In June 2019, Double Fine CEO Tim Schafer said that if employees proposed forming a union, it would “be the start of a conversation.” He was open to discussing unionization, but said he did not know whether it would address problems such as crunch, employee abuse, or pay differences. His remarks were openness to discussion—not an endorsement of a union or a claim that one would solve those issues.
What did Tim Schafer say about unionizing at Double Fine?
In a June 21, 2019 Q&A with Game Developer, Schafer was asked how he would respond if Double Fine employees wanted to unionize. He answered, “It would be the start of a conversation.” He added: “I’m not opposed to talking about it, I just don’t know what the answers are.”
Schafer’s uncertainty concerned whether a union would be an effective remedy for workplace problems, including abuse, crunch, and differences in pay. The interview records his position at that time; it does not establish what he thinks today.
What was the union joke at the 2019 Game Developers Choice Awards?
At the March 2019 awards, Schafer performed a staged joke about unionization that involved the stage lighting and teleprompter. The Springfield & Central Illinois Trades & Labor Council reported that the lighting crew were members of IATSE. During the bit, Schafer said, “I’m not anti-union, but I don’t really think we need them, right?” After the lights went out, he added, “This is a union show. We’re better for it.”
#1 Best Overall
- Easy to learn, quick to play, and fun for the whole family!
- Read a card aloud and quickly write down two answers you think someone else will also write - get a match and it's a ditto!
- Includes 400 category cards
- Play with as few as four friends, or have a big party and everyone can play!
- For 4 or more players, ages 10 and up
The joke used the crew’s union status and the staged technical mishap for comic effect. It should not be treated as a formal statement of Double Fine policy or as a substitute for Schafer’s more considered comments in the later interview. Kotaku’s March 21, 2019 feature also discussed the gag alongside other Double Fine topics.
Does the 2019 interview establish Double Fine’s union status today?
No. Schafer’s hypothetical answer in 2019 does not establish whether Double Fine employees later organized or what the studio’s present labor status is. A May 2026 report by XP Gained says employees filed a union petition, but that report alone does not verify the filing’s details or outcome. Without confirmation from an official labor or union source, current status remains unresolved.

The distinction matters: being open to a conversation is not the same as endorsing unionization, and a reported petition is not proof that a union was certified or that an organizing effort concluded.
