uk/checks-when-buying-a-used-car and the historic-vehicle MOT exemption criteria at gov.uk/government/publications/historic-classic-vehicles-mot-exemption-criteria. The latter’s more-than-40-years and no-substantial-changes-in-30-years conditions apply to that UK policy, not automatically to another country. The structural corrosion principles come from the DVSA manual, while practical used-car inspection prompts are also covered by New Zealand’s transport agency and insurer-published checklists. Apply the inspection logic broadly, but confirm every legal, tax, registration, and insurance detail locally.
