Before you pay for a Fab Lab class, ask seven practical questions: Is the class suitable for your child’s age and experience? Must an adult stay? Which tools will children use, and what training is required? What hazards and protective equipment apply? Are materials and machine fees included? Which consent, emergency, pickup, and privacy forms are required? What happens if your child is ill, the class is canceled, or plans change?
Fab Labs, libraries, makerspaces, and youth programs set their own rules. The examples below show why you should confirm the exact policy for the class you are considering, rather than rely on a general “kids can use a Fab Lab” rule.
Confirm that the class fits your child
Ask about age limits for the class and each tool
Ask for the minimum and maximum age in writing, then ask whether a machine has a stricter age limit than the class itself. A provider may welcome younger children for design or craft activities while reserving laser cutters, CNC machines, soldering stations, or other equipment for older students or supervised demonstrations.
There is no universal age standard. A 2025 States of Guernsey Library policy lists age 9 as a general access baseline and requires a parent or guardian for users under 12. CU Community Fab Lab requires adult supervision for patrons under 18. MakeHaven’s policy says it offers no scheduled youth programs under 12, limited programming for ages 12–14, and primarily serves ages 15–17. By contrast, Fab Lab Fabric + Quilt lists children’s classes for ages 8–12 and permits drop-off under its stated arrangements. These are individual provider policies, not a national rule.

| Published example | Age or supervision rule | What to ask your provider |
|---|---|---|
| States of Guernsey Library Fab Lab Policy (2025) | General access baseline of 9; a parent or guardian is required for users under 12. | Does this class follow a similar age threshold, and are particular machines restricted? |
| CU Community Fab Lab | Patrons under 18 require adult supervision. | Must an adult remain on site for the entire class? |
| MakeHaven policy (synced August 17, 2026) | No scheduled youth programs under 12; limited programming at 12–14; primary youth-program group 15–17. | Does the program have separate age tracks or tool restrictions? |
| Fab Lab Fabric + Quilt children’s classes (page reviewed October 13, 2026) | Classes stated for ages 8–12, with a drop-off arrangement and reachable parent contact. | What are the exact arrival, contact, and pickup requirements? |
Check prerequisites and project fit
- Does the child need a prior class, an orientation, or a completed safety badge?
- Is the project designed for this age and reading, dexterity, and attention level?
- Will the child design independently, follow a preset activity, or mainly watch a demonstration?
- How much one-to-one help is normally available?
Ask what the child will bring home and whether the project can be completed during the scheduled session. A complicated build may require a second visit, additional fees, or storage of unfinished work.
Establish whether you must stay
Distinguish drop-off, on-site, and in-room supervision
“Adult supervision” can mean different things. Ask whether you must remain in the building, in the classroom, within sight of your child, or merely reachable by phone. Also ask whether the instructor supervises children during breaks, restroom trips, transitions between rooms, and pickup.
MakeHaven’s published policy requires direct, continuous parent or guardian supervision of minors and places responsibility for the child’s conduct and safety on the parent or guardian. Other programs use instructors for primary supervision or permit drop-off. Neither arrangement should be assumed from the words “family class” or “youth workshop.”

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ask who is responsible at every handoff
- Who signs the child in and out?
- Can someone other than the enrolling parent collect the child, and what identification or written authorization is needed?
- What happens if a parent is late?
- Who contacts you if the child becomes distressed, behaves unsafely, or is injured?
- What adult-to-student coverage does this particular class use?
The reviewed policies do not establish a universal adult-to-student ratio. Ask for the provider’s actual arrangement, especially if your child needs frequent assistance or has limited experience with tools.

Ask about safeguarding practices
You can ask whether youth-facing staff receive background checks and child-safety or abuse-prevention training. MakeHaven’s policy provides examples of safeguards to ask about: a “rule of three” in enclosed instructional spaces, visible one-to-one instruction, and a prohibition on one adult being alone with one minor in a private area. Its policy states: “No MakeHaven staff member, volunteer, member, contractor, or MakeHaven-designated instructor may be alone with a single minor in an enclosed or private space (e.g., recording booth, laser room, lab).” Treat these as questions for your provider, not requirements that every Fab Lab follows.
Get an equipment-by-equipment safety explanation
Identify every machine and hand tool
Ask for the planned equipment list, including hand tools and finishing tools. The safety questions differ for a 3D printer, laser cutter, CNC router, sewing machine, heat press, soldering iron, or craft knife. Ask which tools children may operate, which require an instructor to operate, and which are off limits.
Ask when and how training occurs
Find out whether there is an induction before any tool use, whether the instructor checks each child’s understanding, and whether the child can work independently afterward. The States of Guernsey Library policy says, “Users must complete a Fab Lab induction before using equipment independently.” It also notes that CNC machines and other high-powered tools may require additional training or supervised use. Medford Public Library describes general safety instruction followed by equipment-specific badge classes. Ask whether your class uses a comparable system or a shorter briefing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Ask whether the safety briefing occurs before the first project or at a separate orientation.
- Ask what the child must demonstrate before pressing a start button or changing a setting.
- Ask whether an instructor remains within arm’s reach during cutting, heating, spinning, or other high-risk operations.
- Ask what happens if a child forgets a step or uses equipment incorrectly.
Clarify material controls and fault reporting
Ask whether children may bring their own files or materials and who approves them. Some policies prohibit unsafe or incompatible materials. Ask how to report a broken guard, jammed machine, damaged cable, smoke, unusual noise, injury, or near miss. The Guernsey policy calls for prompt reporting of faults, injuries, and near misses; your provider may use a different form or process.

Match hazards to protective equipment and clothing
Ask what can go wrong in this specific activity
Request a plain-language explanation of the hazards associated with the actual project: sharp edges, hot surfaces, moving parts, fumes, dust, flying fragments, pinching, entanglement, or electrical risks. The CU Community Fab Lab waiver says: “The specific risks vary from one activity to another, but the risks range from 1) minor injuries such as small cuts, scratches, or burns, to 2) major injuries such as eye injury or loss of sight, cuts, and burns.” The range of risk depends on the equipment, material, supervision, and activity.
Confirm what the lab supplies
- Which protective equipment is mandatory: safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, aprons, respirators, or closed-toe shoes?
- Does the lab provide clean, correctly sized equipment?
- What clothing, hair, jewelry, or footwear rules apply?
- Are there allergies, asthma concerns, or other medical issues the instructor should know about?
Do not buy protective equipment or project supplies before the provider confirms the requirements. The Guernsey policy requires appropriate personal protective equipment as needed, but the exact equipment depends on the activity and site.
Calculate the complete cost and preparation
Ask what the registration price includes
Request an itemized total rather than relying on a headline tuition price. Ask whether the fee covers instruction, consumable materials, machine time, safety equipment, and the finished project. One reviewed class provider says some classes include materials while others require participants to bring supplies; the class description is the controlling source.
| Possible charge or requirement | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Tuition or registration | What is the final price, including taxes or booking fees? |
| Materials | Are fabric, filament, wood, electronics, or other consumables included? |
| Machine use | Is there a separate equipment or usage fee? |
| Outside supplies | Must the child bring anything, and does the lab need to approve it? |
| Unfinished projects | Can the child return to finish, and is storage charged? |
Ask what to bring
Confirm whether the child needs a laptop, file, sketch, refillable water bottle, specific clothing, or a signed form. Ask whether the provider supplies tools and PPE. A parent should not assume that “makerspace” means families must bring their own tools or materials.

Complete forms and protect your child’s information
Find out which documents are required and when
- Minor waiver or parent authorization
- Emergency contact and medical information
- Permission for an authorized pickup person
- Attendance, late-arrival, and absence acknowledgment
- Photo or video consent
- Accessibility or accommodation request
Ask whether forms must be submitted during registration or signed on arrival. Read the waiver for activity-specific risks, not just the signature line. Confirm how the provider stores emergency and contact information and who can access it.
Discuss privacy and photography
Ask whether staff photograph or record projects, whether images are used publicly, and how to decline. A reviewed class-policy example allows families to opt out of class photography and explains its contact-data practices; another provider may use different terms. Ask whether the child’s name, image, design files, or finished project will appear online or in promotional material.
Raise accessibility needs before payment
Tell the provider about mobility, sensory, communication, learning, or medical needs early enough to plan. Ask about accessible work surfaces, noise and ventilation, visual instructions, extra transition time, adaptive tools, and who will provide support. Do not assume that a general “all ages” label means every activity is accessible without adjustment.
Know the cancellation, illness, and incident procedure
Ask what happens when plans change
- What is the cancellation deadline and refund policy?
- What happens if the class does not reach minimum enrollment?
- Can you transfer to another date?
- What happens if the child becomes ill or the lab closes?
- Will the provider contact you by email, text, or phone?
Ask whether a missed class can be made up and whether materials are held for later pickup. Get the answer before paying because cancellation and rescheduling rules are often separate from the class description.

Ask how injuries and safeguarding concerns are handled
Find out who gives first aid, when a parent is called, whether emergency services may be contacted, and how an incident or near miss is documented. Ask whom to contact after class if you have a concern about unsafe behavior, inappropriate conduct, or a child’s treatment. A clear reporting route matters even when no incident occurs.
Compare classes on the factors that affect your child
If you have more than one suitable option, compare the providers using the same questions instead of comparing tuition alone.
| Decision factor | Details to record |
|---|---|
| Age fit and prerequisites | Written age range, tool-specific limits, prior classes, and badges. |
| Supervision | Drop-off or parent-present model, instructor coverage, breaks, and pickup. |
| Safety instruction | Induction, machine-specific training, PPE, material controls, and incident reporting. |
| Learning fit | Project, skill level, class size, pace, and available help. |
| Total cost and logistics | Tuition, materials, equipment fees, schedule, arrival, cancellation, and rescheduling. |
| Consent and inclusion | Waivers, emergency details, photography choices, privacy, and accommodations. |
These are comparison criteria, not a ranking system. The published policies reviewed here do not provide comparable ratings or establish a single best provider.
Use this conversation checklist before enrolling
Save the answers in an email or registration note so there is a shared record with the provider.
- Describe your child: Give the child’s age, experience level, relevant medical or accessibility needs, and whether an adult can stay.
- Confirm eligibility: Ask whether the child can join this exact class and whether any machine has a different age limit.
- Ask for the project and equipment list: Confirm what the child will make, which tools are used, and which operations are instructor-only.
- Verify training: Ask about induction, safety badges, demonstrations, supervision during operation, and the response to unsafe behavior.
- Clarify supervision and pickup: Establish where the adult must be, who supervises breaks, and what identification is needed at pickup.
- Confirm hazards and PPE: Ask about activity-specific risks, required clothing, supplied protective equipment, and material restrictions.
- Request the full price: Include materials, machine fees, supplies, taxes, and any cost to finish an incomplete project.
- Complete paperwork: Ask for waivers, emergency contacts, photo choices, privacy terms, and accommodation procedures.
- Get contingency rules: Confirm illness, cancellation, minimum enrollment, refunds, transfers, late arrival, and incident reporting.
- Check the current class page: Match the staff’s answers to the provider’s current description and written policies before submitting payment.
When to pause instead of enrolling
Pause and request clarification if staff cannot state the age limits, equipment list, supervision model, required training, or total cost. Also pause if the provider tells you to purchase PPE or materials without identifying the specification, cannot explain who supervises children during transitions, or has no clear way to report an injury or safeguarding concern. A suitable class should be able to explain its expectations in terms a parent can understand.
