Before bidding, verify the exact set, establish what the lot actually contains, separate authenticity evidence from condition claims, and calculate the full cost under that auction’s terms. If a key fact remains unverified—especially completeness—treat it as risk in your bid ceiling rather than assuming the most favorable outcome.

1. Prove which LEGO set the lot is

Find the set number first

Ask the auction house for the set number and match it against the box, instructions, or other identifying details visible in the lot photographs. LEGO describes numbers as a quick way to identify a set. The number can lead you to the set’s official page, building instructions, and replacement-piece information, making it the most practical starting point for checking whether the catalogue description refers to the model you think it does.

Do not rely on a model name alone. Similar names, regional packaging, later reissues, and adjacent set numbers can describe materially different lots. Record the complete number exactly as shown, including any suffix or regional distinction, then compare the images with the official instructions. The instructions show the intended model and its required parts; they do not prove that those parts are physically present in the auction lot.

Check the edition and packaging clues

Compare the box artwork, logo treatment, instruction-booklet cover, and any edition or release markings with the identified set. If the box is absent, ask what other evidence establishes identity. An assembled model can support identification, but it is not by itself proof that every part belongs to the stated set.

2. Translate the listing’s condition words

Words such as “sealed,” “complete,” and “unchecked” are not interchangeable. BrickLink’s published condition definitions provide useful vocabulary, but they do not guarantee that an unrelated auction house uses the terms in exactly the same way. Read the sale’s own definitions and ask the auctioneer to explain any ambiguous label in writing.

Listing wording What it may establish What you still need to verify
Sealed BrickLink defines a sealed new set as having intact factory seals, with contents presumed sealed, intact, complete, and untampered with as shipped. BrickLink also states that “the seller cannot guarantee that a sealed set is complete.” Confirm that seals are factory seals, inspect for tampering, and decide how much uncertainty you accept.
Complete For a used complete set, BrickLink’s definition covers all parts needed for the models in the instructions and the original stickers. Packaging and extra parts are not necessarily included. Confirm minifigures, alternate models, accessories, instructions, stickers, and the box separately.
Unchecked for completeness or correctness The seller has not established that the contents are complete or correctly matched. Missing or substituted parts remain unresolved. Price the lot as unverified, not as a confirmed complete set.
Incomplete The lot should identify missing contents. Check whether the stated omissions include figures, printed elements, stickers, instructions, accessories, or packaging that matter to your use or valuation.

If a catalogue says “unchecked for completeness or correctness,” treat that wording as a substantive condition disclosure. It means the auction has not established either completeness or correct contents; it is not a neutral synonym for “probably complete.”

3. Audit the contents that affect collectability

Minifigures, printed parts, and stickers

Ask specifically whether every minifigure shown or promised is included, along with its correct accessories and distinctive elements. Printed pieces, stickered panels, rare colors, and unusual accessories can be more difficult to replace than ordinary bricks. A wide photograph may not show whether a figure has the correct torso, head, headgear, weapons, or printed detail, so request sharp, lot-specific images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BrickLink’s marketplace policy requires a set without its minifigures to be listed as incomplete on that marketplace. That policy is not a rule governing another auction, but it is a useful reason to ask the auction house directly whether figures are present and included in the stated condition.

Instructions, stickers, and alternate builds

Clarify whether original instructions are included and whether they are complete, readable, and associated with the stated set. Ask if the original sticker sheet is present and unused, applied, damaged, or absent. If the instructions cover alternate models, establish whether the parts for those models are included or whether “complete” refers only to the primary build.

Box, packaging, and extra parts

Do not assume that a “complete” used set includes the original box, inner packaging, spare elements, or promotional inserts. BrickLink’s used-complete definition does not necessarily include packaging or extra parts. Have the auction house state these items separately in the condition report so you can compare lots consistently.

Request evidence that a catalogue image cannot provide

Ask for close-ups of factory seals, box corners, instruction covers, minifigure faces and torsos, sticker sheets, printed elements, and any areas where parts appear mixed or damaged. Request photographs of the actual lot rather than stock images or a generic picture of the assembled model. Save the images and written answers with the lot number; they are your record of what was represented before bidding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Treat authenticity as a separate investigation

Why a legitimate-looking lot can remain unverified

A LEGO logo, an assembled model, or a confident seller description does not answer every authenticity question. Replica boxes, copied instructions, substituted elements, and mixed contents can leave the identity or provenance uncertain. BrickLink prohibits counterfeit items, including replica boxes and photocopied instructions, in its listings; that platform rule is not an authentication of an individual auction lot.

Ask for provenance when it changes your risk

For a valuable or unusually rare set, ask where the item came from, how it was stored, and whether the seller has purchase records or other provenance. Provenance is supporting evidence, not a guarantee, so compare it with the physical photographs and the condition description. If the auction house cannot verify a material point, record it explicitly as unknown rather than converting silence into reassurance.

Separate authenticity from condition

An authentic set can still be incomplete, damaged, stickered, or incorrectly described. Conversely, a complete-looking lot can contain counterfeit or substituted pieces. Keep two separate notes in your evaluation: what supports that the set is genuine, and what supports that the contents and condition match the listing.

5. Use inspection access before the sale

Read the catalogue and conditions of sale for the inspection schedule, location, registration requirements, and whether examination is physical, by appointment, or limited to photographs. If inspection is available, use the set number and your contents checklist rather than relying on a quick visual impression.

  • Match the box or instructions to the stated set number.
  • Look for broken or replaced seals, opened bags, crushed corners, moisture damage, and signs that parts have been repacked.
  • Check that minifigures, printed pieces, sticker sheets, instructions, and accessories shown in the description are actually present.
  • Ask whether the auction house permits handling, counting, or only visual inspection.
  • Photograph or note discrepancies before the auction closes and ask how they should be reported.

If you cannot inspect the lot, downgrade the certainty of every unverified claim. A seller’s inability or refusal to provide a close-up is information about risk, even when it is not proof of a defect.

6. Read the actual auction terms

The auction house and jurisdiction determine your rights and obligations. Do not substitute a marketplace’s policies for the sale’s own conditions. BrickLink’s terms, for example, say that the platform is not part of transactions between its buyers and sellers and disclaims control over listing accuracy and transaction completion; that limitation applies to BrickLink and cannot be generalized to an unnamed auction house.

Term to locate Question to answer before bidding Why it affects your ceiling
Buyer’s premium What percentage or fixed charge is added to the hammer price? It raises the amount you actually pay.
Taxes Which taxes apply, and are they calculated on the hammer price, premium, shipping, or another base? The same winning bid can produce different totals by location and sale rules.
Payment deadline When is payment due, which methods are accepted, and what happens after a missed deadline? Late charges, loss of the lot, or other remedies may apply under the contract.
Shipping or collection Is shipping offered, what is charged, and can the lot be collected in person? Large boxes, insurance, and remote collection can materially change cost and effort.
Inspection and returns Can you inspect before bidding, and are returns allowed for misdescription or only in narrow circumstances? Limited remedies increase the cost of uncertainty.
Discrepancy process How and when must you report a material difference between the listing and the lot? A short notice period can determine whether a problem is actionable.

Save the version of the catalogue and conditions that applied when you bid. If an answer from staff conflicts with the written terms, request clarification before placing a bid and rely on the enforceable sale conditions rather than an informal assumption.

7. Build a bid ceiling from total cost and evidence

Start with comparable lots

Compare the same set number and edition in a similar state: sealed, opened but complete, built, or explicitly unchecked. A sealed lot and a used complete lot carry different evidence and risks; they should not be treated as interchangeable comparables. Match the presence or absence of figures, stickers, instructions, box, extra parts, and distinctive elements before using a past sale as a reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No set number, dated comparable sale, estimate, buyer’s premium, jurisdiction, or current market value is established here, so a responsible numeric bid ceiling cannot be supplied. The missing figures must come from the actual auction and comparable evidence for the exact set.

Use an all-in calculation

Write the ceiling as a total-cost calculation rather than a hammer-price guess:

Maximum hammer bid = total amount you are willing to spend − buyer’s premium − applicable taxes − shipping or collection costs − expected replacement or restoration costs.

Use the auction’s stated rates and your documented parts risk. If a missing item cannot be identified or priced, treat that uncertainty as a deduction from your ceiling instead of assuming the cheapest replacement. Keep separate ceilings for a verified lot and an unchecked lot; the latter should not inherit the former’s value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Compare two lots on a like-for-like basis

Comparison axis Questions to record for each lot
Identity and edition Is the exact set number confirmed by box, instructions, or other lot-specific evidence?
State Is it factory sealed, opened, built, incomplete, or unchecked for completeness or correctness?
Contents Are minifigures, stickers, printed parts, instructions, accessories, alternate-model parts, and extra elements included?
Packaging Is the original box and inner packaging present, and what condition are they in?
Authenticity and provenance What physical evidence and ownership history support genuineness?
Inspection and remedies Can you inspect, and what process applies if the lot materially differs from its description?
Total cost What is the amount after the sale’s premium, taxes, shipping or collection, and expected replacement parts?

A lot with a lower estimate is not automatically cheaper if it has weaker evidence, fewer included components, or more restrictive remedies. Record “not stated” where the catalogue does not establish a value or inclusion; do not fill the gap with an assumption.

9. Warning signs and the appropriate response

Warning sign Response before bidding
No set number or conflicting numbers Request the number and matching photographs. Until resolved, do not treat the lot as identified.
“Sealed” without clear seal photographs Ask for close-ups and whether the seals are factory-applied. Keep completeness separate from seal condition.
“Complete” with no contents breakdown Ask about figures, stickers, instructions, accessories, packaging, and extra parts individually.
“Unchecked” or “as found” wording Assume completeness and correctness are unknown and reduce the ceiling accordingly.
Only a stock image or distant view Request sharp, lot-specific images of distinctive and value-sensitive components.
Authenticity asserted without supporting evidence Request provenance and physical details; document anything that remains unverified.
Unclear premium, tax, shipping, or return terms Obtain the written conditions before bidding or treat the missing cost and remedy as unacceptable risk.

10. A practical pre-bid workflow

  1. Identify: Write down the exact set number and edition indicated by the lot.
  2. Cross-check: Compare the box, instructions, and photographs with the official model reference.
  3. Decode the label: Ask what the auction means by sealed, complete, incomplete, or unchecked.
  4. Inventory the important contents: Confirm minifigures, printed and stickered elements, stickers, instructions, accessories, packaging, and extra parts.
  5. Evaluate authenticity: Review close-ups and provenance separately from condition evidence.
  6. Inspect or request evidence: Use the preview appointment or obtain written answers and lot-specific images.
  7. Read the contract: Record premium, taxes, payment deadline, shipping or collection, inspection rights, returns, and discrepancy procedures.
  8. Set the ceiling: Compare like-for-like evidence, subtract every known cost and expected replacement expense, and stop when the bidding exceeds the documented limit.

Final decision rule

Bid only when you can state, in writing, which set the lot is, which components are confirmed, which claims remain uncertain, what the sale will cost in total, and what remedy exists if the description is materially wrong. If the lot is explicitly unchecked or the evidence needed to verify a rare component is missing, the rational choice may be to pass rather than pay a verified-complete price for an unverified set.
