Before joining a genetic research study, ask what the researchers will collect, how they will protect and share it, whether you can stop later, and what—if anything—you will learn from the results. The answers depend on the specific study, so read the current consent form and ask the study team to explain any terms or limits you do not understand. This guide reflects U.S. NIH and NHGRI guidance; it is general information, not legal or clinical advice.
Start by confirming what kind of study this is
Ask the study team to explain the research question in ordinary language: what are they trying to learn, and how might your participation help? Also ask who sponsors or funds the study, why you were invited, and whether it is research rather than a clinical test or treatment. A research study may analyze genetic information to answer a broader question; participation does not by itself mean you are receiving a diagnostic test or medical care.
NIH consent guidance says the consent process should explain the study’s purpose, sponsor, underlying science, and goals. Read those sections and ask for clarification if they do not explain what the researchers are investigating or why your participation is relevant. NIH’s consent-form guidance describes these elements.

Ask for a step-by-step account of what participation involves, not just the name of the study or the type of genetic analysis. The details determine the time commitment, inconvenience, and what information leaves your medical record or is created about you.

- What samples will be collected, such as blood, saliva, or tissue, and how will they be collected?
- What genetic analyses will be performed? Will researchers also collect health information, family history, or other personal details?
- Will the study access existing medical records? If so, which records and for what purpose?
- How many appointments, calls, questionnaires, or other contacts should I expect? How long does participation last?
- What will I need to do between visits, and whom should I contact if I cannot complete a procedure or appointment?
- Will any procedure have physical risks or require preparation, follow-up, or time away from work or school?
Compare the answers with the consent form’s descriptions of sample collection, generated data, procedures, participant responsibilities, and study duration. NIH and the National Cancer Institute identify these as matters to understand during consent. The National Cancer Institute’s guide to informed consent forms can help you locate these details in a form.
What are the risks, and what protections apply?
Ask the study team to describe risks in categories that matter to you. Some risks can come from sample collection or other procedures. Others may be emotional or social: for example, learning a finding could cause worry, or information could have implications for family relationships. There are also privacy risks. Genetic information can be identifying or informative about biological relatives even when direct identifiers such as your name are removed.
Ask what safeguards the study uses for identifiable information, who is permitted to see it, and what happens if information is shared or accessed improperly. Request concrete explanations rather than relying only on a general statement that data are confidential. Ask whether access is limited to approved people or organizations, and whether the study has exceptions to its confidentiality commitments. The exact protections and risks are study-specific; NHGRI’s guidance on special considerations for genomics research explains why consent should address genomic data and sample use.

Who will see my genetic data, and what happens to my sample?
Find out how long the study expects to keep your sample and data, where they will be stored, and who can access them. Ask whether information will be shared with outside researchers or placed in a research repository. If it will be shared, ask whether access is controlled—such as requiring approval—or unrestricted, and what information accompanies the genetic data.
Ask the team to point to the consent language that describes permitted uses. Does it limit use to the current project, allow related future research, or allow a broader range of studies? Can the sample or data be shared with researchers at other institutions? Could it be used in work you might not personally support? Do not assume that removing your name means the information can never be linked back to you.
The consent process should explain the uses for which genomic data and samples may be shared, according to NHGRI. For certain NIH-covered studies, the NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy addresses broad sharing and repository access terms. That policy does not mean every genetic study uses the same repository or sharing conditions: ask which terms apply to this study and where they appear in the consent form.

Can I withdraw later, and what can withdrawal actually change?
Ask how to stop participating, whom to contact, and what happens to samples and information already collected. Clarify separately whether stopping future appointments also stops new data collection, future analysis of stored material, or future sharing. Ask whether the team can destroy unused samples or remove data that have not yet been shared, and what limits apply once information has been distributed, combined with other data, or analyzed.

The right to stop future participation does not necessarily mean researchers can retrieve or erase material already shared or used.
Will I get my genetic results?
Do not assume the study will return individual findings. Ask whether participants receive individual results, findings unrelated to the study’s main question (sometimes called secondary findings), only group-level results, or no results. If results may be offered, ask which findings qualify, whether you can choose what kinds you want to receive, and when and how the team would contact you.

Ask whether a research finding will be confirmed with a clinical test before it is shared, who will explain its meaning, and whether genetic counseling or medical follow-up is available. Research findings are not automatically a clinical diagnosis. A result may be uncertain or its meaning may change as scientific knowledge develops. Ask what the study does if a finding is reinterpreted later, and whether you can update your contact information during the study.
Also ask what no contact means. If a study does not return results, or does not contact you, that does not establish that you have no genetic risk. The study’s policy may reflect its purpose, procedures, or limits on interpreting research results rather than a comprehensive assessment of your health. NIH consent guidance addresses return-of-results considerations; ask the team to explain the policy stated in your form.

Genetic findings can have implications for biological relatives because relatives may share genetic variants. Ask whether a result could be relevant to family members, whether the study expects you to share it, and whether the researchers have a policy for communicating findings to relatives. Ask whether the study offers guidance or counseling for discussing results with family, while recognizing that its role may be limited.

Consider in advance who you would want to tell if a finding were returned and what you would want explained. NIH advises participants to consider whether and how family members might want results shared. The study team can clarify its process, but you should not assume that researchers will contact relatives directly.
What will participation cost, and is there compensation?
Ask whether you will be reimbursed for travel, parking, meals, childcare, or other participation-related expenses, and whether compensation is offered. Clarify the amount, timing, and conditions for payment, including what happens if you withdraw or miss a visit. Payment details vary by study, so use the consent form or written information from the team rather than assuming compensation is standard.
Ask whether joining or declining affects your ordinary medical care, insurance, or relationship with your clinicians. The study team should explain any responsibilities expected of you and any potential benefits described in the consent form. Do not treat possible contribution to research as a guaranteed personal health benefit.

How to compare consent forms and make a decision
If you are considering more than one study, compare the actual consent forms rather than generic assurances about privacy or participant benefits. A short comparison can make differences in burden and data use easier to see.

Before deciding, write down unanswered questions and ask the study contact person to answer them in plain language. Request the current consent form, take time to review it, and ask for a copy of any explanations that affect your decision. You can decide not to participate if the study’s procedures, data-sharing terms, or result policy do not fit your preferences.
