Thermal putty is a conformable thermal interface material (TIM) that fills uneven space between laptop components and a cooling assembly. It is commonly used around VRAM and power-delivery components whose heights vary, allowing one heatsink to make thermal contact with several parts. The right thickness is not a universal number: it is the compressed gap left when the laptop’s original cooler is fully seated. Restore the material and thickness specified for your exact model rather than treating putty as interchangeable with ordinary thermal paste or every thermal pad.
What thermal putty does inside a laptop
A laptop cooling module rarely contacts every heat-producing component on one perfectly level plane. The CPU and GPU may use a flat, thin layer of thermal paste, while nearby memory chips, voltage-regulator components, or power-delivery ICs sit at slightly different heights. A rigid pad cut to one thickness can leave some parts uncontacted or force excessive pressure onto others. Thermal putty solves that geometric problem by deforming under the cooler and occupying the available space.
As a TIM, putty conducts heat from a component’s package or exposed surface into a heatsink, heat spreader, or heatpipe contact plate. Its useful property is conformity: it can fill a variable gap without requiring the component to be perfectly level with its neighbors. It remains a separate category from liquid thermal paste, which is intended for a very thin, relatively uniform bond line, and from pre-cut thermal pads, which have a defined thickness and more limited ability to accommodate height differences.

Manufacturers identify VRAM and power-delivery parts as possible uses. Thermal Grizzly also lists notebooks among potential applications, while iFixit describes its own putty for VRAM, power-delivery ICs, and laptop repasting work. Those statements describe where a product may be used; they do not prove that every laptop uses putty in those locations.

Why the compressed thickness matters
The relevant dimension is the bond line after the cooling assembly is installed and its screws have brought the heatsink to its designed seating position. A tub or package may advertise a range that the material can bridge, but that range is not a universal specification for a laptop.
Too little material
If the quantity does not span the real gap, part of the component can remain separated from the cooler. Air is a poor thermal path compared with a properly installed TIM, so a small unfilled area can raise local temperatures or create an uneven thermal pattern. A cooler that appears tight at its screw posts can still fail to contact a lower memory chip.
Too much material
Excess putty can prevent the heatsink from reaching its intended height. That may reduce contact with another component, change the pressure distribution, or leave the mounting screws under abnormal load. It can also squeeze into surrounding areas, making later service more difficult. The sources do not establish a universal amount at which these failures occur; the safe quantity depends on the original assembly and the product’s compression behavior.

What published ranges actually mean
Thermal Grizzly’s 2024 datasheet states that its Thermal Putty can bridge height differences from 0.2 to 3.0 mm. That is a product-line claim about a stated bridging capability, not a recommendation that a laptop gap should be filled to any point in that range. iFixit states that its Thermal Putty compresses to a bond line of at least 0.1 mm and lists 6 W/m·K thermal conductivity, with ASTM D5470 named on its product page. Both figures apply to iFixit’s product and testing description; neither is a minimum thickness or performance guarantee for every notebook.
Putty, paste, and pads are not interchangeable
| Material | Designed behavior | Typical laptop role | What determines suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermal putty | Soft, conformable, and able to fill uneven or changing gaps | VRAM, power-delivery ICs, and other components at different heights when the assembly calls for it | Actual gap after compression, pressure tolerance, electrical properties, and documented application |
| Thermal paste | Flows into microscopic surface irregularities as a very thin layer | Often used on a CPU or GPU die and flat cooler contact, if the laptop design specifies paste | Correct surface pairing and a thin bond line; it is not a substitute for a large variable gap |
| Thermal pad | Solid sheet with a nominal thickness and limited conformability | Components for which the cooler and pad thickness were designed together | Specified pad thickness, compression, hardness, and electrical behavior |
A product’s conductivity number alone cannot tell you which category fits. A highly conductive material that is too stiff, too thick, or electrically unsuitable can perform worse than a lower-rated material that matches the assembly.
Where laptop makers may use thermal putty
Look for putty on components that share a cooler but do not share one height. Memory packages beside a graphics processor are a common example. Power stages, chokes, driver ICs, and other power-delivery parts may also require a compliant filler. The exact map varies by motherboard layout and heatsink design; two laptops with similar processors can use different interfaces.

Putty is not automatically the material on every chip around a heatpipe. Some assemblies use pads, stamped metal contacts, graphite, or no direct heatsink contact for a particular component. Removing the cooler without documenting what was present can erase the evidence needed to choose a replacement.
What manufacturers say about available putties
The following claims are useful for understanding the category, but none establishes a universal laptop specification or an independent head-to-head ranking.
| Manufacturer or product description | Published detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal Grizzly Thermal Putty | Bridges height differences of 0.2–3.0 mm; described as a non-electrically conductive alternative to traditional thermal pads; notebooks are listed among possible applications. | Use the range only as that product’s stated capability. The datasheet cautions that its information reflects the manufacturer’s knowledge and experience and does not legally assure suitability for a concrete purpose. |
| iFixit Thermal Putty | At least 0.1 mm compressed bond line; 6 W/m·K conductivity; ASTM D5470 is named on the product page; listed for VRAM and power-delivery ICs and for laptop repasting. | These are iFixit’s product-page specifications, not an independent comparison or a universal minimum bond line. |
| FUCHS TIM PUTTY | Described as an ultra-soft, form-in-place gap filler for sensitive components where minimal pressure can be applied; several formulations have different properties. | “TIM putty” is a family of formulations, not one standardized material. Check the exact formulation rather than assuming all putties behave alike. |
| Laird Tputty 502 | Notebooks, tablets, and portable devices are listed as potential applications. Laird notes that performance varies and engineers should test the material in the application. | The application list is not a model-specific consumer recommendation or a guarantee that a particular laptop’s original material can be replaced by it. |
How to identify the correct interface before replacing anything
- Identify the exact laptop model and board revision. Record the complete model code, not just the marketing family. Sub-models can use different heatsinks or memory layouts.
- Find model-specific service information. A service manual, parts diagram, or documented teardown may identify whether the cooler uses putty, pads, paste, or a combination. If the documentation does not state a thickness, do not convert a generic product range into a guessed measurement.
- Document the original assembly. Photograph each interface before cleaning. Note which components were covered, whether the material was a sheet or a molded mass, and whether thicknesses differed by location.
- Inspect the contact imprint. After removal, the compressed footprint can show whether the original material reached every target. An imprint is evidence about that one assembly, not a universal measurement method; residue can spread and obscure the original gap.
- Check electrical requirements. Confirm whether the replacement is documented as electrically insulating for the exact product. Do not infer safety solely from a conductivity value or from the word “putty.”
- Compare the candidate with the documented gap and pressure. A material intended for minimal-pressure components may not suit a heavily clamped interface, and a stiff pad may not suit a cooler with variable-height parts.
The available manufacturer information does not provide a universal laptop measurement procedure or a cross-model thickness chart. If the original interface is missing and no model-specific record exists, the responsible choice is to obtain a documented specification or qualified repair guidance rather than guess.

How to compare candidate materials
Use a multi-factor check instead of sorting products by the largest conductivity figure.
- Gap and compressed bond line: Does the product’s documented range cover the actual separation after the cooler seats? Treat a quoted range as a product claim with its stated test or application context.
- Conformability and compression: Can it deform around uneven component heights without preventing the heatsink from reaching its mounting stops? Is it appropriate for an assembly that applies very little pressure?
- Electrical behavior: Verify the exact formulation’s insulation or conductivity information, especially near exposed contacts and fine-pitch components.
- Application documentation: Prefer a product whose manufacturer names the relevant class of device and explains limitations. A notebook listing is useful context, not proof for your model.
- Thermal data and test method: Record the stated conductivity together with the source and method. ASTM D5470 on a product page identifies a test method for that claim; it does not predict temperatures in your laptop by itself.
- Pressure and serviceability: Soft, form-in-place products can be useful where pressure must stay low, but they may spread during handling. Consider whether the assembly can be removed and reseated without disturbing neighboring parts.
Application and reassembly guidance
Only apply putty after confirming that the laptop’s original design calls for a compatible gap filler. Thermal Grizzly’s manufacturer guidance includes cleaning and degreasing the target surface, including with isopropanol or its cleaning wipes. Follow the chosen product’s instructions for surface preparation and handling; this is not a substitute for the laptop maker’s service procedure.

- Remove old material without scraping component surfaces. Use a method compatible with the product and the board finish. Do not assume residue that looks like paste was originally paste.
- Clean and degrease the contact areas. Use the cleaner specified by the product or service documentation, and allow surfaces to dry fully before applying new TIM.
- Place the documented amount on the documented components. The goal is complete contact after compression, not a thick visible mound. Avoid spreading a product beyond the footprint unless its instructions specifically require it.
- Lower the heatsink straight down. Keep the assembly level so the material is compressed by the intended contact surfaces rather than dragged across the board.
- Tighten screws in the manufacturer’s sequence and increments. Uneven tightening can change the bond line and make a correct quantity appear incorrect.
- Inspect before final closure when practical. If the service procedure permits a controlled check, verify that the cooler reached its mounting stops and that no component was pushed out of position. Do not repeatedly lift a cooler just to inspect a soft material; each lift can disturb the bond line.
- Validate operation after reassembly. Check that the system boots, fans behave normally, and temperatures are stable under the same type of workload used before service. There is no universal temperature threshold proving that a putty replacement is correct; compare with model-specific expectations and look for abnormal hotspots or throttling.
Common failure modes and what they indicate
The heatsink rocks or will not sit flat
Excess material, an incorrectly placed pad, a trapped screw, or a component displaced during service can hold the cooler up. Remove power, revisit the model-specific assembly order, and verify that every interface matches the original design before tightening further.

Temperatures rise after replacement
Possible causes include an unfilled gap, insufficient compression, contamination, a cooler that did not seat, or a damaged fan or heatpipe. A conductivity label does not distinguish among these causes. Recheck contact evidence and mounting sequence rather than simply adding more putty.
Putty spreads onto nearby areas
Some formulations are intentionally very soft. Spread can be normal within the designed footprint, but material on connectors, contacts, or moving parts is a reason to stop and inspect the product’s electrical and cleaning instructions. Do not assume that every soft putty is electrically insulating.
The original material is hard to identify
Color and texture are unreliable identifiers. A gray or blue compound may be a pad residue, putty, or another TIM. Use service documentation, the cooler’s part number, and photographs of the untouched assembly. If those sources conflict, preserve the original material and obtain qualified model-specific advice.
A product advertises a wider range than the laptop gap
A wide advertised range does not make the product automatically better. The material still has to compress correctly, maintain contact, meet electrical requirements, and allow the heatsink to seat. Match the assembly first; treat the range as a limit or capability statement, not a target thickness.
When replacement is justified
Thermal putty is not a routine consumable that should be replaced on a calendar. Opening the cooler can disturb a functioning interface and create a new seating problem. Replacement is justified when the cooler has been removed, the original material is damaged or contaminated, a documented service procedure calls for renewal, or a verified change in components requires a different interface. If the laptop is operating normally and no service work is needed, leaving the factory material undisturbed is often the lower-risk choice.
Bottom line
Thermal putty fills variable gaps so a laptop cooler can contact components such as VRAM and power-delivery ICs at different heights. The correct thickness is the compressed bond line designed into that specific cooling assembly, not a generic number printed on a container. Confirm the model’s original interface, compare conformity, compression, electrical properties, and application guidance, and use conductivity figures only as supporting data. Product claims such as Thermal Grizzly’s 0.2–3.0 mm bridging range and iFixit’s at-least-0.1 mm bond line describe those products, not every laptop.
