In NYT Connections, the colors mark the intended difficulty of the four word groups: yellow is easiest, purple is trickiest, and green and blue are the two intermediate colors. You can make up to four incorrect guesses; the fourth mistake ends the game and reveals the solution. The puzzle’s overlapping word themes are why a group that seems to fit can still be wrong.
What the four Connections colors mean
Each daily puzzle has 16 words. The goal is to arrange them into four groups of four, with each group sharing a connection. A connection might be literal, such as four kinds of fish, or based on wordplay, such as words that begin with “FIRE.”
The New York Times Help Center assigns each solved group one of four colors—yellow, green, blue, or purple—and identifies yellow as the easiest category and purple as the trickiest. That makes green and blue the intermediate colors in the intended difficulty range, but the Help Center does not formally distinguish them or promise how difficult a category will feel to every player. The colors describe the puzzle’s intended difficulty, not a fixed category type. Purple does not always mean wordplay, for example, and a category’s color does not guarantee that it will feel harder or easier to you than another one.

Why a plausible group can be wrong
Connections is designed to make words seem as though they could belong to more than one group. The NYT Help Center says each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky because words can fit multiple categories. A set of four may share a real-sounding relationship but still fail because one word belongs in a different intended group.
When checking a possible group, look at both how direct the connection is and whether any word has a plausible alternative home. Those are useful solving checks, not a published NYT scoring formula.

How mistakes work
Select four words and submit them as a group. According to Tom’s Guide’s how-to explanation, an incorrect submission uses one of four allowed mistakes. After the fourth mistake, the game ends and shows the solution and its groupings. The NYT Help Center also describes a mistake histogram ranging from zero to four, although its reviewed help text does not spell out the full submission sequence. Do not assume that NYT Connections will tell you that a guess is “one away” when three of the four words are correct: that mechanic is not verified in the NYT Help Center information cited here.

When the daily puzzle is available
The NYT Help Center says the daily puzzle releases at midnight in your timezone. It lists access through the NYT Games site, The Athletic site, and the News app, and says you do not need to register or sign in to play. Signing in can retain progress across devices. The same Help Center page says the archive goes back to June 12, 2023, with archive access for All Access and Games subscribers; archive puzzles affect some stats but not streaks, and completed archive puzzles cannot be replayed. Connections Bot features and archive availability are subject to the NYT’s current access rules.
