The Windows app’s real advantages are desktop workflows, not a different ChatGPT brain. Alt+Space opens a Companion Window for instant chats, the app can insert Snipping Tool captures and webcam photos directly, and eligible Work or Codex setups can use local files, folders and desktop tools with permission. The web version still provides most core ChatGPT capabilities, so the app is most useful when speed, capture or local computer context matters.

The practical difference in one view

It is misleading to describe the Windows app as having an entirely separate feature set. OpenAI documents many capabilities—file and audio uploads, data analysis, Voice, Canvas, Memory and Projects—across the web and other platforms, with access depending on plan and account. The Windows-specific case is the way the app connects ChatGPT to your desktop.

Workflow Windows app Web version What the difference means
Quick pop-up chat Companion Window opens with Alt+Space; you can chat, upload files, generate an image or begin a conversation. No equivalent system-wide ChatGPT Companion Window is documented. Faster access without switching back to a browser tab.
Screen capture Windows release notes document inserting a Snipping Tool capture of a window, full screen or custom region. You can still upload an image or screenshot manually. The app provides a direct capture-and-attach path, not proof that the web cannot process screenshots.
Camera capture The release notes document taking a webcam photo directly into a conversation. A camera image can be uploaded through supported browser workflows. The desktop app reduces steps for a live webcam snapshot.
Local computer context Eligible Work and Codex experiences can access local files, folders, repositories, terminals and desktop tools after permission is granted. Work and Codex Cloud run in the cloud. Local execution and local context are the meaningful desktop distinction.
Built-in browser Desktop app browser for Windows and macOS has its own state, tabs, downloads and sign-in. Your normal browser supplies its own state and tabs. The app keeps a separate, controlled browser environment; this is not a Windows-only browsing capability.
Voice Voice in desktop Work or Codex is available to eligible workspaces, subject to microphone and possibly screen, audio-recording and Accessibility permissions. Voice is also documented on the web. Desktop Voice is convenient for computer-context workflows, but voice itself is not Windows-exclusive.

Every row can be affected by your plan, workspace policy, region, app version and rollout status. OpenAI describes the Windows client as an early version and warns that some web or macOS features may not be present, but it does not publish a complete, permanent parity matrix. Check the controls visible in your account rather than relying on an old list of missing features. OpenAI’s Windows app guidance carries the current requirements and caveat.

Use the Companion Window for instant desktop access

Open it with Alt+Space

With the ChatGPT Windows app running, press Alt+Space. A compact Companion Window appears so you can ask a question, upload a file, generate a new image or start a separate conversation without opening the main app window. OpenAI describes this as an instant way to ask ChatGPT anything from the desktop. The Windows app help article documents the shortcut and available actions.

Change a conflicting shortcut

  1. Open the main ChatGPT Windows app.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select App.
  4. Choose Companion window hotkey and assign a different shortcut if another Windows program already claims Alt+Space.

The Companion Window remembers its last position. If you reset the app, it returns to the bottom-center position, so a reset can look like a layout change rather than a missing feature.

When this is genuinely better than a browser tab

The shortcut is useful while editing a document, checking a spreadsheet, reading a PDF or working in another application. You do not need to find a pinned tab or interrupt the current window. It does not create a new model or bypass plan limits; it is a faster entry point to the same account and workspace controls.

Capture a screen region or webcam photo inside a chat

Snipping Tool integration

Windows release notes dated November 14, 2024, document screenshot capture through Snipping Tool. You can select a single window, the entire screen or a custom region, then insert that capture into a ChatGPT conversation. This is useful for error messages, design feedback and settings screens because it removes the intermediate steps of saving a screenshot and browsing for the file. See the dated entry in Windows App release notes.

Direct webcam photos

A November 7, 2024 release-note entry documents taking a photo with a webcam and attaching it directly to a conversation. This can help when you need ChatGPT to inspect a physical item, handwritten page or visual setup at your desk. An external USB webcam is optional; it is only relevant if your computer lacks a suitable camera. The documentation does not establish that the Windows app is the only way to submit a camera image, so treat this as a convenience path rather than an exclusive computer-vision capability.

Permissions and expected behavior

Windows may ask for camera or screen-capture permission. If the capture command is missing, check Windows privacy settings, confirm that the desktop app is updated, and verify that your workspace has not disabled image uploads. A browser can still accept a screenshot or photo that you capture separately; the app’s advantage is the integrated capture sequence.

Give eligible Work and Codex sessions local computer context

Local Work versus cloud Work

On the web and mobile, Work runs in the cloud. In the desktop app, an eligible local Work experience can use files and desktop applications on your computer when your plan and workspace permit it and you grant access. That means a task can refer to a local folder or an application open on your PC instead of requiring you to upload every item first. Messages and task context may still be stored in the cloud, so local execution should not be confused with an offline mode. OpenAI explains the distinction in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

What Codex adds on the desktop

Codex can work with local folders, repositories, terminals and developer tools when configured and authorized. It is a separate desktop view rather than a mode you select inside ordinary web or mobile ChatGPT, and its local tasks are distinct from Codex Cloud tasks. The practical benefit is direct work in the environment where your code lives; the web still supports cloud-based coding workflows.

Grant only the context you intend

  • Approve access only for the folders, applications or tools needed for the task.
  • Keep private repositories and credentials outside a granted directory when possible.
  • Review workspace policy before assuming local actions are allowed.
  • Remember that cloud storage of messages or task context can still apply even when a command runs locally.

Desktop Voice permissions for Work and Codex

For Voice with Work or Codex on Windows, allow microphone access. Computer context may additionally require Screen & Audio Recording and Accessibility permissions. Your organization can restrict these permissions, and enabling them does not remove existing workspace controls. The permission requirements are listed in the Work and Codex documentation.

Use the desktop app’s separate built-in browser

The ChatGPT desktop app includes a built-in browser on both Windows and macOS. It maintains browser state separate from Chrome or another everyday browser, supports tabs and navigation, can download files and can pause for sign-in. OpenAI also documents richer functions such as autofill, password management and extensions, with availability depending on plan and workspace. Details are in the built-in browser guide.

This should not be read as “the web version cannot browse.” Ordinary web ChatGPT can use the web capabilities available to your account, and the built-in browser article does not establish a general absence of web search. The desktop distinction is isolation and control: the app’s browser has its own cookies, history and sign-ins rather than reusing your normal browser profile.

Workspace controls can change the experience

Administrators may restrict browser use, permitted websites, file transfers, history access or saved approvals. If a tab, download or sign-in flow behaves differently from a personal installation, an organization policy is a likely cause. Ask your workspace administrator before changing security settings.

Understand what Voice can—and cannot—prove

OpenAI’s current Voice documentation lists Live Voice in Chat on the web, iOS and Android, and Voice in the desktop app on Windows and macOS for eligible workspaces. Therefore, Voice is not a Windows-only reason to install the app. Access can vary by plan, workspace settings, region, app version and parental controls. See ChatGPT Voice for the platform and permission details.

What the web version already does

Before installing anything, check whether your need is already covered by web ChatGPT. The capabilities overview lists supported file and audio uploads, data analysis, Voice, Canvas, Memory and Projects, subject to plan and account availability. OpenAI’s capabilities overview is the appropriate reference because feature access changes independently of the Windows client.

  • Choose the web version when you mainly need ordinary chats, uploads, analysis, Projects, Canvas or cloud Work and you already have a browser setup you like.
  • Install the Windows app when a global hotkey, integrated screen or camera capture, local files and tools, or a separate in-app browser will save meaningful time.
  • Use both when you want a normal browser for long research sessions and the Companion Window for quick interruptions.

Windows requirements and deployment

System requirement

The Windows help page lists Windows 10, x64 or ARM64, version 17763.0 or higher. That is a compatibility threshold, not a performance benchmark. Confirm your Windows version and architecture before troubleshooting installation. The app is distributed through the Microsoft Store.

Organization deployment

Store-app access follows your organization’s IT policies. Enterprise and Education administrators may deploy the app with mobile-device or mobile-application management tools such as Microsoft Intune. IT teams can also use winget; the release notes document installation support added on January 30, 2025. Consult the Windows app article and the release notes for deployment details.

Troubleshoot the desktop-only workflows

Alt+Space does nothing

  1. Confirm the ChatGPT app is open and signed in.
  2. Try the shortcut shown under Settings → App → Companion window hotkey.
  3. Assign a different key combination if another utility intercepts Alt+Space.
  4. Restart the app after changing the shortcut.

Capture controls are missing

  • Update the Windows app and Windows itself.
  • Check Windows camera and screen-capture privacy permissions.
  • Confirm that image uploads are allowed by your plan and workspace.
  • Use a normal screenshot file upload as a fallback; the web can still analyze supported images.

Local files or tools are unavailable

  • Verify that your plan includes the relevant Work or Codex experience.
  • Ask the workspace administrator whether local access, terminals or specific websites are restricted.
  • Grant the requested folder, microphone, recording or Accessibility permission.
  • Do not assume a cloud Work session has local-computer access; select the desktop local workflow where your account provides it.

The app will not install

Check that the PC meets Windows 10 version 17763.0 or newer on x64 or ARM64, that Microsoft Store access is permitted, and that organizational policies are not blocking Store applications. In managed environments, ask IT about Intune or winget deployment rather than installing an unofficial package.

Bottom line: install it for workflow, not feature-count anxiety

The Windows app is worth installing when you need a system-wide Alt+Space launcher, direct Snipping Tool or webcam capture, or approved access to local files, repositories and desktop tools. Its built-in browser and desktop Voice add convenience but are also available, in related forms, on macOS or the web. If your use is ordinary cloud chat, uploads, analysis, Canvas, Memory or Projects, the web version already covers the core experience. Availability is account- and policy-dependent, so verify the controls in your installation before redesigning a workflow around them.
