Yes. Adult male orcas known as Port and Starboard have been linked to a series of attacks on great white sharks off South Africa. Peer-reviewed observations show that a shark can be rapidly incapacitated and its liver selectively eaten in under two minutes. Starboard has also been observed attacking alone, while surviving white sharks have fled or avoided affected areas.
What happened off South Africa?
Port and Starboard are two adult male killer whales associated with white-shark predation in South African waters. The strongest evidence is not a viral clip or a stranded carcass: researchers directly observed attacks and documented the behaviour in peer-reviewed studies.
A 2024 report in the African Journal of Marine Science describes an approximately 2.5-metre juvenile great white shark being incapacitated and having its liver consumed in less than two minutes. Lead author Alison Towner called the Mossel Bay event “unprecedented behaviour underscoring the exceptional proficiency of the killer whale.”

Who are Port and Starboard?
They are adult male orcas identified by distinctive dorsal-fin characteristics and repeatedly associated with shark attacks near South Africa. Their names refer to the sides of a vessel: Port’s dorsal fin bends to the left and Starboard’s bends to the right. The documented incidents connect both whales to white-shark predation, but Starboard is the individual directly observed making a solo attack.
Did orcas really kill a great white shark?
Yes. The 2022 study in Ecology reports direct observations of killer whales preying on white sharks. The 2024 African Journal of Marine Science report records the sequence from incapacitation to liver consumption in less than two minutes. Together, those findings establish active predation rather than scavenging alone.

Sharks washing ashore with their livers removed helped prompt public attention, but carcasses by themselves cannot identify the attacker. The decisive evidence comes from observations and footage of killer whales attacking live white sharks, followed by selective feeding.

Orcas are much larger than great whites and can use speed, body mass and precise handling to control a shark. In the documented Mossel Bay event, the juvenile white shark was incapacitated first; its liver was then consumed almost immediately. The recorded interval was less than two minutes, not a prolonged struggle.

Starboard’s solo attack demonstrates that coordinated group tactics are not always required. However, one observed solo kill does not prove that every orca can routinely hunt great whites alone, or that all shark attacks follow the same sequence.
Why do orcas eat shark livers?
Researchers have repeatedly documented selective liver consumption, but the available reports do not establish one definitive explanation for the behaviour. The liver is a large, energy-rich organ, so targeting it could provide substantial calories relative to the effort of handling a dangerous shark. That is a biological interpretation, not a confirmed motive for Port or Starboard.

What is established is the selectivity: the whales incapacitate the shark and remove the liver rather than consuming the entire animal. Other tissues may be left behind, producing the conspicuous carcasses described in public reports.
Group attacks versus Starboard’s solo attack

What happens to the other sharks?
The effect extends beyond the sharks that are killed. The 2022 Ecology study reported a flight response among surviving white sharks. Sharks left or avoided areas where the orcas were present, creating an ecological “fear” effect.

That displacement can alter where sharks feed, rest and travel, even when most individuals survive. It is different from proving a permanent regional population decline. The long-term consequences for white-shark numbers and the wider food web remain an active research question.
Where can you watch the Shark Week orca documentary?
Warner Bros. Discovery has promoted a Shark Week whodunnit built around sharks found with their livers removed and an investigation into orca hunting behaviour. The programme is advertised for HBO Max. Streaming rights and catalogue dates depend on territory, subscription arrangements and the service’s current listings, so check the HBO Max catalogue in your country before subscribing specifically for this title.
A programme marketed as a mystery can dramatize the investigation, but the underlying predation evidence comes from scientific observations and published reporting. Treat promotional claims about availability as time- and region-sensitive.
