The eZ80 retirement is a supply-chain and redesign problem for any circuit-protection product that contains an affected Littelfuse microcontroller—not evidence that an eZ80 is itself a protection component. Littelfuse’s Product Change Notice (PCN) ZAC26-0074, dated September 21, 2026, phases out its remaining active microcontroller families. The exact affected part numbers are in the PCN attachment, so check that list before assuming every eZ80 variant is included.
For an affected design, the immediate decisions are whether to place a controlled last-time buy by December 21, 2026, or start a migration. Neither path is risk-free: accepted orders are non-cancelable, non-returnable and non-reschedulable, while a replacement must be validated at the electrical, timing, firmware, tooling and qualification levels.
What Littelfuse’s retirement notice says
The controlling document is Littelfuse PCN ZAC26-0074. It announces a phase-out of all remaining active microcontroller product families. The notice says the complete affected-part-number list is supplied in an attachment. That distinction matters: a headline about the eZ80 does not, by itself, establish that every package, speed grade, temperature grade or related variant is covered.

A contemporaneous Hackaday report dated October 11, 2026 identifies the eZ80 and other Littelfuse MCU lines as the subject of the announcement, but the PCN remains the authority for contractual dates and ordering conditions.

| Milestone or term | What the PCN establishes | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Last-time-buy deadline | Orders must be submitted by December 21, 2026. | It is not a guarantee that any requested quantity will be accepted. |
| Delivery-schedule requests | Customers may request schedules for accepted orders through June 21, 2027. | Actual delivery may extend beyond that date because of manufacturing schedules, capacity and material availability. |
| Supply status | Supply is limited; full fulfillment is not guaranteed. Orders require formal acceptance, and quantities may be pushed out or canceled. | A purchase order alone does not create a firm allocation. |
| Accepted last-time-buy terms | Accepted orders are non-cancelable, non-returnable and non-reschedulable. | You cannot rely on returning excess stock or moving the delivery window later. |
In practical terms, December 21 is an order cutoff, not a promise that all requested units will be manufactured or delivered on a chosen date. Ask for written confirmation of the accepted quantity and schedule, then retain that confirmation with the product’s lifecycle records.
Why this matters to circuit-protection designers
An eZ80 is a processor. It is not a fuse, resettable protector, surge suppressor or other power-protection element. The retirement matters when an eZ80-based controller sits inside a larger protection product—for example, a monitor that samples voltage or current, drives a disconnect mechanism, records faults or coordinates a protected power path. The MCU may be only one line item, but its end-of-life can stop production of the complete assembly.
Design teams should therefore map the notice to actual products rather than to the phrase “circuit protection” in the abstract. A passive protection network with no affected MCU has no eZ80-specific lifecycle issue. A protection controller that contains an affected part does, even if the component is marketed under a different product name.

What the eZ80 architecture does—and does not—make portable
The Zilog eZ80 CPU User Manual (UM007715-0415, April 2015 revision) describes an 8-bit processor with two relevant operating models:
- Z80-compatible mode: Z80 and Z180 programs can execute with little or no modification, according to the manual.
- 24-bit Address and Data Long (ADL) mode: the architecture provides linear addressing up to 16 MB.
Those statements describe instruction-set and memory-model behavior. They do not establish that another microcontroller is pin-compatible, electrically compatible, timing-compatible, supported by the same compiler and debugger, or suitable as a drop-in replacement for a finished protection product.
Even an alternative processor that runs existing Z80 code can require a new board, power tree, clock arrangement, reset circuit, memory interface, peripheral drivers, startup code and production test. ADL usage is especially important: firmware that assumes 24-bit pointers or a linear 16 MB address space may not map cleanly onto a device with a different memory model.

First response: establish whether your product is affected
Complete this triage before buying inventory or selecting a replacement:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the exact bill-of-materials number. Match the manufacturer part number, package, grade and revision against the attachment to PCN ZAC26-0074. Do not infer coverage from the eZ80 family name alone.
- Separate product variants. Record which hardware revisions, firmware builds and customer options use the MCU. A service-only or legacy variant may have a different demand curve from the current model.
- Inventory dependencies. Identify compiler versions, assembler settings, debugger probes, programming fixtures, bootloaders, external memories, buses and peripherals that are specific to the existing device.
- Document operating assumptions. Capture memory mode, clock frequency, watchdog behavior, reset timing, interrupt use, ADC or communication peripherals, voltage rails, temperature range and timing margins.
- Map qualification obligations. Note customer approvals, environmental tests, production end-of-line tests and any change-control notice required when the MCU or board changes.
- Estimate the support horizon. Forecast production, warranty, field-service and expected repair demand separately. A five-year service obligation can require more stock than the remaining factory schedule suggests.
This exercise produces the baseline for a defensible last-time-buy quantity and for a migration statement of work.
Route 1: secure an existing supply
When a last-time buy can be sensible
Buying the current device can reduce near-term firmware and hardware disruption when the product is mature, demand is predictable and redesign approval would take longer than the remaining production window. It may also protect a qualification that is expensive to repeat.

How to size and place the order
- Build a unit forecast by product variant and month, then add warranty and repair demand.
- Model scrap, programming fallout, incoming inspection failures and a reserve for unexpected field replacements.
- Include the time needed to qualify date-code, lot and storage conditions at your facility.
- Request an accepted quantity and delivery schedule in writing. The PCN warns that requested quantities can be reduced, delayed or canceled.
- Obtain internal approval for the NCNR exposure before submitting the order. Once accepted, it cannot be canceled, returned or rescheduled.
Storage and obsolescence risks
A large buy shifts risk from manufacturing continuity to ownership of inventory. Define moisture-control, electrostatic-discharge, shelf-life and periodic-reinspection procedures appropriate to the package and your quality system. Track lots so field repairs can be supported without mixing unqualified material. Budget for the possibility that demand falls while the stock remains non-returnable.
Route 2: redesign or migrate
Start with system requirements, not instruction-set similarity
Write a replacement specification covering supply voltage and tolerances, input thresholds, output-drive capability, reset and watchdog behavior, clock accuracy, interrupt latency, memory capacity, nonvolatile-storage needs, communications, temperature and mechanical constraints. For a protection controller, include fault-detection timing, safe-state behavior, power-up and brownout behavior, and behavior during a stalled or corrupted firmware image.

Evaluate the complete implementation
Compare candidate devices at five levels:
- Electrical: pin voltages, current consumption, analog characteristics, output drive, startup sequencing and absolute maximum ratings.
- Timing: clock sources, instruction timing, interrupt response, watchdog windows, communication baud-rate error and the worst-case time from detected fault to protective action.
- Peripherals and board: timers, serial interfaces, memory buses, external RAM or flash, address decoding, reset circuitry, programming connector and package escape routing.
- Firmware and tools: compiler and linker behavior, assembly code, ABI, startup files, debugger access, production programming and manufacturing-test software.
- Qualification and support: environmental and EMC testing, customer reapproval, supplier lifecycle policy, documented errata and the expected support horizon.
Porting Z80-compatible code can reduce the amount of application logic rewritten, but it does not remove these system-level tasks. Treat compatibility as a hypothesis to verify with a prototype, not as a procurement specification.

Decision comparison
| Decision factor | Controlled last-time buy | Redesign or migration |
|---|---|---|
| Near-term production continuity | Potentially faster if quantities are formally accepted. | Depends on prototype, validation and approval schedule. |
| Availability certainty | Limited; the PCN does not guarantee full fulfillment or a fixed delivery date. | Depends on the selected supplier’s lifecycle and allocation policy; no universal successor is established by the notice. |
| Cash and inventory exposure | High upfront commitment; accepted orders are NCNR. | Engineering, tooling and qualification costs arrive before production savings. |
| Firmware and toolchain effort | Lowest, provided existing programming infrastructure remains usable. | May include compiler, debugger, linker, bootloader and manufacturing-fixture changes. |
| Electrical and board compatibility | Existing design is retained, subject to stock qualification. | Must be demonstrated; instruction-set similarity is insufficient. |
| Long-term support | Bounded by the quantity stored and its service-life assumptions. | Can reset the lifecycle clock, but only after the new device and supplier are qualified. |
The sources do not identify a guaranteed successor, current inventory, price or market-wide availability. Any replacement recommendation must therefore be tied to your requirements and to written supplier evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validation plan for an affected protection controller
Use a staged plan so a promising port does not become an untested production change:
- Architecture review: map every eZ80 instruction, memory access, peripheral register and startup assumption used by the firmware.
- Bench prototype: verify power-up, reset, clock, programming, communications, memory and watchdog behavior on representative hardware.
- Fault-path tests: inject overvoltage, undervoltage, sensor-open, sensor-short, communication-loss and processor-reset conditions as applicable to the product. Measure detection and protective-action timing against the existing requirement.
- Boundary and endurance tests: exercise temperature, supply tolerance, clock tolerance, repeated resets, brownouts and long-duration operation.
- Production readiness: update fixtures, programming files, serial-number handling, end-of-line tests, failure analysis instructions and service documentation.
- Formal release: complete customer notifications, regulatory or safety reviews and change-control records before discontinuing the original MCU.
Keep the original and migrated implementations traceable during the overlap period. That makes field returns diagnosable and prevents a software build intended for one memory map or peripheral set from being loaded onto another.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Board-level details that can invalidate an assumed drop-in design
A documented eZ80 module project by Dean Netherton illustrates how many supporting details surround the processor. The report describes a breakout board, decoupling capacitors, ZDI access, a Smart Cable adapter for flash and debugging, and selectable clock choices (project report, May 31, 2024). It is an individual project account, not a validated reference design or a general replacement recommendation.
For a production board, those details translate into concrete review questions: Does the candidate device use the same decoupling strategy? Is the debug interface still available after assembly? Can the programming fixture reach the new device? Does the clock source meet startup and fault-detection timing? Are reset, boot-selection and flash connections compatible with the existing layout? A “software-compatible” part that fails any of these checks is not a drop-in solution.
A practical schedule before the December 21, 2026 cutoff
Immediately
- Retrieve PCN ZAC26-0074 and verify the attachment against every active and service BOM.
- Freeze a demand model that separates production, warranty and repair units.
- Ask the supplier or authorized channel for written allocation and delivery information.
Before committing to an order
- Have engineering, operations, finance and quality approve the quantity and NCNR exposure.
- Define storage controls, lot traceability and an inventory disposition plan if demand changes.
- In parallel, open a migration project and capture the requirements that a successor must meet.
After an order is accepted
- Record the accepted quantity, schedule and any push-out or cancellation conditions.
- Monitor manufacturing and material updates rather than treating June 21, 2027 as a guaranteed arrival date.
- Continue prototype and qualification work so the product is not dependent on a single uncertain shipment.
Bottom line for designers
First prove whether the exact MCU in your product appears in the PCN attachment. If it does, choose between a documented, conservatively sized last-time buy and a full migration based on demand, delivery risk, redesign effort and support obligations. The eZ80’s Z80-compatible mode and 24-bit ADL architecture can help preserve software investment, but they do not prove electrical, timing, peripheral or qualification compatibility. For a circuit-protection system, the safe engineering decision is the one validated at the complete product level, not the one inferred from a processor family name.
