A 60% gaming keyboard can free substantial desk space, but it removes the dedicated function row, arrow keys and navigation cluster found on larger boards. Before buying, confirm that you are comfortable using an Fn layer, choose a switch system that matches your preferred feel and games, and verify the exact model’s compatibility, software, connection, warranty and included parts. The 60% label describes a category, not identical specifications.
Understand what a 60% layout removes
A conventional 60% keyboard normally has 61 keys. It keeps the alphanumeric block, modifiers and a compact physical footprint while relocating less frequently used functions behind an Fn layer. Glorious’s June 30, 2026 buying guide describes the category as omitting the dedicated function row, navigation cluster and arrow-key group. Kinesis describes its TKO in the same way: the less-used keys are accessed through Fn combinations. See the Glorious layout guide and Kinesis TKO specifications for the manufacturers’ descriptions.
That arrangement can leave more room for broad mouse movements and make a setup easier to carry. It also means that a key you use constantly may require holding Fn or learning a secondary legend. The saved space is valuable only if the changed key access does not slow your work or play.

Check your daily key use
- List the keys you use in games, including arrows, F-keys, Insert, Delete, Home, End and Page Up/Down.
- Mark which of those keys you press repeatedly rather than occasionally.
- Try the same combinations on a compact keyboard, or use a keyboard tester that lets you hold Fn and another key, before committing.
- If dedicated arrows are important for spreadsheets, code navigation, editing or games, compare a 65% board. It adds arrow keys and usually a small navigation cluster.
- If you need a dedicated function row as well, compare a 75% model. A tenkeyless (TKL) board removes the numpad while retaining the function and navigation groups; a full-size board keeps all major clusters.
Layouts vary even within the 60% category. Confirm the printed legends, Fn combinations, right-side modifiers, regional ISO or ANSI arrangement and whether a model has a nonstandard bottom row. Do not assume that a 60% board’s secondary key positions match another manufacturer’s design.

Think about Fn-layer ergonomics
Look at the actual key combinations in the manual, not just a photograph. Some boards print secondary arrows, navigation commands or F-keys on the sides of the caps; others rely on software or a downloadable diagram. Check whether the Fn key is easy to hold with your thumb while reaching the intended key, and whether the board lets you remap the layer. A layout that is comfortable for occasional F5 or Delete presses may be frustrating if you constantly edit text, move through spreadsheets or use arrow keys in a game.
Also check how the board handles simultaneous combinations. Confirm that the shortcuts you need can be pressed together and that the manufacturer documents NKRO or another rollover mode if that matters to your use. These labels describe input handling, not a guarantee that every game accepts every remapped command.
Choose switch technology, feel and sound
Switch choice determines how a key feels and sounds under your fingers. The broad mechanical categories are:
| Switch type | What you feel and hear | Who may prefer it |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | Smooth travel without a tactile bump or intentional click | Players who want an uninterrupted press and buyers who prefer a quieter mechanical sound |
| Tactile | A noticeable bump during the press, without a click mechanism | Typists and gamers who want confirmation that a key actuated |
| Clicky | A tactile bump plus an audible click | People who enjoy pronounced feedback and do not share a noise-sensitive room |
Glorious presents linear switches as a common gaming choice, but that is manufacturer guidance rather than an independent finding that linear switches produce better results. Spring weight, lubrication, keycap material and case construction also change the experience. If possible, test the actual switch variant rather than relying on a switch color name.
Noise comes from more than the switch mechanism. A keycap hitting the plate, the case resonating and a key bottoming out can all be audible. A linear or tactile board is not automatically quiet, and a clicky board may be unsuitable near a microphone, sleeping family member or shared office. Ask whether the product uses the switch version you tested; availability of HyperX Red and Aqua variants, for example, differs by model and country.
Mechanical versus Hall-effect
Traditional mechanical switches use physical contacts. Hall-effect boards detect the position of a magnet and sensor, which allows features such as analog input, adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger when the manufacturer supports them. Those features can be useful for games that benefit from variable input or rapid reset, but they do not by themselves prove lower latency or better competitive performance.
Before choosing Hall-effect, confirm that the software, replacement parts and keycap set you want are intended for that board. A mechanical hot-swap socket and a Hall-effect sensor system are different designs; a familiar MX switch will not automatically work in a Hall-effect PCB.

Hot-swap sockets let you remove and replace compatible switches without soldering. Compatibility is not universal: a socket may accept only certain pin layouts, switch housings or electrical designs. A board designed for mechanical MX-style switches should not be assumed to accept Hall-effect switches, and vice versa.

The Kinesis TKO Barebones kit specifies support for both 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style switches. That statement applies to that kit, not every 60% keyboard. Check the exact socket standard, plate clearance and supported switch type before ordering replacements. If a board is not hot-swappable, changing switches normally requires soldering or a replacement PCB.
Compare real model specifications, not the form-factor label
Every 60% board does not include the same electronics, software or accessories. The following examples show why the product page for the exact regional SKU matters.
| Model | Switch system and features | Connection and compatibility | Included parts and support |
|---|---|---|---|
| HyperX Alloy Origins 60 | HyperX Red linear or Aqua tactile variants, depending on model and country; double-shot PBT keycaps with side-printed secondary functions; NGENUITY customization; manufacturer-rated switches for 80 million keypresses | Detachable cable; listed for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One | Keycap puller included; two-year warranty |
| Wooting 60HE+ | Lekker L60 Hall-effect switches, analog input, Rapid Trigger and adjustable actuation features | GH60 (60%) PCBA; USB-C to USB-A cable | Four-year warranty, excluding LEDs |
| Kinesis TKO Barebones | 3-pin or 5-pin MX-style hot-swap sockets; switches and keycaps sold separately | Wired USB Type-A; manufacturer-listed 1 ms response time; NKRO mode and Game Mode | One-year limited warranty; separate seven-day warranty period for switch sockets |
The HyperX durability figure is a manufacturer rating, not an independently verified lifespan test. The Wooting analog and Rapid Trigger specifications describe capabilities, not a controlled comparison proving a competitive advantage. The Kinesis 1 ms figure is the manufacturer’s listed response-time specification for the TKO Barebones. Treat all such numbers as model-specific claims unless independent testing establishes otherwise.
Availability, switch options, regional layouts and warranty terms can differ by country and SKU. Confirm the live product page and seller listing immediately before purchase.
Read the accessory list line by line
A detachable cable can simplify transport and replacement, but check its connector ends and length. A USB-C socket on the keyboard may be supplied with a USB-C-to-USB-A cable, as listed for the Wooting example, rather than a cable with USB-C plugs at both ends. A keycap puller is useful for maintenance, but it does not make a board hot-swappable; switch removal may still require soldering unless sockets are specified.
Check whether spare keycaps, alternate modifiers or a switch puller are included. Side-printed secondary legends can make a conventional 60% easier to learn, while a clean top surface may require keeping the manual nearby. If you intend to travel with the board, include a protective case in your budget even though it is not necessarily supplied.
Decide whether you want a complete keyboard or a barebones kit
Ready-to-use keyboard
A complete board includes switches and keycaps. It is the simpler choice if you want to plug in, configure software and play. Check whether the supplied keycaps print secondary Fn functions on the sides, whether a puller is included and whether the cable is detachable for transport or replacement.
Barebones kit
A barebones kit includes the case, PCB and related hardware but leaves switches and keycaps to you. It is useful when you already own compatible parts or want to tune feel and sound, but the advertised price does not represent a working keyboard until those parts are added.

For the standard Kinesis TKO layout, the manufacturer specifies a 6.25u spacebar and 1.25u bottom-row keys. Those measurements matter when choosing replacement keycaps: a set designed for a different bottom-row arrangement may leave keys unusable or misaligned. Verify the number of keys, stabilizer style, spacebar width, Shift widths and Enter shape as well as the switch pin standard.
Calculate the complete build cost before choosing a kit. Add the switch quantity, a keycap set that contains the required 6.25u spacebar and bottom-row sizes, stabilizers or replacement parts if they are not supplied, and any pullers or tools. Then compare that total with a ready-to-use board’s current price and warranty. A kit can offer customization, but it also creates more opportunities for an incompatible part or an assembly problem.
Verify connection, software and platform support
First decide whether wired operation is acceptable. A wired USB board avoids battery charging and wireless pairing, while a wireless model may be easier to move but introduces battery, receiver and operating-system considerations. Confirm the connector type on both the keyboard and your computer; USB-C on the keyboard does not mean the included cable has USB-C plugs at both ends.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Read the support list for the exact model rather than assuming that a keyboard works identically on every device. The HyperX Alloy Origins 60 page lists PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One compatibility, but a different revision may have different support. Console games can also restrict remapping or macro functions even when basic typing works.
Check that configuration software supports your operating system and that the features you want are stored onboard. Software may be required for remapping, macros, RGB effects or profiles; a board with onboard memory can retain settings when connected to another computer. Also check whether firmware updates require a desktop application, whether the application needs an account and whether profiles are limited to particular operating systems.
For a shared or tournament computer, find out what happens without the configuration application. Confirm the default layer, lighting and actuation settings, and whether a firmware update can be reversed if it causes a problem. Save a copy of custom mappings before changing firmware or switching computers.

Do not turn a manufacturer’s response-time or actuation figure into a universal ranking. No controlled independent head-to-head latency or competitive-advantage comparison is established here. A compact board may create more mouse room, as Kinesis says about its TKO, but that does not establish a performance gain for every player.

Compare the total ownership cost
For a complete board, include the keyboard, shipping, taxes where applicable and any replacement cable or keycap set you expect to buy. For a barebones kit, add switches, keycaps, stabilizers, tools and possibly a carrying case. Also account for the warranty period and the cost of obtaining compatible replacement switches. The lowest initial price is not necessarily the lowest cost if a proprietary switch or unavailable keycap set limits future changes.
Follow a pre-purchase checklist
- Map your keys: identify any arrow, function or navigation key you use often and test its Fn location.
- Confirm the physical layout: check 60% key count, ANSI or ISO region, modifier widths and bottom-row dimensions.
- Choose the switch experience: decide among linear, tactile, clicky or Hall-effect features based on feel, noise and game requirements.
- Check replacement flexibility: verify hot-swap status and the exact compatible switch standard; do not infer support from the word “mechanical.”
- Match the device: confirm operating-system, PC and console support for the exact model and game setup.
- Audit the software: check remapping, macros, lighting, profiles, firmware process and whether settings can be saved onboard.
- Calculate the complete cost: for barebones, add switches, keycaps, stabilizers if needed and any tools; for a complete board, confirm that all required accessories are included.
- Read support terms: note warranty duration, exclusions, regional coverage and any shorter coverage for parts such as switch sockets.
- Recheck the live listing: prices, stock, switch variants and included accessories can change, so compare the seller’s current SKU with the manufacturer’s page.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every 60% keyboard has arrow keys in the same place
Most conventional 60% boards place arrows behind Fn combinations, but the exact combinations and legends differ. Examine the manual or keycap side-printing before buying.
Buying switches that do not fit
“Hot-swappable” is not a universal connector standard. Confirm 3-pin or 5-pin MX-style support, socket compatibility and whether the PCB is intended for mechanical or Hall-effect switches.

Clicky switches can be audible across a room; tactile and linear boards can still produce bottom-out and keycap noise. Consider your microphone, office or household before selecting a switch solely by its gaming reputation.
Underestimating a barebones build
A kit without switches and keycaps cannot be used immediately. Confirm spacebar and bottom-row sizes, buy compatible parts and allow time for assembly and testing.
Reading a feature list as a performance guarantee
Analog input, adjustable actuation, Rapid Trigger, NKRO or a stated response time describe functions or manufacturer measurements. They do not guarantee faster reactions, lower real-world latency or better results in a particular game.
Forgetting regional and revision differences
A product name can cover several regional versions. Verify ANSI versus ISO, available switch options, console support, cable contents and the warranty shown for your country. Do not rely on a photograph or review of a different SKU.
When a 60% board is the right choice
Choose 60% when you value a small footprint, carry your keyboard, want maximum mouse space and are comfortable with Fn-based access. A complete board is the least complicated route; a hot-swap model gives you room to change compatible switches later; a Hall-effect model is worth considering when analog or adjustable actuation features are central to your games.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 60% keyboard have arrow keys?
A conventional 60% board usually has no dedicated arrow-key group. Arrows are commonly reached through an Fn layer, but the exact combinations vary, so check the manual and legends for the specific model.
Are 60% keyboard switches hot-swappable?
Some are and some are not. Hot-swap support must be stated for the exact board, and compatibility may be limited to 3-pin or 5-pin MX-style mechanical switches. Hall-effect and mechanical switch systems are not interchangeable by default.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a 60% or 65% keyboard better for gaming?
Neither layout is universally better. A 60% saves more space and may suit players comfortable with Fn shortcuts; a 65% adds dedicated arrows and usually a small navigation cluster for easier everyday access.
What is the difference between mechanical and Hall-effect 60% keyboards?
Mechanical boards use physical switch contacts. Hall-effect boards sense magnet position and may offer analog input, adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger when supported. Those features do not guarantee lower latency or better results.
What does a barebones 60% keyboard include?
A barebones kit generally provides the case, PCB and related hardware but not switches or keycaps. Add compatible switches, keycaps, required stabilizers and tools to calculate the usable total cost.
Will a 60% keyboard work with a console?
Compatibility is model-specific. HyperX lists its Alloy Origins 60 for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, but other boards or revisions may differ. Console software can also limit remapping and macros.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow long should a gaming keyboard warranty last?
Terms vary by model and region. The examples here list two years for HyperX, four years for Wooting excluding LEDs, and one year for Kinesis, with Kinesis noting a separate seven-day period for switch sockets. Confirm the live terms for your SKU.
Do manufacturer response-time and durability numbers prove performance?
No. The 80-million-keypress HyperX rating and Kinesis’s listed 1 ms response time are manufacturer specifications. Treat them as model-specific claims unless independent testing supports a comparison.
The Bottom Line
Before buying, verify the exact 60% layout and Fn shortcuts, switch technology and hot-swap standard, total cost, software, device compatibility, included accessories and warranty. If arrows or a function row are central to your routine, a 65%, 75% or TKL board may be the better value despite its larger footprint.
