On a PS5, a solid white power indicator means the console is on, solid orange means Rest Mode, and no light means it is powered off. A PS5 normally starts with blue, then changes to white. Blue that remains blue, blinking blue, or white that only blinks indicates a problem rather than a normal status. Blinking orange is the short transition into Rest Mode. Sony’s pulsing-red overheating warning in its indicator guide is labeled for PS4, not PS5.

PS5 light colors at a glance

The color alone is not enough to identify the state. Check whether the indicator is solid or blinking, and watch whether it changes color. Sony’s official guide distinguishes normal transitions from error patterns.

Indicator pattern PS5 meaning What you should do
Starts blue, then becomes solid white Normal startup; the console is powering on. Wait for the PlayStation logo and the normal home screen.
Solid white The console is powered on. Use it normally. If there is no picture, follow the no-display guidance below.
Blinking blue or blue that never changes to white Console error; Sony describes the console as frozen and requiring troubleshooting. Perform the power-cycle procedure, then use Safe Mode software reinstallation if necessary.
Blinking white only Console error, or the console is in the process of powering off depending on the sequence. If it is blinking white and then goes dark, shutdown is normal. If it remains blinking, troubleshoot.
Blinking white, then no light The console is powering off. Do not disconnect power until the indicator is completely off.
Solid orange Rest Mode, a low-power state. The PS5 can perform enabled background functions such as charging and downloads.
Blinking orange The console is entering Rest Mode. Allow a few seconds for the indicator to become solid orange.
No indicator The console is powered off. Press the PS button on a connected or paired controller, or use the console’s power button.
Pulsing red Not assigned as a PS5 status in Sony’s cited guide; the pulsing-red overheating entry is specifically for PS4. Do not apply the PS4 red-light diagnosis to a PS5 without other evidence.

These definitions come from Sony PlayStation Support’s power-indicator guide, with the PS5 button behavior corroborated by Sony’s PS5 console button-functions page.

What a white PS5 light means

Solid white: the PS5 is on

A steady white indicator means the console has finished starting and is powered on. A solid white light is not an error by itself. The screen may show the home interface, a game, an app, or a system menu depending on what you were doing before.

If the light is solid white but the television shows no picture, the indicator is still reporting an on console, not a successful HDMI connection. Sony directs users with an on console and no image to PlayStation Repairs rather than assigning a different light color to that display problem.

Blinking white: distinguish shutdown from an error

A white indicator that blinks briefly and then turns off is the normal power-off sequence. Once the light is off, the PS5 is no longer running background tasks, charging controllers, or downloading and installing content.

White that keeps blinking without completing the transition is treated by Sony as an error pattern. The key difference is the outcome: blinking followed by darkness is shutdown; blinking that does not settle or turn off needs troubleshooting.

What blue means during startup

Blue changing to white is normal

When you start a PS5, the indicator begins blue and should transition to solid white. Sony says the PlayStation logo should appear during this startup sequence. The temporary blue phase is therefore not a warning; it is the expected first stage of powering on.

Persistent or blinking blue indicates a fault

If the indicator stays blue, repeatedly blinks blue, or never reaches solid white, Sony classifies the console as frozen and in need of troubleshooting. Do not keep removing and reconnecting the AC cable while the light is active. Use the controlled power-cycle steps instead.

What orange means: Rest Mode and its transition

Solid orange: Rest Mode is active

Solid orange means the PS5 is in Rest Mode, its low-power standby state. Rest Mode is not the same as being fully powered off. Depending on the options selected in the console’s power-saving settings, the PS5 can charge a controller and download or install games and system content while the indicator remains orange. Which functions run depends on those settings and on the task itself.

To wake the console, press the PS button on a USB-connected controller or on a controller that was previously paired with the PS5. Sony identifies this behavior for the PS5 and its DualSense wireless controller and other compatible controllers.

Blinking orange: entering Rest Mode

Blinking orange is a transition, not the steady Rest Mode state. Sony says the indicator should become solid orange after a few seconds. Give the console time to complete the transition instead of treating the brief blinking as a failure. If it never settles, confirm that the console is not also showing an uncompleted shutdown or another symptom, then use the power-cycle guidance.

What no light means

No indicator means the PS5 is powered off. In this state it cannot charge a controller or continue downloads and installations. That behavior is different from Rest Mode, where those activities may continue if enabled.

To start the console, press its power button or press the PS button on a USB-connected or previously paired controller. If pressing the controller button does nothing, connect the controller by USB and try again; a controller that has not been paired or has no usable charge cannot wake the console wirelessly.

What to do when blue or blinking white will not clear

Use Sony’s sequence for the error patterns in which blue does not transition to white or white only continues blinking.

  1. Wait for the console to stop changing state. Do not pull the cable during a lighted or blinking condition. Sony warns that disconnecting AC power while the indicator is lit or blinking can cause data loss, corruption, or damage.
  2. Disconnect the console from AC power. Once it is safe to do so, unplug the PS5’s AC power cord.
  3. Wait three minutes. This is Sony’s specified interval before reconnecting the console; it is an instruction, not a performance measurement.
  4. Reconnect the AC power cord and start the PS5. Watch for the normal blue-to-white startup transition and the PlayStation logo.
  5. If the same error remains, reinstall the console software in Safe Mode. Safe Mode provides system-maintenance options, including software reinstallation. Follow Sony’s current Safe Mode instructions on the support site and use only the installation files and steps Sony specifies for your console.

If the PS5 still will not complete startup after those steps, stop repeated power cycling and use Sony’s support and repair route. Persistent indicator errors can involve storage, system software, power, or other hardware that cannot be diagnosed from color alone.

AC-power safety: when it is safe to unplug

The indicator is a useful safety signal. Never disconnect the AC power cord while the light is lit or blinking unless Sony’s troubleshooting instructions specifically direct you to do so at the appropriate point. The warning covers both a steady light and a flashing light because the console may still be writing data or changing power states. Interrupting that process can result in lost or corrupted data or damage to the console. See Sony’s power-saving guidance for the official warning.

After a normal shutdown, wait until the indicator is completely off before unplugging the system. During startup, wait for the blue-to-white transition or for the console to finish its error response before taking any action.

How to interpret common real-world combinations

“It is blue for a few seconds, then white.”

That is the standard startup sequence. Continue waiting for the PlayStation logo and the user interface.

“It is solid orange while I am not using it.”

The console is in Rest Mode, not fully off. Background functions such as controller charging or downloads may run if you enabled them in power-saving settings.

“It blinks orange, then becomes orange.”

The PS5 has entered Rest Mode normally. The blink is the transition; the steady orange light is the resulting state.

“It is blinking blue and never reaches white.”

Treat this as the Sony-documented startup error pattern. Allow the current state to finish if it is changing, then perform the three-minute AC power-cycle procedure. If it returns, use Safe Mode software reinstallation.

“It blinks white and then turns off.”

That is the normal shutdown sequence. The console is off once the indicator goes dark.

“It is solid white, but the TV is blank.”

The PS5 is on, so the color does not indicate a power failure. Check the display and HDMI path, and if there is still no picture use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs guidance rather than interpreting the white light as an additional error code.

Why the red-light advice online can be misleading

Sony’s combined PS5-and-PS4 support page includes a pulsing-red overheating entry, but it labels that entry for the PS4 console. The PS5 entries in the same guide do not assign pulsing red to an overheating status. Consequently, a claim that a pulsing red light is the PS5’s official overheating code is not supported by that guide. For a PS5, rely on the documented white, blue, orange, and no-light patterns and on the console’s on-screen warnings or Sony support instructions for other symptoms.

A quick decision process

  • No light: the PS5 is off. Start it with the power button or a USB-connected or previously paired controller.
  • Solid orange: Rest Mode is active. Press the controller’s PS button to wake it.
  • Blinking orange: wait a few seconds for solid orange.
  • Blue that becomes white: normal startup.
  • Blue that stays blue or blinks: use the three-minute unplug-and-reconnect sequence, then Safe Mode reinstallation if it persists.
  • Solid white: the PS5 is on. If there is no image, pursue display troubleshooting or PlayStation Repairs.
  • Blinking white that ends with no light: normal shutdown.
  • White that keeps blinking: treat it as an error and follow the same controlled troubleshooting route.

The essential distinction

For PS5 status lights, sequence and behavior matter as much as color. White is on, orange is Rest Mode, and darkness is off. Blue is expected only while it changes to white during startup. Blinking orange should settle into orange. Blue that never changes and white that never completes its transition are the patterns that call for Sony’s troubleshooting steps. The safest practice in every case is to wait for the indicator to finish its current transition and never remove AC power while the light is lit or blinking.
