The Great Unconformity is an erosional gap in the Grand Canyon’s rock record. At the classic contact, much younger, nearly horizontal Paleozoic layers sit directly on far older Vishnu Basement Rocks—mainly metamorphic schist cut by granite. The National Park Service (NPS) estimates that about 1.2 billion years of Earth history are missing at this boundary, roughly 30 percent of the planet’s history.
For a rim-based view that brings the related contacts together, the NPS points to Lipan Point and the northward view from Horseshoe Mesa in the eastern Grand Canyon. Yavapai Geology Museum on the South Rim provides a useful geological panorama, while an exposure downstream from Phantom Ranch shows the contact in the inner gorge along the Colorado River.
What the Great Unconformity means
An unconformity is a boundary where part of the geologic record is absent. Rocks may have been eroded away, or sediment may not have accumulated for a long interval. Either way, the surface separates older rocks below from younger rocks above, with elapsed time unrepresented in the layers.
The Great Unconformity is not a separate rock formation. It is the irregular erosional surface and the time gap represented where the Layered Paleozoic Rocks of the Grand Canyon overlie the much older Vishnu Basement Rocks. The contrast is striking: resistant crystalline basement below and sedimentary strata above.

Geologists can infer portions of the missing story from rocks on either side of the surface and from evidence elsewhere, but an unconformity does not preserve a complete layer-by-layer account of the interval. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) describes such gaps as missing “pages” in the book of the geologic record.
The rocks on each side of the contact
Vishnu Basement Rocks below
The basement consists chiefly of Vishnu Schist and related metamorphic rocks, intruded by granite. These rocks formed deep in the crust and were later exposed by uplift and erosion. NPS’s broad age range for Vishnu Basement Rocks is approximately 1,840 to 1,375 million years ago (Ma, meaning million years ago). A separate NPS compilation lists Vishnu Schist at about 1,750 Ma as a representative unit age.
Layered Paleozoic Rocks above
After the long interval of erosion and nondeposition, a new sedimentary sequence accumulated. Tapeats Sandstone is the basal Paleozoic unit in the inner-gorge example described by the USGS. It records shoreline and near-shore conditions when a Cambrian sea advanced across the region. The NPS gives Tapeats Sandstone a compiled age of about 508 Ma and places the broader Layered Paleozoic Rocks package at approximately 530 to 270 Ma.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not expect a perfectly straight, ruler-drawn line. The basement surface was weathered and sculpted before burial, so the contact can be uneven. From some viewpoints the color and texture change is obvious; from others, distance, lighting, vegetation or the angle of the rocks makes the exact boundary difficult to isolate.
Why there are three similarly named contacts
The Grand Canyon Supergroup survives in some areas between the basement and the younger Paleozoic layers. Where it is present, NPS distinguishes two separate unconformities. Where the Supergroup has been removed, those erosion surfaces meet and the combined boundary is called the Great Unconformity.

| Contact | Rocks separated | Time NPS says may be missing | How it relates to the classic Great Unconformity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Nonconformity | Vishnu Basement Rocks below; Grand Canyon Supergroup above | Up to 500 million years | The lower contact where the Supergroup is preserved |
| Great Angular Unconformity | Tilted Grand Canyon Supergroup below; Layered Paleozoic Rocks above | Up to about 750 million years; the Lipan Point caption gives about 590–740 million years for that location | The upper contact where the Supergroup is preserved |
| Great Unconformity | Vishnu Basement Rocks below; Layered Paleozoic Rocks above | About 1.2 billion years | The classic combined boundary where the Supergroup pinches out or is absent |
The word “angular” refers to the geometry of the rocks: the Supergroup beds were tilted before the younger Paleozoic strata were deposited across them. “Nonconformity” describes sedimentary or volcanic rocks resting on older crystalline basement. These names identify different rock relationships, not three unrelated mysteries.
How much time is missing?
“About 1.2 billion years” is the NPS estimate for the classic Great Unconformity in the Grand Canyon. NPS also expresses that interval as about 30 percent of Earth’s history. The figure is an estimate for the time represented by the erosion surface, not a date stamped on one boulder or one single measured layer.
NPS explains that numeric ages can be assigned to missing intervals by comparing the best numeric ages of rocks directly above and below the erosion surfaces. Those ages depend on dating methods, suitable minerals or other datable material, geologic context and fossils. The agency describes its compiled ages as “best” estimates, and they can be revised as new work changes the interpretation.
For that reason, subtracting the age of one Tapeats Sandstone entry from the age of one Vishnu Schist entry does not independently define the entire gap. The published unit ages are useful context, while the approximately 1.2-billion-year value is the NPS’s stated estimate for the contact itself.
Age ranges for the main rock packages
| Rock package or unit | NPS age information |
|---|---|
| Vishnu Basement Rocks | Approximately 1,840–1,375 Ma |
| Grand Canyon Supergroup | Approximately 1,255–729 Ma |
| Layered Paleozoic Rocks | Approximately 530–270 Ma |
| Bass Formation | About 1,255 Ma in the NPS numeric-age compilation |
| Vishnu Schist | About 1,750 Ma in the NPS numeric-age compilation |
| Tapeats Sandstone | About 508 Ma in the NPS numeric-age compilation |
The ranges describe broad packages and representative entries. They should not be read as a claim that every grain in a formation formed at exactly one time.

Where to see the Great Unconformity
Lipan Point: the clearest named rim location for all three contacts
The NPS identifies Lipan Point as a place to see the Great Nonconformity, Great Angular Unconformity and classic Great Unconformity together where the relevant units are exposed. Its interpretation describes the northward view from Horseshoe Mesa in the eastern Grand Canyon. This is the strongest rim-based choice when your goal is to understand how the three contacts fit together spatially.
Look for the relationship among three packages rather than hunting for one thin line. Ancient, dark basement forms the lowest component; tilted Supergroup remnants may occupy the middle; and the younger, more gently layered Paleozoic rocks cap the sequence. Where the middle package disappears, the upper sedimentary rocks rest directly on basement—the classic Great Unconformity.
Yavapai Geology Museum: a South Rim geological panorama
The center window at Yavapai Geology Museum frames Granite Gorge, including Vishnu Basement Rocks and a remnant of tilted Grand Canyon Supergroup fringed by Cambrian beach sands. That view is valuable for orienting yourself to the basement, the surviving Supergroup and the younger sediments in one panorama.
The museum view should be described as an interpretive geological panorama, not as a guarantee that the classic Great Unconformity will appear as an equally distinct, continuous contact from the window. The exact visibility depends on which surfaces are exposed in the framed scene and how clearly the units can be distinguished from that distance.
Inner gorge downstream from Phantom Ranch
A USGS caption describes an exposure along the Colorado River downstream from Phantom Ranch. There, Tapeats Sandstone lies above the boundary with Precambrian metamorphic rocks. This is an inner-canyon geology location, distinct from a simple rim overlook.

The caption establishes the rock relationship, not current visitor logistics. It does not establish present-day river conditions, route status, permits, travel times, or safety requirements. Treat any visit to the inner gorge as a separate trip-planning question and consult current Grand Canyon information before attempting it.
Can you see it from the South Rim?
Yes, the South Rim offers relevant views, but “see it” can mean two different things. Yavapai Geology Museum provides a South Rim panorama that helps identify the basement and preserved Supergroup. Lipan Point, farther east on the rim, is the NPS-named location for viewing all three related contacts where they are exposed.
From a rim viewpoint, the contact may be easier to understand as a change in rock packages across the canyon than as a single sharply outlined stripe. Distance compresses the vertical relief, and the unconformity itself can be irregular. A geology diagram or field guide can help you match the dark crystalline basement, tilted Supergroup remnants and horizontal Paleozoic strata to what you see.
What to look for in the landscape
- Different rock character: Vishnu Basement Rocks are crystalline and commonly dark or banded, whereas the overlying Paleozoic sequence is sedimentary and more visibly layered.
- Contrasting orientation: Grand Canyon Supergroup beds are tilted in places, while the younger Layered Paleozoic Rocks are comparatively horizontal.
- An erosional surface: The boundary may undulate around old hills and valleys rather than trace a perfectly level line.
- A missing middle package: If Supergroup rocks are preserved, you are seeing the two named contacts separately; where they are absent, the basement meets the Paleozoic cover directly.
- Scale: A broad panorama can show the arrangement of units even when the precise contact is too distant to resolve in detail.
Rim view or inner canyon: choosing the right kind of stop
| Option | Setting | What the cited description supports | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lipan Point | Rim, eastern Grand Canyon | NPS identifies a view where all three contacts can be seen together where exposed | Comparing the three related unconformities in one landscape |
| Yavapai Geology Museum | South Rim | Center-window panorama of basement, a tilted Supergroup remnant and Cambrian sands in Granite Gorge | Orienting yourself to the canyon’s major rock packages |
| Downstream from Phantom Ranch | Inner gorge along the Colorado River | USGS describes Tapeats Sandstone above the contact with Precambrian metamorphic rocks | Studying an inner-canyon exposure, subject to separate current access planning |
The official descriptions do not establish a visitor-tested ranking of viewpoints. Choose based on whether you want a rim panorama, a museum orientation or an inner-gorge exposure, and verify current park operations independently.

“The missing time is exactly the difference between two table ages.”
Formation ages are compiled estimates for particular units or broad packages. NPS’s approximately 1.2-billion-year estimate applies to the classic erosion surface and should not be replaced by a simple subtraction of two representative entries.
“Every place called an unconformity is the same boundary.”
The Great Nonconformity, Great Angular Unconformity and Great Unconformity involve different rock packages. The Supergroup’s presence or absence determines which contact you are looking at.
“A river-caption location is automatically a public overlook.”
The downstream-from-Phantom-Ranch exposure is in the inner gorge. A geology caption does not provide current access, permit or safety information.

Useful preparation for a geology-focused visit
- Decide which contact you want to understand. For the combined classic boundary, prioritize the NPS-described Lipan Point view; for package identification from the South Rim, use Yavapai Geology Museum.
- Learn the three rock packages. Before arriving, distinguish Vishnu Basement Rocks, the tilted Grand Canyon Supergroup and the Layered Paleozoic Rocks.
- Bring a labeled cross-section or field guide. The geology is three-dimensional, and a diagram makes the difference between a direct basement-to-Paleozoic contact and a Supergroup-preserved section easier to recognize.
- Check current park information separately. Overlook access, operating conditions, trails and river travel can change; the geological descriptions alone do not establish present conditions.
- Use the view at its proper scale. At the rim, first identify the broad arrangement of units, then try to trace the uneven contact rather than expecting a uniform line.
Books and field guides for deeper study
A printed geology guide can add cross-sections, maps and walking-based explanations that are difficult to obtain from a single overlook. Grand Canyon Conservancy lists Grand Canyon Geology by L. Greer Price, an illustrated overview of the canyon’s geologic record and regional setting, and Hiking Grand Canyon’s Geology by Lon Abbott and Terri Cook, which includes 18 geology excursions ranging from rim walks to rim-to-river routes. Availability can change, so check the organization’s current listing before relying on a particular edition.
