A key-shaped icon in an Android status bar normally means that a VPN connection is active. On Pixel phones, Google’s support documentation says the Key appears when VPN by Google is connected; Google Fi’s Android guidance uses the same interpretation. The symbol tells you that Android has an active VPN connection, but it does not tell you which VPN is responsible or whether every app’s traffic is routed through it.
To identify the connection, open Settings and search for VPN. On phones that expose the standard menu, use Network & internet > VPN. The exact icon design and menu wording can differ by manufacturer and Android release.
What the key icon represents
Android uses the key-shaped status indicator as a connection-status signal for a virtual private network. When the VPN is connected, the icon can remain visible while you use other apps, lock and unlock the screen, or move between networks. It is not a symbol for your screen lock, SIM security, password manager, or a hardware key.

Google Pixel Phone Help describes the behavior directly: “When the VPN is connected, at the top of your screen, you’ll find the Key.” Google Fi’s Android instructions likewise describe a VPN key icon as evidence that the VPN is connected. Those statements establish the meaning on Google-supported devices; they do not guarantee identical artwork on every Android phone.

A community post may call a similar-looking symbol a “lock.” That wording describes how the icon looks to the reader, not an official Android name. The most reliable way to identify it is to check the VPN entry in Settings rather than infer its purpose from the shape alone.
Find which VPN is active
Use Android’s Settings search first. It works across many manufacturer interfaces even when the menu is placed differently.
- Open Settings.
- Tap the search field and enter VPN.
- Open the result that lists VPN settings or the currently connected service.
- Read the service name and connection state. If the entry is managed by an app, Android may send you to that app for status and controls.
On devices with Google’s general menu layout, the path is Settings > Network & internet > VPN. If Settings search produces no useful result, look for a Network, Connections, or More connection settings section, then consult the phone manufacturer’s help for that model. Android skins can rename or relocate the same control.

Disconnecting removes the active VPN session; it does not necessarily uninstall the app or delete its saved configuration.
Why the icon can keep coming back
Always-on VPN
Android can start a VPN at boot and keep trying to maintain it through network changes. This is called Always-on VPN. If it is enabled, turning off a single session may only be temporary: Android can reconnect the selected service and restore the key icon.

To check it, open the VPN entry in Settings and look for Always-on VPN. Google’s general instructions allow you to enable or disable that option when the service exposes it. App-configured VPNs may not present the same switch in Android Settings; their app may contain the control instead.
Persistent failure notifications
An Always-on VPN can also produce a notification when the required connection is unavailable. Google documents that the notification remains until the VPN reconnects. Its documented way to clear that persistent failure state is to turn off Always-on for that VPN. If the device is managed by an employer or school, policy may prevent you from changing the setting yourself.
Reboots and network changes
A restart, switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or a temporary loss of signal can trigger a configured VPN to reconnect. The key’s return after one of these events does not necessarily indicate a new installation; it may be the existing service following its connection policy.
What the key does—and does not—tell you
It confirms a VPN connection state
The icon is useful as a quick indication that Android considers a VPN connection active. It can help you notice that a work profile, privacy app, VPN by Google, or another configured service is currently connected even when you are not inside that service’s app.
It does not identify the owner
The symbol alone does not tell you whether the connection belongs to a personal VPN app, VPN by Google, Google Fi, or an organization’s managed VPN. Open the VPN settings page to see the service name and the available controls.

It does not prove that every app uses the tunnel
Android VPN configuration can allow particular apps, exclude particular apps, or apply organization rules. Consequently, “VPN connected” is not the same as “all traffic from every app is routed through the VPN.” The status indicator reports the connection, while the VPN’s configuration determines its traffic scope.
For a managed device, an administrator can define app allowlists and can enforce a block-without-VPN policy. An app outside an allowed list may bypass the tunnel, while a policy can instead prevent that traffic from connecting at all. The key icon cannot display those per-app decisions.

The table describes control locations established by Google’s Android, Pixel, Fi, and Android Enterprise guidance. A manufacturer can use different labels while implementing the same Android VPN functions.
How to remove the key icon safely
- Open Settings and search for VPN.
- Open the active service and confirm that it is the connection represented by the icon.
- Tap the available disconnect, stop, or off control.
- If the icon returns, open that service’s settings and inspect Always-on VPN.
- Disable Always-on when you are allowed to do so, then disconnect the service again.
- If Android opens a VPN app instead of showing a switch, use that app’s connection and Always-on controls.
Do not remove a work VPN merely to hide the icon if your organization requires it for email, internal sites, or other resources. Disconnecting can block access or cause a compliance warning. Ask the administrator whether the icon is expected and whether the policy permits changes.
Troubleshooting when the status does not match what you expect
The key is visible, but you do not remember enabling a VPN
Search Settings for VPN and inspect every listed service. A VPN may have been enabled by a privacy application, a carrier feature, a work profile, or a previous setup. The status bar does not name the owner, so the Settings entry is the authoritative place to start.

The key disappears while you are browsing
Open the VPN settings page and check whether the service is disconnected or repeatedly failing. If Always-on is enabled, Android may show a failure notification until it reconnects. A network transition can also interrupt the tunnel. Reconnect using the service’s control and check whether the icon returns.
You cannot find a disconnect or Always-on switch
Some app-managed VPNs expose controls only inside their app. Open the app named in Android’s VPN entry. On a managed device, an administrator may hide or lock controls; in that case, contact the organization rather than attempting to remove the profile.
The icon is present, but one app behaves as if there is no VPN
Check the VPN’s per-app configuration. Android supports allowed and excluded applications, and enterprise policies can restrict routing further. The key confirms a VPN connection exists, not that the particular app you are testing is included in the tunnel.

Google’s documented Pixel behavior and the general Android Settings path are strong reference points, but they are not a promise that every manufacturer uses the same symbol, placement, or wording. A phone may show the key only while the connection is fully established, use a related status icon, or place VPN under a renamed Connections menu.

When the documented path is missing, use Settings search and then the manufacturer’s model-specific help. Avoid treating a community screenshot or a post titled “Key icon, top of screen” as a specification: community posts capture real reader questions, but they do not define Android’s behavior across releases.

Managed devices and the Android Enterprise rules
Android Enterprise documentation describes management features that can affect VPN behavior, including managed configurations, application allowlists, and block-without-VPN enforcement. A work profile can therefore make the icon persistent, restrict which applications use the tunnel, or prevent you from switching the service off.
Google’s Enterprise guidance references Android 7.0 as the version requirement for Always-on VPN support in that management context. That is a platform requirement for the feature, not a statistic about how many devices use it. Newer releases and manufacturer builds can add different policy controls.
If an administrator manages the phone, treat the VPN indicator as part of the device’s security policy. Check the work-profile settings or ask the administrator which applications are covered before changing anything.

The key icon is specifically associated with VPN status in the Google guidance covered here. A padlock, shield, key-shaped notification, or similar symbol from another app can represent a different feature. If the symbol does not correspond to an entry in Settings > VPN, tap the notification area, identify the app that posted it, and check that app’s documentation. Do not assume that every lock-like symbol is Android’s VPN indicator.
Likewise, removing a screen-lock method, changing a SIM PIN, or disconnecting Bluetooth will not normally remove a VPN key. Those settings control different security and connectivity functions.
