The price to compare is the final payable total for the exact room and dates—not the first “from” rate. Before paying, expand every fee and tax line, verify what is included, read the selected rate’s cancellation, prepayment and no-show rules, and save the checkout details and confirmation.
Why a cheap hotel rate gets more expensive at checkout
Hotel listings often lead with a nightly room price. Checkout can add mandatory property charges, government taxes, deposits, optional extras you selected, or a different payment schedule. The only reliable comparison is the amount you will actually pay for the complete stay, with the same room, occupancy and inclusions.
Mandatory fees must be part of the displayed total in the United States
Under the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s lodging rule, a business must include mandatory fees in the total price it displays. The FTC explains: “The total price includes all charges or fees businesses know about and can calculate upfront.” A resort, destination, service or similar mandatory charge cannot be presented as an unavoidable surprise after a consumer has chosen the advertised price.
The FTC estimated in 2024 that its junk-fees rule for live-event tickets and short-term lodging could save consumers up to 53 million hours of search time per year. That estimate does not mean every booking will be cheaper; it reflects the time saved when people can compare meaningful totals earlier.

Taxes can be shown separately, but they still belong in your decision
Government taxes may be excluded from an advertised total in the United States, but the seller must disclose their amount and purpose before asking for payment and include them in the final payment amount. A page that shows a room price plus clearly identified taxes is different from one that hides mandatory property fees until the last screen.
The U.S. rule does not establish a universal hotel-tax percentage or a standard resort-fee amount. Taxes, tourism charges and property fees depend on the destination, property and booking channel, so use the figures shown for your reservation.
Make an apples-to-apples comparison before choosing a rate
A lower headline number is meaningful only when the offers describe the same stay. Change one variable—such as a cheaper room with no breakfast or a nonrefundable payment—and the prices are no longer direct substitutes.

Match the stay details
- Check-in and check-out dates, including the number of nights.
- Number of adults, children and rooms.
- Room category, bed configuration, smoking or nonsmoking status and accessibility requirements.
- Meal plan and other inclusions, such as breakfast or lounge access.
- Payment timing: pay now, pay part now, or pay at the property.
Compare the decision factors, not just the total

Compare totals only after you have selected the same options on each page. A flexible rate can cost more than a nonrefundable rate because it transfers less cancellation risk to you; that difference is part of the value, not an unexplained markup.
Read every line in the price breakdown
Use the link or button labeled “price details,” “breakdown,” “taxes and fees,” or similar before entering payment information. Expand collapsed sections on both mobile and desktop views.

Identify the nightly rate and stay total
Confirm whether the displayed room amount is per night, per room, per guest or for the entire stay. Multiply the nightly amount by the number of nights only as a check; the seller’s stay total may reflect different nightly prices, a minimum-stay rule or a promotion that applies to selected dates.
Separate mandatory charges from optional selections
Look for resort, destination, facility, service, cleaning or other property charges. Mark each as mandatory or optional. Optional parking, breakfast, airport transport, extra beds, pet charges, early check-in and late checkout should appear only if you select them, but verify that you have not left a preselected add-on in the basket.

Record each government tax and its stated purpose. Check whether the amount is an estimate that can change, or the final tax shown for the booking. A refundable security deposit or authorization at check-in is not the same as a room charge, but it affects available funds and should be noted. If a page does not explain whether a deposit is refundable, ask the property or seller before paying.
Check currency and payment timing
A foreign-currency conversion by your card issuer can differ from the seller’s displayed conversion. Note the currency of every amount. Then identify what is charged immediately, what is scheduled for a later date, and what must be paid at the property. “Pay at property” does not necessarily mean every fee is deferred; the terms may charge a deposit or taxes earlier.
Verify cancellation, prepayment and no-show rules for the selected room
Cancellation is a property- and rate-level term, not a guarantee attached to the hotel name. Marriott states that “Policies – including cancellation, no-show, and reservation change policies and other information about specific room reservations and properties — may vary by Property and by reservation type.” Select the exact room and rate, then read its policy rather than relying on a general hotel page.

Find the free-cancellation deadline
Write down the deadline exactly as displayed, including the hotel’s local time zone. “Free cancellation until Tuesday” is incomplete if the time is not shown. A deadline can be based on the property’s time, the booking channel’s time or a stated number of hours before arrival; use the wording in the reservation.

Determine the penalty after the deadline
Hilton notes that a cancellation after the hotel’s stated cancellation date may incur a fee that varies by hotel. The penalty may be a fixed amount, the first night, a percentage or the full reservation. Do not infer the amount from another room or date at the same property.
Check whether payment is refundable
- Fully refundable: The stated amount is returned when you cancel within the permitted window, subject to the rate’s conditions.
- Partially refundable: A portion can be returned, while a deposit or specified nights remain charged.
- Nonrefundable: The payment normally cannot be recovered even if plans change, except where the written terms provide an exception.
- Prepaid: Payment is taken before arrival; cancellation rights still depend on the selected rate.
“Pay later” and “refundable” describe different things. A rate can be charged later yet remain nonrefundable, or be prepaid and refundable until a stated deadline.
Read no-show and modification language
A no-show occurs when nobody arrives by the property’s stated deadline without cancelling. Booking.com documents that cancellation, prepayment and no-show penalties are tied to the property and room rate. Find whether the charge covers the first night or the full stay, and whether the reservation is cancelled after that charge.
Also check how to change dates, reduce the number of nights, change the guest name or switch rooms. A modification may be treated as a cancellation and rebooking, with the new rate and new policy. Early departure can still incur the remaining-night charge when the rate does not permit shortening the stay.

Confirm what the rate includes before you value the “deal”
Inclusions can explain why two totals differ. Verify them in the room description and the rate conditions, not only in a search-result badge.
- Breakfast: confirm the number of guests covered and whether it is daily.
- Wi-Fi: check whether access is included for all devices or only a basic tier.
- Parking: establish whether spaces are guaranteed and whether a daily charge applies.
- Resort or facility access: check opening dates, reservation requirements and any separate fee.
- Extra-person and child fees: enter the correct ages and occupancy before comparing totals.
- Bed configuration: a request for a particular bed may not be guaranteed even when the room category is correct.
If an amenity matters to your decision, save its inclusion wording with the reservation. A marketing description can change, while the booked rate’s conditions identify what was part of your purchase.
Use this checkout procedure every time
- Enter the complete stay. Set dates, guests, rooms and any child ages before reviewing rates.
- Choose the exact room. Confirm bed type, occupancy limits and accessibility or smoking requirements.
- Open the full price breakdown. Record nightly charges, mandatory fees, taxes, deposits and selected extras.
- Check the amount’s scope. Verify which figures are per night, per room, per guest or for the entire stay.
- Read payment timing. Note charges due now, later or at the property, plus the currency used.
- Open the rate conditions. Find the cancellation deadline, time zone, prepayment terms, no-show penalty, modification rules and early-departure terms.
- Review inclusions. Confirm breakfast, Wi-Fi, parking, resort access and extra-person or child charges.
- Compare alternatives. Put the all-in total and flexibility of each otherwise comparable offer side by side.
- Save the evidence. Capture or download the checkout page and confirmation before leaving the screen.
- Set a reminder. Add the cancellation deadline to your calendar with enough time to act.
Save proof of what you booked
Keep a screenshot or PDF of the final checkout page and the confirmation email. The record should show:
- Booking number and seller or property contact.
- Guest name, dates, number of guests and room type.
- Total price, taxes and mandatory fees.
- What was paid, what remains due and the payment currency.
- Cancellation deadline and penalty after that deadline.
- Prepayment, no-show, modification and early-departure terms.
- Included amenities and any selected extras.
Save the policy text as it appeared when you booked, not just a link that may later display updated terms. If the confirmation conflicts with the checkout page, contact the seller promptly and keep the written response.

The FTC lodging rule is U.S.-specific. It does not make one worldwide standard for taxes, tourism charges, resort fees, cancellation windows or no-show penalties. Outside the United States, local disclosure laws may differ. Even within one country, the property, dates, room type and seller can change the total and the conditions.

A hotel’s general policy cannot override a stricter or more generous condition attached to your selected rate unless the reservation terms say so. The booking confirmation is the practical reference for your stay. When a third-party seller takes payment, check whether the seller or the property handles cancellation and which contact method the confirmation specifies.
If the amount or policy changes before payment
Stop before entering payment details and compare the new total with the earlier screen. Expand the breakdown again to identify whether the difference is a newly selected option, a tax recalculation, a currency display or a mandatory fee that was not previously visible. Verify the dates and guest count; changing either can change the rate.
If the final page still does not clearly identify a mandatory charge, cancellation deadline or payment obligation, do not rely on an assumption. Ask the seller or property for the exact amount and written policy, then save the reply. If the answer does not match the confirmation you need, choose a rate whose terms are understandable before paying.

Use the comparison after the totals are complete:
- Plans are firm: A nonrefundable or prepaid rate may be appropriate only when you accept the stated loss if plans change.
- Plans may change: Price the value of free cancellation through the deadline, and set a reminder before it expires.
- Arrival is uncertain: Give special weight to the no-show penalty and whether a missed arrival cancels the rest of the stay.
- Cash flow matters: Compare what is charged now with what is due later, including any property deposit.
- Amenity is essential: Treat included breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi or access as part of the price only when the rate conditions explicitly include it.
The cheapest hotel rate is the one whose final total and conditions match your actual needs. A transparent, refundable offer can be the better value when it prevents a larger cancellation or no-show loss.
