The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS is a 197 g cinema-camera body with a 50 MP, 1-inch sensor and a native Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mount. Its unusual mix of GoPro-sized hardware and interchangeable glass is appealing, but it is not a point-and-shoot action camera: the mount has no electronic contacts, so compatible lenses require manual focus and mechanically controlled or fixed aperture. Budget and plan for the lens, focus work and, in some setups, lens support.
What makes the MISSION 1 PRO ILS unusual
GoPro announced the MISSION 1 PRO ILS on August 26, 2026, calling it the company’s first interchangeable-lens cinema camera. It shares the 50 MP 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor with the MISSION 1 PRO, and weighs 6.95 oz (197 g), according to GoPro’s launch announcement. The small body can make unusual camera placements practical, although the lens still determines the rig’s size.
GoPro’s September 21, 2026 MISSION 1 PRO ILS Field Guide says, “MISSION 1 PRO ILS is the first GoPro in our 24-year history that lets you change the lens.” That is GoPro’s description of its product history, rather than an independently verified historical statistic.

The camera retains the series’ 8K and 4K Open Gate capture, slow-motion range, runtime and low-light performance, according to the field guide. Its distinctive proposition is the combination: a compact camera body paired with lenses selected and operated by the shooter, rather than a fixed lens and fully automated action-camera workflow.

Which lenses work with the MFT mount?
The native mount is MFT, but physical fit alone does not make a lens functional. The mount has no electronic contacts. GoPro’s field guide says a supported MFT lens must cover a 1-inch-or-larger sensor, allow manual focus, and offer manual aperture control or a fixed aperture no greater than f/4.5. GoPro says this rules out most modern autofocus MFT glass.
Check the lens before buying
- Focus: The lens must focus mechanically. Focus-by-wire lenses will not focus because the camera cannot communicate electronically with them.
- Aperture: The lens needs a mechanical aperture ring or a fixed aperture of f/4.5 or faster. A lens whose iris depends on electronic control remains wide open.
- Image coverage: GoPro identifies the sensor as Type 1-inch, approximately 13 × 10 mm. MFT lenses cover a larger image area, but 16 mm and Super 16 mm cinema lenses may vignette or fail to cover the sensor unless you crop or scale the image.
- Handling: GoPro recommends compact, light lenses where possible. It advises support for lenses over roughly 250 g, and also for lighter lenses in dynamic, high-vibration use.
Adapters and Sony E-mount lenses
The short flange distance of MFT permits adapters for vintage, PL-mount and specialty lenses, but an adapter does not add electronic communication. Check that the lens can focus manually and control aperture without camera electronics, that the adapter provides the required physical fit and flange distance, and that the lens covers the sensor. Adapter weight also adds to the load that may need support.

The available GoPro guide does not verify an E-mount adapter for Sony lenses. Do not assume an E-mount lens will work simply because an adapter appears to fit: compatibility depends on physical clearance, flange distance, focus and aperture operation.
What shooting with it asks of you
With no electronic lens communication, lens choice becomes part of setup. You select the glass, set the aperture on the lens, focus manually, and may need to balance or support the lens separately. GoPro includes Focus Assist and Focus Peaking, plus lens profiles that tune stabilization to focal length; the Mission Monitor app is also listed in the field guide.

For lenses over roughly 250 g, or lighter lenses used in high-vibration situations, GoPro recommends lens support. Its guide names the SmallRig 15mm LWS Universal Lens Support as one example. A PL or vintage lens adapter adds further weight, so consider the whole lens-and-adapter assembly rather than the lens alone.
Digital Camera World’s hands-on review by Hillary K. Grigonis found the body useful for tight-angle placement, subject to the lens’s dimensions. The reviewer described HyperSmooth as useful with interchangeable lenses, but not as steady as the fixed-lens model in some situations, noting edge wobble and recommending a gimbal for fast run-and-gun movement. Those are the reviewer’s observations, not universal stabilization measurements.

What you give up versus a fixed-lens action camera
The open mount comes with practical trade-offs. GoPro describes the ILS as weatherproof, not waterproof: it is not designed for submersion and does not have Dive mode or Underwater Image Tuning. The field guide also lists no subject tracking and no Horizon Lock. Those omissions matter if you want hands-off focus, underwater shooting or a level horizon during aggressive movement.

How much does the camera cost?
GoPro’s 2026 pricing announcement listed a $699.99 MSRP and $599.99 for existing GoPro subscribers, with availability planned for Q3 2026. These are announced launch-era prices, not confirmation of today’s price or availability; check GoPro’s current listing before purchasing. The body price excludes the lens. Digital Camera World’s review described a $699 launch price and likewise noted that buyers must budget for glass.
Depending on your setup, the full system may also require an adapter or lens support. A V30-or-faster microSD card and support accessories are additional context-dependent needs, not requirements for every shooter. The important cost comparison is a body-only figure versus the usable camera system you intend to build.
