The S&P 500 measures the performance of a selected large-cap segment of the U.S. stock market. It is a broad benchmark, not a complete list of U.S. companies or a measure of the entire economy. Because its constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, companies with greater investable market value generally have more influence on its movement.
What the S&P 500 measures
The index is designed to track selected large-cap U.S. equities. S&P Dow Jones Indices describes it as a proxy for U.S. equities and says it covers approximately 80% of available market capitalization. That makes it a broad market benchmark, but “the U.S. stock market” is shorthand: the index represents a particular segment, not every publicly traded company. S&P 500 index page
The provider’s description refers to 500 constituent companies. Its characteristics snapshot, however, reported 503 constituents on August 31, 2026. Those are different fields and should not be treated as a contradiction or as a permanent count: the number of constituents can change, and a company may have more than one represented share class.

How weighting shapes the index
The S&P 500 is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization. In broad terms, each constituent’s influence depends on its market value adjusted for the shares considered available for public investment, relative to the index as a whole. A larger investable market value generally means a larger index weight; the index does not give each company an equal vote.

Float adjustment excludes certain large shareholdings that are not generally available for public trading. S&P’s examples include holdings by founders, executives, controlling interests, company foundations, and government agencies. As a result, the weighting reflects investable float rather than simply counting every share a company has issued. S&P, “Methodology Matters”
What the S&P 500 leaves out
- Many public companies: It targets the large-cap segment and does not include every company listed in the United States. Its approximately 80% coverage figure refers to available market capitalization, not to 80% of companies. S&P 500 index page
- Equal representation: Smaller constituents can be included but have less influence than larger constituents when their float-adjusted market values are lower.
- Private businesses and broad economic conditions: The index tracks the market performance of its constituent securities. It does not directly measure private-company output, employment, wages, household finances, or GDP.
- Every share as freely tradable: Float adjustment removes large blocks that are not available to the public market, so the weighting is not based on all shareholder-held shares as though they could be traded.
- Dividends in a price-return figure: A price-return series reflects price changes; it does not include reinvested dividends. The total-return series does. Comparisons need to identify which series they use.
- A permanent roster: Constituents change over time. The index is maintained rather than being a fixed list of companies.
How the index level is calculated
The index is not a simple sum or average of stock prices. S&P describes a numerator based on the market values of index components, scaled by an index divisor to produce the reported level. The divisor is adjusted for constituent changes and certain corporate actions so those events do not, by themselves, create an artificial jump or drop in the index. S&P, Index Mathematics Methodology

How to read claims about the S&P 500
- When a source calls it “the market,” read that as a widely used large-cap U.S. equity benchmark, not a census of all U.S. stocks.
- When comparing performance, check whether the figures are price return or total return.
- When discussing its size, distinguish the provider’s description of 500 constituent companies from a dated constituent count; S&P’s snapshot showed 503 on August 31, 2026.
- When comparing it with another index, check the geographic scope, market-cap segment, selection rules, weighting method, coverage, and return series. S&P’s U.S. index family includes other size-segment and equal-weight approaches, so these distinctions can materially affect what an index represents. S&P U.S. Indices
