In Windows, the Run dialog lets you open a supported program, file, folder, or system setting by typing a command. Press Windows logo key + R to open it. The abbreviated phrase “Win Run command” refers here to this Windows feature.
What is the Run command in Windows?
Run is a built-in Windows dialog for entering commands that open supported programs, files, folders, and system settings. It gives you a direct way to open something without browsing to it in menus or File Explorer. Microsoft describes the feature in its Run command guidance.
How do you open the Run dialog?
Press Windows logo key + R. You can also locate Run with Windows Search, as described in Microsoft’s instructions for opening Run and its Windows Search guidance. The keyboard shortcut is the direct option when you can use the keyboard.

How do you use a command in Run?
- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Type a supported command in the Open box.
- Press Enter to run it.
For example, type msinfo32 and press Enter to open System Information, as shown in Microsoft’s Run guidance.

Which commands can you type in Run?
The available commands depend on what tool or resource you want to open and what is installed on the PC. Microsoft’s Control Panel reference includes examples such as control appwiz.cpl for the Add/Remove Programs tool and control timedate.cpl for Date/Time Properties. That reference was published in January 2017, so treat those as documented examples, not a guarantee that every command or tool is available on every current Windows installation. Microsoft also notes that some listed tools may not exist on every installation: Control Panel tools and commands.
If a command does not open the intended item, check its spelling and whether the related program or tool is available in your Windows installation. Run accepts supported commands; it does not make unavailable tools appear.
