Short answer: the “Stanford–Elsevier top 2% scientist list” is a Scopus-based database of citation indicators, not an award or an audit of research quality. Its composite c-score combines citation impact with co-authorship and author-position information. Being included means that a researcher met the selection rule for a particular release; it does not certify that every part of the researcher’s work is excellent. Being absent does not show that the researcher does poor work.

The current release identified here is version 9, published by Elsevier on October 7, 2026. It uses an August 1, 2026 snapshot of Scopus, reports career-long data through the end of 2025, and has a separate file for citations received during calendar year 2025. Those dates and the chosen file are essential when you interpret an entry.

What the list actually is

The formal name is Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators. It is a public data release associated with Stanford researchers and Elsevier’s Scopus database. Calling it a “Stanford list” can make it sound like Stanford University grants a distinction. It does not. The release is a statistical database built from author profiles and citation records in Scopus.

Version 9 is an archived release. Elsevier says that it will not be changed after publication. If a Scopus author profile has a wrong affiliation, a missing paper, a duplicate identity, or a paper assigned to the wrong person, the correction route is Scopus’s Author Feedback Wizard. A successful correction can be considered in a future annual update; it does not retroactively rewrite version 9.

Item What version 9 specifies
Publisher and release date Elsevier Data Repository, October 7, 2026
Underlying data Scopus author profiles and citation records
Scopus snapshot August 1, 2026
Career-long citation cutoff End of 2025
Single-year citation period Calendar year 2025
Classification 20 scientific fields and 174 subfields under the Science-Metrix classification
Main selection rule Top 100,000 by c-score, calculated with and without self-citations, or a subfield percentile rank of 2% or above

A number copied from an older edition, university page, or news article is not automatically a version 9 number. Always name the release before comparing entries.

What the c-score measures

Elsevier describes the c-score as an impact measure rather than a productivity measure. In practical terms, it rewards citation influence and adjusts the picture for collaboration and the researcher’s position in the author list. A person does not move up merely by publishing a larger number of papers.

The foundational method is the 2019 peer-reviewed PLOS Biology paper by John P. A. Ioannidis, Jeroen Baas, Richard Klavans, and Kevin W. Boyack. That paper lists six components. The version 9 repository description retains the same broad idea while adding current data categories and reporting options. The components should therefore be read as the method’s foundation, not as a guarantee that every implementation detail is identical in every release.

Component What it captures
Total citations The number of citations received by the author’s indexed work.
Hirsch h-index A combined measure of output and citation concentration: an h-index of h means at least h papers have at least h citations each.
Co-authorship-adjusted hm-index A Schreiber hm-index that adjusts the effective paper count for the number of co-authors.
Citations to single-author papers Impact where the researcher is the sole author.
Citations to single- or first-author papers Impact where the researcher is sole author or listed first.
Citations to single-, first-, or last-author papers Impact where the researcher is sole, first, or last author.

Version 9 also supplies citation measures with and without self-citations, the ratio of citations to citing papers, and information about retracted papers and citations to or from retracted papers. These are additional indicators for interpretation; they do not turn the c-score into a peer review.

How scientists are selected

The release applies its rule to the values calculated from the specified Scopus snapshot. A scientist can qualify through either of two routes: ranking among the top 100,000 scientists by the composite c-score (the release presents versions with and without self-citations), or reaching a subfield percentile rank of 2% or above under the database’s selection convention.

The percentile route is intended to provide a field-sensitive comparison. Version 9 assigns authors to 20 broad fields and 174 subfields using Science-Metrix categories. For scientists with at least five papers, it provides field and subfield percentiles that show how the indicator compares with other authors in that classification. “Top 2%” therefore refers to a citation-indicator threshold within the release’s population and categories, not to a universal examination of all scientists or all forms of scholarly contribution.

Why two c-score versions appear

Self-citations can be legitimate: a research group may build a coherent line of work and cite its earlier methods. They can also inflate an indicator when used excessively. Version 9 reports metrics both including and excluding self-citations so that readers can see whether the selection outcome is sensitive to that choice. The presence of an exclusion calculation is not a finding of misconduct, and the inclusion calculation is not proof that self-citations are harmless.

Career-long and single-year files answer different questions

The database separates a long-horizon view from a recent-year view. They should never be described as two names for the same ranking.

Dimension Career-long listing Single-year listing
Citation window in version 9 Career data through December 31, 2025 Citations received during calendar year 2025
Question answered Who has accumulated substantial citation impact across the release’s career window? Who received unusually strong citation attention in one recent year?
Effect of career length Older researchers generally have more time for papers to accumulate citations. The one-year view reduces the simple advantage of having many years of accumulation, although established authors may still have larger visible portfolios.
Best use Studying sustained influence, with the release date and career cutoff stated. Studying recent momentum or a particular year, without treating it as a lifetime judgment.

The original method paper presented the one-year view partly as a way to reduce the advantage created by additional years of citation accumulation. It also warned that early-career researchers have fewer papers and less time for those papers to be cited, so a single-year or career-long absence is not a verdict on potential.

What information an entry can contain

A version 9 record can include the raw and derived indicators needed to inspect the score rather than relying on a badge. Look for:

  • citation counts and h-index values;
  • the co-authorship-adjusted hm-index;
  • citation counts for single-author, first-author, and last-author positions;
  • values calculated with self-citations and with self-citations removed;
  • the ratio of citations to citing papers, which helps distinguish many citations concentrated in a small number of citing documents from a broader citing base;
  • the assigned field and subfield and the associated percentiles, where the author has at least five papers;
  • information on retracted papers and citations involving retracted papers.

These fields make the database more transparent than a simple list of names, but they still describe indexed citation activity. They do not supply a reading of the papers, an assessment of methods, or an account of contributions outside the Scopus record.

What inclusion means—and what it does not

What inclusion does indicate

Inclusion indicates that the author’s profile and citation indicators met the version’s threshold under the selected time window, self-citation treatment, and field or subfield classification. It is evidence of high measured citation impact in that dataset. For a hiring, funding, or collaboration decision, it can be one screening signal among several.

What inclusion does not establish

  • It does not certify that the researcher’s findings are correct, important, reproducible, or ethically produced.
  • It does not measure teaching, supervision, mentoring, public communication, software, data stewardship, clinical service, policy work, or societal impact.
  • It does not prove that the researcher made the largest intellectual contribution to every highly cited paper.
  • It does not establish that a paper’s citations are positive; citations can be critical, perfunctory, or connected to disputed findings.
  • It does not constitute a prize granted by Stanford University.

Elsevier explicitly cautions against presenting the database as “absolute evidence of excellence.” The same warning applies in reverse: a scientist who is missing did not reach the release’s composite-indicator threshold, but that absence does not mean the person does poor work.

Six caveats that change how you should read a ranking

1. Release date and snapshot matter

Citation databases are moving snapshots. Version 9 uses Scopus data available on August 1, 2026, while its career-long indicators run through the end of 2025 and its single-year indicators cover 2025. A later correction, newly indexed paper, changed author profile, or additional citation is outside that archived calculation. When quoting a result, state “version 9” and the relevant cutoff instead of writing simply “the scientist is in the top 2%.”

2. Self-citation is a diagnostic, not a verdict

Compare the with-self-citations and without-self-citations columns. A large difference merits inspection of the publication and citation patterns, but it is not by itself evidence of manipulation. The 2019 method paper notes that self-citation levels vary by field and career and that extreme patterns require case-by-case scrutiny. Removing self-citations also cannot answer every concern: coordinated citation practices, reciprocal citations, and citation of a shared method can require reading the underlying papers.

3. Author profiles can be split or merged

Scopus author identifiers are assembled from publication metadata. A researcher can have two profiles, or a profile can contain another person’s papers, especially when names, affiliations, or transliterations overlap. The 2019 paper documented this profile-matching problem and reported historical performance figures, not a permanent guarantee. Check the author’s publication list and use the Author Feedback Wizard when a profile needs correction.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

4. Field comparisons are not automatically fair

Different disciplines cite at different rates. A paper in a citation-dense field can accumulate references faster than an equally influential paper in a field where citations are less common. Science-Metrix subfields and percentiles reduce some of that mismatch, but they do not eliminate it. The original authors cautioned that comparisons between fields with different citation densities are tenuous and that very small subfields can behave differently from broad categories. Treat a percentile as conditional on its assigned category, not as a universal scientific value.

5. Retraction information flags questions, not conclusions

Version 9 reports retracted papers and citations to or from retracted papers. Use those fields to identify records that need inspection: determine which paper was retracted, when, why, and whether later citations relied on the retracted result. A flag is not a complete research-integrity adjudication, and no flag should be interpreted without the relevant journal notice and paper context.

6. Early-career researchers are structurally disadvantaged

Citations need time to accumulate, and an author with only a few papers has less opportunity to reach a high h-index or a large total. The original method paper therefore cautioned that citation indicators have limited use when a researcher is early in a career or has few indexed publications. Compare people at similar career stages and use qualitative evidence for promising work that has not yet had time to attract citations.

Historical numbers that are often misquoted

The following figures come from the 2019 PLOS Biology paper and describe its historical datasets. They are not measurements of version 9.

Figure What it described
12.7% Median self-citation percentage among the top 100,000 authors in the paper’s 1996–2017 career-long dataset.
9.2% Median self-citation percentage among the top 100,000 authors in the paper’s 2017 single-year dataset.
6,880,389 Scientists with at least five papers in the Scopus population table described by that paper.
98% precision Historical 2017 Scopus author-profile performance reported by the paper.
93.5% average recall Another historical 2017 profile-performance measure reported by the paper.

The authors also reported later improved profile figures from April 2019. None of these historical evaluations guarantees the accuracy of every profile in a 2026 release, and none should be substituted for checking the current record.

A practical way to evaluate a listing

  1. Identify the exact release. Record the version number, publication date, Scopus snapshot, and citation cutoff. For the current release, those are version 9, October 7, 2026, August 1, 2026, and the end of 2025 for career data.
  2. Choose the correct time horizon. Decide whether the claim concerns the career-long file or citations received in calendar year 2025. Do not use a single-year result as a lifetime ranking.
  3. Check the selection route. Determine whether the author qualified through the top-100,000 c-score route or the subfield-percentile route. The route affects what “top 2%” means in context.
  4. Read the field assignment. Note the Science-Metrix field and subfield, and confirm that a percentile is being compared within that category. Be especially cautious with very small subfields.
  5. Compare self-citation treatments. Inspect the indicators with and without self-citations. Investigate a large gap rather than treating it as automatic misconduct or ignoring it entirely.
  6. Validate the author profile. Check whether the listed papers belong to the person, whether duplicate profiles exist, and whether major publications are missing. Submit corrections through Scopus’s Author Feedback Wizard when needed.
  7. Inspect the composition of impact. Use the single-, first-, and last-author citation columns to understand how collaboration and author position contribute. A high total dominated by large team papers answers a different question from a high count on single-author work.
  8. Review retraction indicators. Open the relevant journal notices and determine whether a retracted paper or citation materially affects the interpretation.
  9. Add evidence the database cannot measure. Read representative papers, examine methods and replication, and consider mentoring, openness, data or software contributions, teaching, and real-world effects.
  10. State the conclusion narrowly. A defensible sentence names the release and says that the author met its citation-indicator rule. It avoids converting that result into a claim about total scientific excellence.

Common misreadings to avoid

  • “Stanford awarded this scientist a top-2% honor.” No: it is a database associated with Stanford researchers and Elsevier’s Scopus data.
  • “Top 2% means the top 2% of all scientists in every sense.” No: it is a release-specific citation-indicator selection using defined fields, subfields, profiles, and time windows.
  • “The career and single-year lists are interchangeable.” No: one accumulates career-window citations and the other counts citations in one calendar year.
  • “Excluding self-citations makes the result unbiased.” No: it provides another view, but field practices, reciprocal citation, profile errors, and paper context still matter.
  • “Not listed means low quality.” No: early career, field citation density, indexing, profile errors, and the threshold can all affect inclusion.
  • “A retraction flag proves misconduct.” No: it identifies a record for investigation and does not replace an integrity finding.

Bottom line

The Stanford–Elsevier top 2% database is best understood as a dated, Scopus-based measurement of citation impact. Its c-score adds information about co-authorship and author position, and its career-long and single-year files let you ask different questions. Use the release metadata, field assignment, self-citation views, profile quality, and retraction information before drawing a conclusion. The result can be useful evidence of measured citation influence; it is not a certificate of a scientist’s overall quality, contribution, or integrity.
