For a normal Best Buy store pickup, wait until you receive the separate “Ready for pickup” notice. Then bring a government-issued photo ID and your order number. The order-confirmation email only confirms that the order was placed; it does not mean the item is ready at the store.
Check the pickup instructions in your order, verify the location’s hours, and allow extra preparation time for warehouse collections, phones with service plans, curbside orders, or large products.

The standard Best Buy pickup checklist
Most customers need only two things at the store:
- A government-issued photo ID. Use an identification document that Best Buy can use to verify the person collecting the order.
- Your order number. Keep it available in the order-confirmation email, the Best Buy account’s order details, or another record you can show to the associate.
Do not leave for the store until the order status changes to ready and you receive the separate “Ready for pickup” message. Best Buy’s official guidance says to bring your ID and order number to the store; the readiness notice is the signal that the store has completed preparation.
What to do before you leave home
1. Confirm that the order is actually ready
An order-confirmation email is sent after checkout and is separate from the readiness notification. A ship-to-store order can take an estimated three to seven business days to arrive before store preparation begins. That estimate is not a promise that an order placed today will be ready immediately.

Open Order Details or the latest email and look specifically for the ready status. If the status still says processing, preparing, or in transit, going to the store early may result in an unsuccessful trip.
2. Check the correct location and hours
Pickup instructions can differ between a regular retail store, a warehouse, and a location offering curbside service. Confirm the address, pickup area, and hours shown for your order. Warehouse hours may not match the connected retail store’s hours.
3. Plan for the item you ordered
Large products can have substantially larger packages than their product dimensions suggest. Measure the vehicle’s cargo opening and interior, fold or remove seats if appropriate, and bring whatever you need to keep the package stable during transport. If the item will not fit safely, arrange a different vehicle before arriving.

4. Put the order information somewhere accessible
You do not need to depend on a paper printout if you can reliably open the order number on your phone or in your Best Buy account. Before leaving, make sure you can sign in or open the confirmation and readiness messages. If another person is collecting the order, send that person the order number and the pickup details in advance.
Where you go inside a regular store
Best Buy directs customers to the Store Pickup area inside the store. Look for the Store Pickup sign or ask an employee near the entrance. Some locations have reserved pickup parking, but those spaces are not universal; do not assume that ordinary parking is a pickup check-in area.
Have the order number and ID ready before you reach the desk. An associate will use the order information to locate the prepared package and verify that the person collecting it is authorized.
Can someone else collect the order?
Yes, but the other person must be designated on the order. During checkout, use the alternate pickup option and enter that person’s name, email address, and phone number. Best Buy says only the purchaser or the person designated for pickup can collect the items.

Products that may not allow a friend or family pickup
The alternate pickup option described by Best Buy does not apply to every product. The listed exclusions include:
- Cell phones and other activated devices
- Point-of-sale activated gift cards
- Digital games
- Best Buy for Business products
- Products that are currently inactive
For an excluded product, check the order’s instructions and plan for the required purchaser or contract holder to appear in person.
Pickup-mode requirements at a glance
| Pickup mode | Who can collect | What to bring or prepare | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular in-store pickup | The purchaser or a person designated on the order | Government-issued photo ID and order number | Wait for the separate ready notification and use the Store Pickup area. |
| Curbside pickup | The purchaser or an eligible designated person, subject to the order rules | Ready notification, check-in instructions, ID, order confirmation, and payment card available | Availability and identity checks vary by store and order. |
| Warehouse pickup | The purchaser or person permitted by the order | Government-issued photo ID, order number, and the credit card used to pay | Warehouse schedules differ from retail-store hours; bring vehicle-securing materials. |
| Phone or device with a service plan | The person named on the contract | Required identification and the order information | The contract holder must be present because the device is pre-activated for pickup. |
| Large or oversized item | The eligible purchaser or designated pickup person | Normal identification and order information, plus a suitable vehicle and securing materials | Packaging may be larger than the advertised product dimensions. |
Special case: phones and devices with plans
For a phone or mobile device connected to a service plan, the person named on the contract must be present. Best Buy says the device is pre-activated and that basic activation instructions are provided at pickup.
This requirement is different from an ordinary accessory or unlocked product. If the contract holder cannot attend, contact Best Buy through the order’s support options before traveling to the store rather than sending an alternate pickup person who is not named on the contract.
Special case: curbside pickup
For curbside orders, wait for the ready notification and follow the check-in directions in the email, text message, or Best Buy app.
Best Buy says associates may use different methods to verify identity. Keep your government-issued ID, order confirmation, and payment card available even if the check-in begins in the app. Curbside service is not offered for every store or every order, so use the instructions attached to that specific purchase.
Curbside is a different collection point, not a way to bypass the readiness requirement. Arriving before the ready message can leave staff without a prepared package, and arriving at a store that does not offer curbside for your order can send you to the regular pickup desk instead.
Special case: warehouse pickup
Warehouse collection has additional preparation requirements. Bring:

Review the warehouse schedule through the pickup confirmation or Order Details. A warehouse may close earlier, open later, or observe different hours than the nearby retail store.
Bring straps, blankets, tie-downs, or other materials appropriate for securing the packaged item. Make sure the vehicle can carry the package without blocking the driver’s view or creating an unsafe load. If you are collecting an appliance, television, furniture-sized product, or another bulky purchase, allow extra loading time.
Warehouse instructions take priority over assumptions based on a nearby Best Buy store. Confirm the exact entrance and collection process shown for that order, and keep the payment card accessible even when the order number and ID are already in your account.

Check package size, not just product size
Retail listings commonly emphasize the dimensions of the assembled product. The boxed dimensions can be greater, and protective foam or a pallet can add more width and height. Use the packaging information in the order or product details when available.
Check the vehicle’s access points
A package may fit inside a vehicle once the seats are folded but still fail to pass through the hatch or door opening. Measure the narrowest opening and compare it with the packaged item. A roof rack or open-bed transport requires an appropriate cover and secure tie-down points.
Secure the load before leaving
Do not place a heavy package where it can slide, tip, or block mirrors. Bring the securing materials before you arrive, rather than assuming the store will supply them. If the planned vehicle is unsuitable, return with one that accommodates the packaged dimensions or use another delivery arrangement.
Payment and identification exceptions
New Best Buy Credit Card
If you paid with a newly opened Best Buy Credit Card and have not received the physical card, tell the store associate when you arrive. The account may exist even though there is no plastic card to present.
Why the payment card can matter
The payment card is specifically called out for warehouse pickup and may be requested during curbside identity verification. For a normal in-store pickup, the standard checklist is the government-issued ID and order number, but keeping the payment method accessible can help with a special pickup flow.

What happens when you arrive
- Verify the status before departing. Confirm the ready notification, location, and closing time.
- Gather your documents. Put your government-issued ID and order number where you can retrieve them quickly. Add the payment card and contract-holder information if your pickup type requires them.
- Go to the correct pickup point. Use the Store Pickup desk inside a retail store, the marked curbside spaces for a curbside order, or the warehouse entrance specified in the instructions.
- Present the order information. Give the associate the order number and requested identification. A designated alternate pickup person must present their own ID, not the purchaser’s.
- Inspect the package and load it safely. For a large item, confirm that the package is intact and that it fits your planned transport method before leaving the loading area.
How long Best Buy holds a pickup order
Best Buy says standard store-pickup items are held for five days. If you do not collect the order within that period, Best Buy cancels it and refunds the payment method.
If you need more time, open Order Details and look for an extension option. An extension is not guaranteed for every order, so request it before the five-day window expires. Keep checking the order status rather than assuming the store will continue holding the item automatically.
The five-day period applies to the prepared pickup order, so waiting for a readiness notice before traveling does not shorten the period unnecessarily. Once the item is ready, note the deadline shown in Order Details and plan around the store or warehouse’s actual operating hours.

The order-confirmation email arrived, but there is no ready email
Do not treat the confirmation as permission to go. Check Order Details for the current status, including whether the item is still shipping to the store or being prepared. If the expected ship-to-store window has passed without a readiness notice, use the support option attached to the order.
You cannot find the order number
Search the confirmation and readiness messages, then sign in to the Best Buy account used for the purchase and open Order Details. If another person is collecting the package, send that person the order number before they leave; an ID alone does not replace the order information.
The pickup person has the wrong name on the order
Only the purchaser or the person designated for pickup is eligible. Update the pickup person through Order Details before attempting collection. An undeclared relative, friend, or coworker may be refused even if they have the purchaser’s email or payment card.
The store appears closed
Check the location and hours in the pickup instructions, especially for warehouse orders. Warehouse schedules can differ from retail-store schedules, and local hours can change. If the order is still within its holding period, return during the listed pickup hours or request an extension if necessary.

Do not attempt an unsafe load. Ask the associate about available options and return with a vehicle that accommodates the packaged dimensions and provides proper tie-down points. The five-day holding window still applies unless the order details show an approved extension.

The order is for a phone, but the purchaser cannot attend
Do not assume the regular alternate-pickup process applies. The person named on the service contract must be present for a plan-connected phone or device. Use the order’s support options before going to confirm what can be changed.
Questions to check before leaving
- Did I receive the separate “Ready for pickup” notice?
- Is the address the retail store, a warehouse, or a curbside location?
- Do I have my government-issued photo ID and order number?
- If someone else is collecting, are their name, email, and phone number entered on the order?
- Does the product fall under an exclusion such as an activated phone, digital game, or point-of-sale activated gift card?
- For a warehouse or curbside order, do I have the payment card used for purchase?
- Will the packaged item fit through the vehicle opening and remain secure during transport?
- Is the five-day pickup period approaching its deadline, and does Order Details show an extension option?
A quick decision checklist
- Ordinary store pickup: ready notification, government-issued photo ID, order number, and the correct Store Pickup location.
- Someone else is collecting: designate that person on the order first; they bring their own ID and the order number.
- Phone with a plan: the contract holder attends in person.
- Curbside: follow the email, text, or app check-in instructions and keep ID, order confirmation, and payment card available.
- Warehouse: add the payment card used for purchase, verify warehouse hours, and prepare to secure the package.
- Large item: confirm packaging dimensions and vehicle capacity before leaving home.
- Timing: collect the order within five days or check Order Details for an extension.
These requirements reflect Best Buy’s U.S. pickup guidance checked on October 13, 2026. Because local hours, pickup availability, and operational instructions can change, the current ready notice and Order Details for your purchase take priority.
